Overview:
In the late 25th Century, the Taurian Concordat introduced a number of new mech designs for the TDF, starting with the Toro in 2481.  Most of these early designs would be produced in only limited numbers and soon forgotten, only the Toro and Thor would see significant service with the TDF.  The Thor was a massive design that was intended to serve as the anchor of Taurian defensive lines.  Despite concerns about the intensive maintenance requirements of the mech and difficult transporting, the Thor remained in production until the end of the Reunification War.

Capabilities:
The Thor is intended to serve as the anchor for Taurian defensive lines. Rather then focus on mobility, the design team instead emphasized armor protection and firepower.  The 17.5 tons of Ecto-Mineral Armorplate is the maximum that can be carried on the Thor's chassis.  The heavy armor allows the Thor to successfully slug it out with enemy heavy and assault mechs.

Complementing the heavy armor is the a powerful weapons array.  The main punch of the Thor is a pair of Taurus WarWorks PPCs.  These are backed up by a Westen Heavy Autocannon.  For close range defense, the Thor mounts 4 medium lasers, 2 of which are positioned to cover the rear of the mech.  Finally the Thor carries a pair of 2 tube SRM Launchers.  Typically these are loaded with inferno rounds for use against infantry and soft targets.

The biggest flaw with the Thor is it's heat dissipation system.  Despite having devastating firepower, the mech is unable to use it all without suffering severe overheating.  As a result the pilot must carefully manage their fire to avoid overheating and shutting down.

Deployment:
The Thor was deployed to a number of Taurian mech regiments.  Typically the Thor would hold a defensive position, while other mechs in the unit would drive the enemy towards them.  During the Reunification War it was not uncommon for the Taurian defenders to take advantage of their knowledge of the local terrain to set ambushes for the SLDF.  Typically lighter Taurian units would lead the SLDF units towards the ambush, once the pursuers were in range, the Thors would spring the trap and hit the SLDF with devastating firepower.  The SLDF soon became wary of these tactics and would use their air superiority to bombard suspected ambush sites.  Unsurprisingly the TDF's Thors suffered heavy loses as a result and only a few of these mechs survived the Reunification War.  The majority of the survivors were destroyed during the Uprisings, less then a dozen Thors remain in service.

Variants:
There are only 2 variants of the Thor.  The original primative THR-1 featured fewer heatsinks and a class 5 autocannon in place of the Westen Heavy Autocannon.  All of these models were phased out of service by the 2530s.  None saw any action during the Reunification War.

The THR-3 was developed during the war using advanced SLDF technologies that were acquired by the Concordat.  Seeking to fix the major flaw of the Thor, it's inadequate cooling system, the THR-3 replaces the standard heatsinks with double strength models.  Protection is improved by adding a CASE to the right torso to protect against ammo explosions.  The THR-3 also improves the fire power of the new design by adding 2 medium lasers and single small laser.  Due to shortages of the new double strength heatsinks only a limited number of THR-3s were built before production ended in 2596.

Notable Pilots:
Brigadier Jenna Smithson  - Brigadier Smithson commanded the 2nd Battalion of the 6th Concordat Velites.  Stationed on Lothair Brigadier Smithson fought against the SLDF VI Corps when they invaded the planet.  Numerous times during the campaign, Brigadier Smithson took advantage of her opponents lack of knowledge about the world to draw them into traps.  Using her Talos and Toro mechs, Brigadier Smithson would herd the SLDF troops towards her company of Thors.  During the campaign she was credited with the destruction of at least 20 SLDF mechs and her battalion was one of the highest scoring units in the TDF.  She was captured when her mech was destroyed during one of the final battle of the campaign.  She was made a POW and was eventually released at the conclusion of the war.

Reminds me of two things. The name has got me thinking Starcraft II which naturally begs the question is the Odin next? Also I designed the LGN-1 Legionnaire (see below)
long ago for the Marian Hegemony in TRO3065 which is a Home Campaign Book for the MysticX universe. Main weapon load is very similar.

Sorry no Odin- that doesn't start with a T....  I see the similarity in the designs- my inspiration (at least to a certain extent) was the Banshee-S.

Overheating? A classical lvl 1 problem.

Interesting 'Mech.
