Title: Quicksilver Reconfiguration #2: Hellcat (formerly the Nova Cat)

Our second detour into the reconfiguration of newer designs before we continue to the seventy-five-ton OmniMechs of the Clans will be the Hellcat. Now most of you will know this design by its canon name, the Nova Cat, which I altered the name of in this alternate take of the BattleTech universe. Here is some of the fluff I’ve come up with below;
“The frontline forces of Clan Nova Cat took devastating damage during their invasion of the InnerSphere. Their twin defeats on Luthien and Tukayyid alone cost them almost a dozen OmniMech Clusters. Khan Severen Leroux quickly ordered construction of a new heavy war machine that would not only replace their military strength but rebuild their battered morale. While their early work won a place in the Quicksilver Program naming conventions unilaterally imposed by ilKhan Ulric Kerensky did away with the design’s first name. Originally Khan Leroux intended to imbue this new OmniMech with the very essence of his Clan but this ran contrary to the aim of Quicksilver which was to foster Clan unity.
Banning so called totem named entries angered many Clans including the Nova Cats who demanded a proper combat trial to settle the issue. Ultimately Mechwarriors from the Wolf Clan narrowly defended the ilKhan’s decision however controversial. While Nova Cat anger was satisfied by being the first Clan to successfully seize production rights to the Timber Wolf their new premier OmniMech still needed a name.
Thankfully the Quicksilver Program had already shown them the way with the Hellcat moniker. Initially used by the Hell’s Horses in the Ninth Quicksilver Trial for their Quad entry it was the second design which garnered more gravitas.
When a Goliath Scorpion abtakha in the Star Adder Khan's command unit put forward the Hellcat possibility for an eighty-five-ton challenger controversy erupted. Naming that concept after an exceptional pre-spaceflight atmospheric fighter craft of Old Earth drew the ire of the Smoke Jaguars. This because their Warhawk also shared the name of an ancient fighter which the Hellcat replaced. While this Hell’s Horses and Star Adder proposal failed to win the ilKhan’s approval which would have bought the Jaguars wrath it did get the Nova Cats attention. Severn Leroux claimed the designation for this new OmniMech where it stuck in spite of vehement protests.”
Now the advancing the whole design process six years (from 3059 to 3053) is a bit more palatable then the Crimson Langur but this concept is based on the Jade Falcon Night Gyr which has just been introduced so those are other topics which will need explanation. Diamond Shark their ancient ally is a user of the new war machine and agreed to help in exchange for a share of the production. Both the Hell’s Horses and Star Adders also have production shares likely to do with their naming rights in some way. Rounding out the major users of this Mech are the Ghost Bears and Snow Ravens who may have strong ties to the Nova Cats already as well.
Please discuss what you like about the existing configurations (even if most are far too advanced as is) and introduce your alternatives. Please explain why yours is best, what role it plays with your modifications, etc. Remember I love fluff. Again you are not allowed to alter the base design itself but the configurations are opened game. Clan Level 2 is the tech level for this contest just after Tukayyid so no ATMs, AP Gauss, Heavy Lasers, or Light Active Probes! Teamwork is also very welcomed so if you have an idea it is acceptable to collaborate. Since multiple configurations can win whoever gets the most wins, wins! The Nov...Hellcat eh?  Problem is that a fair few of its configs were with new tech mainly ATMs and Heavy lasers but we can give 'em a fiddle.

Are the Falcons still going to produce the Night Gyr? Its a bird of a different feather for them, as its basically a pocket assault Mech rather than a typical Clan heavy thanks to its general focus on raw balls to the wall firepower and being able to actually use it without doing a darn good impression of a star's core in terms of heat.

But i'll take a crack at the Nova Ca.Hellcat!


Initial thoughts though -  Prime, A and B, keep those for sure!

Yes, it debuted before the Quicksilver Program where as the Nov....Hellcat was only a glimmer in the eye of Severn Leroux.

Problem is that a fair few of its configs were with new tech mainly ATMs and Heavy lasers but we can give 'em a fiddle.

Yup, no ATMs or Heavy Lasers this time around just plenty of pod space to fool with. A few canon configs will survive to challenge you designers for sure but can you beat them?

As this technically is a new mech could we move fixed components as heat sinks in legs make so much sense on a design like this

Despite their anger at not being able to call their new OmniMech the name they wanted, Clan Nova Cat was still happy to tug the Jaguar’s tail by calling the new Omni the Hellcat.  With the Mech due to enter production it had been halted owing to the Quicksilver Trials, but development and testing went ahead regardless as the Cat Scientists ‘polished the cannonball’ to give their design the best possible shot at being accepted.

The Mech’s merits and the fact it as just months away from entering production helped it win a place in the Quicksilver Trials.  Diplomacy also played a part as angering the battered but still powerful Nova Cats would only break the unity that the ilKhan was trying to enforce on the Clans.  He knew he needed the Nova Cats in this endeavour and worked hard to smooth many a ruffled feather and bruised ego.

At 70 tons the Mech was a familiar weight for the Clans but in performance it was not.  Slower than the typical Clan heavy Mech speed the Hellcat, like its ancient World War II namesake traded speed for survivability and payload with a huge 38 tons of space available on its imposing frame.

Variants

Canon Prime – Although only a few testbeds existed all were being used to try and get the best possible weapons choices for their pilots.  The initial Prime was an energy weapons heavy design, mating a trio of ER large lasers and a pair of ER PPCs to give the Mech a heavy punch at the longest of ranges.  This energy loadout would also help banish the ghosts of Tukkayid and Luthien where the Nova Cats, like the other Clans ran into huge logistics problems with supplying their forces with ammunition in the field. 

