Quicksilver Upgrades #24: Summoner (Thor) 70 tons

The Summoner was created in 2872 by Clan Jade Falcon just nine years after winning Omni technology from Clan Coyote. This second generation OmniMech used the Thresher BattleMech (itself created in 2849) as its basis. Perhaps this was a precursor to Quicksilver’s modularization of existing BattleMechs which began with the Falcon’s upgrade of the Locust IIC into the Sparrow. For one hundred and seventy-five years the Summoner’s mix of speed, mobility, armor, and firepower earned it a reputation as a highly effective and reliable war machine. Both the Jade Falcons and the Hell’s Horses manufactured this venerable design when the Outbound Light discovered the Clan Homeworlds.

The Summoner had become perhaps the second most popular Heavy OmniMech by the time of the Revival Trials eclipsed only by the Mad Dog. It had spread to every single Clan from the Snow Raven (11%) and Wolves (11%) who possessed the least to the Fire Mandrills (39%) which composed a large chunk of their frontline Heavy touman. Diamond Shark (33%) and Nova Cat (33%) owned the next largest percentage with Cloud Cobra (30.5%), Goliath Scorpion (30.5%), and Jade Falcon (30.5%) following. A quarter of all Ghost Bear (25%) and Ice Hellion (25%) heavy line forces use the Summoner while Burrock (22%) and Coyote (22%) have slightly less. Other Clans like Smoke Jaguar (16.5%) and Star Adder (16.5%) as well as Blood Spirit (14%), Hell’s Horses (14%) and Steel Viper (14%) featured this OmniMech.

During the initial stages of the invasion this Clan design was designated as the Thor by AFFC forces for its simple but powerful arsenal. The Quicksilver Program merely confirmed its place among the Touman of the Clans as the 70-ton Werewolf (Speedster). Jade Falcon managed to retain primary manufacturing rights even though Hell’s Horses contested it. While defeated the Horses retained secondary rights to the design even though they are the primary producer of the 70-ton Zombie Crazy Horse as well as securing production share in the new 70-ton Vampire Hellcat. Fire Mandrill still relies on the Summoner heavily as well as Cloud Cobra and Goliath Scorpion. Ice Hellion, Burrock, and Smoke Jaguar also retained their preference for the Summoner over the other newer designs.

Please discuss what you like about the existing configurations (would you keep them as is Quicksilver fluff will give you half a point now) and introduce your alternatives. Please explain why yours is best, what role it plays with your modifications, etc. Remember I love fluff. Again, you are not allowed to alter the base design itself but the configurations are opened game. Clan Level 2 is the tech level for this contest just after Tukayyid so no ATMs, AP Gauss, Heavy Lasers, or Light Active Probes! Teamwork is also very welcomed so if you have an idea it is acceptable to collaborate. Since multiple configurations can win whoever gets the most wins, wins! A bonus point to the best new Quicksilver fluff!

Quicksilver Summoner

Although one of the most common Mech’s in Clan service, in truth the years had not been kind to the Summoner.  Whilst it was very capable in the crystalized and codified world of Clan Trials, its limited endurance and large quantity of fixed equipment as well as a lack of weight saving material left the Summoner behind compared to the new Mechs being designed by the Clans, and had hamstrung its uses in major battles in the Inner Sphere.  During the tumult of Tukkayid, several Bear and Falcon units making use of Summoner Primes had been reduced to just using their PPC’s after a few short minutes of battle due to them running out of ammunition and the 70 ton Mech was then as capable as a Mech half its weight. 

Still it would be utterly impossible to decommission the Summoner for its faults, there were thousands of them in service across all the Clans and, save the Mad Dog, it was the most common Mech in Clan service.  The sheer number of Mech’s meant that the Summoner could not be missed from the Quicksilver Programme and Scientists from multiple Clans began scouring BattleROM’s as well as interviewing Warriors for input and data.

Clan Jade Falcon, a highly prolific user of the Summoner even went as far as to assign a Star of Warriors to the Scientists to allow them to test various configurations in simulators and real world tests.

