Quicksilver Upgrades #19: Lupus (??) 60 tons
« on: June 01, 2018, 12:04:33 PM »

Quick pitch and curveball number two has a lot to do with our last challenge as this design eventually inspired the Mad Dog. The Lupus was a product of Clan Coyote and in 2857 it became the second OmniMech ever created. Earning its place among the Clans as a ‘solid contributor’ it was eventually eclipsed by the appearance in 2963 of the OmniMech which the InnerSphere knows best as the Vulture. Even after it was overtaken by this and other designs it continued to serve in second line formations before vanishing altogether from the field of battle.

Cached or used in limited numbers as a research platform for new weapon systems [see the Hellfire in canon] the Lupus sat until 3052. Elam Tchernovkov managed to convince his Clan to reactivate these war machines and their manufacturing lines in order to achieve ‘Total Modularity’ in the Coyote Touman. Despite bitter protestations by some Tchernovkov’s plan to restart production of these ancient OmniMechs bore fruit when the Quicksilver Program called forth every possible design. During the Tenth Trial the Lupus was ultimately defeated by the Iron Spider for the 60-ton Zombie OmniMech slot but its reintroduction ultimately helped strengthen the second line forces of the Clan.

The Coyotes were not alone in their interest in the Lupus either as their bitter foe Clan Star Adder used it as a basis to create their new Hellfury. Merging the proven chassis with a new highly rated extra light engine fashioned a fine new Werewolf (Speedster) OmniMech for the Clans during the Quicksilver Trials. This new fast Heavy element in their arsenal quickly went onto service in the Burrock, Wolf, Hell’s Horses, Ice Hellion, and Jade Falcon front line units. The prideful Coyote and a few less fortunate Clans (Blood Spirit and Goliath Scorpion) have refused to upgrade from Lupus using it instead to round out their forces.

Like the Coyotl, the Lupus has never before seen service in the InnerSphere and as a result lacks a secondary designation but I suppose anything is possible. Did an Explorer Corps team spot one or have some bandits had a run in with one in the Deep Periphery. Alternatively, a group of Dark Caste group might have one or two in service which drew somebody’s attention in an intelligence agency somewhere. Was one trotted out for scientific testing perhaps somewhere in the Occupation Zone? Granted it is unlikely but there may just be a name out there that a non-Clanner gave this thing along with a story to justify it. What do you guys think?

Please discuss what you like about the existing configurations (would you keep them as is?) and introduce your alternatives. Please explain why yours is best, what role it plays with your modifications, etc. Remember I love fluff. Again, you are not allowed to alter the base design itself but the configurations are opened game. Clan Level 2 is the tech level for this contest just after Tukayyid so no ATMs, AP Gauss, Heavy Lasers, or Light Active Probes! Teamwork is also very welcomed so if you have an idea it is acceptable to collaborate. Since multiple configurations can win whoever gets the most wins, wins! Bonus points for new Quicksilver overview and an InnerSphere designation!!

Lupus (Bogi)
Utilized in limited numbers in our Wolf PGC clusters during the Invasion, the Lupus serves as a dependable cheaper alternative for our second line forces than current second generation omnimechs that fulfil the same role. The Mad Dog from the Smoke Jaguars which still irks many of our warriors with its name and our heavier frontline Timber Wolf omnimech. Taking note of our warriors concerns over the years we have made small but noticeable changes to the commonly seen configurations of the past. A recent Clan Watch report has noted that the KungsArme have named the Lupus the “Bogi” after a translation error caused the word Bogey to become Bogi the old Norse word for bow.

With 50% more missiles than the old Primary configuration this new config can stay on the battlefield that much longer. Replacing the twin ER Medium Lasers for a single Large Laser with the downgrade from the LRM 20s to LRM 15s allows for the same damage output at long ranges.

Keeping with the minor improvements on the existing designs, Configuration A has just a few minor tweaks to improve its design. Removing one of its DHS and its Twin ER Medium Lasers. A Medium Pulse and Twin ER Smalls allows for more accurate firing and adds a third weapons bracket to increase its heat efficiency

Not commonly seen on previous configurations this configuration is outfitted with six Streak SRM 6 packs. Taking full advantage of the streak capabilities with only roughly 8 shots per launcher where ammo will not be wasted by missing targets. This configuration is perfect for defensive roles where it may be reloaded upon need.