Canon A - The prototype A Config was also viewed very favourably in simulations and battle testing.  Although not the hardest hitting of Mechs, the combination of a quartet of ER Large lasers with a targetting computer and enough heatsinks to fire the lot and move at full speed made it a fearsome sniper.  The ability to jump up to 120 meters was also greatly appreciated as it allowed the Mech to relocate to a better firing position or use terrain to control the range and battle.  The lessening of the logistics load was also a big positive mark for the Mech and its brutal elegance won it great favour with the pilots who tested the Config.

Canon B - In a complete reversal from the zero logistic impact Prime and A, the B more than made up for it with its massed banks of LRM's.  Because the Clans almost purely shunned artillery they had limited means of replying to such weapons or bringing a huge barrage capacity to an engagement.  The B was in essence an answer to artillery, able to fire a staggering 90 missiles thanks to its six LRM-15s.  Fed by 10 tons of ammunition the Mech could go through nearly a ton of this in a single full salvo so whilst it could bring devastating fire to bare it would only be for a limited time.  Initially the Scientists wanted it to carry 12-tons of ammo to increase endurance but Warriors rejected this as they wanted some weapons to fall back on even if only for point defence and so two ER Medium lasers were installed.  Still the B can provide enough firepower to devastate any target and the sheer amount of missiles can be used to cripple or destroy Spheroid forces if they try to close the range.

C - The prototype C was viewed rather poorly as the weapons mix, focusing on medium range firepower was felt to be too much of a mish-mash and the mix of autocannons imposed an unnecessary burden on the supply chain.  Instead the C was redesigned to engage infantry and armour targets whilst also having firepower to keep any Mech honest.  Retaining the paired large pulse lasers of the prototype the trio of autocannons are replaced by a single LB-10 pattern autocannon with a 2-ton ammunition hopper allowing it to fire cluster and slug rounds.  A pair of ER Medium and Small lasers provide additional firepower whilst for anti-infantry work a quartet of machine guns, sharing a ton of ammuniton between them can shred most infantry formations.  Finally a Streak SRM-6 sits in the chest behind a sliding housing so the launch ports don't mar the Mech's profile.  An active probe lets the Mech hunt for targets but even with 15 double heatsinks the C can easily overheat, but wisely using the Mech's weapons can keep the Mech running cool.

D - The Delta Config is built for close quarters engagements or against opponents attacking from surprise positions.  This mostly stemmed from the Cats experience on Luthien and Tukkayid where Spheroid Mechs would often launch ambushes at close range to negate the Clans range advantage, or brutal short range fire fights like the Jaguars endured in the Battle of Dinju Pass.  An Ultra-20 autocannon provides the main punch and is fed by an impressive 4-ton ammunition bin.  An ER Large laser is the Mech's sole long range weapon whilst a pair of Medium pulse lasers fill out the balance of the Mech's firepower.  What makes the D so dangerous is that all these weapons are linked into a targetting computer and the big cannon can smash opposing Mechs in a welter of shots.  Finally an Active probe lets the D sniff out any potential ambushes.

E - Taking lessons from history the E is armed identically to the classic Rifleman RFL-3N with paired ER large lasers and LB-5 autocannons in the arms and ER medium lasers in the side torso.  But, unlike the Spheroid Mech the Hellcat E is far better armoured, has greater endurance thanks to the 4-tons of onboard ammunition and is more mobile thanks to the jump jets that allow it to vault up to 120 meters.  Capable of laying down a withering barrage at long range as well as acting as a mobile flak gun the E, whilst not hard hitting can bring a sustained and flexible mix of weapons to the battlefield.

F - Able to engage at long and short range the F's primary punch comes from a pair of ER PPCs and a single Artemis IV enhanced LRM-20 which draws from a generous 3-ton ammunition hopper.  At short range the F has a blistering battery of weapons including a pair of Streak SRM-4s which share a ton of ammunition between them as well as a battery of six ER small lasers which can cut through hostile Battle Armour or Mechs in surprisingly short order.  Even with 20 heatsinks installed a full alpha strike will cause a significant and potentially dangerous heat spike.  Lethal at long and short ranges the F looks like it will do well with those who favour duels as the Mech can quickly overwhelm an opponent.

Deployment - The Hellcat is most commonly seen in Nova Cat front line trinaries as the Cats try to rebuild after suffering heavy losses. Here it is most often used as a 'pocket assault Mech' where its heavy firepower means it outguns most Spheroid assault Mechs and even the latest Mechs like the Thunderhawk of Pillager struggle to match  the firepower offered by Clan weapons.  So far the Cats are trading the design with the Clans who they have dealt fairly with in the past.  The ilKhan has been pressing for faster distribution but this has been hampered by 'shipping delays' to quote on of the Shark's involved in actually shipping the design. 

First seen in a raid on Kanowit where several Hellcats were deployed for testing and familiarization with front line Warriors in the Nova Cat's small occupation zone, they were also being used to shore up badly depleted units that had suffered heavy casualties on Tukkayid as the forces rebuilt and Kanowit was seen as a suitably 'quiet' world for this process to be carried out.
The result was a sharp reversal for the Combine raiders who were not expecting so high a level of resistance and the appearance of several unidentified Mech's who immediately opened fire from long range with barrages of laser and particle cannons.  During the engagement one Combine Mechwarrior trying to coordinate fire on the new Mech identified it as a 'Donryu' or 'Storm Dragon' and the name stuck.

Since u are technically correct and i am in full vacation mode go ahead if u like but be warned you'll have to place that Double Heat Sink if your design goes 10 (20)

While I liked the first few configurations I made what I thought as some necessary changes.

The Hellcat is a departure from the standard philosophy seen on Clan OmniMechs during the invasion. Standard doctrine routinely called for maximum possible 'Mech speed as the strategy often compared to with the initial Clan Invasion was the German Blitzkrieg of ancient Terra against the Allied forces.  With the failure of Operation Revival and the need to self reflect the ilKhan has chosen a bold new direction for the optimization of war production with his Quicksilver Trials. Returning to what some may call Type I OmniMech designs  many of the newer 'Mechs rolling out seem to be removing the bulky but tonnage saving XL engines or ones like the Hellcat slowing the top speed obtainable in order to increase potential firepower.

