Mayonnaise?  I said German, not French.  Or   Canadian.  They put that stuff on French fries for crying out loud.

Uhh...there's a whole lot of Americans who put that stuff on french fries. There's an entire city of them not far from me. It's known as Filthadelphia AKA the City of Brotherly "I'm the Mayor and I'm Going to Firebomb Your Dirty Hippy Asses! And the Rest of this damn neighborhood!" Love.

Calling of Schwarzburg citiziens will depend on the fact in which city they lived because for this time you as an citizien weren´t called new yorker or Hamburger (when you lived in the state there not the city:).

So here it would be helpfull to know where you great-grandfather has lived in which city.

The calling somebody like you said (i.e. Prussians, bavarian, and so on) was used for the bigger states. So it might be possible that the Schwarzenburg-Sonderhausen people where called Schwarzenburgers from others, but it could also be that they were called Sonderhauseners then. The second one would also make more sence since there where 2 principialties with Schwarzenburg in its name and you can call them both Schwarzenburgers.
But as I said before the Peoples where rather called after their city name not the state name.

I'm so, so sorry. That's an experience no one should have to repeat. But on the bright side, at least you weren't visiting family in Jersey.

Thanks for the help, Manne.  After doing some more digging today on ancestry.com I think I've finally discovered where my great grandfather was from.  First, my family always thought his middle name was Trygve but on his naturalization papers he signed it Trango.  Second, we never even knew what his parent's names were.  In his 1930 obituary I found mention of a sister in Denmark, Wisconsin but no name.  Through my digging I found her and his mother, Elisabeth.  That was how I found out they were from Schwarzburg (listed as Schwartzburg in the 1880 US census).  Today, basically by luck, I found a ship manifest (in German) that listed Elisabeth travelling with a son named Trangott.  There hometown was listed as Herschdorf, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.  So one family mystery down.  Now I just have to make contact with someone in a town of around 900 that speaks English.  Or maybe someone on this site? ;D

Try getting in touch with the town council and if you need help with German, I can always help you (as can others on this site).

Thanks, Ice.  I'll have to type something up and email it to the local council, town church (according to the Catholic encyclopedia pretty much everyone in Schwarzburg was Lutheran at the time I'm looking at), and any German speakers on the site for free translation services. ;). And in the future I'll be willing to offer my services to translate English-English into American-English or American-English into Southern-English.

P.S.  Now I'm not sure if his middle name was Trangott, like I originally thought, or Traugott.  Trangott appears to be a German surname while Traugott seems to be a German given name.  This is the problem dealing with handwritten original documents.  Its very easy to turn an n into a u or vice versa.

Don't tell me. It is how my last name came to be.

Achtung Ice, I just sent you an email.  I don't know if you still use that account, the one with the name of the spectral ursa clan in it, but that's where it went.

I really like the way you speak; Spectral ursa is really a nice idea.