The Mech’s somewhat extensive (even excessive) cooling system and integral jump jets all gobbled up valuable tonnage but the chassis had considerable room for weapons and weapon placement and the largely exposed layout of the Mech’s internal workings meant that alterations and changes could be made very quickly which greatly sped up the Quicksilver teams design process.

Variants

Prime – The effectiveness of the paired Particle cannon and LB-10 pattern cannon couldn’t be underestimated, but the cannons limited ammunition bin meant it ran dry far too quickly and the range of the PPC made the LRM-15 seem almost superfluous.  And it was this that was removed.  The Scientists had reviewed BattleROM’s from across the Occupation Zones and one custom config stuck out.  The M of Star Colonel Nikolai Malthus.  This lacked the LRM-15 but instead fitted a Streak-6, an efficient and potent weapon that still outranged Inner Sphere equivalents.  It was decided to fit this instead of the LRM-15, and its ton of ammunition was deemed more than adequate.  An extra ton of Autocannon ammunition was fitted and an ER Small laser was mounted in the chest.  Still dangerous and hard hitting at all ranges, the Quicksilver Prime could engage enemies for longer, hopefully burying the spectre of Tukkayid.

A - Designed for long range combat the A’s armament was stripped out save for the Gauss rifle although the heavy cannon received an extra ton of ammo to greatly increase the utility of this weapon by keeping it firing for longer.  Instead of the Large pulse laser and SRM-6 a pair of ER large lasers were installed in the right arm giving the Mech ample long range firepower when paired with the Gauss Rifle.  Less a skirmisher and more a sniper, the Quicksilver A was also cheap to produce and put less strain on a units logistics tail.

B – Swapping position with the C, the B was built for close quarter brawling. The ER large laser was removed as the weapons range was seen as unnecessary on a Mech who’s role was to get close.  It was replaced with a Large pulse laser which still heavily outranged many Inner Sphere weapons.  At shorter ranges a pair of ER Medium lasers could also be brought to bear, and for anti-infantry defence a flamer was mounted in the chest.  The Mech’s big cannon, an Ultra-20 pattern autocannon would be fed by a 2-ton ammunition bin but some warriors would remove an ER medium laser and fit extra ammo if a longer battle was expected.

C - Now the missile support variant the C featured a pair of LRM-20 missile launchers but instead of the original B’s NARC Pod, a system that was seen as more defensive than offensive, the launchers now featured Artemis IV fire control and 3 tons of ammunition per missile launcher, giving the Mech the same weight of fire, but now it was more accurate and far more sustained than almost any other Clan Mech in service and would allow Summoner C’s to remain in the battle for far longer.  Emphasising this was the installation of a shoulder mounted ER large laser for long range direct firepower and some ammunition independence, whilst an ER small laser sits almost unnoticed in the chest.  The endurance of the Quicksilver C was popular with test pilots and came as a deeply unpleasant surprise to Inner Sphere forces who had to endure repeated barrages of LRM's from the fast and agile Mech.

D
- The D variant was seen as successful, its combination of energy weapons and a targeting computer made it a fearsome opponent but many Warriors felt that it could be improved and that too much weight was taken up by what they saw as superfluious systems and equipment.
Retaining the ER large and Medium lasers and the targeting computer, all extra equipment was stripped out.  In its place a pair of Medium pulse lasers and small pulse lasers added to the firepower the Mech could use whilst an ECM was also installed in the chest.  Additional anti-infantry firepower came from its flamer.  Unfortunately it didn’t run as cool as the original D variant but the Quicksilver D had far greater firepower as well as no ammunition constraints making it a fearsome raider and skirmisher that could also maul infantry forces it came across.

E - The E variant is heavily based on the Prime but is more focused on anti-infantry work.  For long range firepower the Mech has an ER large laser whilst it also retains the LB-10 cannon as this can engage Mechs or vehicles with equal ease.  At short ranges a battery of 6 ER small lasers can cause a surprising amount of damage whilst two small pulse lasers can shred infantry positions along with its flamer.   An active probe also lets the Mech hunt for targets and then quickly eliminate them.  Unlike many Mech’s that have an anti-infantry focus the E does not sacrifice its anti-Mech firepower and can hit very hard at short range.