With the reality of what happened to the Nova Cats on Tukayyid the Cats realized that the main obstacle to overcome with their design was the heavy dependency of ammunition. Many of their losses there could be attributed to 'Mechs being unable to continue the fight due to the lack thereof. Especially poignant was that if not for the lack of ammo on the third day of fighting on Tukayyid they may have been able to overcome the horrible losses of nearly the entire 4th Nova Cat Lancers in the beginning phases of the battle. While the Nova Cat scientists had the framework of what they wanted for the proposed heavy OmniMech. One being able to keep pace with Inner Sphere designs of comparable size, two little to no need for ammunition or if the mission called for it enough for more than a handful of volleys, third able to have equivalent weaponry as many current assault designs and fourth if able to have weaponry that took advantage of advanced targeting capabilities that exceeded Inner Sphere designs.

The issue was the Nova Cats had never produced a heavy OmniMech before and though the idea was submitted to omnify an existing standard BattleMech none of the designs on file seemed to be an easy upgrade for the team. Luck came to the Cats when Clan Diamond Shark approached them with an interesting offer. The Sharks had "acquired" through their Chatterweb a partial schematic of the Night Gyr which had been sent between Jade Falcon science stations in an unsecured communique. Acquiring enough information from the schematics to build the general structure of the design, the Cats were able to alter it to drop the tonnage down their targeted 70 tons and change the 'Mechs profile enough that it only resembles the Night Gyr to someone actively looking for it. No rumors of this method of acquiring their design from what some may consider dishonorable means have spread, a third of the production until the end of 3060 was the price the Cats would pay for the assistance from the Sharks.

When the name originally submitted for the design was rebuffed by the ilKhan the Nova Cats changed the name after losing their trial of Grievance but still insist on calling the design its name within their own ranks. The Inner Sphere designation has become the Ungulate after the initial scouting party tracked one by its footprints which reminded the young tracker of the hooved animals he hunted on his homeworld.


Hellcat Prime
The primary configuration uses nearly 50% of its pod space towards heat sinks in order to be able to accurately and consistently lay down constant fire from extreme ranges with its three ER PPCs backed with twin ER-Medium Lasers for foes that are able to reach their range. While not the most fearsome of configurations the simplicity of the design has become a favorite of warriors granted the first rights of usage with the new design.

Configuration A
Continuing with philosophy laid down in their original conception. Configuration A utilizes an all energy configuration. Able to engage targets at medium to long ranges with its trio of Large Pulse Lasers and the increase of additional laser weapons as is it closes upon them, adding an additional twin Medium Pulses and twin ER Smalls. Advanced electronics allow this design to disable enemy targeting systems while maintaining its own advantages with its dearth of Pulse lasers. The first of many configurations to take advantage of jump jets to increase its tactical flexibility and backed by enough heat sinks to only worry about heat in extreme situations.

Configuration B
Departing from the philosophy slightly the B configuration is outfitted with pre Invasion the most amount of LRMs on a singular design. Four LRM 20s supported by Artemis Fire Control Systems is able to lay down enough missiles for any target to take notice. Twin ER Smalls that are mounted on the rear for any foes that may outflank the 'Mech. This configuration has seen a few minor tweaks in its short life already as seen in Configuration B1 in which warriors who don't care for the enhanced capabilities the Artemis provide that or they are looking for an even more intense missile barrage. This configuration in simulations seems to be extremely deadly when used in conjunction with other 'Mechs using a NARC missile system and Zellbrigen is not a concern.

Configuration D
The second design geared for Urban contests as well potential duels. The massive twin LB20X are able to obliterate most targets with a few volleys. With an impressive 20 shots per system it able to prowl the battlefield for far longer periods of time than other designs carrying similar weaponry.  A quad of ER Medium Lasers add an additional potential damage output if the pilot wants to put a target out of commission at the cost of overheating the 'Mech. Some duelists have been known to do an even swap of the LBX cannons to their UAC counterparts while limiting its combat time the increased damage output cannot be ignored.

Think you misunderstood i wanted to move the Endo Steel out of the legs as this beast overheats in almost every config. So the times it can sit in water with legs having HS it would assist with its heat dispersal.

I certainly did misunderstand you. However with the way this Mech is set up i would think ballstic and missile weapons would be preferred rather than energy weapons. The 11 integral heat sinks aren't really ideal for the energy boat configurations that this Mech features. I find marauder648 comments about this design being a pocket assault being most apt so far.

What do u guys think?

I do agree with Marauders assertion but all of its canon designs have everything in the arms making no difference if I moved to the torsos I can switch to the configs around if needed I will put things into torsos more then as a nod to the flaw in prior designs. the Clans stupidity of always carrying weapons in the arms due to battle armor makes no sense on heavies

I don't see any impediment to putting things in the torso, a Crossbow this is not, which is, as far as I know the only omni who canonically says "No stuff in the torso!"  Put stuff where ever you want, in the arms its probably more asthetically pleasing, and stuff like LRM's or AC's in the torso would probably be shoulder mounted  or built into the upper torso  section rather than just sticking out of the chest as the torso's quite slim.  I'd say a gauss rifle if mounted in the torso would have a mounting akin to the classic Shadow Hawk's stow and go AC. 

Both the Nova Cat and the Night Gyr are pocket assaults, for a Clan heavy they are slow, but this then gives them a LOT of tonnage for weapons and they generally use it pretty well to take advantage of the firepower advantages of Clan Tech, and make heavies that will happily outgun Mechs 20 tons heavier.

And this kinda makes sense, the Homeworlds are always described as being resource poor, so building a smaller Mech than an assault but packing the firepower of an assault onto it would make sense that way, at least in my mind, you're spending less resources on a Mech but still getting the performance you want in terms of firepower. 

