Quicksilver Upgrades #10: Coyotl (??) 40 tons
« on: January 21, 2018, 11:06:57 PM »

Here is a real curveball for you guys that I really doubted anyone saw coming. To some extent the Quicksilver Upgrade of the Coyotl was a surprise even for me but having considered it before and given the backstory below I think you will see why that such a contest is indeed relevant and I hope you participate in it having as much fun possible.

The first OmniMech based on the Star League Mercury ever produced in 2854 by Clan Coyote was the Coyotl. The modular war machine proved its worth from its first victories at the Battle of Roenich in that very same year. Five years later it along with other early OmniMech designs took full advantage of their strategic flexibility when Coyote’s Alpha Galaxy rapidly expanded its empire. Unfortunately, its proud early history was soon eclipsed by other newer designs and the Coyotl languished into premature disuse.

The design was ultimately retired in 2943 as the Coyote’s empire began to shrink and replacement parts became more and more scarce. As Operation Revival came into sight the design could only be found serving in ceremonial parades, on display in museums, at scientific research grounds, and the rare bandit sighting. It would have likely remained there if not for the efforts of Elam Tchernovkov the efforts of the Watch. In collaboration with scientists who were experimenting with an ultra-high tech gear the Khan managed to overcome Sullivan Koga in 3052 and rise to the Khanship of the Clan.

As part of his goal to achieve ‘Total Modularity’ in the Coyote Touman he ordered the Coyotl along with two other OmniMech designs to be reactivated prior to Quicksilver. While some accused Elam of pointless scheming it did prove fortuitous to have these machines in place to challenge for position in the Trials to come. Challenging the Pouncer for the forty-ton Vampire slot the newly refurbished Coyotl demonstrated its capabilities but ultimately was defeated. While the design was denied a Quicksilver production line all the renewed interest and limited manufacturing meant that the Coyotes could still utilize it. Pressed into service to modularize its second line forces - the Coyotl serves the Clan once again. While derided as a Solahma OmniMech by some refurbished Coyotl have already shown how viable they are.

While the Coyotl has never before seen service in the InnerSphere and as a result lacks a secondary designation I suppose anything is possible. Did an Explorer Corps team spot one or have some bandits had a run in with one in the Deep Periphery. Alternatively, a group of Dark Caste group might have one or two in service which drew somebody’s attention in an intelligence agency somewhere. Granted it is unlikely but there may just be a name out there that a non-Clanner gave this thing along with a story to justify it. What do you guys think?

So please discuss what you like about the existing configurations (would you keep them as is?) and introduce your alternatives. Please explain why yours is best, what role it plays with your modifications, etc. Remember I love fluff. Again, you are not allowed to alter the base design itself but the configurations are opened game. Clan Level 2 is the tech level for this contest just after Tukayyid so no ATMs, AP Gauss, Heavy Lasers, or Light Active Probes! Teamwork is also very welcomed so if you have an idea it is acceptable to collaborate. Since multiple configurations can win whoever gets the most wins, wins! Bonus points for new Quicksilver overview and an InnerSphere designation!!

Overview:
Retired over a century before Operation Revival and only in use by Clan Coyote, the Coyotl would be almost entirely unknown to the Inner Sphere as of its return to service in 3052 were it not for Phelan Wolf (later Phelan Ward) who observed one on display during his brief visit to Strana Mechty and enquired into this. He disclosed this data to Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht shortly afterwards and after the Battle of Tukkayid the information was widely circulated. Due to a minor miscommunication, Spheroid warbooks flag the chassis data under the designation 'Coyote'.

