Quicksilver Upgrades #4: Kit Fox (Uller) 30 tons
« on: November 12, 2017, 11:15:26 PM »

Well this week we go back to a familiar design from TRO3050 that you guys undoubtedly recognize. The Kit Fox or Uller became the 30-ton Assailant or Vampire (design maximizing weapons loadout) OmniMech of the Clans during the Quicksilver Trials. Introduced in 2890 by Clan Cloud Cobra it remained the main thirty-ton OmniMech chassis for the Clans by the time of the Operation Revival Placement Trials. One hundred and sixty years into its military service only three Clans (Coyote, Diamond Shark, Smoke Jaguar) do not make use of the Kit Fox in their Touman. Goliath Scorpion makes only sparing use of it according to the Random Assignment Tables with only 8% of its light frontline forces are made up of the Uller.

Burrock and Star Adder (11% each) presumably have purchased the Kit Fox from their Cloud Cobra allies. At the next level (14% each) are the Ghost Bears, Ice Hellions and Wolves who either bought it from Snow Raven (Ghost Bear) or salvaged it in combat from Jade Falcon (Wolf). The auxiliary Invading Clans (Nova Cat 22% and Steel Viper = 19%) also make use of the Uller and must have obtained it in a like fashion. At 28% we have Blood Spirit, Cloud Cobra, and Fire Mandrill who are upstaged by Hell’s Horses and Jade Falcon at 30.5% each. Only Snow Raven who like Jade Falcon won production rights to the design made greater use of it in their Touman (44%).

After the Quicksilver Trials the Arctic Cheetah, which was already winning some of the 30 ton market share prior to the invasion, and the Gremlin took some of the Clans away from the Uller but not its creator. The Cloud Cobras won primary production rights over the Snow Ravens (who elected to halt its manufacture) and Jade Falcons (who pressed a secondary line into service for the venerable Uller). Even though it may have been eclipsed the Kit Fox still has its benefactors except for the Jaguars, Coyotes and Sharks. So your mission is to try and improve on this 3050 classic.

Please discuss what you like about the existing configurations (would you keep them as is?) and introduce your alternatives. Please explain why yours is best, what role it plays with your modifications, etc. Remember I love fluff. Again you are not allowed to alter the base design itself but the configurations are opened game. Clan Level 2 is the tech level for this contest just after Tukayyid so no ATMs, AP Gauss, Heavy Lasers, or Light Active Probes! Teamwork is also very welcomed so if you have an idea it is acceptable to collaborate. Since multiple configurations can win whoever gets the most wins, wins! Bonus points for new Quicksilver overview!!

Overview:
Backbone of Clan Jade Falcon's lighter OmniMech stars ever since they claimed
the design from the Cloud Cobras, the Kit Fox has spread to several other
Clans. In light of the lessons learned in the invasion and to better work with
the new Fire Falcon, the customary configurations have been subject to
intensive review.

Capabilities:
The Kit Fox's original Prime configuration was a well balanced design, capable
of fighting infantry and armour just as well as BattleMechs. However, that same
lack of focus kept it from excelling in any role. After careful thought,
Scientists concluded that reducing ammunition dependence and addressing the
heavily armoured 'Mechs common in Lyran use merited replacing the LB 5-X
autocannon with a large pulse laser and two additional heatsinks for the new
Primary configuration.

It's hard to improve upon the devastating firepower of the Kit Fox A's and
although designers played with alternate laser arrangements, the only change
for the Alpha is moving one laser to the torso, reflecting concerns that the
practise of mounting all weapons in the arms could leave a dis-armed Kit Fox
weaponless.

The Kit Fox B was often confused with the Prime but the ultra-autocannon lacked
the anti-aircraft and anti-vehicle utility of the other 'Mech while not quite
comparing to the firepower of the A. The Kit Fox Baker swaps in the LB 5-X
previously found on the Prime, and adds two additional missile launchers. While
it lacks a knock-out punch, the Baker has been effective against FedCom
skirmishing elements, posing a serious threat to the VTOLs, hovercraft and
light 'Mechs serving as a RCT's eyes and ears.

