Title: The REAL Clan Second-Line BattleMechs

Okay.  Today, I am posting my take on Clan second-line BattleMechs.  The major problem that I have with so many canon examples are the almost constant use of XL engines.  Second-line units are cheap and disposable . . . much like the (normally) free-birth Warriors assigned to them.  But so many canon designs are ANYTHING but cheap.  Many also make little sense (to me) in their weapon choices.

I am fixing that for my game, and have decided to share the designs with you.  Not everyone will care for my take; but that is okay.  Use what you want and discard the rest.  There are forty-one total designs, which should be MORE than enough to fill out your 2nd-line/garrison forces. 

As for the designs themselves, I will be reimagining all (or most) of the Clan second-line 'Mechs into something more appropriate to their stated roles and use.  The focus will be on (1) low cost (not necessarily low BV, however) and (2) combat effectiveness.  Tonnage may (or may not) changes, but I will attempt to keep the armament SIMILAR to current canon designs.  There will also be a few new additions by your humble servant (me) and do not be surprised if you find that the names have been changed to protect the innocent (particularly those 'Mechs where the designers got lazy and just labeled them as 'IIC').

Fire Mandrill Mk II

Overview:
The Fire Mandrill is a solid fire support BattleMech.  Although some ask the  question why Clan Fire Mandrill would need both the Fire Mandrill and the Howler (a similar BattleMech), the two have different speeds and the Fire Mandrill carries heavier firepower, albeit on a slower platform.  The Mandrills  seem happy with both of their light BattleMechs, however.

Capabilities:
Massing 30-tons, the Fire Mandrill uses a 150-rate fusion engine that provides for a walking speed of 54 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 86.4 kph.  Although considered quite slow for a light BattleMech, the Fire Mandrill is fast enough to keep pace with medium, heavy, and assault stars and provides a low-cost unit to fill out a Star.

The design team used endo-steel and five tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (91.42 of maximum) on the design, making the Fire Mandrill rugged and with a hefty payload.  Both the right and left torso carry an LRM-15 launcher with a total of four tons of ammunition (16 salvoes per launcher).  Two center torso mounted ER Medium Lasers provide for additional firepower at closer ranges.  The design overheats slightly when all four weapons are used, but any Clan Warrior should be more than able to compensate for the heat effects.

Hellwasp Mk II

Overview:
Also known as the Commando IIC, the Hellwasp is a solid light striker that was based on the Lyran Commando.  Fast moving, with reasonable armor protection for a light BattleMech and an incredible battery of short-range missiles, this design sees service throughout the Clans of Kerensky.

Capabilities:
Massing 30 tons, the Hellwasp uses a 210-rate standard fusion engine that provides for a walking speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 118.8 kph.  Endo-steel was used on the design, along with five tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (91.42% of maximum).  Only the basic ten double-strength heat sinks were fitted, but on the Hellwasp this is sufficient.

The longest range weapon is an ER Medium Laser in the left arm.  In close, no fewer than three SRM-6 launchers have been fitted onto this 'Mech (right arm, right torso, and left torso), each fed by its own ammunition bin with 15 salvoes.  Even Warriors assigned to the heaviest BattleMechs find themselves flinching when a full salvo of 18 SRMs is flushed in their direction; these missiles have a tendency to find weak  points in the armor and mission kill critical systems of BattleMechs and OmniMechs.

Howler Mk II

Overview:
Designed as a fast moving long-range missile skirmisher, the Howler plays a crucial role in the second-line garrison Clusters of the Clans.  Simple, rugged, and with ample firepower and speed, the Howler can be found in all of the Clans of Kerensky.

Capabilities:
Massing 30 tons, the Howler uses an inexpensive and reliable 210-rate standard fusion engine that provides sufficient power for the BattleMech to walk at speeds of 75.6 kilometers per hour and run at 118.8 kph.  No jump jets were mounted on the design.  Endo-steel internal structure was used to maximize tonnage for the weapons loadout, and five tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating gives this light BattleMech 91.24% of maximum armor protection for a 30-ton 'Mech.

The main weapon is an LRM-15 launcher fitted to the right torso.  Three tons of ammunition provide a total of twenty-four salvoes, which the Clans consider more than ample for most Trials.  Both the right and left arms carry a secondary ER Medium Laser to give the design some added punch at closer ranges as well as weapons that function after the ammo bins run dry.  Ten double-strength heat sinks come standard and on the Howler are more than capable of dealing with all generated heat; the design is quite cool-running in most circumstances.

Incubus Mk II

Overview:
The Incubus is a capable light strike BattleMech in use by every Clan of Kerensky.  Fast and mobile for a second-line BattleMech, it carries a good mix of anti-'Mech and anti-personnel weaponry.  Lacking only sophisticated electronics, the design serves the Clans well.


Capabilities:
At 30-tons in mass, the Incubus is one of the lighter Clan designs.  The heart and soul of this 'Mech is the 210-rate fusion engine that gives it a walking speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 118.8 kph.  Seven jump jets give the Incubus a maximum jump capability of 210 meters, and the low-heat weaponry allows for the near constant use of those jets while still remaining
cool.

Engineers used endo-steel internal structure in the construction, along with five tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (91.42% of maximum coverage).  The main gun is a right-arm mounted Medium Pulse Laser.  In close, the design carries two ER Small Lasers (right torso and left torso), four Machine-Guns (two each in the right torso and left torso), and a Flamer in the left arm.  A half-ton ammunition bin provides a total of 100 bursts for the four guns, or 25 bursts apiece.

