Wasn't so much which name was better, just that if it's going to be refused because of the name, its something that could be easily changed to something less Totemy but still Ghost Bearish. If it isn't then I shall stick with the (supposedly) mythological Australian animal.

Or you could do something like this . . .

During the early years of the Golden Century, a Ghost Bear scientist (whose name has been purged from history) decided to breed, genetically manipulate, and release into the wilds of Bearclaw examples of EVERY single bear species native to Old Terra. 

This included the Brown Bear (including European, Grizzly, and Kodiak sub-species), the Black Bear (both Asian and American), the Sun Bear, the Giant Panda, the Spectacled Bear, the Sloth Bear, and the Polar Bear.  And, although not actually related to the above Bears at all, the Scientist also selected the Australian Koala Bear for inclusion among the specimens experimented upon and released.

The Koala specimens in particular thrived in the climate of Bearclaw and within two generations the new species had adapted to its environment.  Growing up to three times the size (and mass) of their ancestors, these creatures retained their ancestors arboreal habits . . . but were no longer restricted to eating leaves.  They had become true Omnivores (a trait that Ghost Bear Warriors find amusing, to say the least) and transformed into ambush predators who pounce on prey roaming the forest floor from the tree branches above.

Dubbed as the Bearclaw Drop-Bear (after the Australian myth), these modified Koalas are vicious in nature and use their powerful claws and prominent fangs (as well as their weight) to almost instantly incapacitate and fatally wound prey animals.  They show little fear of man and have been known to attack Elementals clad in Battle Armor!  (Although to little effect, of course.)

Attempts to domestic specimens have failed utterly, with the few Drop Bears in captivity attacking zoological staff at every opportunity.  Indeed, their sheer appetite for causing chaos has caused Ghost Bear civilians on Bearclaw to nickname the species "Stiches" after an ancient animated children's entertainment program.

Works for me, very nice. Can just picture members of the SLDF garrison (post Great Refusal) who are on maneuvers on Bearclaw (Why is not important) being warned not to camp under trees, and put this weird smelling black supposed-foodstuff on the back of their ears.  ;D

BLOOD TICK

Overview
A joint project between three Clans (Burrock, Diamond Shark, and Star Adder), the Blood Tick was an exercise in how far one could push a heavy OmniMech's mobility.  Built on a 60-ton chassis, the design incorporated all weight saving technology possible (from a 360XL fusion engine to Endo-Steel II internal structure to Ferro-Fibrous armor plating) with integral fixed jump jets (the maximum number possible for the weight and speed) and a MASC system.

The end result was a heavily armored, fast, extremely mobile OmniMech with less payload capacity (by one ton) than the 30-ton Kit Fox!

Design work on what would be designated as the Blood Tick (in a deliberate move by Burrock and Adder Khans to tweak the noses their Blood Spirit opponents) started in 3048 . . . before the Invasion actually even began.  But the limitations of the design resulted in the project being given low priority and only two technology demonstration models were produced.

But, with the ilKhan's announcement of PROJECT QUICKSILVER in 3052, Khan Cassius N'Buta of Clan Star Adder thought that submitting the Blood Tick would be amusing . . . not least because of the anticipated Blood Spirit reaction!

The design was revived, reworked slightly, and submitted just seventeen days after the ilKhan opened the competition.

Although pod-space was considered anemic, the high mobility and heavy armor protection did provide certain advantages to the design and Ulric Kerensky accepted the submission for testing . . . despite howls of protest from the Blood Spirit Khans when they learned of the name.

To which Khan Michael Holliday (of Clan Burrock) replied, "Since we, the true Clans of Kerensky, have in our midst a blood-sucking parasite who does nothing but siphon off resources and waste them on their insular and non-cooperative behavior, yet have proven almost impossible to render extinct despite their serving no purpose, why not have an OmniMech that honors their nature?"

Nineteen Trials of Grievance and thirteen Trials of Refusal were subsequently fought over the naming of this OmniMech . . . even before the field testing for QUICKSILVER began.

Capabilities
Massing 60-tons, the Blood Tick uses a 360XL fusion engine that provides sufficient motive power to walk at speeds of 64.8 kilometers per hour and run at 97.2 kph.  A two-ton MASC installation allows for brief sprints at speeds of 129.6 kph.  Six jump jets allow for a jump-capacity of up to 180 meters.  Scientists used Endo-Steel II to partially offset the weight and volume of these components, but Adder Khans insisted upon using the maximum amount of Ferro-Fibrous armor plating possible on the frame to provide hefty battlefield protection (10.5 tons for 100% of the theoretical maximum coverage on a 60-ton biped).

