Forging the Southern Cross
« on: January 17, 2013, 08:11:18 PM »

Hello, everyone!  Today, I have a community group world-building exercise for us to polish up our skills on.  I will set the basic parameters of the exercise, but it will be up to YOU to flesh out this new realm.  By which I mean history, military forces, planets, industry, anything you might want to add . . . the sky is the limit.

First, we need a name for our new little home . . . and I just so happen to have one handy to suggest (if you folks don’t care for it, that can be changed):  the Commonwealth of the Southern Cross.

Okay, back story.  In the first years of James McKenna’s rule over the Terran Hegemony, a group of discontented individuals decided to make their own go.  Loading up some ships, they embarked outwards, passing by Circinus and New St. Andrews and leaving them in their wake.  Their company was led by a man named Alex Cross, an native of Earth (Australia, to be precise).  Many jumps (how far YOU will determine) past New St. Andrews, Cross and his followers found a cluster of stars, including several perfect for settlement.

The initial world to be settled was named Perth, after the city of Alex Cross’s birth.  Perth would become by the time of our story the capital of the CSC.

For more than century, the colonists were on their own; struggling at times, but they weren’t a failed colony by any means.  In fact, they had already colonized several of the surrounding worlds when an SLDF exploration vessel discovered them in 2712.  Contact was established and (unlike their forefathers), the men and women of the Commonwealth jumped at the chance to forge relations with those they left so long ago.

The SLDF eventually established a small garrison and set up a communications lane; they also helped develop the colony worlds (which began to receive new colonists, sometimes unwilling colonists).

However, the increasing tensions in the Periphery (and the discovery of the location of the Southern Cross by House Amaris) led to extremely violent pirate raids from 2743 to 2749.  In response, Simon Cameron ordered the secret formation of a new SLDF Corps (a small one) and Fleet to provide the CSC with a means of combating these pirates.

LXXIII Corps was formed up from personnel scrounged from existing units in 2745 and arrived on station in 2747 . . . and they put a quick end to the violent raids.  But then Simon Cameron died in 2751, and things took a turn for the worse.

Isolated so far beyond the Rim Worlds Republic, the CSC contact with the Star League was often interrupted, and valuable supplies captured en route by unknown (at the time) hostile forces.  And the escalation in the Periphery states grew ever more violent.  General Kerensky almost recalled LXXIII Corps at the start of the Periphery Uprising—but the CSC was attacked by nearly two divisions of rebels at the same time (Rim Worlds troops, actually).

Then the Coup happened.  General Zachary Montoya disregarded orders to return to the Inner Sphere—citing the damage wrought on the worlds of the Southern Cross by the sudden and extremely violent attack by those hostile Divisions.

Unable to impose his will upon them, Kerensky wrote the entire Corps off.

That is the bare-bones outline of this, gentlemen.  It is up to you to determine where this goes.  Here is what LXXIII Corps and the Southern Cross Expeditionary Fleet had at the time of the Amaris Coup:

LXXIII Corps

7th Mechanized Infantry Division (Lucky Seventh)
155th Royal BattleMech Brigade (Dixie Thunder)

*Denotes Squadron Flagship
**Denotes Fleet Flagship.

So, how does this evolve?  Where does the Southern Cross go?  It is up to YOU.  What I hope is that we can all add a little bit to this, our own ideas on different worlds, the government, the military, relations with the Inner Sphere, EVERYTHING.  From this sketch, where do we go?

ISP3 cited the Caesar's Bow was just beyond New St Andrews and featured several young stars potentially with habitable worlds that were waiting to be explored and exploited.

It's not too far into the black for the SLDF to have bothered with and just close enough for the Marians to perhaps have a little influence too.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

It would be a good idea to have some sort of fleet trains.

28th Support Squadron
Newgrange-Class Belfast*
Volga-Class Tchefuncte, Natalbany, Dugdemona, Ouachita
Carrack-Class (Sylvester) São Gabriel
Lola III-Class Ward, Helm

281st DropShip Squadron
Elephant-Class x 6
Mule-Class x 2

282nd DropShip Squadron
Avenger-Class x 4
Achilles-Class x 2
Titan x 2

283rd & 284th DropShip Squadrons
There are 30 Collars available.  I only specified 16.  I expect the rest will be Mules & Mammoths.  Maybe a Danais or two.  The Sylvester entry specifies the military Carrack is based off the Sylvester while the Clan's Carrack was a reduced armament version.

