Quicksilver Upgrades #11: Ice Ferret (Fenris) 45 tons
« on: January 28, 2018, 11:36:06 PM »

Moving onto the forty-five tonners we go back to the original OmniMechs of TRO3050 for the Ice Ferret (Fernis). Originally developed by the Ice Hellion Clan in the mid-30th century to offset the success of the Timber Wolf made by the Wolf Clan. The Hellions dubbed it the Wolf Hunter but unfortunately because of some poor weapon configurations it had a lackluster service record. Ironically the Wolves ultimately won control of production and renamed the war machine the Ice Ferret which was the only natural predator of the Ice Hellion. The Wolves also altered the configurations and markedly improved its performance much to the ire of the Hellions.

By the dawn of the 31st century efforts began by the Nova Cat Clan to replace the Ice Ferret which led to the development of the Shadow Cat. By the start of the Operation Revival: Placement Trials only the Wolves really rely on the design while Ghost Bear, Goliath Scorpion, and Hell’s Horses use this 40-ton OmniMech exclusively and not the newer Shadow Cat. Most Clans (9 - Burrock, Coyote, Diamond Shark, Ice Hellion, Jade Falcon, Nova Cat, Smoke Jaguar, Snow Raven, Steel Viper) use both designs at this time. Only three (Cloud Cobra,    Fire Mandrill, Star Adder) use only the Shadow Cat in their Touman while Blood Spirit uses neither.

The forty-five-ton OmniMech field got even more crowded with the development of the Mongrel (Grendel) in the early 3050s with prototypes of that design being rushed into service at Tukayyid. The Quicksilver Trials would have a profound effect on Medium OmniMechs eliminating the Phantom from the Wolf production while the Ice Ferret (now aka the Fenris) defeated the Mongrel for the 45-ton Werewolf spot. This was followed by the infamous Sand Devil Incident during the 7th Quicksilver Trial when Goliath Scorpion unsuccessful attempted to secure the Ice Ferret chassis for its own design.

The Scorpions deal with the Ice Hellions for the Wolf Hunter specs violated the Wolves production rights and the appearance of the Sand Devil at the 45-ton Zombie OmniMech challenge provoked a series of grievances. Wolf rage only abated after the Diamond Sharks stepped in, and worked out a compromise winning the day for the capable Sand Devil. Since that time the Clans established preferences for each of these forty-five-ton designs. Wolf and Ice Hellion continued to be the main users of the design with Ghost Bear and Snow Raven looking to increase their share of production. Hell’s Horses, Coyote, Steel Viper, and Jade Falcon remain indifferent really but have only expressed desires for the Ice Ferret since Quicksilver.

So please discuss what you like about the existing configurations (would you keep them as is Quicksilver fluff will give you half a point now) and introduce your alternatives. Please explain why yours is best, what role it plays with your modifications, etc. Remember I love fluff. Again, you are not allowed to alter the base design itself but the configurations are opened game. Clan Level 2 is the tech level for this contest just after Tukayyid so no ATMs, AP Gauss, Heavy Lasers, or Light Active Probes! Teamwork is also very welcomed so if you have an idea it is acceptable to collaborate. Since multiple configurations can win whoever gets the most wins, wins! Bonus point to the new Quicksilver fluff!

Ahh the Fenris, a Mech that has a superior IS name to its Clan one and a Mech i'm not really a fan of as I see it as basically being superfluous as the Clans had the Dragonfly to do the scouting role. the design gets the ball rolling with two fixed heatsinks.  Which reduces it to a pathetic 9.5 tons of pod space.

I'm a bit dissapointed we can't remove those two heatsinks as that would give us something to work with, otherwise this 45 ton speedster has lots of room to carry basically nothing and I would press for the fixed heatsinks to be removed because otherwise we've got less weight to use than most light mechs and run the risk of very samey configs and I press Chief Scientist Takiro for these heatsinks to be removed.

Speaking of configs.

