FIFA World Cup 2010
« on: June 04, 2010, 03:09:17 PM »

So i thought i would start a thread on the world cup in South Africa which starts next friday.

With one week to go both England and the Ivory Coast suffered serious injury blows losing Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba respectivley. Although Drogba isn't confirmed as being out of the world cup it is hard to see him playing with a broken arm. Central Defender Michael Dawson is due to fly out of England for South Africa tonight to replace Ferdinand tonight.

Truth be told, losing Rio isn't such a big deal. We're still week in the mid-field IMO and in goal. I'll tell you what, the USA game is going to be mighty interesting. (Well, assuming their last tuner doesn't cause any major injuries)

Still, saddest news comes from Germany - who just can't seem to catch a break. Sooo many injuries.

Yeah poor Germany  ::)

I wonder if Carragher will get the nod to partner Terry at center Back, kinda hoping James doesn't get the start in Goal, think i'd rather see Joe Hart there.

It makes sense to pair Carragher with Terry, but I'm fairly certain James is going to start. Still, it'll be interesting to see how Gerrard and Lampard work with Rooney. I was a little surprised that England would still invite Crouch, but with his height I guess he's almost a shoe-in until he retires from the sport.

I'd also add I'd like to see Milner get a start over Carrick or Cole. He played his ass off for Villa this season. He'd probably bring quite a bit to the big show.

Yeah poor Germany  ::)

Well the losses of Michael Ballack(team captain) and Rene Adler(first choice keeper) due to injuries aren't exactly insignificant.
Heiko Westermann and Christian Träsch might be relatively unknown but versatile teamplayers so their losses due to injuries are unfortunate too.
But hey, you make do with what you have.

I am not really into football these days.
I realised a few days ago that I hardly knew three names of the French team and one of them is not on the playfield.  ::)

I don't think Germany will advance past the quarters. They have a decent Group, but I don't expect much now. Sorry Hessian.

Once upon a time, I really liked football but I lost interest (too much money involved I think).

And for expectations, whose expectations? Those of the French? those of the French team? those of the bookmakers? mine?

Hmmmm....
If I'd have to make a bet I'd say quarter-/ or perhaps semifinals. However, in my opinion this is going to be a learning tournament for the youngest German Team in quite some time.
But all those youngsters(Badstuber,Boateng,Kroos,Marin,Özil,Thomas Müller) need to gain more experience on an international level. Once they have gained that experience a lot of things are possible in the future.

Once again if I'd have to make a bet I think that my favorites are currently The Netherlands and Spain.

But of course I hope the "Nationalmannschaft" advances as far as possible.

Ciao
Hessian

P.S.: I wouldn't mind if Gary Lineker's famous saying “Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win” came true though. ;D

The French public's and press.

I see Arjien Robbin is out of the world cup now for the dutch and Jon Obi Mikel for the Nigerians.

The French public's and press.

Not high as people don't understand what the trainer intents to do.
It is well known that in France, each French is a national trainer and has ideas on what to do and how to do it.

Same as here then, 50 odd million english people and we all have our own opinion on how the team should play.
