Looking for cool weapon ideas
« on: March 17, 2011, 09:50:54 AM »

Okay, here's the thought - there's nothing new under the sun, however I'm looking for ideas on cool weapons which can be mounted on Mecha or added to Armour. I want to include it in one of my stories and thought you guys could well give me some ideas.

It could either be a type of missile, round or an actual installed weapons system. I'm trawling the web for ideas, but thought I could save some ground by asking the question. ;D

Cheers

In an old episode of modern weapons, I believe it was a missile or artillery round that exploded into hot copper chunks that could absolute shred modern armor, and "crit-seek" fuel and ammo.  Much like a LB-X missile or artillery round.  Might be an interesting fluff piece for Arrow IV missiles.

Another cool one, is airburst links on grenades.  You can have them detonate in the air, just over enemy cover, maximizing the kill zone (since its not shooting half it's load into the ground).

For crowd control, microwave weaponry seems pretty intense.  They actually shot the host with it.  Said it felt like a sunburn with fire ants on your skin.

I like the idea of the airburst grenages, maybe mixed with hot copper chunks. Sounds like an excellent way of clearing an infantary charge 8)

Now microwave weaponry - intense enough to cook flesh in a battle suit - hmm - right wavelength and parboiled soldier ;)

This is not a realistic weapon...but I was just thinking it would be awesome to be able to shoot fireballs.  Maybe some sort of semi-solid gel globs that are ignited on the way out of the gun, continue to burn due to the oxygen, and then stick to the target.  Not useful in non-oxygen atmospheres (or lack of atmosphere).

Okay, Inferno missiles follow that sort of logic. Gel which sticks to Mechs and ignites. As a phosphorous based weapon, which ignites on contact with air, and where there is history, it might be a goer. What scenario would you see it in?

I suppose anti-infantry? What might be cooler would be one that is a mix, i.e. dual shock. A round which pierces armour and deploys inflammable material on entering the armour? Would that work?

You're right on the lack of oxygen for space or non-oxygen atmosphere planets, but there could be other chemical rounds for other atmospheres which would have the same effect? Or a round containing oxygen cylinders which gave a local flammable atmosphere? Don't know how effective that would be.

Still like the microwave idea, and of course shrapnel. Effective and bloody ;D

In the BT universe, they have the plasma rifle.  I guess I'm just taking a spin off that.  The gel glob, could be ball shaped.  But depending on how you program the barrel, you can change it into a long string to mow down infantry, a grid shaped net-like form to improve accuracy while decreasing overall "damage".

I do like the inferno round that pierces, then explodes, burning up all the soft stuff inside armored targets.

Me too - a sort of double Sabot round - AP, explosive and flammable?

Sounds good to me.  Can't see why you couldn't have both.

I'm also a big fan of Fletteche-style weapons. They have this terrible shredding quality that I just find fascinating. While Fletteche weapons in BT lack the penetrating power (Because of the Plastic Polymer ammunition block) of standard or AP rounds, there's nothing to say you can't produce a Fletteche weapon with better punch - I think in 40K the Tau use one capable of simply chewing up infantry en-masse.

I've also always enjoyed the whole "Gauss Flayer" weapons employed by the Necron. It's a weapon that literally flays its target one cellular layer at a time. Nasty stuff.

Either of those would make for a lovely addition to your death dealer.

Yeah. I like flechette weapons. I invented one for the third SD book, A Leap of Faith. It was a pistol weapon used by the Shran. It fired almost like a bola, connected by micro-fine filaments which expanded and shredded the opposition.

I'm looking for something different for Book V. SO right now all suggestions are welcome. I do like the idea of an armour-piercing round with a flammable after shock, though.

I'd forgotten about the Gauss Flayer weapon, food for thought.

What I'm looking for is a crew-served weapon, or a weapons system applicable to Mecha as I have a particular use in mind ;D

What about maybe some guide-by-wire ballistics or missiles?  Or pull something from the NARC system, a little beacon that attaches to the target, and you can pepper them with your sobot armor pierce and flame mini-missile?

...Let me check my AU stuff.

Ok...  150-ton 6-leggers, 200-ton 8-leggers, Permanent AirMechs (designed as a lifting body), twin-engined FighterShips (assault small craft), 10-19 ton Extra-Light Mechs (a mixed-tech IS protomech concept), Mech hardpoints, Stilts, armor rescue pods (armor crew protective gear), ER-TAG, cassette missile system (a missile-carrier replacement, my favorite.  2-32 SRMs/Turn, 1 Turn to reload, uses SRM/LRM/MRM/ELRM and every type of ammo not dependent on equipment slaved to the launcher, like artemis and streak.)

Portable turrets, Point C-cubed system (2 units, able to expand up to 5 max), jumpship defense pods (think a naval PPC in a defense station with a docking collar), cap missile satellites for pirate-point defense (nukes, of course)...

I have the rules for most of it written out if you want it.  I had more, but I'm not working on the unique technology segment for a while.  I get a bigger kick out of writing the fluff.  Latest idea; "Alteration".  Memory implanting and brainwashing.

All sounds good and the info would be useful to peruse.

I do like your latest idea of "alteration" - memory implants and brainwashing would lead to a good story-line. I'm thinking captured troops, brainwashed for action against their Lords and Masters. Struggling against their conditioning...hmm. 8)

...I was going through FM:U, and thinking about how they had the option to raise fanatical troops.  Alteration will involve alpha-numeric passcodes, the use of which will put the owner in a fugue (?) state, ready for instruction and handling, and trigger (false) memory.

I was thinking about asking people on the board to submit storylines and then pick the winner for a short story, then wrote an outline myself highlighting its use.  IlKhan dies, new IlKhan begins reading military portions of the FM entries, realizes he needs to read the fluff for political reasons and restarts, then reaches the Silver Condor report (and the Intelligence report), and realizes they use of brainwashing, torture, and worse.

Another intel group intervenes (with coffee and danish!), the agent stops a coup attempt, explains the use of it, reveals he is one, that he has a "perfect life" outside of work because of it (hot wife, mistress, perfect kids), talks some more and leaves.   Ilkhan reads their report, and one on him, leans back, says HIS a/n code, falls asleep at his desk...

...And wakes up with the 'memories' of 6 (?) IlKhans, including Sara McEvedy, the founder of the NC.  Its all faded, but recoverable with use - it gives him a guideline for the development of the NC, and he calls in the agent, accusing him of misusing NC funds and hands him a $100 for the 'bet' he lost (the new IlKhan read his own code within a day of taking office).  Agent laughs, puts his feet up, and they talk more about Alteration, spelling out the implications.  Turns out most of the high ranking military officers have it as a check to their ambitions, and some members of the Burrocks.

...Perfectly controlled willing puppets...  Explains so much!  Wander over to the Countdown to the New Clans thread, I'll repost the Unique Tech segment.

Will have a look.

I just thought of a potential add-on - a taser-type weapon which lobotomises. Swift indoctrination and voila, mindless troops.

Hey, I love this thread ;D