The Scientists who came up with the Revival era configs need to be flogged, flayed and then shot. And then genetically reaved.  The Prime's PPC is very nice and combine that with its speed and you get a perfect scout hunter.  But lets give it a pulse laser instead, so it can run and gun down a hostile scout.  In general the B is the 'best' of the configs as its good at all ranges, and the D is a mean backstabber, but both are still hobbled by those two pointless extra heatsinks.  This thing is near impossible to overheat, sure its not as bad as a Gargoyle or Executioner prime in that regard (which could be dunked in lava whilst alpha striking and they would still flash freeze the lava) but still!

One moment whilst I look at A and C configs.

*INCOHERENT SCREAMING AND REPEATING THE WORD "WHY!"*

Right! Got that out of my system!

The Fenris needs to slow the hell down, drop it to 7/11 and you could make something like the AMAZING Mongrel Grendel, but instead we're stuck with this turd.  *rolls up sleeves and fires up Mega Mek* Lets see how much we can polish it.

http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,45565.0.html

Folks might find that interesting too.  I wrote it a while back.

Also i'm gonna count the Perks as working.  The Fenris has the Improved Sensors quirk which = having an Active probe.

I'm out of this one. 9.5 tons is not worth the effort as I would be submitting the same garbage I would have for the Dragonfly, Hankyu and Fire Falcon. See you in the next go round. I don't know what we have left for Mediums, but I probably won't even bother until the Stormcrow or Nova show up.

Well I haven't seen a scientist revolt like this since the Society rose up against the Clans all those years ago...and what is surprising to me is the configurations used to be worse when Ice Hellion originally created the Mech. Wonder what that would have looked like?

Not to make you angrier marauder648 but the Ice Ferret (Fenris) prevails against the Mongrel (Grendel) in the Quicksilver Trials. Discussion and my decision can be found in the link below....

https://www.ourbattletech.com/forum/index.php?topic=2647.msg35994#msg35994

I'm not saying the Ice Ferret (Fenris) defeated the Mongrel (Grendel) in combat but rather on the industrial level. The Mongrel (Grendel) would have just been scheduled to enter production as the Quicksilver Trials kicked off where as the Ice Ferret is much more common at the time and already in full production. Plus you have to look at the backers of the design - the Wolves versus the Diamond Sharks. I could very much see the Sharks, who even in my setting are still dealing with the effects of Tukayyid, deciding to throw the contest in favor of easier prey.

Kinda in a rush again this morning but I will take a look at what you wrote on the main forum today.

I know the two heat sinks are a pain in the balls but then I'd have to let every design such as the Mist Lynx (Koshi) drop its fixed equipment.

And besides one day I am sure a design will replace the Ice Ferret altogether. ;)

*grumblesnorts*

Well the Grendel is a greatly superior machine to the Ice Box, but I can't really argue with the lore decision as it DOES make sense.  Instead of switching over production etc just faff around with the configs.  What you loose in eventual capability once the Grendel is produced, you gain in the short term with the Ice Turds new configs until something comes along to replace it and the Ice Ferret is finally fired into a sun.

Still those two fixed freezers need to go.  As Abele said, we're just reproducing the earlier designs.  With them the Ice Turd has less pod space than a Fire Falcon and its a case of ER mediums, or ER smalls.

Does this mean that the Gargoyle will come with 16 heatsinks, same with the Executioner etc.

But I still insist that the heatsinks be removed, they are hugely limiting on so small a machine that's forcing limitations on you with its engine as is.  Removing them just gives us more flexibility and will make the designs more varied than different flavours of ER laser configs and one with at least some SRM's.

Hmm.

I don't know.  Of course you see a lot of the same answers for the same questions, but those fixed heatsinks are an attempt to distinguish it.

I'd say, allow the removal but put it behind any entry that doesn't.  What the heck, canon might win simply because its a better fit.

Its a 45 ton machine that runs as fast as a Locust, its distinct enough without being able to be used to cool that atmosphere of Venus :P

Quicksilver – Fenris.

At the launch of the Quicksilver Programme the Ice Ferret was quite a common sight amongst the Invader Clans but like many of the Pre-REVIVAL configuration sets, it was failing to keep abreast with the realities that faced the Clans after Tukkayid.  The Ice Ferret was built and designed for Clan Warfare and the Clans initial perception of what the Inner Sphere would be like, and in many regards, it performed well, especially if given the room it needed to control an engagement.