A later configuration designed for bandit hunting and extended missions in the field. This Configuration is outfitted fully with Pulse Lasers, Twin Large and Mediums accompanied with a battery of four smalls for Armor and Infantry support. Allowing our greenest warriors accuracy equivalent to our best warriors this design can make up for the flaws in any warrior. Adding in three additional heat sinks to assist with its energy dependent weaponry.

Lupus Quicksilver IS Codename 'Baldur'

All but extinct save for a bare handful of Mech’s still in the bottom rung of PGCs the Lupus was given a new lease of life during the Quicksilver Trials and thanks to the persistence and political skill of the Coyote’s Khan Elam Tchernovkov.  Rebuilding his Clan following the brutal spate of fighting with Clan Snow Raven, Elam Tchernovkov pressed for a more efficient and capable force and the concept of ‘Total Modularity’ which simply meant that all his Clan’s Mech’s would be Omnis, regardless of what role they served.

With production restarting in 3052 the Lupus was not seen as front-line material despite its modular nature. This was mainly due to its age and ongoing issues with the myomers in its legs that wore out at a high rate, making the Mech a bit of a hangar queen.  If not shunned by the front-line Galaxies, it was politely ignored and rotated into second line and PGC units.  Here it would replace older IIC and ex SLDF refits.  The IICs were either stripped for their parts and fully recycled or traded to other Clans who lacked for resources like the Scorpions and Spirits.

The Coyotes also traded some of these Mechs to the Wolves who, like the Coyotes, immediately put the Mech into second line units.  It was these units that were encountered in a raid on Ramsau where a previously unknown heavy Mech was encountered defending the Wolf holdings.  First sighted by a FRR MechWarrior, she tagged it as a ‘Baldur’ during the fighting.  Although unable to salvage any of the ‘new’ Mechs, the BattleROM data gave the Inner Sphere its first look at a modern incarnation of one of the oldest OmniMechs.

Variants

Prime – Retaining its role as a fire support unit the Prime lacked the original versions jump jets but traded mobility for firepower and endurance.  An extra ton of ammunition was added, bringing the warload up to 2-tons per LRM-20 launcher whilst the ER medium lasers became a quartet, with two mounted in each arm for the broadest possible firing arcs.  Two extra heatsinks were also installed but a full alpha strike is not recommended as it can produce a brutal heat surge.

A – Designed as a jack of all trades the A is capable of leaping up to 150 meters and can use its speed and agility to bring its armament to bare.  Happier at medium to short ranges the Mech still has an ER large laser for long range firepower.  At shorter ranges a pair of Streak SRM-6 launchers and a pair of medium pulse lasers can engage targets and quickly tear through their armour.  Liked by PGC pilots due to the forgiving nature of its weapons the A also runs cooler than the Prime but can still overheat if pushed.

B – A pure Blood Spirit design the Lupus was very popular with the resource starved Spirits as it was cheap to produce and easy to maintain (save the legs).  Stripping out the jump jets the Spirits installed their favoured weapons, a pair of ER large lasers and a pair of LRM-15s.  Each launcher has a 2-ton ammo bin with a third ton of ammunition shared between the two launchers.  Three extra heatsinks allow the Mech to be mobile and use its ER lasers without any heat build up but alpha strikes will rapidly overwhelm the cooling system.

C – Developed by Clan Coyote the C was built to fight combined arms opponents.  Having clashed with the Hells Horses the Coyotes well knew the effectiveness of Mechs and infantry forces working in concert.  Using the huge torso pods the Mech featured an ER PPC for long range punches and an LB-10 autocannon for flexibility as the gun can engage ground and air targets.  At short ranges the C can butcher infantry forces and is armed with a pair of ER small lasers, two flamers and two small pulse lasers.  To hunt for targets an active probe lets the Mech seek out targets.  Unfortunately the C runs very hot as no additional cooling systems were fitted, but it can run and use its main weapons without any heat build up.

D – Built as a direct response to the lessons learned facing Clan Snow Raven the D is flexible and can engage both ground and air targets at long and short ranges.  To engage aircraft the D features an LB-5X autocannon In its shoulder, fed by a 2-ton ammo bin whilst a large pulse laser provides accurate and inexhaustible heavy firepower.  At short ranges the Mech can unleash a quartet of SRM-4s with the 4 launchers sharing 2-tons of ammunition between them.  Two extra tons of cooling help keep the D’s heat down, and only a full running alpha will cause any significant increase in the Mech’s heat.