The revelation of the Incubus was terrifying to the Inner Sphere forces in 3049; its ability to decimate entire Infantry Platoons in a single burst contributed heavily to the defeat of FedCom RCTs.  Against other light (and even medium-weight) BattleMechs, the Incubus was a holy terror, able to rip apart fellow scouts almost with impunity.  It is certain to remain a vital component of the Clan Touman for years to come.

Iron Cobra Mk II

Overview:
Also known as the Locust IIC, the Iron Cobra serves as a fast moving recon element for Clan second-line forces.  Simple in nature and rugged, this BattleMech is prized by nearly all of the Clans of Kerensky.

Capabilities:
Massing 30-tons, the Iron Cobra uses a 240-rate fusion engine that provides for a walking speed of 86.4 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 129.6 kph.  No jump jets are mounted, but the design does incorporate five tons of ferro-fibrous armor (91.42% of maximum coverage) over an endo-steel frame.

The design carries a head-mounted Active Probe in order to maximize its role as scout/recon BattleMech.  Armament consists of four ER Medium lasers (one each in the right arm and left arm; two in the center torso).  Eleven double-strength heat sinks provide 100% heat dissipation for all weapons on a run, making the Iron Cobra a cool-running machine with enough firepower to ensure that hostile scout hunters do not often want to catch this BattleMech.

Piranha Mk II

Overview:
Designed to ensure Clan dominance over conventional infantry, the use of the Piranha has declined in recent years as Elemental Battle Armor has become more and more prevalent in Clan formations.  This older BattleMech stills sees use in Garrison forces tasked with keeping order among the Clan enclaves, and occasionally in second-line forces expected to encounter large numbers of conventional infantry troopers.

Capabilities:
Massing 30-tons, the Piranha is an extremely specialized combat unit.  A 240-rate standard fusion engine provides for walking and running speeds equal to the SLDF Locust (86.4 kilometers per hour and 129.6 kph, respectively).  Endo-steel internal structure was used to save tonnage and the design is outfitted with five tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating that provides 91.42% of the maximum armor protection for a 30-ton chassis.

The only weapons with significant reach on the Piranha are two ER Medium Lasers, carried in the right and left arms.  The rest of the payload is given over to an insane amount of machine-guns:  twelve in total.  Each arm carries two and both the right and left torso are fitted with four each.  Two half-ton ammunition bins are provided (one each in the right and left torso) giving each MG just over sixteen bursts.  Tremendously effective against infantry, the Piranha has also proven itself quite capable in the anti-BattleMech and anti-vehicle roles . . . provided that it can manage to close the distance to where the massed batteries of machine-guns can come into play.

Snapping Turtle Mk II

Overview:
Incredibly slow for a Clan war-machine, the Snapping Turtle (also known as the UrbanMech IIC) is a purely defensive oriented BattleMech in common use only by Clans Blood Spirit and Smoke Jaguar.  When tasked with defending a specific location, the 'Mech excels; it fails when forced to respond to maneuver warfare.  No other Clans field any appreciable numbers of this BattleMech.

Capabilities:
Massing 30-tons, the Snapping Turtle uses a low-powered 90-rate fusion engine that makes it incredibly sluggish to respond.  Walking speed is a mere 32.4 kilometers per hour with a running maximum of 54 kph.  The design does carry three jump jets (maximum jump range of 90 meters), but this is not enough to fully compensate for the low speed.

Endo-steel was used to save tonnage for weapons, along with five tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (91.42% of maximum coverage).  Still, only two guns were installed on this BattleMech:  an ER Medium Laser in the left arm and a massive Ultra AC-20 in the right arm.  Two tons of ammunition provide 10 single bursts or 5 double taps with the UAC-20; this was deemed as acceptable by the
Spirits and Jaguars considering that the Snapping Turtle will be operating close by resupply.  On the bright side, the Snapping Turtle is a cool-running BattleMech, even with just ten double-strength heat sinks.  The design cannot overheat even on a jumping alpha-strike where the Ultra AC is double-fired.

However, the specialization of this design has kept it out of service with the vast majority of the Clans of Kerensky, who feel that they need BattleMechs (even in second-line forces) that are capable of offensive operations, as well as defensive ones.

Variants:
The Snapping Turtle Mk II-b replaces the Ultra AC-20 with an LB-20X autocannon, reducing maximum firepower but increasing endurance and flexibility.  Roughly one-in-three Snapping Turtles encountered are the II-b variant.

Snow Fox Mk II

Overview:
The Snow Fox was designed mainly as an attempt to perfect the quad motive system of the SLDF Scorpion and Goliath BattleMechs.  Intended for service as a fast strike BattleMech, it has proven to be a capable 'Mech, albeit one that can be difficult to use at times.  To make up for the lack of torso twisting in quad designs, the scientists who constructed the Snow Fox added jump jets; when combined with the stability of the quad design this resulted in an excellent, highly mobile scout.  Still, the very different handling characteristics of the quad design makes the Snow Fox a relatively uncommon (and disliked) BattleMech today amongst the majority of Clan Warriors.