This produced a heavy-class OmniMech with a mere fifteen tons of pod-space available.

The Prime Configuration is intended to serve as a Command element for medium- and light-weight Stars and has been modeled extensively on the armament package of the SLDF Phoenix Hawk BattleMech.  Armament consists of an ER Large Laser in the right arm, two ER Medium Lasers (right torso and left torso), and two Machine-Guns with a half-ton of ammunition (for 100 bursts, all stored in the left arm). 

The lasers are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer (right torso) for accurate fire at range, while twelve double-strength heat sinks alleviate all but movement heat resulting from a jumping Alpha Strike . . . more than sufficient in the opinion of Warriors field-testing the design. 

The Blood Tick Prime also carries an Active Probe (right torso), an ECM Suite (left torso), a TAG target designation system (left arm), and has a full ton of Communications Equipment added to the cockpit that provides for superb command and control on the field of battle.

On an interesting note, the Adders and Sharks (upon reviewing the design post-Tukayyid) revamped the original cockpit configuration to accommodate an older-style SLDF cockpit interior instead of the minimalist modern Clan designs.  Warriors assigned to test the Blood Tick cite the improved long-term comfort afforded by the redesigned cockpit (along with the food and water stores, emergency supplies, and the inclusion of a lavatory!) as a tremendous aid with maintaining the high degree of effectiveness of a Clan Warrior on an extended campaign.  It is widely acknowledged as one of the key qualities of the OmniMech design.

Configuration A has two sub-configurations.  Both design feature three ER Medium Lasers (right torso, left torso, and left arm) and the base ten DHS.  They differ only in the ballistic weapon mounted.  A-1 carries an LB-10X autocannon with two tons of ammunition in the right arm, whereas the A-2 is instead armed with an Ultra AC-10 autocannon, once again with two tons of ammunition.

Configuration B carries an LRM-20 with Artemis IV fire-control systems in the right arm with three tons of ammunition (18 missile salvoes!), backed up by three Medium Pulse Lasers (right torso, left torso, and left arm).  The base ten DHS provides ample cooling (only overheating on a jumping Alpha Strike).

The Blood Tick C carries six Medium Pulse Lasers (two each in the left torso, right arm, and left arm).  Thirteen DHS allow the configuration to remain heat-neutral on a running Alpha Strike, only generating excess overheat should the Warrior jump and fire all of his weapons.

Finally, Configuration D is armed with two ER Large Lasers (right arm and left arm), tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso, and supported by a single LRM-5 (head mounted) with a ton of ammunition (left torso for 24 missile salvoes).  Thirteen DHS allows for the use of all weapons with only movement heat being generated.

Deployment
Although the QUICKSILVER trials have not yet begun, Clan Star has started limited production of the Blood Tick, primarily in the Prime Configuration.  Assigned to Star Captains and Star Colonels commanding lighter-weight Adder units (of which there ARE a few), this design has proven to be impressive at providing a Trinary or Cluster commander with all of the tools needed to effectively command on the modern battlefield.  The only complaint is that the twin Machine-guns (although a homage to the ancient Phoenix Hawk) are not needed on such a mobile design.  Ranking Warriors who have heard rumors of Clan Wolf developing a lighter, shorter-ranged TAG system have proposed removing the MGs and their ammunition and replacing the existing TAG with the half-weight unit if that new piece of equipment completes testing and becomes commonly available.  The resulting freed tonnage will be sufficient to add an Anti-Missile System and one ton of ammunition providing the commander with added defense against hostile missile fire.

I am confident enough in my own creation to allow it to stand without padding the contest.  besides about the only other thing I could do is REALLY reduce armor protection and the Kidon pushes my upper limits anyway.

Overview:
Clan Diamond Shark's approach to developing the Dire Fox was less a pursuit of
the design itself but instead the potentially profitable technologies required
to make it work. Certainly the expense of obtaining the design for the Kit Fox
'Mech from Clan Cloud Cobra (cash-strapped from their efforts to enter the
Quicksilver programme) would be hard to recoup with such an expensive machine.