Capabilities:
Revising the Coyotl Prime configuration with many generations of experience with the use of OmniMechs, designers moved the LRM launcher into the left arm where it wouldn't interfere with carrying elementals. Reflecting the more limited resources made available to second-tier units, the designers replaced the Streak launcher with a standard SRM launcher. This freed up the tonnage to replace the medium pulse laser with an array of small lasers. While this means the Coyotl Prime would almost certainly shut down on an alpha strike, warriors are expected to primarily use their speed to keep the fight at ranges where the LRMs and PPC are most effective, supplementing with the SRMs where opportunity allows. The small lasers aren't quite an afterthought though - in close terrain the Coyotl Prime is well suited to supporting a dismounted point of Elementals with this battery of lasers.

With the mobility of jump-jets, the Coyotl A carried a large pulse laser and Streak SRMs for medium range engagements. The Coyotes have now refocused it for longer range battles with the SRMs replaced by four LRM racks. While not a true long-range platform by Clan standards, the new A-configuration can certainly fill that role against bandits or the Inner Sphere.

Fleshing out the capabilities of the Coyotl, the Coyotes have added a dedicated sniper configuration. The Coyotl B is primarily built around a pair of extended range large lasers tied into a targeting computer. This strains the cooling systems unless the B is moving cautiously and it's normal to alternate firing of the lasers when the Coyotl is moving between sniping positions, swapping in  the LRMs. An alpha strike is still viable if a suitable target is available.

Another standard demand for OmniMechs is a missile platform and the Coyotl C carries three launchers. Although proposals to use Artemis guidance were considered, the expense was judged excessive for use by second-tier units and the Coyotl C instead barrages forty-five missiles. When the ammunition runs out a pair of extended range lasers is available for use.

The second configuration to use a targeting computer, it's harder for warriors to justify requesting the Coyotl D outside of high profile trials. Khan Elam Tchernovkov personally authorised the configuration for use by the two of his proteges in Trials of Bloodright in order to raise the profile of the Coyotl and the balance of agility, firepower and durability more than paid off.

A heavy autocannon loaded with three tons of ammunition gives the Coyotl E considerable punch, backed up by a pair of lasers. A flamer gives limited anti-infantry firepower. Well balanced in heat management, the configuration compromises relatively effectively.

The Coyotl F is an experiment in using the design as an electronic platform. While it isn't in line with zellbrigen, the Coyotes concede that a second-line formation may need the advantage, having learned from the losses taken by their over-extended garrison clusters in the last century. The F configuration can provide target designation for LRMs and for Arrow IV artillery. As this role would involve closing in on the enemy, sophisticated sensors turn it into an effective scout. For its own combat role, two lasers and a pair of machine guns give limited firepower, enough to contest other scouts but not for heavy battle.

Drak, I'm half done, thought I'm doing well with a in-character rabble-rousing, 'Yay us!' entry I started within 5 minutes of Takiro's post, and like a bolt of lightning, you're already finished.  And with a stroke of genius, to boot - Phelan or Focht would literally be the only legitimate source of this information, out of universe.  I'm calling for the point to be awarded now - I know I won't find anything else so plausible.

It is a simple and straight forward designation that works well but I can think of others. Let's not throw cold water on any inspiration out there Pins!  ;)

Thanks again Red Pins for helping me finalize the first Quicksilver Upgrade, the Fire Moth (Dasher). I hope everyone checks it out and takes pride in their work!

Thanks Red Pins.

Last week I rushed it through early in the week because I was at a Con from Wednesday to Sunday so it was then or not at all. And this week I have two days off to recover from the Con... so good opportunity.

I look forward to seeing what you've got.

Coyotl II

The reintroduction of the Coyotl came as a surprise for many of the Clans.  All but forgotten and not seen in nearly a century the reintroduction of the Coyotl raised more than a few eyebrows and drew laughter from some quarters.

The reintroduction of a centuries old design though did give the Scientists something to do and they started comparing the older design with more modern Mechs.  The closest two competitors in common service, the Ice Ferret and Viper, whilst faster were considerably less well armed than the Coyotl which was only slightly slower than the other designs whilst being considerably faster than the Wolves new Pouncer design.