But thanks to the self-reflection brought about after the defeat at Tukkayid, and the launch of the Quicksilver programme the flaws in the Ice Ferret were chosen to be corrected rather than delay production and interrupt the already tenuous supply chain to the Inner Sphere with cancelling production to instead produce the arguably quite superior Grendel.
Producing the Grendel would have resulted in a six to eight month halt in production as the factories were converted over and re-tooled and this was seen as far too long a delay.

Unfortunately, the two heatsinks that were part of the Ice Ferret’s engine could not be removed quickly or easily and in the name of expediency they were retained to again avoid disrupting production as the Clans needed all the Mechs they could get their hands on, and re-designing the engine fittings and hull shape would have caused a ‘hit’ in production levels.  These fixed heatsinks would also be one of the reasons that the Ice Ferret was also retired and replaced by a more modern Mech.  One quirk of the Quicksilver was the adoption of the Fenris name to differentiate the Quicksliver variant from the standard one, some Warriors did grumble about this and of course the Hellions were incensed that their design would be renamed once again, but ruffled feathers aside this name change was still accepted.

Variants

Prime – A slight change to the weapons fit of the standard variant were part of the Quicksilver programme.  A somewhat more generalist design the Quicksilver Prime saw the removal of the very inefficient SSRM-2 and its replacement with a pair of ER Medium lasers.  A flamer was also added for anti-personnel defence.  The biggest change came with the replacement of the ER PPC with a large pulse laser.  This was still a hard-hitting weapon, but it sacrificed range and hitting power for greatly increased accuracy which would let the Quicksilver Prime be a more formidable scout hunter.  Warriors though could and often did chop and change between the Pulse laser and ER PPC based on personal preference.  The simple replacement of the missiles greatly increased the Mech’s firepower and increased the Mech’s battlefield endurance, allowing it to remain in the field as long as onboard supplies lasted.

A – Due to its limited pod space the standard A was grossly inefficient, the heavy autocannon could not damage hostile forces quick enough and pilots resented being forced to choose between ammo types or being viewed as little more than a fast AA gun.  To turn this supposed ‘sniper’ into a real one the A replaced the LB-2 and the defensive array with a pair of ER large lasers, one in each arm.  The defensive weaponry was reduced to an ER Small laser whilst an ECM suite was installed to fox hostile Artemis systems.  With its high ground speed, the A became a fast and hard hitting sniper.

B – Whilst the B config was popular, its mismatched missile systems and somewhat limited endurance and logistical supply was seen as an issue by the Scientists taking part in redesigning the Quicksilver B.  Oddly enough this variant was almost entirely designed by Clan Ice Hellion members, the original designers of the B config when it was first introduced.
The main change was to improve efficiency and reduce waste as every ton of cargo space aboard the WarShips and DropShips heading back and forth between the Homeworlds was now seen as vital.  The paired missiles were replaced with a Streak SRM-6 launcher whilst the ER Large laser was retained to allow the Mech to joust at long range and continue to fire at all engagement ranges.  An ER Medium and ER Small were also mounted in the same arm as the ER large, in a curious triangular mount around the Mech’s fist somewhat reminiscent of the Nova’s hand actuator and its laser array.

C – The standard C wasted too much tonnage on too many launchers, ammunition and support equipment, which reduced the weight of fire it could deliver.  This changed with the Quicksilver C which saw the LRM’s integrated into a pair of LRM-10 launchers, each with Artemis fire control and a ton of ammo apiece.  The defensive armament was a single ER small laser, although with the negligible arming range of Clan LRM’s this was not seen as a drawback as the missiles could be used at point blank if needed.  This variant was a joint effort between the Wolves and Hells Horses as both made extensive use of the C beforehand as a fast ‘artillery’ unit.

D – All Scientists present voiced their admiration for the Fenris D and it was agreed to retain this configuration, valued for its blistering mid to short range firepower which let it excel as a Scout hunter.  Concerns over the rising number of C3 systems employed by the Inner Sphere did see argument for the replacement of the AMS with an ECM, but the value of the AMS against common scout weapons, SRM and LRMs was seen as of more value and ensured the Mech had a longer life on an active battlefield.