I'd also say that the 11 heatsinks are not a problem either.  Mainly because it steps away from the 3050 designs issue of either not having enough cooling, of having ALL the coolling

"Oh, on the standard scale, 21  points of heat, at a full run, if you alpha everything."
"I see..so why has it got not only fifteen double heatsinks installed, but another three fitted for good measure?"

See Gargoyle Prime and Gladiator Prime as..well..prime examples of this.  Land a trinary of Gargoyle Prime's on venus and I swear you'd see a notable drop in the temperature.

Optimizing designs such as we are doing with Quicksilver often fails to address why something was done in the first place. There could have been a valid reason a certain class of mech was initially deployed in a certain fashion. One of the reasons i like our optimization effort is its well defined scope.

The Clan Invasion put a great deal of pressure on their heavy OmniMechs. Long the weight class favoured by elite mechwarriors, the Clans fielded a higher proportion than most of the Inner Sphere and they'd carried the brunt of the fighting. Clan Nova Cat had seen the fast heavies like the Timber Wolf, Summoner and Cauldron-born outmaneuver the majority of Inner Sphere heavies or outgun the handful of heavy 'Mechs fast enough to keep up. However, the Nova Cats lacked a trademark heavy of their own and the incredibly brutal fighting on Tukayyid had depleted their forces.

In order to rebuild the Nova Cats felt they needed to get their own heavy 'Mech into production and they felt the need for a design that could survive the incredible carnage of similar confrontations, so they ordered their scientists to focus on armour and firepower over speed. The Hellcat was the result, carrying close to the maximum possible protection but devoting half its tonnage to weapons.

The DCMS, on encountering the Hellcat in action, have dubbed it the Snapping Turtle or "Supon" in Japanese.


Capabilities:
The primary configuration of the Hellcat is based on the Nova Cat expectations of the combat a relatively slow heavy OmniMech can expect to encounter. Since faster enemies can't be closed with, the primary armaments are four extended range lasers, paired with ECM to limit the effect of advanced targeting systems. Because infantry can close in, a pair of anti-infantry lasers and an active probe are fitted. As dense terrain is hard for a slow 'Mech to make progress through, jump-jets are mounted.

The Hellcat A takes a more compromising view and is loaded for bracket firing. At mid-range it has a battery of seven medium extended range lasers while for long range there are two large lasers and a pair of LRM launchers. Accuracy is a priority for the configuration with artemis fire control and a targeting computer.

Built around a pair of Gauss Rifles, the Hellcat B is another long range design that combines them with an extended range PPC for concentrated damage. If swarmed at close range the quad-laser array in the chest poses a serious threat to Elementals and light 'Mechs.

The C-configuration switches to deal with close range engagements, loading the Hellcat with a heavy autocannon and a large SRM rack. Because this leaves them easily outranged, a pair of large lasers are mounted.

For anti-aircraft work the Nova Cats load their new heavy design with accurate weapons. The Hellcat D is fitted with paired pulse lasers and LB-X autocannon that mix damage and accuracy. In addition to aircraft, the mix is also effective against vehicles.

The Hellcat E is equipped to deliver massive LRM bombardment, loaded with four accurate missile launchers and eight tons of ammunition. Should the missiles run out then the Hellcat has four lasers to fall back upon.

The logic behind the Hellcat F's configuration escaped analysts at first until it was discovered that it mirrors the payload of the Atlas II assault 'Mech. Clan Wolf is apparently not pleased by this referential design, given the Founder's choice to join them rather than any other Clan. Since they were defeated in the Trial of Greivance they've little recourse though.

Just a refresher for out latest ongoing contest as it has been sort of quiet here. I do seem to remember four years ago when i started this that Abele gave me a version of the Nova Cat for this setting. His version got rid of Heavy Lasers and ATMs which weren't around yet. I'll try to find it asap.

And one Hellcat, one (with one obvious Easter Egg and one less obvious).

Overview
When Oathmaster Winters warmed her Khans about her vision showing a failure of Operation Revival, she was ignored by both. However, having learned to respect the power of these visions, they decided to launch the work on a new ‘Mech, one that could serve as the anchor of the Nova Cat Touman, a new Heavy ‘Mech that would bolster their forces both in case of success and of failure.
Requesting Barcella Alpha to begin working on this new project, they then left for the Inner Sphere and the rest as they say is history.

Upon coming back in the Homeworlds, the leaders of Clan Nova Cat gathered to review the different prototypes for what they thought would be a kind of Totem ‘Mech, however following the Quicksilver Trials that began at that time, the Totem ‘Mech was renamed as such individual comportments were now forbidden and in spite of the problems it generated with Clan Smoke Jaguar, Khan Leroux managed to claim the designation of Hellcat for his new ‘Mech, which was both a war plane from past times on Earth and one of the few enemies of the Sphinx Raptor, the natural enemy of the Nova Cat.

After eliminating 5 prototypes, the selected design was a rather classical 70 tons ‘Mech with a nearly maximal protection and a top speed of 64 kph while the use of Endo-Steel and of a XL Engine gives it 38 tons free for weapons and electronics, more than half the total tonnage.

Due to their time as observers at the beginning of Operation Revival and their heavy fights on Luthien and Tukkayid, Clan Nova Cat had managed to get a clear picture of how they wanted to fight in the future. The precepts that sum it up were the need to less rely on complex logistics, the quick and aggressive tactics so typical of Clan Nova Cat, their high priority on accuracy and a certain flexibility. For any other Clan apart perhaps for Clan Wolf, this would seem like a complex set of rules almost impossible to mix into something coherent. Thanks to their mystic nature, Clan Nova Cat seems to have managed to fit everything in one idea as one Warrior said “even the one thousand heads hydra so heavily armoured has only one heart and the best way to deal with it is to strike, strike and strike at it.”
Unwilling to keep the whole production costs for their Clans, the Nova Cat Merchants proposed to their Khans to work in collaboration with two Clans that could understand this philosophy, Clan Goliath Scorpion and Clan Ghost Bear. Letting their Merchants bargain with both Clans, the Nova Cats began working on the Configurations.