This combination of speed whilst also packing considerable firepower were all seen as positives even when compared to Mech’s that many had said were superior.
Upgrades to the sensors, TTS and other systems were all minor but the biggest debate came to what to arm the Mech with.

Variants

Prime – After several studies, one blistering row and a Trial of Grievance over the matter, it was agreed that the weapons fit of the Prime Coyotl was perfectly acceptable.  This was because it offered a wide range of firepower at varying ranges and was flexible enough to engage any target.  An argument was put forwards to replace the medium pulse laser with a pair of ER Mediums or a quartet of ER Smalls, but with it being an OmniMech this could be done at a few minutes notice.

A – The combination of a large pulse laser and a 210-meter jumping distance was seen as eminently desirable and would not be altered but the secondary armament was to give more battlefield endurance.  The paired Streak SRM-4’s was removed as was the small pulse laser, and a Streak SRM-6 was installed as well as a pair of ER Medium lasers.
Although this did result in a higher heat curve, firepower as a whole, went up, and the fearsome mobility was retained.  Some pilots still preferred the cooler running original version though and this also became a common A configuration.

B – Designed as a fast harasser and sniper the B is still flexible enough to engage a target at differing ranges.  For long range work an ER Large laser is supported by an LRM-15 that is linked with Artemis IV fire controls.  Drawing from a 2-ton ammo bin the missile launcher has adequate endurance, more than enough for most Clan battles.
At shorter ranges an ER Medium laser and ER Small laser can be brought to bear on a target.  The electronics were upgraded with the addition of an ECM suite whilst an AMS is also installed to defend the Mech against counter-battery fire.

C – Based on the A, the C is designed as a heavy scout and raider and retains the full 210 meter jumping range of the A.  The electronics are enhanced to fit a TAG, ECM and Active probe.  With its probe the C must get close so it is armed quite simply with a pair of Medium pulse lasers in each arm.  Whilst rather light in terms of raw punch, the firepower is enough to cut down most hostile scout Mech’s and vehicles allowing the C to also act as a scout hunter as it could outrun most and thanks to its jumping capability it could also chase down faster Mech’s that might lack its jumping ability

D – A support unit the D was quickly called the Lupus II due to its similarity with the large machine.  Simply armed with a pair of Artemis enhanced LRM-15s each with their own 2-ton ammo bin, the Mech’s defensive armament for opponents that got close was still enough to ward off a threat or finish one weakened by the missile barrages. A pair of ER Mediums and a single ER Small rounded out the armament.  The sheer speed of the D was also a capable defensive measure as it was able to outrun all but the fastest Mech’s, and outgun most that could catch it.

E – The E was designed as a walking gun and spawned its near sister the F as well.  Armament is limited but potent with a Gauss rifle giving the Mech its main reach and punch at negligible heat.  With two tons of ammunition it had adequate endurance whilst an ER small and an ER medium provided some firepower once that was spent.    In some ways this smaller, lighter Mech was similar to the newly introduced Shadow Cat and fulfilled the same role in battle.

F - A close kissing cousin of the E, the F was viewed more as a mobile AA weapon and anti-vehicle platform, to this end it was armed with a LB-10 autocannon that drew from an impressive 3-ton ammo bin.  Supporting this was a pair of ER medium lasers and a single flamer for anti-infantry work.  In simulations the designs speed let it get amongst vehicle formations and it was also effective against air threats and Elemental squads.  This versatility was seen as a boon and it was also very cool running.
The E and F were both Wolf designed variants, the F was built to engage Spheroid tanks at close range where many could not bring their heavy guns to bare thanks to the large number of designs with PPCs in service.  The E was built purely to engage Mechs and could do so with ease.

