==Overview:==
The first medium-weight design of Project 3000 to reach the prototype stage
was Pinard's Fusilier. Forgoing the use of the jump jets, the Pinard design
team (as well as those of Taurus Territorial) decided instead to create a
swift, yet heavily armed medium-weight 'Mech able to serve as both hammer and
anvil on the battlefield.
Of all the traditional 'Mechs found in the Inner Sphere, only the Trebuchet
and Dragon feature the movement profile that the TDF wanted to see in their
new flagship medium-weight designs. Both of these 'Mechs suffered from
serious flaws, however. The Treb was heavily overgunned, underarmored, and
undersinked, and carried a very limited supply of ammunition for its main
battery. The Dragon was moderately well-armored, but due to the weight of its
engine (a neccessity for the speed it was designed to reach) had a fairly
light weapons load for a heavy.
The new Fusilier would be based on a 50-ton frame (like the Treb), but would
carry nearly identical armor and a more appropriate weapons battery than the
Kurita heavy. The first concept of the Fusilier (the FSL-1A) was a mixed
success. Featuring only a medium-heavy autocannon and twin medium lasers, the
design was widely criticized as under-gunned. However, in the heavy cavalry
role for which Pinard designed the 'Mech, the FSL-1A was very effective.
Despite that effectiveness, Pinard was asked to redesign the 'Mech and
increase overall firepower, resulting the prototype FSL-2A which appeared in
2996. Pinard managed to keep the range of the FSL-1A, but added additional
close-combat weapon systems, increasing maximum damage output by 60%.
However, the redesigned 'Mech now had serious concerns with overheat, and cost
more than the original model -1A.
A second redesign resulted in the FSL-3A, which was a compromise between the
two previous designs. Ironically, the procurement board actually listened to
the comments of MechWarriors who tested the machine, and the original FSL-1A
was approved for production. The board of Pinard fumed at the lost time and
money they had spent on the -2A and -3A models and so, in an effort to
maintain the goodwill of his weapons manufacturers, Protector Calderon
authorized the production of a limited number of -2As and -3As, primarily for
the export markets.
All three variants are good quality and capable BattleMechs that see active
duty service in the TDF.
==Capabilities:==
Based upon the Concordat Common Standard 50 chassis, the 50-ton Fusilier uses
a Magna 250 fusion engine to acheive a maximum ground speed of 86.4 kilometers
per hour. The Pinard design team added ten tons of Renault Composites 160
armor to the frame, giving the Fusilier some of best protection available for
a 'Mech of its weight.
Ten standard heat sinks are installed in the design, allowing the use of all
onboard weaponry without excess overheat when fired simultaneously. Movement
does add slightly to overheat, however, but the TDF views the amount generated
as negligible in the field.
The primary weapon of the -1A model Fusilier is a Hyades Weapons Consortium
Retaliation Class 10 Autocannon in the right arm, along with a two-ton
magazine containing 20 bursts of fire. Though the inclusion of the
medium-heavy autocannon required the removal of the right hand actuator, the
procurement board was impressed with the efficiency and effectiveness of the
design as a high-speed gun-carrier.
Two Martin-Gordan Rapier medium lasers back-up the big gun at shorter ranges.
Installed in the left arm and the center torso, these secondaries provide the
MechWarrior piloting a Fusilier with the ability to double his effective
firepower at ranges of 270 meters or less.
Finally, a Martin-Gordan Stiletto small laser has been installed in the head
of the Fusilier, situated just below the cockpit. While this light-weight
can-opener deals little additional damage, at point-blank ranges that little
bit extra can make the diference between life and death.
Pinard took fulll advantage of the developments of Project 3000s light 'Mech
program in the design of their Fusilier. The new cockpit ejection system was
incorporated, as well simpler and more reliable control components. Techs in
particular praise the robust nature of the HWC Retaliation and its ammunition
feed; even in the worst atmospheric conditions, the hearty nature of this
weapon reliably feeds shells into the weapon breech with virtually no jamming
of the mechanism.
The Fusilier is often compared to the Hunchback, an Innner Sphere design of
the same weight which features a nearly identical weapons loadout. The
Fusilier is one-third faster than the Hunchback, however, and carries twice
the ammuniton for its main gun; a gun that furthermore has a greater arc of
fire than that of the Hunchback. Critics point out that the Fusilier is
capable of roughly a third-less damage, but proponents add that the Fusilier
can engage target at 66% greater range.
While the debate between the two continues, the TDF is happy with the
'fast-back' Fusiliers that have been delivered for its use.
