The World's Biggest Non-Existent Space Battle
« on: February 18, 2013, 08:46:18 AM »

I'm a little surprised nobody is talking about this one. I thought this was both brilliant and horrifying. This is exactly the kind of thing that makes gaming fascinating.

Ever wanted to see 222 spaceships die in a video game? Now you can. My recommendation is to watch the lower of the two videos on that link. It gives a great view of seeing this thing develop and go completely downhill.

So, if you don't know EVE online, this will seem a little nuts. But this isn't actually the first time something like this has happened. It is the first time it happened by accident...between two nominal allies. 400 to 700 billion in-game currency is the current damage estimate, with somewhere around 222 dead ships. Additionally, the folks over at Checkpoint (go to 2:30 if you want to hear the whole story and the background of what happened) have mentioned that translating to real-world dollars, the Something Awful affiliated guild and the Reddit affiliated guild manage to waste over $20,000 in a single monolithic space battle. Many of the ships you are seeing there take months of gameplay time. Not as in "you play for a bunch of months." As in, you have clocked months worth of hours in this game for just this one ship. It is completely insane, completely awesome, and one of the cooler parts of seeing how games can showcase the complexities and foibles of human interaction.

You know there is something wrong with the FWL, when Word's spell check changes Impavido to Impetigo and Zechetinu to Secretion.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I don't know about a waste. I think it's actually rather cool. Game communities are modeling human cultural behavior, and that's a great thing for social sciences. Additionally, it's fun for armchair generals like ourselves. But setting all of that aside, it's rather cool for the EVE community at large (to be fair, I'm not a part of that community). Their system is working and producing some spectacular results. I'm always happy to see gaming communities in a working environment. While it may not contribute as much to science as say the CDC/World of Warcraft plague scenario, it still does provide a lot of data for people to use, if desired.

I think its great if I'm honest.  When playing games that take forever to build things up it can be very tempting to sit on your laurels and lord over the little folk only using your new toys against smaller pray.

This one, someone made a mistake and they went all out to get them back they didn't just cut losses and run.  Unfortunately it seems they had little planning for their rescue and it was haphazard.

What really impresses me and should make the people who developed EVE is they have a game and community that is so vibrant not only do they have that may people willing to work together and spend all that time and money building up their fleets they don't just cruise around the cosmos talking they use the game and their alliances to their full and go all out.

Although I said "hit the reset button" I bet you every player got back onto building more ships the next day - now that's impressive