Capabilities
Configuration Prime follows the new fighting philosophy of Clan Nova Cat with two ER PPC in the right arm with one ER Large Laser in the left one for both long and heavy firepower. Due to the liberal use of hidden units by the Inner Sphere, an Active Probe and 2 Medium Pulse Lasers were also added to both detect them and eliminate infantry and tank units before they can harm the Hellcat. This full energy package is backed up by a Targeting Computer and by 24 Double Heat Sinks, allowing it to nearly fire all its weapons all the time.

Configuration A was proposed by Clan Goliath Scorpion when they joined the project. With 3 Large Pulse Lasers and 2 ER Medium Lasers, it can stay on the battlefield forever (thanks to the 21 Double Heat Sinks available) whereas a Targeting Computer only improve the precision typical of both Clans. 4 Jump Jets allows the Hellcat to pick its firing positions where it can unleash its firepower against the selected targets.

Configuration B is the work of both Clan Ghost Bear and Clan Nova Cat based on the Archer ARC-2K and ARC-5R they both had to fight in the Free Rasalhague Republic and the Draconis Combine. With twin LRM-15 coupled to Artemis-IV and two tons of ammo each in the torsos and a Large Pulse Laser in each arm, the Hellcat B can fire at longer ranges without any major problem as . Those thinking to get at closer ranges will get under the fire of 4 ER Medium Lasers, which are reminiscent of the classical Archer.
To keep it running cool even when it jumps with its 4 Jump Jets, 16 Double Heat Sinks are not enough to let it alpha-strike but let the Warrior in this Hellcat decide how to fire in brackets.

Configuration C is obviously designed to take down Aerospace Fighters, a major threat in the Inner Sphere as illustrated by the death of ilKhan Leo Showers, killed by Tyra Miraborg in her Shilone. With a Large Pulse Laser and LB 10-X in each arm, it has enough field of fire to take down any incoming Fighter. 4 tons of ammo also give the Hellcat C the endurance or the flexibility to deal with all kinds of targets.

Configuration D is designed with one idea: harass the targeted opponent at long range and close to deal quickly with a finishing strike to the weakened ‘Mech.
An ER Large Laser and an ER PPC provide the needed firepower at long range with a Targeting Computer helping Clan Warriors to lock on their targets. The killing blow is provided by 6 Streak SRM-6 and 3 tons of ammo. To add an extra layer of protection as it gets closer, an ECM Suite was also added.
With 15 Double Heat Sinks, this Configuration seems a bit overcooled but the extra Heat Sinks should in the mind of the design team allow for the use of the ER PPC or the ER Large Laser if some Streak SRM-6 do not manage to receive a lock.

Configuration E is an urban fighter. With 4 Jump Jets and an Active Probe, it can at the same time get in position quickly and detect hidden units.
2 Large Pulse Lasers and a LB 20-X with three tons of ammo can take good care of most targets, leaving the smaller ones to the Small Pulse Laser.

Configuration F is an oddity for Clan ‘Mechs, an artillery ‘Mech. With 2 Arrow-IV Launchers and 6 tons of ammo, it can provide a heavy and mobile artillery support to other units. 4 Jump Jets and 2 ER Medium Lasers can be used if anyone comes too close to it.

Configuration G is loosely based on an upgraded Warhammer. With 2 Gauss Rifles and 4 tons of ammo, it can deal with most targets at long ranges. A Streak SRM-6 and 4 ER Small Lasers can be added later at will thanks to the low heat generated by the Gauss Rifles.


Battle History
The Hellcat received its baptism of fire on Avon when forces of the 3rd Prosperina Hussars made probing raids in Clan held territory.
Avon being at the end of the campaign, the regiment was eager to get quickly in and out, thus agreeing to the Trial proposed by the elements of the 3rd Garrison Cluster of Clan Nova Cat that had discovered the raiding advanced units.
The combat was fought between both commanders with on one side a Hellcat Prime and a heavier Thug. The Clan ‘Mech unleashed its energy weapons as quickly as it could destroying the Thug through a real rain of violet coloured energy beams, earning the nickname Violet Lightning or Shiden from the Kuritan soldiers, which became its Inner Sphere designation.


Deployment
Clan Ghost Bear and Clan Nova Cat have assigned the bulk of the Hellcat to the rebuilding of units that suffered during Operation Revival. Clan Goliath Scorpion has used its Hellcats to reinforce units, replacing older units with this new one (among others).


Notable ‘MechWarriors
Star Commander George is the Nova Cat Warrior that fought the first battle on Avon. Assigned at that time to the 3rd Garrison Cluster, he was later reassigned to the 119th Striker Cluster for his good performance during several raids made by House Kurita on Avon.

Warrior Bjørn is a member of the 12th Bear Chevaliers and a veteran of Operation Revival from Wave Four on. Build like a bear (which make some comment behind his back that he must be of the Elemental genotype), he was reported missing in action during the fight around Luk on Tukkayid but managed to somehow reach a Clan Dropship weeks later in spite of his injuries.
Assigned a new Hellcat, he has taken a likening to Configuration E for its raw brutality and he is always eager to take the lead of any offensive action in his ‘Mech, Fell-Handed

Disappointed with performance of the Nova Cat at Luthien and Tukayyid, Khan Leroux ordered his scientist caste to come up with different
and better configurations. So terrible was the Omnimech's performance that he also ordered that the Nova Cat be renamed the Hellcat.
The dependency of energy-based weapons was seen as a drawback by the new team of scientists assigned to the task and they focused
on heavy hitting autocannons and gauss rifles in their new mission. The first configuration to fall to the new direction was the Prime con-
figuration, which saw all of the heavy energy-based weapons and all of the extra heat sinks stripped away and replaced by a matched
pair of powerful gauss rifles, each gauss rifle is fed by large, by Clan standards, three-ton ammo bins. A mix of lighter lasers act as secondary
weapons with a pair of small pulse laser mounted in the rear to counter attacks by Elementals.