Capabilities:
Massing 30-tons, the four-legged Snow Fox uses a 210-rate engine that gives the design a walking speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 118.8 kph.  Seven jump jets (three each in the right and left torso, one in the center torso) provide for a jumping capability of 210 meters.  Matching the speed and jump range of the ancient SLDF Assassin, the low profile of the Snow
Fox
has only added to its capabilities as a scout.  Designers used endo-steel internal structure to save as much tonnage as possible, but (unfortunately), only a limited amount of ferro-fibrous armor plating could be installed on the outer surfaces.  Just four and a half tons provide a total of 76.1% of the maximum armor protection for a quad 30-ton chassis.

However, the relatively light armor protection allowed the design team to fit a fairly heavy array of weapons and equipment on the design.  For the scouting/recon mission, the Snow Fox carries an Active Probe in the right torso and an ECM Suite in the left torso.  To prevent ammunition worries from curtailing long-range recon sweeps, only energy weapons were mounted:  one ER Medium Laser in the center torso and five ER Small Lasers (two each in the right and left torso; one in the head).  Ten double-strength heat sinks deal
with the majority of the heat concerns; only when jumping 180-meters or farther AND firing all onboard weapons will the Snow Fox overheat . . . and then only by a minimal amount.

Fire Ant Mk II

Overview:
Also known as the Jenner IIC, the Fire Ant is a fast moving light striker that manages to pack quite a punch on its compact frame.   Although in service with all of the Clans, few posses more than a handful, except for Clan Ice Hellion, which prizes this garrison 'Mech for its speed, mobility, and ability to smoothly fit into their defensive doctrine, and Clan Jade Falcon, who sees this garrison 'Mech as a small Raptor, ideally suited to their offensive doctrine.

Capabilities:
The Fire Ant mass 35 tons, using endo-steel internal structure to save tonnage.  A powerful, yet compact 245-rate standard fusion engine provides for a walking speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 118.8 kph.  Seven jump jets are fixed to the torsos granting a maximum jump range of 210 meters.  The design is relatively well protected with 5.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor
plating (88.23% of the maximum possible protection on a chassis of this size) and ten double-strength heat sinks comes standard.

Armament mirrors that of the ancient Jenner.  A Streak SRM-4 launcher is mounted in the center torso, fed by a one-ton missile supply in the right torso.  Both arms (which lack lower arm and hand actuators and can swivel) carry two lasers, an ER Medium Laser and an ER Small Laser.  The Fire Ant can overheat by a fair margin on a jumping Alpha Strike, but a trained Warrior can easily control the heat generated by this BattleMech.  The 'no-lock, no-fire' nature of the Streaks does help control the heat, even on a maximum distance jump.

Horned Owl Mk II

Overview:
Relatively common among all the Clans, the Horned Owl is a capable and mobile light-weight BattleMech.  Armed exclusively with pulse lasers and a TAG system for artillery fire missions, the Horned Owl is a valued element of any Touman.

Capabilities:
Massing 35-tons, the Horned Owl uses a 210-rate fusion engine that provides for a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph.  Six jump jets are fitted as standard equipment allowing for jumps of up to 180 meters.  The design team used an endo-steel internal structure and fitted six tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating to the chassis (for 96.63% of maximum coverage).

The main armament is a right arm mounted Large Pulse Laser.  Highly accurate and fairly long-ranged, this weapon serves as the primary gun of the Horned Owl.  At shorter ranges a Medium Pulser Laser mounted in the head adds its fury to that of its larger cousin.  The left arm carries a TAG system for designating targets for Clan artillery rockets and guided bombs.   Only the standard ten double-strength heat sinks are mounted, but this design needs no more than.  It is perfectly heat neutral even on a jumping Alpha Strike.

Variants:
The Horned Owl Mk II-b removes the TAG target designation system and replaces it with a Small Pulse Laser.  Although this variant runs slightly hotter than the standard version, many Clans that do not commonly use artillery prefer the II-b over the original design.

Corvis Mk II

Overview:
An older BattleMech not based on any SLDF chassis, the Corvis was built by Clan Snow Raven in the early years of the Golden Century, just after the introduction of new, lighter and more powerful, Clan weapons, and less bulky internal components.  Although used in front line forces for several decades, today all examples of this design are relegated to garrison units.

Capabilities:
The 40-ton Corvis uses a 200-rate fusion engine that allows the BattleMech to walk at 54 kilometers per hour and run at 86.4 kph.  No jump jets are mounted on the design, but in compensation it carries heavy armament and armor for a 40-ton chassis; while remaining fairly inexpensive to produce and maintain as well.  The design team used endo-steel internal structure and seven tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (97.81% of maximum coverage) along with ten double-strength heat sinks.

The primary weapon is an Ultra AC-10 mounted in the right torso and fed from a two-ton ammunition magazine.  Each arm carries a single Medium Pulse Laser, and two more lasers (one ER Medium in the left torso and one ER Small in the center torso) rounds out the weapons package. 

Although slower than other Clan designs of its weight class, few others carry as much firepower for the same low cost.  The Corvis can be found in virtually every Clan Touman.

A common, if unappreciated, second-line BattleMech in the Clan Toumans is the Emerald Mantis, also known as the Clint IIC.  While the design lacks heavy firepower, it is relatively inexpensive and fairly fast and mobile for a 40-ton BattleMech with a standard fusion engine.  The reach and anti-air capabilities of the main gun provides many garrison units with air defense capabilities on a mobile and fairly rugged platform.  While not the first choice of any Warrior, every Clan fields at least one of these BattleMechs in nearly every garrison Cluster.

