master arminas - Revisting Revival: A Look at What it Could Have Been « on: April 17, 2009, 11:48:11 AM »

Good morning, everyone.  Takiro and I were talking about the Clans and bouncing some ideas from each other.  Now, I have been playing around with doing Operation Revival over from the beginning—but this doing it the way it should have been done.  For the past few months, I have worked on ‘re-writing’ the Clans with two goals in mind:  the first is to ‘balance’ the Clans.

It has always struck me as odd the sheer difference in size between the largest Clan and the smallest.  Given the warrior-centric society of the Clans, would that not make the smallest very vulnerable to absorption?  I think it would.  In a culture where ‘might equals right’ being a third the size of your competitors is just asking for trouble.  So, the first thing I set out to do was to level the playing field.

The second thing I was attempting to accomplish was to address the disparity of forces.  In Canon we see the Clans divided into ‘front-line’, ‘second-line’, and garrison forces, plus the para-military units that we do not see.  Why?  The very nature of the Clans would—in my own humble opinion—prevent them from creating such distinctions.  Can you imagine the blood-shed that would ensue in Trials of Refusal and Grievance from Warriors assigned to such ‘lower-status’ units?  Furthermore, why would they even bother with those classifications to begin with?

Until the launch of Revival, the Clans dealt only with each other—and the Bandit caste.  I can not believe that the Bandit caste presents such a great threat that more than one or two Clusters are unable to defend a Clan world—and most worlds have far more than that assigned.  Against each other, Clan honor codes prevent one from conducting surprise attacks, so there is always time to move troops to fight Trials (except during Annihilations and Absorptions, but these are quite rare events).  And through the use of zell, even numerically inferior forces can face their opponents on an even footing.

What I have done here is to discard all those classifications.  If a Clan has a Cluster listed in its TOE, that is a front-line unit.  I do not bother to list PGCs and local para-military defense forces, since I see these as primarily civil order troops—lacking ‘Mechs, Aerospace Fighters, and Elementals.  These units use conventional infantry and vehicles, VTOLs and conventional fighters to keep the peace on a world.  Occassionally, they might defend against an attack, but that would be very rare.  Defending against other Clans is the duty of the fighting arm of the Toumen, as are attacks and offensive action.

Perhaps this would change after the Clans encountered guerilla insurrections in the Inner Sphere, but they would not do so beforehand, would they?

Attached to this post are two files:  My Clans lists each of the sixteen Clans pre-Revival with their full TO&E, lacking only the PGC and para-military forces.  Yes, I did say 16.  I moved up the Burrock Absorption to 3040 so it is already a done deal by the time of Revival.  The second doc, the excel worksheet Clan Comparison, shows each Clan’s strength in ‘Mechs, Elementals, Vehicles, and Fighters, as well as WarShips, Galaxies, Clusters, and Stars.  This doc lets you compare and contrast each of the Clans.

I hope that you enjoy the post and the data I have worked on.  Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas that might make this project better.

Now, on to what I have done with each of the individual Clans.

Clan Blood Spirit
For the Blood Spirits, I did not change very much overall.  A Clan in decline, they fought the Absorption War against the Adders and Burrocks.  The Spirits are a VERY rigid Clan, hewing to the original Cluster structure laid down by Nicky:  three ‘Mech trinarys, one infantry trinary, and one vehicle trinary.  Aerospace assets are assigned directly to the Clan Command, and grafted to Galaxies as needed.  Blood Spirit vehicles tend towards medium and heavy wheeled and tracked units, with heavy firepower and armor, but little mobility.  Still, the Spirit training program for their warrior sibkos results in the Clan possessing a very capable Toumen.  25 Clusters, organized in 5 Galaxies, comprise their fighting-arm.  However, they are VERY weak in WarShip strength, with a mere 4 WarShips.  Total strength is 436 Stars, including the Aerospace units assigned to the Naval Reserve and the Elemental Marines assigned to the Spirit Fleet.

Clan Cloud Cobra
The smallest of the Clans, it still 61% the size of the largest.  For the most part the Cobras do not engage in the normal tit-for-tat of combat between the Clans, preferring to defend what they have, instead of initiating constant trials against others.  With their holdings in the Tanite Worlds, they have a solid industrial base and excellent resources, which should make them a prime target.  However, despite their size, they possess the most OmniFighters of any Clan directly assigned to their fighting arm.  Any battle against the Cobras means running a gauntlet of constant fighter strikes, strafes, and bombing missions, while their small—but well-trained—‘Mech and Elemental forces maneuver for the kill.
One of the Clans that do not use the ‘standard’ organization, the Cobras instead have arranged their Clusters to suit their own needs.  Fang Clusters have two trinarys of OmniMechs and three of OmniFighters.  Guard Clusters have two binarys of OmniMechs, one of Elementals, and three of OmniFighters.  Coil Clusters are similar to Guard Clusters, but upgrade the Fighter binarys to trinarys.  These three types of Clusters are the main arm of the Toumen.
Three unique formations are also in the Clan structure.  The Battle Cluster uses the standard Clan organization of 3 ‘Mech, 1 Elemental, and 1 OmniFighter trinary.  The Grenadier Cluster has 2 ‘Mech, 1 Elemental, and 2 OmniFighter trinarys assigned to it.  The Dragoon Cluster is one of the most powerful formations in Clan space with 3 Nova Trinarys and 2 OmniFighter Trinarys.
The Cobras also maintain two command Keshiks, each of which has a trinary of OmniMechs, one of Elementals, and two Binarys of OmniFighters.
Total strength is 22 Clusters in 5 Galaxies, plus 15 WarShips, for a grand total of 376 Stars.