A total of six Nova Cat Omnimechs were part of the reinforcements that made it to the Inner Sphere in time for the assault
on Luthien. All six were spread throughout the front-line clusters that participated in the battle. Of the six, only two were serviceable
to retreat fro the world. Some sixteen months later, a Nova Cat was spotted amongst a Combine raiding force on Itabaiana.
The best that the Nova Cat watch could determine from the assorted battleroms was that the crudely made weapons featured a mix
of Clan and Inner Sphere weaponry with the ER Large Lasers being of Clan manufacture, while the remaining weapons are of Combine
manufacture. The reversed engineeredClan version feature an ER PPC, ER large laser and ER medium laser in each arm with  total
of twenty-seven double heat sinks fighting an uphill battle to keep this variant from overheating.

Attached you will also find a notional layout of the suspected spheroid build upon which this configuration is based. While it is not
heat intensive as our new variant of the Hellcat, it is ideally suited for combat at long-range just like our more advanced version.

The Hellcat G is based on the SLDF-era Rifleman and features a matched pair of ER large lasers LB 5-X autocannons mounted in the arms.
Each of the autocannons has two tons of ammunition available. All secondary weapons are mounted in the side torsos and feature a mix
of pulse lasers and machine guns. Four added double heat sinks are needed to handle the heat built up by mix of lasers.

Another big gun configuration, the Hellcat J feature a pair of Ultra-10 autocannons backed up by a pair of LRM10 launchers. As an ammo
dependent vehicle it does suffer from somewhat shallow ammo bins. This makes it rather unpopular among the younger Mechwarriors in
the touman. With only a pair of ER medium lasers as secondary weapons, the unpopularity is even further reinforced.

Hard to believe it is September already and another great design contest has come and gone. This time around our five usual suspects submitted thirty-nine entries to compete with four canon variants which did not feature advanced tech. I broke every configuration down into twelve overall concepts and as you know there can only be ten winners. With the ‘Mechs rather slow overall speed (4/6) I did favor those with superior range over close up hitting power. I figure when confronted by Clan opponents of equal size who are faster you are gonna at least want to be in range to compete with your greater pod space rather than be to overspecialized for short ranged assaults. Once more this challenge is too close to call but first things first let’s get to best fluff and best InnerSphere designation.

While I had an extensive overview already prepared I thought that Bradshaw resolved the major point I let hang in the air. Alluding to some Diamond Shark industrial espionage helped establish the Night Gyr basis which I was looking for. Ice Hellion was a solid second place showing here with good depth and analysis. Both drakensis and marauder648 were good but a bit to generic and I’d like to reward someone for taking a chance in a good way. Unfortunately, Abele this Mech was not available at the time of Luthien or Tukayyid so while I appreciate your effort I have to rank your fluff as fifth. Point to Bradshaw!

For InnerSphere name designation I found that Ungulate (a hoofed animal) by Bradshaw was last place this time around. I just didn’t get that reference at all and while simple Abele’s Nova Cat was better even if the Mech wasn’t around for Luthien or Tukayyid. It makes sense as it is the Clan which uses it first in the InnerSphere so not bad. However, I was looking for something Draconis or Japanese like Donryu (Storm Dragon) from marauder648 or Supon (Snapping Turtle) from drakensis but Ice Hellion was first. Plus, his Shiden (Violet Lightning) had a good story behind it in Battle History so point to Ice Hellion!

For Primary Configuration I again deferred to canon which starts us off this time with twin ER PPCs and three ER Large Lasers. Even with fourteen Double Heat Sinks you don’t have a prayer to cool off with this thing. As I guide to competing against the potential of this canon offering I looked to every multiple ER PPC configuration entered. In all there were four challengers that I deemed close enough to the original intent of canon version. The most radical departure from canon was marauder648 F which was more of a generalist holding onto both ER PPCs and dropping five additional Double Heat Sinks. Supporting the PPCs are an LRM-20 linked to an Artemis IV FCS, two Streak SRM-4s, and six ER Small Lasers. This creates more of a bracket fire machine with a Mechwarrior having to monitor his weapon fire carefully depending on range. Not bad but I wanted to keep closer to the original if possible. Ice Hellion Prime kept two ER PPCs and an ER Large Laser while dropping one of the additional Double Heat Sinks to include two Medium Pulse Lasers, an Active Probe, and a Targeting Computer. The two Pulses make me think you were just trying to be different from someone else rather than going with four ER Mediums. Abele E retained two ER PPCs and two ER Large Lasers increased additional Double Heat Sinks by two to deal with all their weapon heat and had enough room to spare for two ER Medium Lasers. I like it a lot but Bradshaw Prime was even better in my opinion with a simple and straightforward swap of an ER Large Laser for a Targeting Computer which reminds me of the fix for the overheated Nova Prime. Now you can fire close to everything and accurately too, design point to Bradshaw!

As marauder648 backed a few (the first three to be precise) of the canon configurations it was this one where I felt he was most likely to be right. Four ER Larges all tied to a Targeting Computer with enough Heat Sinks to fire and run all day long and you can also jump. Not only is it a good long-range sniper but it is so very Nova Cat as it was this Clan that perfected the Clan ER Large and came up with such designs as the Supernova to utilize it. So those challengers who featured multiple ER Larges would have a tough road to hoe. Six qualified in my eyes for this concept including drakensis Prime, drakensis F, Abele D, Abele E, and Abele G. None came as close to unseating canon A as drakensis A which takes bracket firing to a new level. Two ER Larges and two LRM-15s with Artemis can deal fifty points of damage at long-range or until you get into reach of the seven ER Mediums and did I mention that everything is linked to a Targeting Computer? You can fire one bracket or the other for nearly the same damage (50 or 49) and near amount of heat generated (32 or 35), nasty. However, I still can’t see it replacing the Hell Cat A from canon, too Nova Cat this one, very close call though. Point to canon!