Lupus ‘Gloria’ – Taken as a Bondsman during a Pre-Revival Trial, Warrior Gloria Smith proved herself to her Wolf Bondholder and had her Bondcord cut in the last days prior to REVIVAL.  As such she accompanied the Wolves to the Inner Sphere and took a Lupus in a Trial of Possession two days prior to Tukkayid.  An ardent believer in the sanctity of Zellbrigen, she designed her Mech for dueling and her own personalized configuration showed this.  Armed with a massive ultra-20 class autocannon in the right torso, there wasn’t enough space to hold the ammunition so this had to be moved to the left torso and was fed round the back of the Mech to the cannons breech.  For long range work an ER large laser could be employed, but Gloria Smith preferred to use terrain and her Mechs jump-jets to close the range for her heavy cannon to eviscerate a target.  Unfortunately, Warrior Gloria Smith would die in the fighting on Tukkayid, falling in the fighting round the Pozoristu Mountains after claiming two ComGuard Assault Mechs in the brutal fighting. Her Mech was later recovered but was beyond repair and was scrapped after it was examined by ComStar.

Which is why I don't understand the goal of Clan Coyote.

Khan Cage smiled and said, "And that is how we shall be."

Are you speaking of 'Total Modularity'? Certainly second line forces would benefit from using OmniMechs as well. I could even argue that reconfiguring ur stuff is easier for defenders than attackers.

Overview:
The Inner Sphere's first look at the Lupus came from detachments used by Clan Wolf. Indications were that this was an older design being revived, so the AFFC gave it a codename matching those of other Clan heavy OmniMechs, 'Wotan', referencing it being a previous generation. (For those unfamiliar, Wotan is the germanic form of the scandinavian Odin).

Clan Coyote had gone back to their roots in order to replenish OmniMech numbers, pulling the remaining Lupus tooling out of storage and filling the gaps in order to begin building new chassis faster than an entirely new design could be. A considerable number of Lupus were still in storage and to develop the new configurations, the Coyotes worked with their oldest allies. Clan Wolf, in need of replacing losses against the ComGuards, were more than happy to put the old OmniMechs to work holding line as they rebuilt their forces.

Capabilities:
The Primary configuration of the Lupus stripped out the jump-jets of the original to free up five tons for additional ammunition and secondary weapons. Khan Natasha Kerensky modelled the configuration on the Wolf Dragoons' ARC-2W, something she was very familiar with. A pair of Streak SRM launchers gives the design more punch when it's forced to engage in close quarters battles and the extra ton of missiles increase endurance by a third.

Filling a more direct fire role, the Lupus A had depended on a laser array backed by an Ultra Autocannon. While this gave a formidable punch, Clan Wolf wanted more ability to exploit the holes made so they shifted to a pair of extended range large lasers to open holes in a target and a LB 10-X that could switch between battering open armour with standard rounds and then move to cluster rounds to finish off damaged opponents. This also provides anti-vehicle options.

The original Lupus B was an infighter and the new version continues that, but shifts the main gun to an Ultra-20 autocannon, backed by a mix of small and medium lasers. This secondary armament is scaled back to accomodate jumpjets. The B configuration runs warm on an alpha strike but the jumpjets are intended for use in hit and run operations that were much less of a factor for the Clans previously.

Just as the Lupus Prime mirrored the Wolf Dragoons' Archer variant, Khan Kerensky opted for another configuration that would mirror the Warhammer she'd piloted for most of her career. A PPC in each arm of the Lupus C provides enormous killing power and the torso has two anti-infantry mounts, pairing machineguns and bolstering them with small lasers. The SRM provides additional firepower for use against vehicles.

Another payload mirroring an Inner Sphere design, in this case the Rifleman, the Lupus D fills another role little used among the Clans except during Trials of Bloodright in those Houses with multiple phenotypes. This configuration mounts a pair of LB 5-X autocannon and two LRM launchers for air defense fire. While effective in this role, Wolf mechwarriors have also found it very capable of crippling vehicles.

The Lupus E adopts a pattern not unlike some Nova and Stormcrow configurations with six medium lasers in one arm. The torso contains enough heatsinks to make this sustainable and balancing them in the left arm is a set of SRM launchers for withering point-blank salvos. Fed by two tons of ammunition, these launchers are ideal for crippling vehicles or finishing off damaged 'Mechs.

For sniping operations the Lupus is equipped with paired lasers in each arm tied into a targeting computer. The F configuration also uses jump-jets to allow it to reach vantage points. While underarmed it does meet another useful
criteria: it isn't dependent on ammunition.

