Robotech Kickstarter!
« on: April 18, 2013, 01:23:26 PM »

Not sure how you can't love Robotech and enjoy Battletech, so here is the kickstarter:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rrpgt/robotech-rpg-tacticstm

Basically you get a bunch of "Stingers" and "Wasps", in all 3 models, with a Rifleman/Warhammer, all plastic and poseable, for like $80... oh, and a dozen battle pods and a Marauder.

Not real hopeful the game won't suck, looks like its just another stupid mongoose/BFG/Clickytech dumbed down game, but the miniatures would motivate me to finish my Silhouette conversion (same engine used by DP9 stuff, where the pilot quality *really* matters, and things can die with 1 shot).

Looks like it's already gone past its funding goal, which leaves the stretch goals to be considered between now and the day it's locked in.

I would like it if there was a way to do minis based on units from Macross Frontier. By saying that, I'm not suggesting that Frontier should be shoe-horned into Robotech, but rather that a game drawing on those designs (as a "Macross" game, as opposed to a strictly "Robotech" one) could be interesting were it legally possible.

But I'm somewhat conflicted on the idea of using these minis as Unseen. At one point, I might have been more open to the idea personally, but I find myself preferring each universe these designs have had a legacy in (to also include Transfomers, where a VF-1 ended up as the original version of Jetfire) to concentrate on units which are designed from the ground up to fit into, and work with, the conceits and peculiarities of each respective universe.

(To put it another way, I would prefer BattleTech to turn to "home-spun" designs like the Mark 1 LAMs, or "native" 'Mechs like the Savage Wolf, rather than get too hung up as a franchise over the Unseen.)

That said, I can understand why people want to use these as Unseen; and I wouldn't be surprised if someone painted up a "Jetfire" at some point, too.

If I were to give money to Palladium it would mean I was giving money to Harmony Gold and that is something that I cannot do. Harmony Gold is the EVIL and EVIL must die.

honestly contributing to anything that makes Harmony Gold's Liscence a success is something that damages the battletech property IMO, even if I was a robotech fan (I am not really) I would not support this.

Considering the Unseen are never coming back, it's the best path to old style models.

Pretty easily. I found Robotech's setting to be a bit too naive and vaguely insulting. Setting sells these games for me. I have no real ties to Robotech simply because of Wasps and Stingers and the rest. Also...Harmony Gold. No thanks. But the biggest one? Kevin S of Palladium has pulled some pretty craptacular things towards the fan base and the gaming community over the years. I'll definitely pass. I'll wish them well, but I'll pass.

And people who are still caught up in the Unseen and still wanting them need to accept the way things are and start using the ReSeen. I know I have. I haven't bought an Unseen since before the Reseen came out.

actually it has nothing to do with unseen Vs reseen for me, I love project phoenix UNIVERSALLY.

I see Robotech as a threat to the franchise as a whole, and it's US distribution rights need to be removed entirely for a period of time.  Battletech fans clinging to the unseen are undermining the Battletech Franchise, with or without Catalyst Game Labs guiding it.

Funny, I agree completely, but completely think the same thing of Battletech :)

I've already pledged $1200 to the game, and could do quite a bit more.  Robotech is the reason I ever played Battletech.  If I stopped doing business with companies I thought were unethical, well, I'd be amish... actually, I'd be dead, as hospitals are the worst of them all.

However, perhaps I should have sold my regiment+ of unseens (mostly LAMs) before this kickstarter started seeing them worth $4 each.

I haven't played BT in a few years for various reasons, I'm hoping if I show up at a gaming store with 250 mecha from the new Robotech game, I can find some players.

I will say this, the market on several unseens will tank after this,  I have seen pics of the Tomahawk and Defender minis alongside the plastic Premium Thor and Lokis (Which are 1:1 scale with the metal)

the Warhammer, Rifleman, Longbow, Archer, Phoenix Hawk LAM, Phoenix Hawk itself and Marauder are gonna be suddenly much more accessable for the Grognards who are increasingly having difficulty with scarce miniatures that have retained quality.

I'd agree. I've found recent improvements on the 3145 side to at least bring me back after an extended break. I'd also agree on having to pick your battles with unethical companies. Thankfully, this is a battle I can pick and it doesn't have quite the same impact on my life as avoiding all hospitals.

It also isn't very hard to convert Battletech miniatures to their system.  Pretty easily actually, and could be an alternative to Alpha Strike for folks that just want to put minis on a table, and throw dice and taunt their opponent, without giving the game much thought.

Well I went ahead and gave in supporting this, not cause of the potential for using thier minis as unseen replacements, but because I am actually pretty interested in this game itself, after watching the video.

I will admit though that a few of the minis will go towards Battletech endeveours... just how it is.

They've passed one million US dollars, with just over a day to go.

It would be interesting to find out how much of that finding is "Macross money" (from people who prefer the Japanese Macross franchise), how much is "Robotech money" (from those who are interested in Harmony Gold's iteration), and how much is "Unseen money" (or any combination of the above).