Capabilities:
The Emerald Mantis masses forty tons in overall weight, using a 240-rate standard fusion engine to achieve a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph.  The design features six jump jets for a maximum jump distance of 180 meters.  Endo-steel internal structure was used, along with six tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (83.94% of maximum protection).  Ten double-strength heat sinks alleviate all heat concerns under normal operating conditions.

This design carries an LB-5X autocannon in the right arm (fed from a two ton magazine containing 40 bursts of fire) as the main gun.  Smaller than many such weapons, the LB-5X has an outstanding range and the air defense properties make it a useful weapon system.  Secondary weapons consist of two ER Medium Lasers (head and left arm) and a flamer (left arm) for anti-personnel and incendiary
work.

Though it excels at little, the Emerald Mantis is quite cheap and easy to manufacture.  It is certain to remain a component of all Clan Toumans throughout the foreseeable future.

Feathered Serpent Mk II

Overview:
[NOTE:  I hated that they turned the Phoenix Hawk into an 80-ton monstrosity that is NOTHING like the SLDF or 3025 version.  This is MY vision of what the Phoenix Hawk IIC should have been.]

The Feathered Serpent, also known as the Phoenix Hawk IIC is one of the premier Clan second-line recon BattleMechs.  Fast, well-armored for its size, and carrying a bevy of sensors and electronic warfare suites, the Feathered Serpent is an indispensible part of the Clan Toumans.

Capabilities:
Massing 40-tons, the Feathered Serpent uses a 280-rate standard fusion engine that provides for a 75.6 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 118.8 kph.  Seven jump jets are fitted to the frame with a maximum jump distance of 210 meters.  Endo-steel internal structure was used to save available tonnage for weapons and equipment, while seven tons of armor plating provides for good protection (97.81% of maximum).

Armament is a light, with an ER Medium Laser in the right arm as the main weapon.  Secondary guns consist of two ER Small Lasers (left arm and center torso) and a Flamer (left arm).  However, in addition to these weapons, the Feathered Serpent carries an Active Probe (right torso), an ECM Suite (left torso), and a TAG system (right arm).  These electronics make this BattleMech a superb scout and recon unit, even though the damage potential of this war-machine (without support) is rather low.

Sand Devil Mk II

Overview:
Much desired by the Clans of Kerensky, the Sand Devil (also known as the Griffin IIC) is a powerful and fast moving 40-ton BattleMech that is highly efficient and fairly lost cost.  Able to engage targets at range, the design loses no effectiveness when it closes.  Prized by Warriors in nearly every Clan, the Sand Devil is encountered on virtually every enclave in the Homeworlds.

Capabilities:
Massing 40-tons, the Sand Devil acheives a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph by using a 240-rate standard fusion engine.  Mobility is enhanced by the use of six jump jets, for a maximum jumping capability of 180 meters.  Endo-steel was standard, along with seven tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (97.81% of maximum protection for a 40-ton chassis).  Ten double-strength heat sinks provide good, if not stellar, heat dissipation.

But where the Emerald Mantis carries fairly light firepower, the Sand Devil instead is relatively heavily armed, albeit with only two weapon systems.  The main gun is an ER Large Laser in the right arm, supported by an LRM-15 in the left torso fed by a three-ton ammunition magazine (for a total of 24 missile salvoes).  Only overheating on a jumping alpha strike of 120 meters or farther, the Sand Devil has proven itself over the decades as a reliable and capable BattleMech that seldom fails its Warrior in combat.

Crimson Hydra Mk II

Overview:
The Crimson Hydra (also known as the Wyvern IIC) is a fairly rare BattleMech that is predominately used by Clan Steel Viper.  With average speed and mobility, it carries a hefty missile load while still remaining inexpensive.  Other Clans tend to prefer more specialized designs, but the general purpose nature of this BattleMech seems to fit Viper doctrine well.

Capabilities:
The Crimson Hydra masses 45-tons and uses a 225-rate standard Fusion engine that provides for a walking speed of 54 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 86.4 kph.   Five jump jets gives this design superior mobility with a maximum jumping range of 150 meters.  Like most Clan second-line units, it uses endo-steel internal structure and is heavily armor with eight tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (the maximum possible for a 45-ton chassis).

Armament consists of an ER Large Laser in the right arm, an ER Medium Laser in the left arm, an LRM-15 launcher with two tons of ammunition (16 shots) in the right torso, and an SRM-6 launcher with one ton of ammunition (15 shots) in the left torso.   Thirteen double-strength heat sinks allow a Warrior to fire all weapons and generate only movement heat.

Great Wyrm Mk II

Overview:
The Great Wyrm (also known as the Dragon IIC) is a capable and rather impressive design that delivers heavy firepower in a compact and inexpensive package.  Although slower than most Clan front-line OmniMechs of its weight, the Great Wrym is fast enough to keep pace with heavy units and is fast enough to function in a second-line unit.  Prized for its heavy firepower, the Great Wyrm can be found in the Touman of almost every Clan.

Capabilities:
Massing 45-tons, the Great Wyrm uses endo-steel internal structure to save as much tonnage as possible; for defense, eight tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating provides 100% of the maximum possible armor coverage for this BattleMech.  The design team used a 225-rate standard Fusion engine which provides for a walking speed of 54 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 86.4 kph.