Deployment

Initially only deployed by Clan Coyote the Coyotl II was deployed to reinforce second line units and free up ostensibly more modern Omni's for front line Galaxies.  But the Mech was also found in limited numbers in more mainline Galaxies.  This changed after the Refusal War, Clan Wolf, desperate for Mech's to rebuild their shattered Tourman traded with the Coyotes, trading resources for production and managing to win the right to produce the Coyotl II to fill out battered Striker and Recon Stars.  Although rather rare it was seen by forces on the Lyran front where it earned two designations.  The first being the Bushwhacker IIC due to it being misidentified as a Clan 'copy' of the newer Federated Suns Mech mainly due to some visual similarities.  But this was a bit of a mouthful so some units started calling it the Bushman or Bushmaster.

Thoughts

I had a bit of trouble with the Coyotl, as its actually a damn good Mech, superior to the Dragonfly and Fenris by dint of being just more sensible and a bit slower. Its fast enough, heavily armoured for its size and can pack a wallop, its honestly a shame it got replaced.  I was looking at some changes to the Prime config but the weapons mix and combination are just simply too good to really improve upon. Its got a good hard slap from the PPC, crit seeking, more long range and short range firepower with the LRM, and a pulse laser.  All this on a 40 ton chassis.  Its why I went with the prime weapons loadout as my Prime, its flexible, its varied and its not an ER laser boat which i'd normally go for on a smaller machine :)

"Wing-ed battle comes, and finds me ready!"

Before I list my entry, the normal qualifiers; without HMP or SSW, there may be errors.  Also, I note the use of Drakensis's notion of how to explain the IS reporting code - I make no claim upon the idea,  it was used simply because it made so much sense.  I would also like to note I troll Sarna and my own TRO copies for Config ideas; the Small laser battery idea came from the Storm Giant, a HMP Assault mech I played nearly a decade ago.

Without further ado - the Coyotl.

Overview
The Coyotl began the slide to obscurity with the Coyote’s losses in the Kerensky Cluster as the remaining Clans regained technical parity with the inventors of the OmniMech.  The loss of territory and resources continued, and as the Clan foundered the Coyotl was retired in favor of newer designs, ceasing production in 2943.  Nearly a century later, Phelan Wolf (later Phelan Ward) observed one on display during his brief visit to Strana Mechty and enclosed a brief description of the Coyotl in his message to Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht shortly before the Battle of Tukkayid.
As part of his goal to achieve ‘Total Modularity’ in the Coyote Touman, Tchernovkov ordered the reactivation of the Coyotl and other retired designs to expand the Clan’s second-line Clusters.  While its defeat in the Quicksilver Trials to the Pouncer and the strong prejudices of the Coyote Warrior Caste have led some to deride the Coyotl as a Solahma unit, the redesigned Configurations have allowed it to bolster the Touman once again as the countdown to the resumption of Operation: Revival continues.

Capabilities
While the physical reconstruction of the Coyotl was unremarkable, the consideration of new OmniMech Configurations was a contentious issue – many Warriors refused to pilot Configurations intended for garrison units, leading to an unusually large number of configurations.

(P)
Combining aspects of the original Primary and –A Configurations, the Coyotl retains the original ER-PPC but moves it to the Center Torso to prevent a quick, knock-out blow from depriving the Coyotl of its most dangerous weapon.  Capitalizing on its speed by adding a second Medium Pulse Laser and placing them in each arm for the maximum field of fire, the LRM-10 is left for a dedicated long-range Configuration and twin SRM-4 (ST) fed by a single ton of ammunition are placed in each side Torso.  A Flamer in the Right Arm uses the remaining tonnage.

(A)
Dedicated to long-range engagements, the –A mimics the Timber Wolf-P to a large extent.  Twin ER-Large lasers with ER-Mediums are placed in the Arms, while twin LRM-5 are placed in each of the side Torsos.  A Flamer mounted immediately below the cockpit is the sole anti-personnel weapon.  Wolf Warriors are generally unimpressed by front-line Coyote Warriors choosing to imitate their signature OmniMech, singling it out for challenges.  Combined with the unfortunate heat burden, the –A is rarely chosen when encountering Clan Wolf in Trials.

