WHM-6Rs- a Steiner take on the SLDF Warhammer
« on: August 26, 2015, 02:24:56 PM »

While the advent of Ferro Fibrous Armor and Double Heat sinks made the WHM-6R Warhammer a greatly improved machine, many Critics of the design noted that the so called "Royal" Warhammer was over sinked for what it could do.  the solution for the SLDF was to sell of 6Rb Warhammers and focus on an improved WHM-7A.  it did not take long for House Mechwarriors to figure out the same thing most SLDF pilots did.  the 17 Double heat sinks allowed the WHM-6Rb to fire all of it's weapons at a run... but by time it could practically do so, the Donal PPCs were inside their minimum range.

Most houses just grinned and beared the privilege of never overheating in their mechs, but the Quartermaster Corps of the LCAF started ordering the excess double heat sinks to be ripped out and think tanks to figure out how to effectively replace the equipment.

the tonnage and space provided by removing the Double Heat Sinks made the torso as canvernous as the Reunifacation War Warhammers.  an engineer from the 16th Lyran Guard suggested adding CASE to the mech and relocating the maching gun ammo bin to the same location as the short ranged missiles.  An AFFS officer attached to the Skye Rangers on Military exchange told of an unofficial modification of their Warhammers that removed the SRM Rack in favor of up-armoring the entire mech.  with the removal of excess heat sinks this up armoring could be done while retaining the SRM pack.  Finally Star Corps insisted on adding a Beagle probe to the Warhammer at it's own cost, a piece of equipment regarded by the LCAF as a "cute toy for scout mechs."  after action reports from the filed showed howver the probe was invaluable in urban combat

the new WHM-6Rs was distributed to officers Hauptmann rank and above acting as "point men" among lances and companies of Warhammers.  a few of these found thier way into the SLDF as well and became valued among non Royal command officers.

The removal of the "excess" Double heat sinks had a secondary effect for the LCAF during the succession wars, in sofar as the LCAF was the last house to functionally "lose" the technology in the mid 29th century

While the addition of the probe is nice, I probably would have gone with the Guardian ECM instead and save the Whammy from getting pounded as it is an obvious target on the battlefield.

I was inspired by this excerpt from CM Mercs

Quote
The Warhammer mounts an impressive weapons array, symmetrical save for the missile rack. Enemy MechWarriors rightfully fear the Warhammer’s long-range weapons, but its short-range firepower is intended to destroy both enemy ’Mechs and infantry. In some ways, incorporating anti-infantry weapons on such a large ‘’Mech seems superfluous, but the Warhammer’s position at the front often leads it into urban areas where infantry ambushes are likely. Unlike most other heavy ’Mechs, the Warhammer sacrifices self-protection in the name of damage infliction. Its light armor has cost many precocious and reckless MechWarriors their lives.
