Science Fiction Hobby Games: A First Survey
« on: June 01, 2013, 12:32:29 PM »

There was a news article on another site for a new book called Science Fiction Hobby Games: A First Survey. Apparently, this book analyses the history of a number of tabletop and RPG sci-fi universes. (There's a table of contents on the publisher's website; BattleTech is listed as one of the wargames covered, alongside currently-supported titles like Star Fleet Battles, and now-defunct games like Renegade Legion.)

Interestingly enough, the front cover shows a series of different-sized star clusters, each meant to represent a certain game setting; one of which (the one featuring Terra, no less) is marked as the Inner Sphere itself.

Has anyone here heard of this book, or has any idea as to how it portrays the games listed therein (such as BT and SFB)?

t seems that much of the data in the book might be from this website, which has an article for BattleTech that may or may not be the same as the entry for BT in the book itself.

Haha, The Creature That Ate Sheboygan! I've played the magazine version of that.

I haven't heard of this book but its sample entry for Traveller looks identical to the sf-encyclopedia entry, so imagine BT and SFB will be the same. The author seems to be a bigger fan of BattleTech than Star Trek though (the Inner Sphere is central to the massive crossover campaign implied on the cover, Federation isn't even there) so maybe the BT entry will have some extra content added.

EDIT: beat to the punch! That's what I get for taking my time.  ;D