In G-configuration, the Lupus has a simple arrangement of weapons: an extended range PPC in one arm and a Gauss Rifle in the other. While this has no more direct fire from the main guns than Natasha Kerensky's preferred Lupus C, it runs cooler which is important in many environments and the design uses NARC beacons to let it mark enemies for missile fire from its Star Mates. This unclanlike configuration has seen little use outside Clan Wolf where it was deployed alongside refitted Inner Sphere missile units in garrison units, since NARC compatible ammunition is a very easy upgrade and zellbrigen is of minimal concern.

Been a few days and I just wanted to refresh this thread. I was also thinking about closing it early given Ice Hellion and Abele are passing. Any objections??

I made objections.
I didn't say I wouldn't submit anything.

I've given a lot of thought to Clan Wolf today which was spurred on by the Lupus. First I want to write up a plausible explanation for the lack of homeworld units that the Clan seemed to have in canon. Second some notes on how Quicksilver has effected the Clan. I might post some direct thoughts on the Lupus later but I don't want to give an advantage to any participant. Hope you enjoy!

Wolf’s Trap
The Wolf Touman had been battered by years of repeated Crusader assaults prior to the discovery of the Clan Homeworlds by the Outbound Light. Forcing the Wolves to participate in the invasion stretched their limited defenses to the breaking point or so many thought. To counter this weakness Ulric Kerensky devised an elaborate gambit which counted on his Clan’s legacy and reputation to prevent any potential feeding frenzy. Breaking down his remaining PGCs into ‘third line’ forces like Solahma Clusters who had ‘tested down’ or Training Clusters whose personnel had not yet ‘tested’ for line service gave the impression that numerous Wolf possessions were indeed undefended. The Clans in most cases did not even list these ‘forces’ among their assets and they were often poorly equipped.
While this perception did indeed bring challenges from Home Clans and a few Invaders they often were shocked by the strength of Wolf defenders. Aggressors seeking easy glory often found themselves humbled by mere solahma units which had its own consequences. It did not matter that these wily veterans and select ristars were better armed than their Clan counterparts. Excuses like that by the defeated only fueled the fire amid a society that deplores such stunning reversals. These would be attackers now viewed as weak themselves were attacked in turn by others in the Homeworlds. Soon no one wished to test the Wolves lest they lose and invite more reprisals by other Clans. This guile effectively deterred assailants while the rest of the Clan was occupied with the InnerSphere.

Reorganization and Expansion
Operation Restoration enabled the Wolves to change their posture almost entirely in the InnerSphere and in the Kerensky Cluster. Khan Natasha Kerensky, saKhan Phelan Ward and Loremaster George Kerensky were able to codify standard Wolf Galaxy strength at 4 Clusters plus a command trinary. Golden Keshik returned to Alpha Galaxy thanks to the establishment of Obsidian Keshik which will serve as the full-time guardians of the ilKhan bringing them back up to full strength. saKhan Ward received permission to reassemble the 1st Wolf Guards which he dubbed the Wolf Hounds. Using his friends and the best available personnel which include InnerSphere bondsman to staff this unit they are unorthodox to say the least. Both Alpha and Beta Galaxies have also been made faster (6/9) by the Khans who wish to maximize their speed in order to achieve victory. The three Assault Clusters of these Galaxies have developed into a home for slower war machines (5/8) like the Timber Wolf and Dire Wolf.
Meanwhile Loremaster George Kerensky took personal command of the Homeworld possessions and soon reshaped them along traditional Clan norms. In line with force requirements for the new operational plan Gamma Galaxy was redeployed to the Homeworlds bolstering their defenses. Joining them was Epsilon Galaxy which itself was often confused for Sigma Galaxy. These formations formalized their redefined position as Garrison Clusters between front line and second line units. Using older, often Zombie, OmniMechs and high end second line BattleMechs which were equipped with XL Engines these forces could augment either offensive or defensive operations depending entirely upon need. These Garrison Clusters also have the majority of new OmniVehicles to further enhance their performance. Along with the Wolves abundance of Elementals thanks to their Clan inventing the combat suits these formations are very formidable.
Additionally, the Loremaster was able to use surplus equipment and qualified warriors to reorganize Kappa Galaxy and form Xi. While still stretched thin across the Homeworlds the Wolves are now able to launch their own reprisals which previously they were unable to do. Solahma Clusters like the 31st commanded by Conal Ward remain unlisted and have been tasked with bandit hunting in the Periphery. Adding to these third line forces are a few Watch Clusters assembled by order of the Khans. Tasked with certain special operations these irregular troops are the first of their kind among the Clans and it remains to be seen what role they will play among the Children of Kerensky.