Armament consists of two ER Medium Lasers (left arm and right torso), an LRM-15 launcher (center torso) with two tons of ammunition (left torso), and an ER PPC (right arm).  Fifteen double-strength heat sinks alleviate all but heat generated from movement. 

The original concept and design of the Great Wyrm included a smaller LRM rack and two very light ballistic weapons . . . however, following the sudden and rather violent death of the Scientist in charge of the project, the prototype was redesigned to its current configuration.

Stone Lion Mk II

Overview:
Although often maligned for being 'mediocre', the Shadow Hawk of the SLDF was nonetheless one of the most common BattleMechs ever produced.  It was fast (for its day), mobile, reliable, rugged, and while not equipped with great amounts of firepower, it carried enough.

To honor that SLDF BattleMech, the Clans built the Stone Lion (also referred to as the Shadow Hawk IIC) during the Golden Century.  Originally intended for front-line service, it has become a second-line/garrison BattleMech since the introduction of the OmniMech.  However, it remains in production to this day.

Capabilities:
At 45-tons the Stone Lion is a solid medium-weight BattleMech.  A 270-rate standard Fusion engine and six jump jets gives this unit the movement profile of the SLDF Phoenix Hawk:  64.8 kilometers per hour walking, 97.2 kph running, and 180 meters jump capability.  Endo-steel internal structure comes standard, along with eight tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (for 100% of the maximum possible armor coverage on a 45-ton frame).

The armament pattern follows that of the original Shadow Hawk fairly closely; the greatest exceptions being the replacement of the original Class 5 Autocannon with an ER Large Laser in the right torso and the addition of two Machine-guns in the left arm with a half-ton of ammunition.  The remainder of the weapon package remains mostly the same, starting with an ER Medium Laser in the right arm backing up the long-ranged weapon.  The left torso carries an LRM-5 launcher with one ton of ammunition (24 shots), while the center torso is fitted with an SRM-4 launcher (instead of the original two-tube SRM).  A ton of ammunition is stored in the left torso for this system (25 shots).  Eleven double-strength heat sinks alleviate all but movement heat, so Warriors assigned to a Stone Lion still needs to keep a careful eye on their heat gauges.

Overall, the Stone Lion is a capable and effective war-machine for Clan second-line and garrison forces; more than able to deal with heavy-weight (or even some assault-weight) Inner Sphere BattleMechs.

Conjurer Mk II

Overview:
The Conjurer is a fairly common medium-weight design in use by almost every Clan.  Fast moving, well armored, and with a good spread of weapon systems and electronics for almost every conceivable stituation, this BattleMech often forms the core of Clan second-line and garrison forces.

Capabilities:
At 50 tons, the Conjurer uses a 300-rate standard fusion engine that provides for a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph.  The design team originally planned on incorporating jump jets in the design for added flexibility, but these were omitted from the final submission to instead allow for the installation of several pieces of electronic gear that were deemed more useful in the long run.  An endo-steel chassis is standard, along with eight and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (96.44% of
maximum coverage).  Tend double-strength heat sinks allow for constant operation without generating excess overheat.

Armament wise, the Conjurer relies on a powerful and long-ranged Large Pulse Laser in the right arm for its main weapon.  At closer ranges, two SRM-6 launchers, each with a ton of ammunition for a total of 15 double salvoes, have been installed in the right and left torsos.  For anti-personnel work, this BattleMech carries two machine-guns in the left arm, along with a half-ton of ammunition (100 bursts total).  The final elements of the design are an Active Probe in the head, which helps in flushing out hostile infantry and increases
the overall sensor sensitivity and a TAG system in the left arm for designating targets for artillery strikes.

Pouncing Jaguar Mk II

Overview:
Designed by Clan Smoke Jaguar, the Pouncing Jaguar (also known as the Hunchback IIC) second-line BattleMech is either loved or hated by the Clans of Kerensky.  A highly mobile design, albeit slightly slow for its weight, with good (if not exceptional armor protection), this design is feared for its sheer firepower.  Unfortunately, the guns of this BattleMech are rather short ranged, which makes employing this BattleMech difficult in some instances.  However, in the right terrain, the Pouncing Jaguar is lethal beyond all measure.

Capabilities:
This BattleMech masses fifty-tons, using endo-steel internal structure and eight tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (90.53% of maximum) to save as much tonnage for weapons as possible without using an expensive XL-fusion engine.  Designed for a walking speed of 54 kilometers per hour (86.4 kph running), the Pouncing Jaguar uses a 250-rate standard fusion engine, which helps keep overall cost and resources used low.  To alleviate the slightly below average speed, the Jaguar engineers who designed this beast added five jump jets to the chassis, giving this BattleMech 150 meters of jump distance.

The primary weapon is a massive Ultra AC-20 in the right torso, fed by two tons of ammunition (10 bursts total . . . but just 5 double-taps).   Secondary weapons consist of two Medium Pulse Lasers (one in the right arm and one in the left arm) and a head-mounted Flamer.  Although just the ten integral double-strength heat sinks are carried, this was deemed sufficient as the Warrior will only seldom use the Flamer in combination with a full jump and all other weapons.  Warriors assigned to this BattleMech are advised to use the double-tap feature of the Ultra Autocannon sparingly, both to preserve ammunition and to avoid the possibility of the weapon jamming.  However, when the Warrior assigned to this machine DOES fire a double shot from the UAC-20 (and both bursts hit), it can end many fights in seconds, even when the Pouncing Jaguar is facing heavy- or assault-weight units.