F - Built to engage at medium to short ranges the F imposes a considerable logistics strain thanks to its choice of armament but testing found it could cripple armoured forces and maul Mechs.  Influenced by the Jaguars experiences on Tukkayid the F is designed to put the greatest amount of firepower into a target at short range in the shortest possible time.  To do this the F is armed with a quartet of Streak SRM-6's, two in each arm, with each launcher fed by its own independent ammunition supply.  Capable of firing 24 missiles per salvo this makes the accompanying pair of ER medium lasers on the left torso and ER large and small laser on the right seem almost like an afterthought but their presence is welcome for the ammunition independence they offer.

G - The rarest of variants but seen as a necessary evil the G is an answer to the use of artillery cannons and missiles against Clan forces.  Developed by Clan Hells Horses in conjunction with Clan Wolf the G is armed with an Arrow IV missile launcher with 4-tons of ammunition carried aboard, allowing the Mech to carry a wide range of ammunition types.  Further long range firepower is provided by an LRM-10 whilst a quartet of ER small lasers and a TAG laser designator round out the armament and let the Mech lase its own targets if needs be.  Although not popular, the G has proven to be a nightmare for Inner Sphere forces trying to counter battery fire thanks to the Mech’s speed and mobility, which make it very hard to pin down and engage.

H - Designed from the onset to be a jack of all trades the H is armed with a mix of weapons that mainly focus on long to mid-range combat. An LB-5 pattern autocannon with 2-tons of ammunition let the Mech easily engage hostile VTOL's or tanks with cluster shells whilst an Artemis IV enhanced LRM-15 with 2-tons of ammunition give the Mech additional long-range firepower alongside its ER large laser.  At medium range a battery of 3 ER Medium lasers can be brought to bare and the weapons layout did lead to it initially being tagged not as a Summoner but a Thunderbolt variant by some Inner Sphere Mech's targetting systems although this was quickly patched out.  Although flexible, its lack of focus makes the H a rather uncommon design.

I - The I or Independent variant is a kissing cousin of the D but trades its long range firepower for medium to short range barrage firepower.  Two large pulse lasers form its primary armament and a quartet of Medium pulse lasers fill out the rest of the weapons as well as a flamer for anti-infantry duties.  Although not the hardest hitting Mech, the pulse lasers make it a lethal threat to fast moving Mechs or vehicles that rely on speed for protection and this makes the I a fearsome scout hunter.  Three additional tons of heatsinks in no way counter the heat surge of a full alpha strike but with no ammunition onboard a Warrior can ride the I's heatscale a bit harder than they would with other Mechs.  The few times the I has been encountered by Inner Sphere forces it was often running down friendly scouting forces or dispatching Medium Mechs which could not outrun the I or outgun it before they were crippled or destroyed.

Deployment

Despite the Summoner's growing age, the Quicksilver retrofits stopped any slide into decrepitude and many Warriors approved of the new weapons configurations that for the most part echoed the original Summoner configurations but improved upon them, making the Mech more effective.  The new configurations also caught Inner Sphere forces by surprise and lead to several sharp and painful reverses and 'lessons' for any units raiding over the Truce line.  They thought they knew all the Summoner's tricks but it still had more than enough magic in it to catch its opponents off guard.

Jade Falcon leadership orginally was going to submit the Summoner as is to the ilKhan's Quicksilver Trials even though its the oldest design Omnimech in their touman it has shown its strengths throughout its lifespan. That is until the scientist team on Sudetan caught wind of the trials.

Vincent Mcpartland, who had taken the name Isambard after his bondcord was cut and he was inducted into the Jade Falcon scientist cast, was the lead engineer for Olivetti's Thunderbolt production prior to the capture of the planet. He was part of the Jade Falcon scientists with the project of updating the Olivetti production capabilities to clan standards when word reached the team of the contest. Already playing with potential configurations in their spare time the team submitted their proposals to Star Colonel Ravil Pryde who approved of the designs after being shown in a series of trials using warriors from the Falcon Guard the improvements in the new designs. Showcasing the battleroms to Khan Elias Crichell who approved of the last minute change to the Clans submission to the Trials who was convinced the showcasing of Inner Sphere bondsman improving on a Clan design might upstage the recent exploits of Phelen Kell of Clan Wolf and show the proper usage of stravags.