The -B Configuration provides Clan Coyote a combination scout and fast-assault unit installing an ER-Small Laser battery in each of the Left- and Right Torsos with a Targeting Computer in the Center Torso to increase accuracy, freeing it from ammunition concerns.

(C)
Carrying the largest direct-fire weapon available, the –C Configuration uses an Ultra/20 AC with three tons of ammo to apply direct damage to a foe.  The damage potential of the Autocannon can cripple or destroy most Light units with a single shot, forcing an enemy to treat the Coyotl as a deadly threat until the ammunition runs out.  The customary Flamer is mounted in the Left Arm, providing an anti-infantry weapon.
Stars of aggressively-piloted Coyotl-Cs have charged into Trials, most notably against Clan Fire Madrill on Foster, ostensibly as a distraction only to leave a trail of destroyed and crippled units behind them.  The high success rate of the Coyotl-C has found a match with older Warriors nearing the end of their careers, looking to delay their transfer to a Solahma or training unit.

Ultra/20 AC     12 tons/8 Crits     RT
3xAmmo            3 tons/3 Crits     LT
Flamer            0.5 tons/1 Crits     LA

Although the Coyotl is considered a dedicated skirmisher rather than a support, the role of LRM support for heavily-engaged assault forces demands a fast moving, durable platform capable of sustained fire.  Provided four LRM-10s across both Arms and side Torsos, the design carries four tons of ammunition in the Right- and Left Torsos rather than a single location.  Due to its speed, engineers have replaced the usual Flamer with a set of three ER-Small lasers in the Coyotl’s Arms and Center Torso to ensure its safety when the ammunition bins are emptied.

A mid-range skirmisher designed to take on the Pouncer-D during the Quicksilver Trials, its failure doomed the Coyotl to remain largely restricted to the Coyotes.  The carefully-metered heat burden, Steak missile launchers, and Jump Jets have kept the Configuration available to Warriors who prefer it to the Prime.

A dedicated Battlearmor transport, the Coyotl-I is the last slot open in the front-line Clusters for older Warriors nearing the end of their careers, assisting other units by moving Elemental support around the  battlefield.  The design is also intended to provide support against Inner Sphere guerrilla forces, racing to intercept them before they can disappear into the native population and eliminate them with the Arm-mounted laser batteries or illuminate more dangerous targets for artillery fire.
Also seen in second-line or garrison posts, the Coyotl-F is a favored duelist with older Warriors.  If resources are available, the unused TAG is exchanged for a lone ER-Medium laser.  Seen as one of the acceptable methods to prevent demotion to second-line or Solahma forces, each Cluster maintains at least a couple of these OmniMechs.

The first of the so-called ‘Garrison Configurations’ the –G operates in a support role, using its Narc missile beacon to increase the accuracy of friendly LRM support units while the Active Probe prevents enemy ECM from blocking the signal and allows it to double as a scout.  A battery of ER-Medium lasers offers a flexible offensive punch, sustained by an extra four Heat Sinks, and a single ER-Small laser adds to its close-range firepower.  Its second line status is confirmed with the absence of a Targeting Computer.

Restricted to a lower tier of equipment, Coyotl pilots have experimented with the standard SRM launchers, recovered from one of the Clan’s Brian Caches along with the Coyotl.  Despite the limited ammunition supply, damage potential remains high, with the added benefit of the SRMs-crit seeking ability.  The Configuration was noticed after a Coyotl-H completely eliminated the Elemental half of a Star Adder Nova without serious damage.  The Configuration has since begun to spread through the Coyote second-line forces as word of mouth continues to spread the story of the Coyotl’s success.