==Battle History:==
During a Davion raid on Althea's Choice in 3024, Cornet Khalid Ali in his
Fusilier ('Butteryfly') found himself running low on munitions for his HWC
Retaliation. The skirmish between elements of both the Hyades Light Infantry
and the 3rd Davion Guards had lasted longer than either side was prepared for,
and all 'Mechs were battered and running low on ammunition.
In the midst of the battle, Ali came across a Davion in a battered Crusader.
The heavy 'Mechs missile bins snapped open, but the magazines had run dry.
Ali radioed the Davion, asking him if he would be willing to engaging in a
bout of 'Mech boxing.
Surprised and more than a bit stunned by the offer, the Davion accepted. As
the two began to circle each other, Ali began to dance his Fusilier in the
rope-a-dope, shuffling in and out of the reach of his heavier opponent. The
two sparred for several minutes before the Crusader pilot overreached, and
then Ali and Butterfly were there.
His Fusilier's massive left fist hit the Crusader not once, not twice, but
three times in rapid succession; shattering armor plate and rendering the
heavy 'Mechs right arm useless. And then Ali swung the barrel of his
autocannon in a powerful haymaker that wrenched the Crusader's head about in
nearly a full circle. The pilot knocked unconscious by the blow, the Crusader
sank to the ground.
The skirmish ended as both sides withdrew to rearm and make repairs. To honor
the man who agreed to fight him, Cornet Ali personally returned the Davion
MechWarrior to the Guards before that unit lifted to return home, along with
the battered remains of his Crusader.
At the Davion encampment, Ali fought in the ring (unaugmented, this time)
against a half-dozen of the Davion contingent, defeating each one in turn.
His skill at boxing so impressed the Guards Colonel that he offered to
introduce Ali to the producers who ran the Federated Suns Championship Boxing
League.
Since then, rumor has it that Ali is considering resigning his commission in
order to pursue a full-time boxing career on New Avalon.
==Variants:==
The -2A Fusilier was designed to address the apparent lack of firepower in the
standard model. Pinard began by removing all weaponry of the original design
and re-installing a right hand actuator on the 'Mech.
Next, they added a Hyades Weapons Consortium Havoc Class 5 Light Autocannon
and a one-ton magazine (20 shots) to the right arm, keeping the same range and
endurance as the stock design. A Martin-Gordan Lance large laser was
installed in the right torso, providing yet more firepower at the same range
of the -1A, albeit divided among two seperate weapons.
For back-up, three Martin-Gordan Rapier medium lasers were installed: one
each in the center torso, left torso, and head. Anti-personnel capabilities
were addressed with the addition of a pair of Hyades Weapons Consortium Reaper
machine-guns in the left arm, along with a half-ton magazine (100 shots).
Eleven heat sinks were fitted to the design; enough to allow the -2A to run
and fire its long-range bracket, or walk and fire its short-range weapons plus
the Havoc; all without building up any excess overheat. Concerns did arise
with the possibility of TDF MechWarriors alpha-striking with their entire
arsenal--an event that could seriously overwhelm the heat dissipation system
of the Fusilier -2A.
The -3A was designed to address that concern. In this model, the
Martin-Gordan Lance large laser has been removed, along with one of the 11
heat sinks, leaving just the standard 10. A second HWC Havoc LAC-5 has been
installed in the right torso, along with a one-ton ammunition bin. All other
weapons remain the same as the -2A. This design will slightly overheat if
all weapons are used at once, but nowhere near the amount of the -2A.
==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:==
Cornet Khalid Ali claims direct descent from the legendary 20th Century boxer
Muhammed Ali. While the claim may be impossible to prove, his skills in the
ring give some merit to that boast. For the past four years, Cornet Ali has
won the TDF Golden Gloves Championship, defeating his opponents with fancy
footwork and devastating blows from his right fist. The young officer as been
fested twice as a personal guest of the Protector after each of his last two
victories.
On the battlefield, the boxer pilots a well-used FSL-1A Fusilier that he has
named Butterfly. Preferring physical combat to weapons fire, Khalid has
perfected using his ancestors rope-a-dope style while piloting Butterfly on
the battlefield. While his gunnery skills are barely adequete, Cornet Ali has
become one of the finest 'Mech pilots in the entire TDF and is capable of
making Butterfly perform maneuvers that many observers and design engineers
swear are impossible.
==Deployment==
The stock model -1A is commonly encountered in TDF medium-weight lances,
teamed up with Taurus Territorial Predators and Typhoons. The -2A and -3A
variants are seen much less often in the ranks of the TDF regular formations,
but may be found among noble's regiments, mercenary formations, and some
garrison units.
Conversely, the -1A has had very few units exported, while the -2A and -3A
have been heavily marketed to other Periphery powers and the Inner Sphere.
Here, it is the stock model that is the rarity, while the latter variants are
encountered much more often (although they are still classified as uncommon).