The LRM boats are rolled in starting with canon Configuration B which sports six LRM-15s with thirteen reloads each and two ER Mediums for backup. It has enough Heat Sinks to dissipate its main fire support battery and can inflict massive saturation damage (90) with these missiles. I agree with marauder648 again that this is another good one but four challengers would step forward. I should also mention here that Arrow IV Missile Artillery concept narrowly failed after receiving strong consideration. Even though I felt Ice Hellion F fit the design well I feel that this premier front line Mech would not be commonly carrying such a load out, sorry. While Bradshaw B1 tried one upping the canon B by adding another LRM-15 for a total of seven which is super impressive it failed to account for the massive heat spike generated while firing this massive salvo. That left three entries which featured four LRM-20s with Artemis IV FCS which generate 24 heat and 80 damage possibly. I have to say that that even though these generate ten less damage potential then canon B it is a winning concept for their superior missile to hit ratio. Unfortunately for Abele B he added no heat sinks to deal with the extra heat generated from missile fire despite having good backup weapons and 15 reloads. Bradshaw B also had 15 reloads and three Double Heat Sinks but 2 ER Smalls are pretty weak support weapons for the main load. While not perfect drakensis E had two extra Double Heat Sinks accounting for most heat buildup and a healthy supply of backup with four ER Mediums. While only having twelve reloads available hurt his case somewhat I think this is the best LRM configuration. Point to drakensis!

C was the final canon configuration which qualified for our contest here but agreeing with marauder648 again this one doesn’t stand a chance. Utilizing smaller caliber Ultra ACs and a LB 5-X on this ‘pocket Assault’ was not the way to go in my opinion but mid sizes I can see. I know that statement is bad news to Bradshaw E but he did focus in on the right concept here which is anti-air in my opinion. Ten challengers all with at least two Large Pulses squared off in this concept arena to replace the undergunned original. I should also mention another concept here featuring Ultra AC/10s which didn’t make it. A configuration sporting these weapons could have been formidable but Abele J was the only game in town and just didn’t have what it took in my opinion to make it to the final ten. With more of a ground assailant mind set Ice Hellion E, marauder648 C, Bradshaw C, and Abele F were all good but just not what I was looking for here. They were a formidable subset and one which you may indeed see later but for now let’s get back to shooting down fighters. Some folks thought two Large Pulse weren’t enough as both Bradshaw A and Ice Hellion A featured three while Abele A went with four Large Pulses. If you went Targeting Computer and nine Double Heat Sinks I think you would have one Abele but two contestants had a good AA combo. With two LB 10-Xs each with twenty shots and two Large Pulses cooled by two additional Double Heat Sinks both drakensis D and Ice Hellion C were identical entries. As I said gents the four Large Pulses with a Targeting Computer would have beaten you but that wasn’t here so one of you gets the win. Both have solid fluff but drakensis D was the first one to be entered so the very narrow tie break goes to him. Point two to drakensis!!

A lot of folks seemed to embrace the big guns (Ultra AC/20s and LB 20-X ACs) next so let’s talk about both concepts for our new D configuration. I had envisioned the best from each walking away with their own configuration win but after serious consideration there can be only one. My reason is the range factor of this 4/6 OmniMech which should be higher on this ‘Pocket Assault’. Without superior speed to close range I feel it would be disadvantageous to have too many tight quarter sluggers in the arsenal. There were four Ultra/AC 20 contenders including marauder648 D, drakensis C, Abele C, and Bradshaw H. While Bradshaw H was the best of this subset I ultimately choose the LB 20-X AC winner over this one which surprised me. Usually I am more apt to pick the Ultra AC/20 but here I thought the LB 20-X AC was superior. Especially those configs which doubled down which Abele C did while splitting the difference. Very impressive especially when you consider he lumped on an ER PPC which is a big gun trifecta. Didn’t love the Medium Pulse inclusion though and maybe would have gone with this one if you had replaced them with Double Heat Sinks to mitigate build up concerns. With Ice Hellion E and Abele D sporting only one LB 20-X that means that Bradshaw D which is the only other config to double down with two LB 20-Xs gets the win. I liked the arsenal which includes four ER Mediums and two additional Double Heat Sinks as well as the fluff which adds to the flavor saying that some pilots swap Autocannons meaning Ultras are possible here. Close range I know but extremely nasty firepower and we need at least one of those, point two to Bradshaw!!

While Streak SRM-6s are a close-range weapon like the big Autocannons previously discussed our two E contenders have other long weapons to offset this disadvantage. Bradshaw C as mentioned previously had two Large Pulses which are super accurate and grouped them with five Streak SRM-6s. You really can’t miss and this entry featured jump jets for extra mobility and three additional Double Heat Sinks to deal with a heat build up which this thing does. A fine entry but one that is upstaged by what is becoming a signature Ice Hellion delivery. His D is one of my favorite submissions as it pairs an ER PPC and ER Large Laser both tied to a Targeting Computer for excellent long-range sniping. Add to that six Streak SRM-6s which will obliterate anyone foolish enough to close with this model. With only forty five rounds this missile barrage will only last seven to eight turns but he ain’t missing and I am pretty sure your not surviving. While these long and short range brackets can’t be fired at the same time this combo is deadly and I approve. An ECM Suite insures that opponents cannot disrupt his superior targeting systems and therefore have to endure the full punishment this machine deals out. He also included four Double Heat Sinks to cool off weapons fire from either bracket. Point to Ice Hellion!