With the availability of the Fire Falcon as a scout, the Kit Fox C was no
longer needed as much. However, the anti-infantry role remained important and
some Star Commanders had found the configuration helpful in a command role. The
Charlie rebuilds this capacity with two additional machine-guns and redundant
anti-missile and electronic warfare systems. While some warriors scorn the
Charlie's pilots as 'mere technicians', older heads have learned the value of
not only wrapping their own Star in an electronic layer of protection but of
also subverting similar protections by crafty Inner Sphere warriors. The Kit
Fox Charlie has been flagged as a high priority target by FedCom commanders and
both Clan Snow Raven and Clan Cloud Cobra have begun using it to co-ordinate
precision airstrikes.

While the Kit Fox Delta sports five fewer LRM tubes than the older D
configuration, the addition of Artemis targeting is believed to offset this
loss in firepower. In addition, removing the NARC beacons it would have had to
close in to make use of not only frees the Delta to remain at long ranges to
deliver effective bombardment, it also left enough room for half again the
magazine-space and a laser that the 'Mech can defend itself with once the
magazines run dry.

One complication encountered during Operation Revival was that AFFS recon
lances of Phoenix Hawks, Stingers and Wasps could sometimes escape or outflank
the Kit Fox in rough terrain through use of their jump-jets. While the Fire
Falcon is less vulnerable than this, a Kit Fox configuration to address such
tactics was requested. Of all Clans, it was the Wolves who solved this
satisfactorially, by loading their small supply of Kit Foxes in a manner
reminiscent of the Phoenix Hawk, long the bench-mark of Inner Sphere medium
recon 'Mechs. During a raid on Seiduts, elements of the Thirteenth Wolf Guards
almost caused the Falcon's commander to froth at the mouth by using the
defender's signature 'Mech in a spheroid fashion. The Star Commander was later
removed from duty pending a full medical review.

Important question. Does MASC count as altering the base chassis or is it a poddable thing?

Yeah sorry Marauder, the MASC is not a modular (pod mounted) piece of equipment. Adding one would not be possible unfortunately.

Long the staple of Clan Jade Falcon's Eye Stars the Falcons leapt at the Quicksilver upgrade program, taking a lot of information from Warriors as well as BattleROM recordings to try and correct the flaws of the Kit Fox with as little delay to production as possible.

One problem that was noted again and again was the Kit Fox's lack of speed, with it being outrun by every other Light Mech in general use with the Clans or unable to gain on them.  And this was true of the wide number of designs faced in the Inner Sphere, it could either match their speed or they would be faster, giving them the chance to dictate the battle.  Initial designs added a MASC system, but this would have required extensive muscular alterations to the design and would slow production.  The programme would instead focus on firepower.

Prime.

Retaining the generalist feel of the pre-Quicksilver refits the Prime drops the LB-X autocannon and upgrades the Streak launcher to a 6-shooter.  The ER large laser is retained whilst the small pulse laser is upgraded to a medium pulse laser.  An ER small provides additional firepower at point blank range whilst an LRM-10 with Artemis allows the Kit Fox to engage at the longest of ranges.  An ECM was also added, the unpleasant introduction and rapidly spreading C3 system made disrupting it a priority.  To be effective a spotter would have to get in close and this could be countered with the firepower of the Mech as well as the ECM that was the same on the Hellbringer.   With a more potent long range punch and improved firepower at shorter ranges the Prime is still a jack of all trades, but less scatter-brained than the standard Kit Fox, and no longer quite so at the mercy of faster opponents.

