master arminas - RIP Melissa Steiner (3010-3027) « on: August 28, 2009, 01:40:40 PM »

I posted this back over on CBT forums, but since it deals with an alternative universe, I thought you guys might like to chime in.  Here it is, the game-changer of all game-changers:

Quote
In the thread 'What Would You Change' by Maelwys, I had a sudden epithany.  What if the Kell Hounds failed to save Melissa Steiners life from the ISF and Genyosha back in 3027 after the Maskirovka arranged her kidnapping?

She dies, leaving the Lyran Commonwealth without an Heir--and Hanse Davion without a bride.  What would result from this?

Gentlemen, let's discuss and debate.

Well no 2nd regiment of the Kell Hounds for sure. While there is likely a retaliation factor which might spark an immediate war against the Combine it is difficult to say how successful this operation might have been since it is more a reaction than a well planned offensive. Also that war aftermath might be far different given Melissa's ability to play peacemaker so effectively. I can think of the Tamar - Rasalhague difficulties she overcame which might not be so easily dealt with. The Federated Commonwealth as a co-mingled super state would be dead on arrival but an alliance might endure in some lesser form right up to the Clan invasion.

But she was captured by Heimdall, strange things going around.

What about Katrina proclaiming Hanse as her heir or marrying him?

It's stated, by a character in a novel so possibly with bias, that Katrina Steiner was too old to give Hanse an heir - all important since he was not yet sure of Morgan Hasek-Davion's loyalties.

If they intend to continue with a marriage alliance, then the next most likely candidate for Hanse's bride would be Lisa Steiner II, daughter of Nondi Steiner and therefore Katrina's niece. It is unlikely that Nondi would favour the arrangement though.

I read somewhere that two married foxes would not have gone well together (ie they were both too cunning for the good of the other one).
