OVERVIEW The UrbanKing is a unique variant of the Wolfs Dragoon's Annihilator Battlemech. Norris Knutson, was a member of Zeta Battalion before and during the 4th Succession War and piloted an Annihilator. After the horrific battles of Misery and Crossing, Norris was assigned to the Black Widow Battalion. He remained there for the next two decades, eventually becoming a senior NCO in the Black Widow Training Battalion. On numerous occasions he impressed Colonel Kerensky with the way he could move the lumbering Annihilator, in several instances he managed to sneak up on unsuspecting opponents and hit them from the rear. While the official goal of the Black Widows Training Battalion was to teach the Dragoon warriors to fight the Clans, Colonel Kerensky felt the unofficial goal was to teach them how to deal with the unexpected while not losing their cool. To that end, she would have regular meetings with her troops to discuss new tactics and ideas. During one of these sessions Norris suggested a radical new modification to his Annihilator. The design would replace the Kali Yama Class 10 Autocannons with massive Defiance Mech Hunter Autocannon/20s. While this would reduce the long-range-firepower it would turn the mech into a deadly close combat unit. After a little thought Colonel Kerensky approved the project. Norris oversaw the reconstruction of his mech, stripping it down and rebuilding it with four Class 20 Autocannons. While at the time the Black Widow's were not using much if any in the way of advanced technologies, Norris did manage to acquire ten Double Heat Sinks for the design. When asked where he got them from, he would simply say he found them on the other side of the mountain. The rebuilt Annihilator, now referred to as the UrbanKing, enter service in 3048, shortly before the start of the Clan invasion.
CAPABILITIES In order to construct the ANH-4H Annihilator or UrbanKing as it is more widely known all existing weaponry, heat sinks, and lower arm actuators first had to be removed. Ten Double Heat Sinks were fitted to the Nissan 200 Fusion Engine which was retained. However, because of this power plant’s relatively small size two Double Heat Sinks had to be placed in the side torsos of the ‘Mech. These modifications made way for the four massive Autocannon/20s originally built by Defiance Industries. These Defiance ‘Mech Hunters had been laying around in storage after various lostech refits made them obsolete. Purchased by the Dragoons at a bargain basement price they made their way onto this Annihilator. Their immense firepower at close quarters is what makes the UrbanKing such a feared opponent. Still a running Alpha Strike will overheat the new Double Heat Sinks causing automatic shutdown in just three turns with continuous fire. Fortunately for this BattleMech few adversaries if any can survive this repeated salvo which also effectively quiets critiques about it’s limited ammunition supply. Opponents who also think they can get behind this Annihilator with its slow speed are surprised to find that it can flip its arms over and engage rearward targets. Four additional tons of armor were added to increase its protection by twenty percent. This new plating was mounted forward to improve survivability against more formidable threats. Unfortunately, CASEs were beyond the abilities of technicians to add and as the weight and interior space were needed elsewhere they were not included in this refit. Still with a price tag of just over eight million C-bills the UrbanKing is deadly rival for any would be challenger.
DEPLOYMENT Among the terrain in the Dragoon's training area were a number of canyons and hills, areas with limited visibility where combat took place at close range. It was not uncommon for Norris to be assigned to hold off an enemy lance in these areas. Seeing the mech on it's own, the enemy force would charge towards Norris in an attempt to overwhelm him. Norris would typically target the largest mech and hit it with a salvo of four shots. In almost every case this would result in the destruction of the mech and cause the remaining mechs in the lance to scatter in panic. Another common tactic used by Norris involved instances when an enemy approached from the rear. He would flip both arms to the rear facing and unload a dual salvo of rounds. This was usually enough to destroy any targets, the few that were not destroyed in the first salvo would break off in search of a less dangerous target.
VARIANT With the introduction of Clan tech weapons by the Dragoons, Norris has been pressing to upgrade the UrbanKing. Among the suggested changes are the replacement of the standard autocannons with either Ultra or LB models, the addition of more armor and ammo and increasing the speed of the mech with the use of 300 rated XL engine. While these upgrades have not been introduced yet, Norris was begun referring to the upgraded model as the UrbanGod.