A - Clan Hells Horses worked to refit the A, and whilst the temptation was there to retain the gauss rifle for its pure knockdown power, seeing the hordes of armoured vehicles often deployed by the Inner Sphere often made this weapon overkill and thus less efficient.  The big rifle also tended to make the under-armoured Kit Fox a priority target to eliminate the big gun before it could be used effectively.  Retaining the MASC system added by the Falcons, the Horses removed the gauss rifle and replaced it with an LB-10 autocannon and 2 tons of ammo.  A third medium laser was also added, giving the Kit Fox an increased punch at medium range.  Firing beehive rounds the LB-10 can disable larger tanks as well as provide an effective deterrent against air attack.  As infantry tended to accompany tanks, a pair of flamers were also included, although field refits often replaced these with a single small pulse laser.

B - Moving away (somewhat) from the 'big gun' approach of the original B, the Quicksilver-Bravo is more a skirmisher and harasser with an eye to engaging fast moving Mechs.  The primary armament is a large pulse laser, backed up by a pair of medium pulse lasers.  These provide potent saturation fire that can gut most light Mechs in a few heartbeats whilst allowing it to also threaten larger Mechs.  A pair of SRM-6's also give the Mech a potent barrage capacity whilst 2 tons of ammunition make for good battlefield endurance or allow a pilot to take different warheads.  The B also retains the ECM suite from the prime, letting it jam scouts its hunting.

C - Filling the dual role of scout and infantry hunter the C is also the first Kit Fox that could jump.  A full rack of jump jets allow it to leap up to 180 meters.  An extensive array of electronics are installed with an ECM, probe and TAG for the few times that artillery is deployed. For anti-Mech firepower the C is armed with a pair of ER Medium lasers and a single medium pulse laser.  Paired small pulse lasers and flamers give the Mech its anti-infantry punch and an AMS keeps it safe from hostile missile fire.  Finally an ER small laser was installed simply because the tonnage was available.  An extra ton of cooling was added as the C can run exceptionally hot if the pilot chooses to use all their weapons at once.

D - The original D could be politely described as series 'curious design choices'.  A missile support unit that had a heavy system that enhanced its missiles, but only if it got close.  The Quicksilver D eliminates the almost pointless NARC pod as well as the LRM-5 and its ammo.  The LRM-15's now benefit from an Artemis IV on each launcher and their endurance is increased with the addition of a 3rd ton of ammunition with 2 per launcher and the 3rd shared between the launchers.  Short range firepower was covered by a quartet of ER Small lasers that were suggested by a Clan Goliath Scorpion Scientist.

E - The newly developed E variant is based on the chassis of the C but instead of being a scout, the E is a sniper and in a way, echoes the standard A variant.  With a 180 meter jumping distance the E is highly mobile and this allows it to get into the best position to use its ER PPC.  For shorter ranges a pair of ER Medium lasers are installed, but what makes this variant so dangerous is the targetting computer linking its weapons together.  Three extra heatsinks are also installed but they are still not enough to contain the fearsome heat load of a jumping alpha strike.

Thoughts on the Kit Fox

The Kit Fox is one of those ones that made me narrow my eyes when I saw it.  This thing is a Hellbringer, lots of tonnage saved for weapons, but no armour to save its life. And with enough firepower to make it a threat that can be fairly easily removed.  Whilst in universe, speed = armour just as much as armour does.  In game terms, a slower Mech is easy to hit and even if its fairly nippy, and lets be honest, 96kph is quite fast, its not fast enough unless you're given clear terrain.

And this combination of low speed and weak armour makes the Kit Fox a liablility because its got enough firepower to be a threat, but its a threat that can be removed with moderate ease. One good hit and its in serious trouble.  What was needed was MASC in the least, or a re-working to make it 7/11 jumper.  This would cut down on its pod space but would then go into the speed = armour thing that might help it.  It also stops the Clans from having two light Mechs that both go 6/9.  I can understand it with the Puma, but the Kit Fox is just...not good.

