Here is an idea I had for a long time (after seeing the latest Linebacker picture) and I took the time to put it down.
So here are the Slayers.
-
Depending on the people working on them, things can take a much different direction. For example, the introduction of the Dragon DRG-1N in 2745 did not bother the Star League Defence Forces, which were relying on its more specialised and advanced designs to deal with what the Houses could be throwing against them (and the Dragon for them was a left-over of the competition for a new Shadow Hawk).
However the Amaris Coup would change that. Unable to deploy as many BattleMechs as before and fearing the times to come, General Kerensky ordered different Hegemony companies to start designing new ‘Mechs that would become the first of a new generation aimed at “defeating everything thrown at usâ€.
One of the companies that received this order was General Systems on Caph, that was recovering from the fights on this world and were trying to bring their production lines of Exterminators back to their full output. From their difficulties with coping with such a “simple†task, the company understood that now was the time to build a lower tech ‘Mech that would later (once supply chains would be fully operational and more advanced components would become once more available) be upgraded to meet the usual Star League Defence Forces standards.
No one is sure why the engineers at General Systems decided to focus on the Dragon. Perhaps because of their closeness to 3 Houses had they selected the iconic ‘Mech that seemed the most dangerous to them or because it lied in the vicinity (in terms of weight) of their own Exterminator, giving them some expertise in this field. Whatever the reasons behind it, they decided to work on the Slayer.
The first prototype was running on the field grounds on the 8th of July 2784 and the design process went through its end with delays due to the different battles involving the Great Houses that took their toll on the engineering teams and on the production facilities. By the end of 2792, a small production line had already been dedicated to the production of the SYR-1 and high hopes were placed on this design by the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns that were under pressure of the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery as worlds after worlds were falling to House Kurita.
However only one production run of 24 Slayers were produced before General Systems was destroyed and never rebuilt and was quickly taken by the AFFS that sent them to various Robinson Chevaliers units that were in dire need of reinforcements.
Thanks to its simplicity, the SYR-1 Slayer responded well in the difficult conditions faced by the AFFS as they were trying to stop the Kurita juggernaut.
Its tonnage and speed matched those of the Dragon and it was slightly more armoured than the Kuritan Heavy ‘Mech, ensuring an increased survivability. However, where it shines was in terms of raw firepower and endurance. Its all energy weapons with 2 Large Lasers and 2 Medium ones made it less vulnerable than the Dragon or other designs to ammo explosions and allowed it to stay almost forever on the battlefield. Two points are of note: first, its capacity to fire its main weapons almost without heat problems thanks to its 16 Heat Sinks and second, its rather advanced targeting and communication systems as without access to anything else, General Systems put those of the Exterminator in the Slayer, giving it a slight edge over other models as the years passed.
At the end of the Second Succession Wars, only 12 Slayers survived as no blueprints had been safeguarded from General Systems. They were evenly split in the 3 Robinson Chevaliers surviving regiments. Another interesting feature due to the nature of the Robinson Chevaliers was that once a new ‘MechWarrior in a Slayer had destroyed a Dragon, he/she would christened his/her Slayer for a mythical weapon or slayer of monster.
Over the years, the number of Slayers slowly went down as no new ones were being produced. This changed at the beginning of the 3050s when the Clans returned with their advanced designs and when Luthien Armor Works released the Grand Dragon, a clear improvement over the classical Dragon.
Unwilling to let its “supremacy†slip away, the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth ordered (a bit like the Star League in its last days) to create new designs that would be able to tip the scales of the balance back in favour of the Federated Commonwealth.
General Motors decided to enter the “contest†with like General Systems, “a slayer for both beasts: the hydra of the Clans and the Dragonâ€. What no one knew was that General Motors had somehow found the original blueprints of the SYR-1 and would be able to be true to its words. This is how the SYR-2 Slayer came into being.
From outside, it just looked like the SYR-1 of old and a bit like the Linebacker later deployed by the Clans but from the inside, it was a totally new ‘Mech with no expenses spared to give the best ‘Mech possible to the AFFC.
Speed was increased to keep pace with the Grand Dragon and the more mobile ‘Mechs deployed by the Clans. This was only made possible through the use of a GM 360XL that the company developed and launched in record time (the only other option would have been to try to find an agreement with Kuritan companies for getting a regular access to the Hermes 360XL, something quite unlikely and that wouldn’t have suited the AFFC).
The internal structure was lightened thanks to the use of Endo-Steel and the armour was increased nearly to the maximum for a 60 tons ‘Mech with 11 tons of Ferro-Fibrous.
The weapons were also upgraded with first the use of systems in use by General Motors and with twin ER PPC replacing the Large Lasers, the twin Medium Lasers remaining where they had been for centuries and the addition of a Small Laser in the back to act as a deterrent against lesser threads like Elementals. To deal with the increased heat production, the 16 Single Heat Sinks were replaced by 16 Double Heat Sinks, making it possible once more for the Slayer to fire its main weapons without much concern about overheating.
By the end of 3052, the final prototype of the SYR-2 was given a go-ahead by the Department of the Quartermaster and a brand new production line was beginning to deliver the new incarnation of the Slayer to the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth.
Quickly after the first ‘Mechs were delivered to front-line units, the Department of the Army and Navy issued a specific regulations forbidding the “I am going to hunt some Heavy ‘Mechs†attitude of some ‘MechWarriors. Officially, this has nothing to do with the Slayer but is more a concern about the psychological boost given to the AFFC by the arrival of so many new BattleMechs. However, some officers have pointed out that this new regulation appeared right after some Slayers were given names of mythical weapons or beast slayers after their first victory over other Heavy ‘Mechs.