Capabilities:
The Dire Fox takes the basic chassis of it's progenitor, fits the most powerful
engine ever fitted to a BattleMech (then requiring a correspondingly sized gyro
to match) and then reinforces chassis and protection accordingly.


The result is a 'Mech of unmatched agility for its size and with the highest
sustained top speed of any known BattleMech.


The price is firepower: the Dire Fox has no more pod space than the Kit Fox.


The OTHER price is the cost. The development team estimate each production Dire
Fox will cost almost 150 million Kerenskys. If the technology behind the engine
doesn't recoup this expense, it's likely at least one Diamond Shark Khan will
fall to wrath of the Clan Council for authorising the design.

Kind of have to go level 3 to make something more of a Werewolf. The logic of building a successful 60 ton fast 'Mech is pretty well understood... so to go out of the box, I designed an unsuccessful one.

The following report concerns increased activity at the Brim Ironworks in the
Clan Cloud Cobra enclave. My sources within our Merchant caste have noticed
increased activity that appears to involve Clan Snow Raven and possible, but
unconfirmed at the time, involvement of Clan Nova Cat as well. The activity
seems to surround the development of a new OmniMech, likely in conjunction with
IlKhan Kerensky's Quicksilver program.

Several weeks ago, one of my sources noticed several bare chassis of a new
design that were being prepared for armor application. Additionally, he noticed
several old Star League era Lancelot Mechs that appeared to be missing their
powerplants. In my estimation, these powerplants have been removed to be placed
in this new chassis which would make this new chassis a sixty or ninety
machine. However, given the information provided by my first source, it would
appear to be a sixty-ton OmniMech.

Recently, another source has revealed that armament and munitions have been
crossing from the Snow Raven and Nova Cat enclaves and into to the Brim
Ironworks facility. This confirms, in my mind, that there is involvement by
Clan Nova Cat in this project, thoug it appears to be minimal.

Within the past few days, I received a copy of a Battlerom from an unknown
source. This Battlerom, attached to this report, features no less than eight
configurations on the new chassis, now confirmed as the Black Talon. A detailed
analysis of each configuration follows in the configurations section of the
report.

From my analysis, this new OmniMech can reach speeds approaching a 100kph and
appears to be very well armored. It shares its appearance with the Lancelot and
the Griffin IIC though with a much more aggressive look.


Variants:
The Prime configuration is a direct copy of the Lancelot, though without the
Star League equipment. It features two ER large lasers and ER PPC. A lone ER
medium laser is its only secondary weapon. The rest of the pod space appears to
be dedicated to additional heat sinks.

The Alpha configuration seems to be a variation of the Huntsman Prime with
nearly the same loadout, though with fewer ER medium lasers and no A-Pods
thanks to the heavier jump jets on the Black Talon.

The Beta configuration features pairs of large pulse lasers, ER medium lasers
and Streak SRM-4 launchers. The lasers are mounted in the arms while missiles
are torso mounted. Again, the remaining weight appears to be dedicated to
additional heat sinks

The Gamma configuration is a jump jet-equipped heavy scout like the Alpha, but
features an ER PPC as its main weapon. The recon suite features all the
necessary tools to complete the scout mission. For secondary weapons, the Gamma
is equipped with a single SRM-4 launcher, an ER medium alser and a brace of
flamers.

The Delta configuration is the dedicate fire support platform with twin
torso-mounted Artemis IV-equipped LRM-15 launchers. The ammo bins appear to be
very deep as the battlerom showed it firing for nearly four minutes without a
break in fire. Secondary weapons are matching pairs of medium and small pulse
lasers mounted in each arm.

The Epsilon configuration seems to be the heavy hitting configuration featuring
a pair of ER PPCs and a trio of small pulse lasers as back ups. Additionally a
quartet of machine guns are mounted, like for the purpose of discouraging
infatry attacks. The remaining pod space is dedicated to six additional heat
sinks to deal with excessive heat.

The Zeta configuration appears to be a variation of the Stormcrow B taht is
favored by Snow Raven warriors. The only difference appears to be that four of
the ER medium lasers have been replaced by twin medium pulse lasers. This
likely done to cut down on the excessive heat buildup of the ER medium laser
and to improve accuracy.

The final configuration, the Omega, is a direct copy of the Shadow Cat Prime's
armament of a Gauss Rifle and twin medium lasers. In lieu of the Shadow Cat's
jump jets, the Cobra scientists added an ER medium laser and a Streak SRM-6
for added firepower.