The weapons mix is fair to middling. The Prime has a LOT of firepower but its all over the place with it being not really focused in one area, plus that AC eats up 8 tons with ammo which is a bad decision on a light.  And you loose the flexibility of the LB weapons as you have to choose between cluster or solid shot.  The A is a brute, and is fine really. But that Gauss will attract attention and all its going to take is a few solid hits and the Gauss will be as dead as the Mech carrying it.  The B is..okay, again its fine, its mid ranged but its got a hard slap.  Again, one that will attract undue attention as this is a 30 tonner that happily outguns a fair few heavies.

The C is..well its a mess.  5.5 tons on AMS and ammo. WAT!?  Sure it makes sense in the context of the rules of the time but bloody hell, its fucking useless today. Also its got the dead weight of a pair of A-Pods.  If your dual MGs and single SPL could not remove the threat that you have to use A-Pods I would assume the Fox is taking a walk through a veritable tidal wave of infantry.  The EW stuff is nice, sure the TAG makes no sense, as if you said "Hey lets use artillery!" to a Falcon commander prior to the Post Tukkayid/Great Refusal period you'd be punched in the throat.  The D...I don't like the D...WHY does it have a fecking NARC pod on it? Lets put a weapon system that has a criminally short range on a mech designed to sit back and hammer with LRMs.  And then there's another 2 pointless tons wasted on the LRM-5 that's there....because?  The Scientists who came up with this one need to be flogged flayed and then shot.

Basically, the Kit Fox, in my eyes, needs a complete re-working as only 2 configs at 3050 are anywhere approaching useful, with the Prime being a middling one, all be it one with ADD.

Just to follow on marauder's points about the Kit Fox. In some ways the Uller is the first true Vampire OmniMech of the Clan originals as it goes 6/9 (minimum speed for a light Mech at least in my opinion) and really maximize tons for pod space. Unfortunately since Quicksilver I really like to maximize armor protection where possible and this canon design doesn't do that. You probably could put another 1.5 tons on this guy if you were able to redesign it from the ground up. At least then you'd have a bit of survivability combined with above average weapons load out. At least nothing is fixed for equipment which I find limiting so you could add jump jets if you like for added maneuverability. A MASC would not be ideal here as it would cost 2 tons rather than 1 on a 25 ton frame but masterarminas made it work on his revision of the Dasher. Any way that is just my thoughts on the Uller. What are yours?

For more on the Kit Fox (Ulller) you can see the Mech of the Week Article on the main site (link below);

In all honesty the Kit Fox needs to be put down, and indeed the Falcons did with the Fire Falcon or the Hellions with the Hellion.  with medocre speed and limited surviability, combined with some strange weapon choices and fits, the Mech tends towards the dysfunctional end of the spectrum.  Its design choices are questionable and when added up together, the end result is a sub-par machine that tends to attract far too much attention with its firepower and is in no way, shape or form built to take what gets lobbed at it.  Re-jigging the weapons can only do so much (much as I fear we'll find with the Dragonfly), but really this thing needs a complete re-working to be something that is useful and not just PPC or gauss fodder.

The Fenris can be re-worked more than the dragonfly, you've got more tonnage to work with.

Oh and Takiro.  For the Puma, is the flamer/Tarcom a fixed item? Makes no sense that they are.

Fixed equipment is fixed my friend and can't be touched. The Masakari Targeting Computer can be toyed with by minimizing direct fire weaponry but those old Omnis can't be upgraded that much. Sorry.

Eventually we will be replacing those machines that are just too old.

Where are you getting that the Adder/Puma has a fixed Tarcom?  It only uses it in the PRIME and H configurations as far as I can tell in my TRO3050 (and the H isn't in existence yet as far as the Quicksilver Upgrades are concerned).

That's why I mentioned the Masakari with the fixed Targeting Computer because it is the only machine to have that to my knowledge. I'm sure marauder648 just made a simple mistake. No harm, no foul.