And you saw that only a few Slayer SYR-1 survived the first two Succession Wars or that the production lines are starting to run again with the SYR-2.
Since they are beginning christened in fire and battle, I let you the possibility if you want to write down one or several 'MechWarriors/'Mechs combo be they in the beginnings or when the production is resumed (even if Takiro agrees in his Salient Horizon universe).
Don't be afraid and let slip the dogs of war!

Wow, what a great concept Ice!
I love it, version one sort of reminds me of a lowtech Penetrator while version two is a whole nother creature.
Definitely calling dibs for Salient Horizons. Take a look at my Martial Accords post for further info. ;)

Like the fluff the One reminds me of Crab I like the Two version better

A heavier Crab is a good comparison as well.

Thanks.
Version 2 is far more advanced and better :P
I never thought of the Crab but it has a Crab feeling to it.

Only concern I have with the AFFC greenlighting such a SYR-2 upgrade is Robinson's unyeilding hatred of the Draconis Combine which it may foster. It is specifically geared against the Grand Dragon and I doubt Duke Sandoval wouldn't insist on having a few for the Robinson Rangers. Not to mention the concern which the ISF and O5P would have once they found out about it. Sure I see the new press that it is aimed at the Clans but we all know who its original enemy was. This could inflame tensions along the border which is something the Steiner-Davions go out of their way to prevent.
Did any of the SYR-1 Slayers survive the Succession Wars? Or did they go extinct like the Robinson Chevaliers did?
What was the latest Linebacker picture that you saw which inspired this little project??

To let all of you create a 'MechWarrior or two with the associated Slayer.

I didn't make my mind yet. If there any survivors, there will be really few of them but it is not impossible.

I might need to work on that part. Perhaps, shifting the research to before 3050? A pure anti Kuritan 'Mech that due to the advance of the Clans became an anti-Clan one with every unit produced sent to the real front where the "poor Lyran half of the realm is bleeding, left alone by the Davions"?

Came up with some rudimentary concepts today, what do you think?
1. Dragonslayer
2. Wyrmslayer
3. Farslayer kills from long range
4. Manslayer female Mechwarrior with quite a kill list
5. Swordslayer enemy of the Sword of Light
6. Kinslayer is a Draconian defector
7. Giantslayer is the killer of assault machines
8. Catslayer hunts down DCMS Panthers

For Giantslayer, the pilot must be named Gotrek Gurnisson.

Apparently a Warhammer reference, cool.
Is this the sort of thing you were looking for Ice? I know the Kinslayer is something we've used on an OmniMech but it fits. I was thinking it was a Draconian who served with the SLDF and recognizes Davion as the rightful First Lord. He'd obviously be viewed as a traitor by all loyal Kuritans and I wonder how much he'd be trusted by the Robinson folk??

Just add a name and a little more background and you've got it Takiro.

Will do when I get a chance Ice!
Who will be the MasterSlayer or Lord Slayer? Commander of the Slayer Brotherhood??

If this was Star Wars and talking about Storm Troopers it would be the MISlayer

Thanks. You don't have to do all of them. The idea was that people here could do one or more if they wanted.
I didn't think about a Lord Slayer... I need to think about it.
If this was Star Wars and talking about Storm Troopers it would be the MISlayer
The poor Stormtroopers. They deserve a better treatment... Wait only the clones are the real elite ones. The others are regular guys or girls with some training.
-
I didn't think about a Lord Slayer... I need to think about it.
Too bad the Brotherhoods are a bit later on, this would have been an idea.
-
Actually Mechwarrior Brotherhoods are first mentioned in the Terran Hegemony (see the old Star League Sourcebook) before this so those organizations do exist but they haven't grown monstrous yet. Matter of fact I contend that Federated Suns groups grew from their Terran forerunners. The Slayers could be a first example of this as they could have been born on Caph which was Terran and like believe that John Davion is the rightful First Lord and Regent of the Camerons.
Warrior Cabals formed in the Hegemony in the 2540s according to page 33-34 of the SLSB.
With the Slayers never exceeding two dozen members they would perhaps be notable but not a large Brotherhood.