Once established within the Commonwealth, the SLDF Navy established a base in the outer reaches of the Perth System.  Named Port Jackson, the base was established in orbit around the small moon (Dundas) of Perth IX (Bathurst).  Port Jackson currently consists of two small Habitats (Andrew, Michael) and a small Unpressurized Yard (Cockatoo Island).  A single Capitol system defense station (Denison Station) has been emplaced to protect the base.  Components to construct another pair of Habitats and a second yard have been dispatched but the convoy is overdue.  A small base has been established on Dundas.  Named Fort Dundas, Support and Logistical elements of LXXIII Corps have been busy emplacing their required facilities.  The base also provides a secure base for the SLIC and (rumored) Special Forces element.

Assigned Forces:
628th Independent Aero Wing
1157th Marine Battalion (The Void Snipers)
Lola III-Class Walker, Mahan

Rear Admiral Jennifer McGrath commands the "tail" elements of the Corps.  A capable officer, she expects this to be her last posting before retirement and intends to leave a legacy of excellence behind.  She has been the driving force behind the effort to make LXXIII Corps as self-sufficient as possible.  Calling in all the favors owed, she has managed to established at least a cadre of all the various Operational and Support Commands and the Logistical Subcommands.  She is pushing her Quartermasters to locate and procure as much of the Corps' requirements within the Commonwealth as possible to mitigate the long and unreliable supply chains back to Twentieth Army.  The inability to replace the Royal's equipment is a critical priority.

Very brief, as in a hurry.

The home grown defence forces of the Commonwealth consist of two tiers, the Commonwealth Defence Force (CDF) and the Commonwealth Militia Forces (CMF).

A great rivalry exisits between the two groups, with the CDF calling the CMF "Chocolate Soldiers", as they are not real soldiers and the CMF calling the CDF "Deep Thinkers" as the militia believe they prefer to plan, rather than fight.

Neither force is particularily large, compared to LXXIII Corps, however, both are noted for the quality, doggedness and complete unruliness of their infantry forces.  Despite the SLDF's work, few men of the CDF/CMF have a lot of respect for the SLDF "Peacock" officers or the high tech "Geekentroopen" of the SLDF.

This attitude baffles the SLDF, but the SLDF has learnt to respect the CDF/CMF's combat abilities and tries to ignore its odd cultural mores and outlooks.

Add a little probably needs a bit of expansion.

The Churchill Defence League

Began as a quiet and unofficial militia from the early days formed to protect the small habitable moon of Churchill.  As time has progressed the League has changed with the arrival of the SLDF Garrison the militia realized their time was up.  Hijacking a pair of ancient Aquilla-class Transport JumpShips (James Cook and Matthew Flinders) that had been part of the original colonial element they disappeared from Churchill into the wastes of the Southern Cross area.

Since their disappearance from Churchill the Defence League have reappeared time and again.  Unfortunately the ideals of their beginning have been lost in the wastes, the Defence League are now little more than a terrorist organisation who believe the Star League Defence Force are an occupational force.  Armed with cast off weapons they would have little to no chance in a straight up fight against any of the SLDF units instead they concentrate on hit-and-run attacks against small units, terrorist bombs, driving up protests into riots and most recently bank robberies.

Because of their activities the CDL have become one of the SLDF's biggest problems and the focus of much of their recent cover and overt operations.  Of particular interest to the SLN's activities within the Southern Cross are the two Aquilla-class vessels which are still believed to be operational within the Wastes although they are almost never seen in public.

The Wastes

The Wastes are the Southern Crosses biggest failure, three planets in a single system.  Together they are surrounded in mystery as all records on their formation has been shrouded in mystery for decades or centuries.  From all accounts originally only one of the worlds was habitable known only as Sahara which had a small population.  The other two worlds which are really little more than moons were the Southern Cross Governments early attempt at terraforming which failed.  Now neither world is habitable instead filled with deadly radiation that also causes all sensor scans of the world to be reflected.  As a result anyone attempting to search the worlds are reduced to using a "Mark One Eyeball" technique which is both dangerous and time consuming.  It also makes both worlds perfect hiding places.

Because of the problems on the two moons Sahara's population has dwindled to a couple of thousand die hard occupants.  As the CDL is known to operate in the Wastes the SLDF have been known to operate covertly on Sahara, investigating the various activities of Sahara's population.  When these operations fail the SLDF's reputation on Sahara tales a serious hit driving further and further support towards the CDL.