With the consolidation of big Autocannon configurations, the failure of Ultra AC/10s to be widely considered, the dishonor or unglory of Artillery we are left with Generalists to round out things here for F. While the best one was reserved for last there are several others which are pretty darn solid. A solid ground assailant is bought to us by marauder648 C with marauder 648 F going with an effective missile energy mix. Bradshaw F feels like an upgraded InnerSphere Atlas to me and gets second prize here though. It was Abele F which stands out to me the most here and his submission was based on Nova Cat E which features ATMs not allowed because of their future tech status. With twin LRM-15s and two Streak SRM-6s supported by two Large Pulse Lasers this is a very nice variant. An ECM again prevents disruption of advanced missile targeting systems and four Double Heat Sinks help cool it. While not enough to Alpha Strike constantly I think you could get away with it once or maybe twice an engagement but with an average of fifty damage at long and short ranges with accuracy it is more of a bracket firer. Point to Abele!

G is for Gauss and we had at least four challengers utilize this weapon as their main gun during this contest. I like the approach because of the Hell Cat’s large pod space availability and relatively low heat threshold. So this big ballistic fits perhaps twice over which Ice Hellion G and Abele Prime both attempted. I think drakensis B was just faster on the draw here when he put my favorite combo together this time with two Gauss Rifles and a single ER PPC. With two dozen rounds of ammo for each rifle and only a single PPC to generate heat this variant can really fire all day long at range with three knock punches a round coming. Very nice and four ER Smalls are also included as backup which I might have gone in another direction within all honesty but your core is solid. I didn't see Bradshaw Configuration I probably cause of reviewing offline data on my galaxy s3. It is good and on par with drakensis B. While accurate it does not dissipate all its weapon heat which puts a crimp in things. Your over by five heat each time you fire. If you ditched the Jump Jets and went with more Heat Sinks than I would have had to change the decision. Sorry about the oversight but still point three to drakensis!!!

The complete exception to my range rule and something Nova-esque which fits here is the new H configuration bought to us by massed Medium Pulse Lasers. The accuracy provided by these weapons can devastate opponents and so this became my second (and last) close in killer. Abele H was a highly mobile (4 Jump Jet) eight Medium Pulse battery supplemented by two Streak SRM-6s. Eight Double Heat Sinks help cool it and two Small Pulse Lasers (which I could have done without) added to its firepower even further. Bradshaw G was just better though with ten Medium Pulse Lasers all tied into a freaking Targeting Computer for extra evil not missing wowness. Nine additional Double Heat Sinks cool this weapon fire completely even though they don’t account for movement. An Active Probe helps you find an eliminate any poor infantry man who dares raise a rifle to your presence and oh yeah you can jump too. Yikes and away, point three to Bradshaw!!!

K stands for Kerensky and in this case the best fluffed configuration in this contest. The best generalist and biggest middle finger to the Wolves for their interference in the Hell Cat design is drakensis F which is modeled after the Atlas II of none other than Nicholas Kerensky. It features an impressive array worthy of all the ‘Pocket Assault” status we have talked about with an LRM-20 linked to an Artemis, two Medium Pulses, a Streak SRM-6, an LB 10-X, and two ER Large Lasers. With only two additional Double Heat Sinks you have to watch what you fire when but this is more of a message configuration which is loud and clear. Love the Trial of Grievance mention as well which is all too appropriate, great job and point four to drakensis!!!!

So we have an overall tie for first place this time around with drakensis and Bradshaw each earning four points, well done men! Ice Hellion got two points this time around giving him a bronze medal this time around. Abele also pointed this week along with canon although I should point out that marauder648 correctly backed that even though he received no points in this contest. Well done everyone, I think we certainly improved the Hell Cat and really bought it into the Quicksilver story with your efforts. Happy with tie but did you see the i config i added last Wednesday i count 5 gauss configs

Disturbing picture, I get the hoofed foot thing but still think it is way too generic. If you had some fearsome animal with hoofs than better.

I had Abele Prime, drak B, Bradshaw F, and Ice Hellion G as the four with Gauss. I didn't see your Configuration I probably cause of reviewing offline data on my galaxy s3. It is good and on par with drakensis B. While accurate it can't dissipate all the weapon heat generated. I am still sticking with drak but a close call bud. Sorry about the oversight. I am amending the review now.

Nobody went 3 ER PPCs, 4 ton Targeting Computer, 13 Double Heat Sinks, Active Probe, ECM Suite, and two ER Smalls for a nice command configuration I came up with. This cools all heat like your Gauss/ER PPC combos and has accuracy with high tech electronics.

Also did a 4 Large Pulse, 5 ton Targeting Computer, with 9 Double Heat Sinks for the ideal AA platform but those were my ideas.  ;)

Okay Bradshaw, I have amended the review to include your I configuration which was overlooked. My fault. It didn't change my original decision but I feel bad about the oversight. Thanks for the correction and additional on time submission.

I'm unclear on how 13 double heatsinks (absorbing 26 heat) would cool the 45 heat of 3 ER PPCs even without the ER Small Lasers. Did you mean 23 DHS?

I forgot the word 'additional' in there drak. So the total number for my command configuration would be 24 Double Heat Sinks which would dissipate 48 total heat.

It is surprising how well energy configurations work with the Hell Cat (Nova Cat). I figured ballistic and missile weapons would be the way to go.

First, congratulations to the winners. I am lucky to have my fluff allowing me to score some points.  8)

Not bad but I wanted to keep closer to the original if possible. Ice Hellion Prime kept two ER PPCs and an ER Large Laser while dropping one of the additional Double Heat Sinks to include two Medium Pulse Lasers, an Active Probe, and a Targeting Computer. The two Pulses make me think you were just trying to be different from someone else rather than going with four ER Mediums.

Not really Takiro as I tried to stay close to the original picture with the same number of weapons in each arm (something I tried to do in most Configurations) and 4 ER Medium Lasers were too demanding on the Heat Sinks. With my weapons, I can alpha strike and move every two turns and the other turn, I can fire everything except the Medium Pulse Lasers.
I tried to think a little outside of my usual box to optimise this Configuration. :P