Colonel James Braddock is a former Davion officer who spent seven years in a Draconis Combine POW camp, which he escaped 10 years ago. After the War of 3039, Braddock has made a name for himself as a mercenary for hire in actions against his former foe. Gathering a group of like minded former AFFS military members, Braddock and company have proven a thorn in the side of the Dragons and former allies alike as the two sides attempt to have peaceful relations as they concentrate on the Clan Invasion.
Piloting his modified Ostroc which he has named Wyrmslayer, Braddock has taken the design that already excelled as an urban combatant and improved upon it. With the replacement of the twin Large Lasers for the single PPC the design has lessened its overall damage at range but increased its ability to single shot a 'Mech at range and damage internal structures especially lower tonnage designs or shots that locate the Head. Maintaining the SRM-4 and Twin Medium Lasers the design has added the Hatchet that was unveiled in the 4th SW on the Hatchetman. Adding it has proven a deadly combination to the 'Mechs arsenal. In Braddock patented maneuver he dubs "Burying the Hatchet" Braddock jumps down from higher elevations striking his opponents with the Hatchet into designs sometimes cutting the 'Mechs literally in half.
Braddock's Company was blacklisted by the newly formed MRBC for its recent actions along the Draconis Combine border with the periphery involving the destruction of a power plant that cost the lives of nearly 10k citizens on planet.

Need or want fluff let me know
I think that is what Ice Hellion had in mind from the beginning Bradshaw. Basically create 1 or more of the 24 Slayer (which he designed in the first post) with their Mechwarriors.

I first thought that the Wyrm was the one being slew and I thought why go for a heavier frame? Than I looked back at it and saw the Wyrm was no BattleMech but the Wyvern was one.
And yes, I would like some fluff. We will field a full unit of Dragonslayers :P

Very little is know about the pilot/'Mech known as the Manslayer, the 'Mech has appeared on over 40 worlds and in all of the major realms of the Inner Sphere over the last 10 years. Only recently has the Firestarter that the pilot has been using been upgraded with Lostech. Its been harder for us to confirm supposed sightings in the periphery realms. It took a long time for our sources to figure out the MO or modus operandi for the pilot. Its been confirmed that at least 30 of the raids were on underground trafficking sites of sex slaves details are still sketchy on some due to believed local interference in our investigations. The psych profile that has been written up is that its believed that the pilot either was a victim themselves or had a close family member or friend that was. Whether they are searching for someone specific or just going to where ever they discover locations at. Even how they are gaining on these sites is a mystery as local and regional security forces have not known of these sites until after cleaning up the mess. Whomever this person is locals have yet to file any charges upon them though there are rewards being issued for information as vigilante justice is not approved in any planetary system. If you have information please contact your local Comstar representatives or message us at crimestoppers@comstar.com
Does this sound better
Very little is know about the pilot/'Mech known as the Manslayer, the 'Mech to date has appeared on over 40 worlds and in all of the major realms of the Inner Sphere over the last 10 years. Only recently has the Firestarter that the pilot has been using been upgraded with Lostech, from friend or benefactor we've yet to discover. Its been harder for us to confirm supposed sightings that have been reported by our agents in the periphery realms but we are still following up on those.
Its taken a long time for us to put together the subjects profile case, our head psychologist experts figure the MO or modus operandi for the pilot are based upon the following; its been confirmed that at least 30 of the raids were on underground trafficking sites of sex slaves; details are still sketchy on some due to believed local interference in our investigations, we've since requested higher level investigators to pay them a visit. The profile in the end leads us to believe that the pilot either was a victim themselves or may have had a close family member or friend that was. Whether they are searching for someone specific or just going to where ever they discover locations at has yet to be determined. Even intel on how they are gaining info on these sites is a mystery to us as local and regional security forces have not known of these sites until after cleaning up the mess.
Whomever this person is locals have yet to file any charges upon them though there are rewards being issued for information as vigilante justice is not approved in any planetary system.
We have let it be known on local planets if they have information to please contact their local Comstar representatives or message them at crimestoppers@comstar.com

I'll fix it when I get home out and about at the moment. Much easier to read off PC compared to mobile device

Its an awesome picture for sure but I thought we were supposed to work based off your Slayer which you presented originally here??
-
Oops didn't know that. Let me know easy enough to do. Fluff is usually the harder part

That was the idea but this Manslayer was a good idea with some fluff to it.
-
Alrighty then, one of these days I will work on this. One of these days....
-
Redid the fluff for Manslayer a little and Ice if you like I can easily make the design based off the Slayer
I redid the Dragonslayer just need to touch up on the fluff later or tomorrow.