Dunedin

Star (Recharge Time):  Stewart's Star (192 hours)
Star Type:  K1V
Number of Planets:  5 (including two gas giants)
Time to Jump Point:  6 days
Recharging Station:  Zenith

Planet:  Dunedin
Position:  2
Planet Type:  Rocky
Gravity:  1.03
Atmospheric Pressure:  Standard
Atmospheric Composition:  Nitrogren, Oxygen
Percent Surface Water:  86%
Percent, Level of Native Life:  80%, Mammals
Satellites:  1 (Lilith)
Population (2766):  114,000,000
Population (3025):  237,000,000
HPG Station:  Class B
Planetary Capital:  Half Moon Bay

Description:  Dunedin was the second world of the Southern Cross colonized following the settlement on Perth. Despite the age of this settlement, it population has never exceeded a quarter of a billion people,  partly because of the limited land area and strong storms powered by the open oceans.  Almost unique among the worlds surveyed by humanity, the seas of Dunedin have an exceptionally low level of salinity; making them (in effect) fresh water seas.  The abundance of drinkable water on this planet has make it a hectic Port of Call for any DropShips and JumpShips passing close to Stewart's Star.

Originally settled by colonists that originated in equal parts from New Zealand, Canada, Denmark, and New Caledonia, Dunedin has resisted industrialization beyound the absolute minimum.  It remains to this day a planet of incredible natural beauty, almost unspoiled by human hands.  Along with the pristine cold rain-forests (the largest continent is located in the planet's northern latitudes), a mostly agrarian mind-set has resulted in wide-spread farms and ranches.  Fishing is also a major industry.

There are a number of native species to Dunedin, but the largest are sea-dwellers, including over two hundred species of marine mammals.  Large land predators are almost unknown, but several small insect and reptile species are poisonous in nature; traveler's should be advised to research such in advance of any prolonged stay on Dunedin.  The most common transplanted species is the Dunedin sheep, which started out as genetically engineered domestic sheep.  However, the species on Dunedin soon began to exhibit their ancestors curled horns.  Carved and polished Dunedin horn is a major export, along with wool, produce, meat, and seafoods.

EDIT (to reflect Dragon Cat's creation of the CDL):  Politically, the natives of Dunedin are staunch supporters of the Commonwealth of the Southern Cross.  This has changed in recent years with the upsurge in violence by the terrorists of the CDL.  An attack on SLDF facilities in Half-Moon Bay resulted in the deaths of nearly two thousand civilians when a series of bombs outside the military reservation detonated.  Taken aback by the severity and callous nature of the assault, the people of Dunedin were incensed.  Local authorities have cracked down on CDL supporters and have instituted harsh regulations for visitors from both Churchill and Sahara.

Environmental regulations on Dunedin are also strongly engrained in the culture.  Any needless pollution of the enivornment is a serious offense (DropShip captains should take note that any discharge purges from waste and water systems are tested by the government; contamination results in a hefty fine, sometimes with confiscation of the ship in question and arrest of the ship's owners and crew).

Based off the SLDF Handbook, with the number of Independent Regiments assigned to the Corps, there must be a substantial number and some room between them.

But due to the limited numbers of colonists available at first, I am afraid they won't be able to expand much.
After that, it will depend of how much colonists are sent to the Southern Cross.

A few planets with 114,000,000 inhabitants seem a lot for it.

Dunedin is one of the Commonwealth's "garden" worlds.  If it were in the Inner Sphere, population would be 40-50 times as great.  What I am thinking is this:  only one or two billion+ populations, everything else in the 100s of millions (uncommon) or 10s of millions (common), or even smaller populations (VERY common).

So how many worlds/systems should the Confederation have?  A dozen?  Two dozen?  Forty?

The Amaris Embassy

Established in 2751, House Amaris established a small embassy with a much larger hidden intelligence presence from the Krypteia.

The Ambassador is Baroness Helene Dinesen.  Her family is a cadet branch of those Dinesens from the LC.  Ruthless, intelligent, and attractive, she is laying the foundation for eventual absorption of the Commonwealth by the RWR.  She knows this plan will not succeed without a regime change and a shift in the fundamental nature of the Commonwealth citizenry.

After negotiations with the Commonwealth, the embassy was allowed  a guard force consisting of a light 'Mech lance and a motorized infantry company from the 11th Amaris Fusiliers.  SLDF concerns about the size of the force were allayed by experience within the RWR that the Fusiliers were "typical" units and the 11th was barely above recruit status.  In actuality, the parent unit is the 11th Amaris Dragoons and its troopers are veterans of one or more nasty battles suppressing RRA elements or conducting "bandit raids".

SLIC has been looking into the activities of various merchants suspected of having ties to or being fronts for House Amaris.