Stalking Spider Mk II

Overview:
The Stalking Spider is a capable Clan quad design that is fairly uncommon amongst most Clans.  The drawbacks of a quad BattleMech design are heightened by the Clan dueling system and, while effective, it has not proven itself to be a much desired BattleMech.  Only Clan Goliath Scorpion makes extensive use of this BattleMech, and even they seldom field more than two or three per Cluster.

Capabilities:
At 50 tons, the Stalking Spider (occasionally known as the Scorpion IIC) is (on paper) a formidable BattleMech.  Fast, with excellent armor protection and a good spread of firepower (and with the heat sinks that allow for nearly constant use of that firepower) the design suffers by using a quad motive system.

The heart and soul of this BattleMech is a powerful 300-rate standard fusion engine, which provides for a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph.  No jump jets were mounted on this design, but endo-steel internal structure was used along with nine and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (98.37% of maximum coverage for a 50-ton quad chassis).  Having the armor protection of many heavy-weight BattleMechs is a definate plus for the Stalking Spider, but it has done little to correct the abyssmal view with which many Clan Warriors hold this BattleMech.

An ER PPC in the center torso provides the primary long-ranged sting of this war-machine.  Able to destroy many lighter units with a single shot, this weapon grants the Stalking Spider with a fearsome bite at range.  Supporting the main gun in close, two SRM-6 launchers are mounted (one each in the right and left torso), each fed by their own ton of ammunition (for a total of 15 double salvoes).  Twelve double-strength heat sinks alleviate almost all of the excess heat production on this BattleMech, allowing the Warrior to shoot and
scoot almost without worry for his heat scale.

The design suffers, however, in that many Clan Warriors (used to more traditional biped designs) detest the inability of this BattleMech to torso twist on the battlefield.  And with the stagnation in Clan tactics and Trials being governed by the code of zellbringen, the advantages of a quad design in going to ground and taking cover are often ignored.

Today, the Stalking Spider is used most often as a punishment unit; a BattleMech to assign Warriors who have broken one of the many rules and regulations that govern the Clans.

Variants:
Clan Goliath Scorpion manufactures the only variant of the Stalking Spider . . . the Mk II-b.  This version removes all the standard weapons. Instead, the II-b carries twin ER Large Lasers (both in the center torso), a thirteenth double-strength heat sink, and a two-ton targeting computer.  Frighteningly effective when engaging targets at long-range while hull-down, the Mk II-b is making some Clans (the Horses and Adders) take a second look at this much maligned BattleMech.

Ursus Mk II

Overview:
A relatively rare Clan design originally constructed by Clan Ghost Bear, the Ursus is a rather unique Clan BattleMech.  Slower than average, lacking any advantage in mobility, and forfeiting (for the most part) the powerful and compact Clan long-range energy weapons, the design nonetheless serves a useful purpose.  Primarily deployed as an air-defense and anti-vehicle BattleMech, it can be quite effective when used against other BattleMechs . . . provided that the Warrior piloting the Ursus plays to its strengths and not its weaknesses.

Capabilities:
The Ursus is a 50-ton design with a 250-rate standard fusion engine (54 kilometers per hour walking, 86.4 kph running) with no jump jets.  The design does use endo-steel internal strucutre and features  eight tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (90.53% of maximum coverage).

The armament is rather strange for a BattleMech of the Clans:  the long-range weapons consist of an LB-5X autocannon in the left torso (with 40 bursts) and an LRM-15 launcher in the right torso (with 16 salvoes).  For support at closer ranges, the Ursus carries two Medium Pulse Lasers (one each in the right and left arm) and an SRM-6 launcher in the left torso (with 15 salvoes). 

Although only the ten integral double-strength heat sinks stored in the engine are fixed, this is sufficient for the Ursus.  A running alpha strike with all weapons will generate exactly the amount of heat dissipated, allowing the Warrior to remain heat neutral in combat. 

Prized for its cool-running nature by some Warriors, most consider the design lacking in concentrated firepower.  But even these acknowledge that in the air defense role, the Ursus excels.

One side note I'd make being standard Mechs I'd have put the additional heats in the legs first before assigning the Endo and Ferro makes best use of them if in water otherwise continue to be quite nice

The rugged and versatile Vapor Eagle is found throughout the Clans of Kerensky.  The heaviest medium-weight BattleMech found in second-line and garrison units, it serves as a successor to the revered Dervish, Griffin, and Shadow Hawk designs.  Often used as a command BattleMech for medium-weight Stars, the Vapor Eagle is mobile, moderately fast, very well armored, and packs a substantial punch . . . all traits that the Clans admire.

Capabilities:
At 55-tons, the Vapor Eagle manages to weigh in at the very top end of the medium-weight class.  This BattleMech has been provided with a 275-rate standard fusion engine that gives the design the ability to walk at speeds of 54 kilometers per hour and run at 86.4 kph.  Five jump jets allow for a maximum jump capability of 150 meters.