It is rumored that Clan Hell's Horse with the assistance of Diamond Shark were in the process of designing their own updated Summoner for the trials which they had codenamed Project Warlock. Their design is rumored to have updated the internal structure with an updated frame which utilized Endo Steel and removed the integrated Jump Jets. Unfortunately complications arose with their prototype and were not granted a time extension by the ilKhan. It is probable in the near future the Summoner's position as primary production design for the Clans may be challenged sometime in the near future if the two clans can work out their design issues.

Weapons & Equipment
Praised for its heat efficiency and rather simplistic weapon configurations. The design was perfect for clan styled fighting which is quick and structured. While the design did compare favorably in its engagements with Inner Sphere designs the issue that most arose was ammo capacity. Having two or more main weapons that were dependent upon limited ammo supplies caused issues in some of the longer drawn out battles that their Federated Commonwealth opponents used against them.

In the prime configuration the team removed the ammo dependent LBX Autocannon and replaced it with a Large Pulse Laser for its longer range, accuracy and its lack of ammo dependency. Maintaining the rest of its weaponry but upgrading the LRM to include an Artemis System and additional heat sinks to deal with the increase in energy based weapons.

Configuration A
Swapping out the Large Pulse Laser for an ER PPC the team liked the increased range capabilities of the weapon that paired well with the existing Gauss Cannon on the design. Keeping with the switch to less ammo dependent weaponry the team added a pair of ER Mediums backed by a single ER Small to deal with opponents that close the distance with this design. Increased ammo for the Gauss finishes the changes made to this configuration.

Configuration B
Straying from the intent of the original B configuration the team chose to create a long range sniper variant. Twin ER PPCs supported with  a targeting computer is able to pick apart most enemies at extreme ranges with its increased heat sinks its able to roam the battlefield for extended time for deadly effect. For those opponents that are able to get in close a Streak SRM 6 is able to exploit any weaknesses with the opponents armor. A single ER Small rounds out its armament for foes that at short ranges.

Configuration C
The new missile boat configuration downgrades the twin LRM 20s of the original B configuration to twin LRM15s adding an Artemis System to each launcher ensures that on average the same amount of missiles will strike their target. Removing the Short Range Missiles systems as again the team was looking looking to remove some ammo dependent systems, a twin battery of ER Large Lasers increases the time the design can stay on the battlefield while also increasing its damage at longer ranges.

Configuration D
While the original C configuration did its job and did it well ammo concerns again were raised as its primary weapon the massive Ultra AC20 could only fire for a limited time before it would be a worthless weight on the design. Removing the ER Large Laser as the team realized that the configuration was ideal for duels and urban combat where long range weaponry is unneeded. Downgrading the Streak SRM 6 to a 4 increase both its ammo capacity as well as allowing increased ammo for the UAC20. Backed by a trio of ER Mediums and single ER Small ideal weapons that back up its primary weapon systems.

Lazy? Me? Maybe a little bit, but I'm also exhausted. The city is doing some much needed work on infrastructure, but it jus happens to be right outside my window. This wouldn't be so bad if worked a normal schedule, but I'm a 3rd shifter working the graveyard so I have to sleep during the day. The construction makes it close to impossible to get a god day's sleep. I'll save the writing for my days off at the end of the weekend. It's so bad I almost fell asleep while walking to work last night

In all the jobs ive had in my life the one i worked a graveyard shifts was the worst. Add in construction outside my place might turn anyone postal. Hope it ends quickly for you

Yikes, the graveyard shift sucks Abele. I withdraw my lazy jab which was more in motivational jest anyways. I know when I am forced to work overnights through the winter my entire mental capacity diminishes. Get some rest and feel better.