Relegated to second-line forces, the –I is a dedicated AA fighter, using a pair of economical LB-2X as its primary weapons.  Rarely seen among front line forces which prefer either larger Autocannons or lasers, stockpiles of the weapon have been left unused for an extended period.  The lack of a dedicated Targeting Computer reduces its effectiveness somewhat, but as a second-line unit the expense proved too much for garrison.  The –I is also one of the few Clan units that uses a rear-mounted weapon, a concession to its primary purpose as an AA unit.
The extreme long-range of the LB Autocannons has gained the Coyotl-I some notoriety as a sniper, but the low damage potential has kept it solely among the second-line forces.

Following the Smoke Jaguar testing of their Mist Lynx –I, Coyote Scientists noted the Clan had no comparable unit modified exclusively for vacuum.  Untested in combat, the Coyotl-J uses an insulated liquid storage bay to fuel enough Jump Jets capable of crossing 210 meters under 1.0 G with standard atmospheric conditions.  Utilizing an ECM Suite to reduce its signature, it uses an Arm-mounted ER-Large laser with Targeting Computer to assist accuracy, while a pair of ER-Small lasers provide short-range firepower against armored Infantry.  A Torso-mounted LRM-5 fed by a single ton of ammunition provides long-ranged firepower.

Deployment
Initially issued to front-line Clusters and several Ristars in the Coyote Touman, the Coyotl’s mix of speed, heavy armor, and efficient configurations made it a strong contender in the Quicksilver Trials.  Performing well in the Trials and field testing against several Clans, its defeat by Clan Wolf’s Pouncer led to a majority of Coyotl pilots abandoning the design, relegating it to the second-line and Solahma Warriors.  A vocal minority, however, insisted on using the design as an example of Coyote superiority, accusing Clan Wolf of favoring their own design.
Denied a production line under the Quicksilver program, the Coyotl is likely to remain an exclusively Coyote possession.  For the time being, the Coyotl continues to emerge from Brian Caches and maintenance facilities across Coyote territory to serve the Clan once again, leading to hopes for a resurgence of the Clan.

The base unit was well designed - the configs, not so much.  With a finished unit on their hands, there was a great deal less to write about in terms of allies and such, that was refreshing.

*I think - finally - that the configs are right.  Cutting-and-pasting doesn't always mean I remember to go back and make sure everything is right.  Sucks not having a program, I may have to break down and put it on the box.

**Grr.  Typo.

***Last couple sentences in the -F needed correcting.

The Merchant Caste of Clan Diamond Shark, clever berks that they are, noticed, through deep analysis of the shipments of raw materials,
that the Coyotes were up to something involving new OmniMech production. What it was they weren't entirely certain until junior merchant
factor managed to overhear a conversation between two Coyote merchants that involved the renaissance of an ancient OmniMech. He
reported this information to his superiorss and they were able to deduce, the clever berks that they were, that the Coyotes were bringing back
the Coyotl.

This intrigued the Merchants and they set about researching if they had any of them left in stock. They did not, but they discovered that the
design specifications had been archived as their Clan had helped the Coyotes develop the very first OmniMech. Additionally, they found the
original tools and dyes used to build the Mech in a hidden cache on Strato Domingo. With permission from the Khan, they turned the design specs
over to the Scientists to see if they could develop new configurations for the Coyotl. Newly promoted Chief Scientist Malcolm Daimler was given
the task to bring Project Lycan to life.

The first task was bring the commnications, targeting systems and sensors up to current specs. This task was simple as the Sharks had sufficient stocks
of this gear from the slightly heavier Mongrel OmniMech available. Work then went to creating new variants for the Lycan. The new Prime Configuration
was based on the Mongrel Prime's weapon loadout with only diference being the replacement of the ER large laser with a large pulse laser
with all primary weapons being mounted in of the arms.

The Lycan A is the heavy hitting variant with a Gauss rifle as the main weapon. It is fed by a two-ton ammo bin and backed up by
ER medium and small lasers. This gives the Lycan a very heavy punch for a Mech its size. Consideration was given to mounting the
LB 20-X or the Ultra AC/20, but the design team felt that the ammo supply would be insufficient for combat in the Inner Sphere.