The design engineers responsible for the Vapor Eagle used an endo-steel chassis for the internal structure and layered nine and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor atop (for 98.37% of maximum coverage for a 55-ton unit).  Thirteen double-strength heat sinks were installed, but a full jumping alpha strike still strains the system.  However, with only movement heat being generated as excess when all weapons are engaged, this was deemed to be sufficient.

The main gun is a long-ranged, powerful, and accurate Large Pulse Laser fitted to the right arm.  Three more Medium Pulse Lasers are installed in the left torso in a pattern reminiscent of the SLDF Thunderbolt.  At closer ranges, a SRM-6 launcher in the right torso (with 15 salvoes) adds still more firepower to the design.  The engineers also included two left arm mounted Machine-Guns (and a half-ton of ammunition for 100 bursts) to deal with any potential infantry threat.

With its accurate and hard-hitting pulse lasers, the Vapor Eagle is easily able to constantly use the installed jump jets while still managing to hit its target, making it the ideal BattleMech for a Star or Trinary (or even Cluster) commander, a fact that the heavy armor protection only reinforces.  Many Clan duels and Trials of Grievance are fought from the cockpit of a Vapor Eagle, and for those lucky few Warriors assigned to one, it comes close to achieving the title of the perfect BattleMech.

One side note I'd make being standard Mechs I'd have put the additional heats in the legs first before assigning the Endo and Ferro makes best use of them if in water otherwise continue to be quite nice

Most of the designs use DHS as 'fillers' for torsos that (on some designs) are otherwise empty.  Those who have items in the torso use the DHS as crit-soakers to prevent ammo explosions.  Shrug.  It is six of one and half-a-dozen of the other; but I would rather have a DHS in the torso to soak damage than in the legs.  Especially since most of these designs are pretty forgiving heat-wise.

Yeah, but to me that premise always struck me as a retcon (a minor one).  From the start of the introduction of the Clans, front-line units had OmniMechs . . . only second-line units were equipped with BattleMechs.  But the BattleMechs put out by FASA and their successors weren't (by and large) the low-cost units that I would expect to see in second-line units filled with free-birth and marginal true-borns.  Many were as expensive as OmniMechs of  equal tonnage . . . and that just doesn't make sense (to me, at least).

And may I ask why Clan Ice Hellion doesn't seem to use that much Second Line 'Mechs?

What I never understood was the lack of diversity among Omnis for the Clans. In a general sense you should have every ton chassis with different frills - engine size, internal structural and armor for example things that aren't easy to swap. However if you look at new Omni designs many match the performance of older ones with minor changes. I mean if you got another 100 ton chassis don't make it 3/5 with a 300XL engine.

Let us look at the Vapor Eagle, for example.  It would cost 6,982,427 C-Bills for an Omni-version vs. 5,608,107 C-Bills for the standard BattleMech.

Sure, the Clans do not use C-Bills, but they still must utilize RESOURCES which can be valued in Kerenskies (although I am not certain of the exact exchange rate, LOL). 

The Omni-Vapor Eagle consumes more than 24.5% GREATER resources than the standard BattleMech.

To my mind, that is a good reason NOT to utilize Omni-tech for second-line forces.

As to your second question, the Clans listed for each of the 'Mechs above are not the USERS, but rather the Clans that have PRODUCTION lines for that particular 'Mech.  Rest assured, the Hellions use a great many of these 'Mechs (as do all Clans), they just don't have as many factories as larger Clans.

Takiro, if I were designing the canon OmniMechs, that is exactly what I would do.  Have ONE 50-ton chassis (for example) moving at 5/8, another at 6/9, and another at 7/11 with no fixed jump jets or equipment for maximum flexibility.

hardly a Retcon, since with the exception of the Wolf and Falcon Sourcebooks we have NO word on hard rosters. likewise therte are second line clusters with OmniMechs, just a significantly lower percentage.  for me the clans are not looking at cost, nor amount of resources required, but would rather look at "what do we make and how can we continue to take advantage of those components.

take the 375 XL engine, utilized on the Mad Cat.  it really can only be mounted on 75 ton mechs, of which the clans only produce the Mad Cat to use.  building other mechs that use the 375 allows you to maximize resoure allocation since the engines are already being built.  the ultimate study in this is the Blood Kite, which utilizes ER large lasers, LRM 15s, and SRM 4s all weapons that the Spirits build in quantity.  you wil note Spirit Mechs, fighters, and armor tend to use these weapons

Sounds about right. If I do fanon versions for say the 100 ton chassis there will be 3 different kinds. The Dire Wolf is the 300XL base but there would be a 400XL speed version (i.e. the Iron Cheetah) and a 300 standard that could take a beating. Might just create such a design.  ;)

Oh and Master A this second line philosophy could make Star League 'Mechs with XL engines useful again as a preferred equipment type. Plus there is plenty of subpar InnerSphere XLs for replacement parts or to be used in said fashion.

I see your point but I think mine wasn't clear enough.
Let's get back to the Vapor Eagle: you said it, an Omni Vapor Eagle cost 24,5% more than a standard one.
But what if with this Omni and only a slight change in weapons, you can have it replace in two battles, two different 'Mechs (let's say an infantry killer and a fire-support 'Mech). So this time, your Omni would not be 24,5% more costly but 37,75% less costly.
This is the way Omni should be used: make more with less.

