Curious questions by Hessian
« on: April 10, 2010, 03:09:48 PM »

As was the case on the old forums I will from time to time ask questions on how certain things are done in different countries or how others feel on certain topics or what experiences others have made.

Now for the first question(and one that affects me quite a bit):
Daylight Savings time.  :-\
Each spring after daylight savings time is implemented i need some time to adjust to the new setting(and not just one or two days like most other people I know). While this year it took me only about one and a half weeks to adjust, it usually takes longer, about three to four weeks. During this adjustment time I am really tired and do not sleep very well in addition to feeling a bit dizzy.
With the reverse change in fall I have no problems at all though.

So what experiences have others made?

Ciao

Well I hate the new daylight savings time that came to America only a few years ago. I don't like waking up pre-dawn something that really bothers me.

Losing the hour of sleep in spring affects me for about a few days until I get me sleep patterns back. For most of my life I didn't have to worry about it because the state of Arizona, where I used to live, along with Hawai'i do not observe Daylight Savings time. ;D I'm just glad when it happens, as I hate the lack of sun in the winter. >:(

It feels strange to be suddenly one hour earlier or later but I really don't care about it and my body adapts itself quickly and easily.

@Hessian: Jet-lag from intercontinental flights affects me like this sometimes - going west is worse than going east.

The Eastern states in Australia all seem to like it...except that is, the Queenslanders.  You seppos have the south, we have the North as our, how shall I say this, less socially current, perhaps.  Queensland is a bit like the Periphery, founded by people who could not fit into main stream colonial society for social, economic, political, religious or whatever reasons and were none to taken with higher authority.  Like the Periphery, they are fircely proud of what they call "real" values, that amount to what the more socially progressive would call, quaint, old fashinoned or just plain bigotted.

So anything the southern states do, the complete opposite is done by Queensland - Daylight savings, rail guages, washing etc.  So even today, the far more decentralised Queensland is afraid that DLS will wake the cows up too early - no seriously, the excuse has been used - so the entire east cost has to deal with thier lack of team play.  For those like me who work close to and across the QLD border, its a Royal PAIN in the Ass.  The Federal Government then threw out the red rag by declaring that they would mandate DLST.  Wow, that really upset the Queenslanders.

However, I love DST, long lazy summer evening where you can play footy or cricket on the beach, sit out on the pubs verandah, or when you have to get up early and drive long distance, the road is dark and quite as all the idiots are still in bed.

Is it possible inside one country? Over one continent I can understand and find examples of it but one country?

Australia was founded as seperate colonies, first NSW.  That was pretty much all of the continent bar West Australia.  Victoria broke away, as did Qld, the Swan River colony later became the nucleus of West Australia.  Oh, and there's that funny little place down south, called Tasmania or something.

Anyway, each Colony had its own colonial government and the race was on to see who was biggest and best.  And, like a bunch a squabbeling idots, everyone worked as a team and did things ther own way.  Caused all sorts of problems that are still screwing things up today.  At Federation (1901) much power remained in the hands of the states - Police, education, health, planning etc. with the army and forign policy along with overall economic guidance left to the top.  So we have 20+ million people and three layers of government - local, state (old colonies) and Federal.  ITS A NIGHTMARE!

Only in the last decade has any real progress been made in Federaliation of the red tape brigade.  Simple things like OH&S standards for the country or getting a licence or building a house still arn't fixed.

Then there is daylight savings...

Oh, and the most curious thing, at Federation we gave the New Zealanders and open invitation to join us whenever they liked.  Lucky for World Rugby that they turned us down.