(So basically the canon one)

E – A Clan Goliath Scorpion design the E like the D is built for close quarter knife fights, but caters to the Scorpions ‘School of Precision’ and their Dance of Scars.  A blistering array of 9 ER Medium lasers are supported by the sole ‘long range’ weapon of a Medium pulse laser whilst an Small pulse laser allows the Mech to engage infantry targets.  These are all linked into a targeting computer for maximum accuracy.  The Hellions also found this variant to their liking for its massive firepower at short range which suited that Clan’s take on Zellbringen.

F – Another close-range knife fighter the F was a Wolf design although it clearly has some Horse influence.  Some would question the large amount of ammunition carried but it would allow for greater endurance and flexibility.  At its heart the F is designed to hunt tanks and cripple them with repeated volleys from its pair of SRM-6’s.  With a massive 4-tons of ammo onboard the F can remain in the battle for a long time, or carry Inferno rounds for use against tanks and infantry forces.  A pair of ER Medium lasers and a single ER Small provide extra punch whilst the Mech still runs exceptionally cool, allowing it to take advantage of any fires caused by Inferno rounds.

– Designed by Clan Hells Horses the F is a heavy scout designed to fight its way out if needed.  Armed with a trio of ER medium lasers and a Streak SRM-4 the G does not lack for firepower whilst a Flamer can be used against infantry if needed.  The electronics suite is expanded to include a TAG, ECM and Probe after battlefield experience found that many Clan forces lacked for scouts or a ‘true’ scout due to EW assets being spread across variants instead of being concentrated on a single variant.  This was found to be more efficient and meant that a Warrior who was a superior scout would not have to worry about not having the right equipment at his or her hands when needed.  This variant was quickly adopted by the Wolves and then, albeit grudgingly by the Ghost Bears.

Deployment

These Configurations were quick to impliment and were disseminated to the Clans who helped with the redesign.  The standard Ice Ferret configurations were quickly supplimented save in those taken as salvage by other Clans who saw little need to change a design they only had a handful of at most although this didn't stop very similar or identical custom configurations from cropping up, most often with Ice Ferret or Fenris's taken as salvage by Clan Jade Falcon.

Hmm.  Looking at it, I have a little too much to do this week including physio assessments for work, so I think I'm going to pass on this one.

The growing variety of the late-60's or Jihad era might be more interesting.  I still think the Clans could use a dedicated null-signature system unit, with suitable Watch-oriented configs, especially after a pause like this.  I though the Mist Lynx would be a good choice, but if the Fenris turns bad perhaps Takiro might reconsider.

Good discussion gang, I'm sorry to hear about our two dropouts but I understand. Pretty busy week coming up with the Super Bowl and all.

Nice looking entries marauder648! Thanks for taking up the challenge, I know it is frustratingly restrictive when it comes to the Wolf Hunter / Ice Ferret / Fenris or whatever you call it.

Thinking about it more today it would have hurt the Wolves the most if this OmniMech did not survive too. They are easily its biggest user. I'll have to run the numbers later but no Clan would be hurt worse then them.

Red Pins you missed a couple of fun level 3 entries we had during the Quicksilver Trials which did feature a dedicated null-signature system. I am thinking of the Ice Ghost first and foremost. ;)

This will be an interesting TRO, then.  Which reminds me, how many total entries are there?

TRO 3050 Quicksilver Upgrades will have 33 OmniMechs and quite possibly more equipment.

Well, if you are using the Wolf Clan Sourcebook as a reference, the Wolves have ~800 'mechs listed in the book, and ~175 of them are Ice Ferrets (followed by ~150 Gargoyles, ~115 Pumas, and ~70 Timber Wolves as their next most common 'mechs).

Oddly enough (imo), I might end up with an entry for this one, depending on how the writing mood strikes me.

Great info Vition2, data mining was also very interesting on the Pouncer which I found only in one cluster in Delta Galaxy. The Phantom seems pretty common for a new design as well for the Wolves. I half expected to find it only in Delta like the Pouncer but it was all over the place.

I hope the mood strikes you bud. A single configuration with some fluff is good enough to enter the contest but please don't stop there. I look forward to seeing your entry and yours to Pins! :)