I like your thread. Clan Fennec utilizes both Omnimech and Standard Battlemechs in both Front line and Second line forces. We tailor our forces to handle specific tasks. We have Cavalry (Light ,Medium and Heavy ) Horse ( Light and Horse ) Hussar, Dragoon and Striker.

  I agree. While an OmniMech is slightly more expensive than a standard BattleMech, each one isn't  nearly as expensive as two standard BattleMechs. Just use a standard Engine on an OmniMech and the cost will be reasonable. Even if you had only two types of OmniMechs for each weight class (8 total), you could still have a pretty versatile force.

Glass Spider Mk II

Overview:
The Glass Spider is an old Clan second-line/garrison BattleMech that is occasionally referred to as the Rifleman IIC.  Matching that venerable BattleMech in speed, the Glass Spider accomplishes it mission of providing air-defense far more easily than its ancient SLDF kin.  Found in every Touman of the Clans, the Glass Spider plays an important role to this day.

Capabilities:
Massing 60-tons in overall weight, the Glass Spider is relatively underpowered for a Clan war-machine.  A 240-rate standard fusion engine allows for a walking speed of 43.2 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 64.8 kph.  The design team used endo-steel internal structure to save additional weight; further, differing from the original Rifleman design, they installed ten and one half tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating . . . for the absolute maximum protection possible on a 60-ton chassis.

Armament closely matches that of the older SLDF BattleMech; each arm is capable of rotating to the rear and carries a matched pair of weapons:  one LB-5X autocannon and one ER Large Laser.  A total of four tons of ammunition for the LB-5X autocannons are carried (for 40 shots per arm), normally equally divided between slug and cluster.  The Glass Spider forgoes any secondary weapons, but does fit three additional double-heat sinks within its cavernous torsos, for a total of thirteen.  Although this does not completely negate the maximum heat generation of this BattleMech, it does allow the Warrior to maneuver and fire while just generating movement heat.

Matador Mk II

Overview:
For many years, the Matador was a favorite BattleMech of Clan Steel Viper, where it served in their front-line Clusters.  Only recently has the design been relegated to second-line/garrison service in that Clan, replaced by modern OmniMechs.  A powerful, if somewhat slow (although mobile) BattleMech, the Matador carries a variety of weapon systems, but missile launchers form the core of this units firepower.

Capabilities:
60-tons in overall mass, the Matador uses a 240-rate standard fusion engine.  This allows for a walking speed of 43.2 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 64.8 kph.  Four jump jets do somewhat offset the low speed, providing for a maximum jumping distance of 120 meters.  Endo-steel was used to save weight, while the design carries 100% of the maximum armor protection possible on a 60-ton chassis:  ten and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous.

The armament is varied, but the main weapons are four missile launchers.  The right and left torso each carry an LRM-10 launcher with two tons of ammunition  (24 salvoes) per launcher, while the right and left arm each boast an SRM-6 launcher and a ton of SRM ammunition (for 15 total salvoes).  Three Medium Pulse Lasers (right arm, left arm, and left torso) augment the missile launchers, while the right torso carries a pair of machine-guns and a half-ton of ammunition for anti-personnel work. 

Fourteen double-strength heat sinks eliminate all but movement heat from these weapon systems.  This allows a Warrior assigned to a Matador to use his weapons almost constantly for as long as his ammunition supply lasts.  It remains a popular BattleMech (among Second-line and Garrison Warriors, at least) to this day.

Thresher Mk II

Overview:
The Thresher is a capable BattleMech design produced by Clan Diamond Shark and traded to all of the other Clans for needed resources.  This garrison BattleMech is very popular amongst the Warriors of the Clans, who consider it one of the few second-line BattleMechs to approach the proper speed for a Clan Heavy-weight design.  Tough and reliable, the Thresher is appreciated by nearly all Warriors assigned to one.

Capabilities:
Although the Thresher masses 60-tons, the Shark designers used a powerful 300-rate standard fusion engine that manages to keep pace with modern Clan heavy-weight OmniMech designs.  Walking speed is 54 kilometers per hour with a running speed of 86.4 kph.  No jump jets are mounted, but this was deemed a necessary sacrifice to retain sufficient tonnage and space for the weapons loadout.

Like the majority of Clan designs, the Thresher uses endo-steel internal structure as a weight-saving measure.  It also carries ten and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating, which gives this BattleMech the maximum possible armor coverage for a 60-ton frame.  Only the base ten double-strength heat sinks have been included, all stored within the engine housing itself.

The main gun of the Thresher is an Ultra AC-10 located in the right torso.  Two tons of ammunition (for a total of 20 shots) are provided for this weapon.  Although prone to suffering jams, the combination of range and damage on this weapon makes it much appreciated by your typical Clan Warrior.  Each arm carries a single Medium Pulse Laser, replacing the hand actuators on this
BattleMech, while the final set of weapon systems are a matched pair of SRM-6 launchers set in the right and left torsos.  Each missile system is provided with one tons of ammunition for a total of 15 double salvoes.

The Thresher is prone to overheat problems at short-range when the SRMs come into play, but the excess heat production is minimal and can be easily balanced by the Warrior assigned to one of these BattleMechs.

Variants:
Clan Diamond Shark also produces the Thresher Mk II-B version of this BattleMech.  The Mk II-B replaces the Ultra AC-10 with an LB-10X autocannon, reducing potential maximum damage for greater flexibility.
