I should have started this thread with some of this information but would still like to get opinions on the topic.
HISTORY
The history of the Hellenic Republic is not as long as that of the Great Houses but is a continuation of the Rim World Republics history before the strife caused by the Amaris Dynasty.
The Betrayals
Starting with the Manchester Directive, which outlawed membership in the Rim Republic Army, Members of the former government and military, started planning the overthrow of the Amaris family. When RRA members on Apollo started the unauthorized worker strike in April 2575, planning the overthrow took a back seat to survival. Jason Alexander, a high-level RRA diplomat was watching a news vid broadcast of the workers strike on Apollo, he knew that he would have to do something to prevent the loss of life that he saw coming.
With the help of his aide Rolando Adame they notified as many friends and family as they could that they were going to leave the Rim World Republic. Over the next 4 years they stock piled supplies and equipment and in August of 2579, 1,640,000 members of the RRA and their families gathered around the planet Quelimane in fully loaded dropships and jumpships.
They started their journey, thru unknown space. The Journey took them 4 jumps and 6 weeks. They jumped into a system with 15 planets orbiting a yellow star. Only 5 of those planets were close to being habitable. Using Hector Rowe’s vision of ancient Greece, Jason Alexander created the new society along the same lines with significant differences. After unloading all of the supplies and material they brought with them, Jason divided the people into thirteen groups.
He also assigned a dropship to each group so that they would have transportation and a source of power until they established their colony. The rest were used to travel back and forth to Quelimane and other worlds in the Rim Worlds Republic to bring additional material and refugees back. A jumpship was used to explore the surrounding space for additional planets to colonize. Once each colony was established, Jason set about creating the government and the society that would build itself into the Hellenic Republic.
The first 30 years were turbulent for the republic until the colonies were firmly established. With established trade developed between the groups and an abundance of material was available for trade off world. Jason sent additional dropships and jumpships to establish contacts and gather intelligence on the current situation in the RWR and the Star League.
Once the colonies were established and light industries were in place, Jason started seeking volunteers to establish colonies on other worlds within one jump of their current planet. By 2583, nine other planets were colonized, 3 in the current star system and 6 in five other star systems. These colonies were well provided for from stock piles of material and food from Macedonia.
In 2596, word reached Jason that the Rim Provisional government surrendered, so he ordered all trading contact broken off from the RWR until an assessment could be made of the RWR and it’s roll in the future of the people of the Hellenic Republic. Established contacts in the AsRoc helped keep Jason and the Hellenic government informed of all events taking place in the Inner Sphere.
Equipment, material, and personnel continued to flow into the republic; mining operations had begun on many of the inhabitable planets surrounding Macedonia. One of Macedonia’s moons was hollowed out from the mining operations and ship repair yards were constructed inside. These yards were used to repair the fleet of jumpships and dropships, they were later expanded to repair and construct warships.
Amaris Coup
During the Amaris coup and the RWR occupation of the Terran Hegemony, the Hellenistic Republic gained many scientist, teachers, and families who were smuggled out of the Hegemony to the Hellenistic Republic. At first there was a struggle to convince them of their fate until they witnessed friends and colleagues slaughtered by the RWR forces. Shipments of war materials that were shipped back to the RWR were redirected to the republic by dropship and jumpship crews who knew about the republic or were part of the republic.
Sociopolitical Structure
The Hellenic Republic operates under a semi-presidential constitutionally bonded system of government.
The Preodros is a hereditary position passed down from father to son. The Preodros holds absolute power over the government and military but refrains from using that power unless he feels whatever action being proposed is detrimental to the way of life for all of the citizens. The Preodros is the only one who can approve any changes to the constitution.
The Ephors are the heads of government who see to the day to day running of the government. Currently there are five Ephor positions, all nominated by the Gerousia but elected by the Apella. Ephor may only serve 2 ten year terms of office after which they may continue to serve the government in an advisory capacity or retire to a land grant anywhere in the republic.
The Gerousia is made up of one elected individual from each planet in the republic. They are elected by the Apella of each planet.
The Apella consists of all citizens age 30 and above.
Constitution
The following articles highlight the Hellenic Republic Constitution, a full copy is available for review at the capital.
Part One: Basic Provisions.
Section I – Form of Government
Article 1
1. The form of government of the Hellenic Republic is that of a semi-presidential constitutionally bonded system.
2. Except for the Proedros, All powers derive from the People and exist for the People and the Nation; they shall be exercised as specified by the constitution.
Section II – Relations of Church and State
Article 3
1. There shall be no prevailing religion in the Hellenic Republic; the church and state shall remain as separate identities.
Part Two: Individual and Social Rights.
Article 4
1. All Hellenic citizens are equal before the law.
2. Hellenic Men and Women have equal rights and equal obligations.
3. Every Hellenic citizen capable of bearings arms is obligated to contribute to the defense of the nation as provided by law.
4. All Hellenic citizens at 18 must serve three years in the active military.
5. Hellenic citizens will contribute without distinction to public charges in proportion to their means.
Article 5
1. All persons shall have the right to develop freely their personality and to participate in the social, economic and political life of the nation, insofar as they do not infringe the rights of others or violate the Constitution and the good usages.
2. All persons living in the Hellenic Republic shall enjoy full protection of their life, honor and liberty irrespective of race, language and religious or political beliefs. Exceptions shall be permitted only in cases permitted by law.
Part Three: Organization and Functions of the Nation.
Section I – Structure of the Nation
Article 26
1. The executive powers shall be exercised by the Proedros of the Republic.
2. The legislative powers shall be exercised by the Ephor and Gerousia of the government.
3. The judicial powers shall be exercised by courts of law, the decisions of which shall be executed in the name of the Hellenic citizens.
Article 27
1. Foreign military forces are not acceptable on Hellenic Republic territory, nor may they remain in or traverse it, except as provided by law passed by an absolute majority of the total numbers of members of the Gerousia.
Article 29
1. Manifestations of any nature whatsoever in favor of political parties by judicial functionaries, the military in general, members of the security corps and public servants, as well as the active support in favor of a party by employees of public law legal persons, public enterprise and local government agencies are absolutely prohibited.
Section II – The Proedros of the Hellenic Republic
Article 30
1. The Proedros shall monitor and regulate the functions of all the institutions of the Republic.
Article 45
1. The Proedros is the commander in chief of the Nations Armed Forces, the command of which may be exercised by the Government, as specified by law. The Proedros shall also confer ranks on those serving within, as specified by law.
Religion and Philosophy
The Hellenic people practice a wide variety of religions, none of which are elevated to the point of being the national religion. Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam are the four major faiths practiced across the Hellenic Republic.
Socioeconomics
During the intervening years between the birth of the Hellenic Republic and the fall of the Star League, the republic gained much in the way of technology, science, culture, education, and information from the Inner Sphere and the Star League. Jason Alexander and his contacts throughout the Rim Worlds Republic; infiltrated many of the Star Leagues main suppliers as well as the Bureau of Star League Affairs (BLSA). They copied and stored much of the electronic data stored on library cores from numerous sources. This data was transferred back to the Republic.
During “Amaris†reign over the Star League additional equipment and personnel were squirreled away from the Inner Sphere.