Clan Coyote
The Coyotes are no longer the force they once used to be, but they are still large and powerful.  27 Clusters in 6 Galaxies form the core of the Toumen.  Each Coyote Cluster uses the standard organization of 3 OmniMech trinarys, 1 Elemental trinary, and 1 OmniFighter trinary, but also adds a Command Star.  Each of the six Galaxies also has an independent Command Trinary of 15 OmniMechs.  With 13 WarShips, the Clan also has a sizable presence in space.  Total strength is 511 Stars.

Clan Diamond Shark
With 24 Clusters in 8 Galaxies, the Sharks are often perceived as weak.  After all, the Scorpions also have a mere 24 Clusters of troops.  However, each of the Clusters they deploy is overstrength.  Each posses the standard Clan organization (3 OmniMech, 1 Elemental, 1 OmniFighter trinary), but add a Command Trinary consisting of two OmniMech stars and a mixed command star with 4 OmniMechs and 2 OmniFighters.  The two support stars are often Nagas, mounting Arrow IV systems.  In addition to this, each Galaxy has a Skate—which is basically the Galaxy command unit.  Smaller than in canon, each Skate has two mixed command stars (as above) and a support nova with 5 OmniMechs and 25 Elementals.  When combined with the 17 WarShips of the Shark Fleet, this organization gives the Clan flexibility and striking power.  Total strength is 511 Stars.

Clan Fire Mandrill
Man oh man.  I can’t even begin here.  Refer to FM:CC for each individual Kindraa organization, and try to reverse engineer the numbers I give.  If they ever units, they would be one of the strongest of Clans with 28 Clusters in 7 Kindraa, for a total of 445 Stars and 7 WarShips.

Clan Ghost Bear
The single strongest Clan in existence, da Bears field 32 clusters in 8 Galaxies, along with 17 WarShips.  28 of their Clusters consists of a Command Star, two OmniMech trinarys, one Nova Binary, one Elemental Trinary, and one OmniFighter Binary.  The other four are assigned to Zeta Galaxy and are an experimental force:  each Cluster consists of just 375 Elementals (5 Trinarys).  This is the only pure Elemental command in the Clans, and is seldom employed as an intact unit.  Each of the galaxies are assigned a Keshik, consisting of either a Nova Binary (7 Galaxies) or an Elemental Trinary (Zeta only).  The Khan has an identical Keshik assigned directly to him.  Total force strength is a massive 615 Stars!  Thankfully for other Clans, unless you provoke them, they seldom emerge for their own domain.  When they do, however, Oh Mama!

Clan Goliath Scorpion
One of the smaller Clans, the Scorpions field 24 Clusters in 6 Galaxies.  Each type of Cluster is a thoroughly mixed formation (see FM:WC for details), giving the Scorps combined arms down to the Trinary level.  Total strength is 419 Stars and 17 WarShips.

Clan Hell’s Horses
An oddity among the Clans, Hell’s Horses is the only one who choose to field combat vehicles in their fighting arm (while the Spirits do field vehicles, they are conforming to the decrees of Nicky, and consider them second-rate).  At 22 Clusters and 5 Galaxies, the Horse’s look weak on paper, but that is not quite the case.  Each cluster consists of 1 OmniMech trinary, two Nova trinarys, a mixed trinary (2 vehicle stars, 1 vehicle/elemental nova star), and 1 OmniFighter trinary.  Each Galaxy also has a command element of 1 OmniMech Star, 1 Nova Star, 1 Vehicle Star, and one Vehicle Nova Star.  Two smaller clusters act as the Keshiks of the Clan.  Each consists of 1 OmniMech Star, two Nova Stars, 1 Vehicle Star, two Vehicle Nova Stars, and 1 OmniFighter Trinary.  Favoring fast, hard-hitting hover vehicles, the Horses are perhaps the ultimate Clan expression of combined arms.  Total force strength is 480 Stars and 10 WarShips.

Clan Ice Hellion
With 23 Clusters in 6 Galaxies, the Hellions excel in fast-strike tactics.  Each of their Clusters are organized according to the Clan standard organization:  3 OmniMech trinarys, 1 Elemental trinary, and 1 OmniFighter trinary.  Using lighter ‘Mechs (on average) than any other Clan, the Hellions have a difficult time maintaining a full Toumen.  Total strength is 388 Stars and 13 WarShips.  However, despite their small size and light weight, one should not under-estimate the caliber of these warriors.  It has long been a military maxim that the battle goes to ‘Whoever gets there the fastest with the mostest’—a maxim the Hellions seem to have enshrined.

Clan Jade Falcon
Second in overall strength only to da Bears, the Falcons field 30 Clusters in 7 Galaxies.  Strict traditionalists who value honor and the Martial Code of Kerensky, each Falcon Cluster adheres to the currently accepted Clan standard:  3 OmniMech Trinarys, 1 Elemental Trinary, and 1 OmniFighter Trinary.  Each Galaxy also has a Command Star of 5 OmniMechs.  Total force strength is 543 Stars and 23 WarShips.  The Falcons are aggressive and bold Warriors of the Clans, who are quick to take offense at perceived slights.  They will only seldom break zell, and then only under orders.  Bold and proud, the Falcons see themselves as what all Clans should aspire to.

Clan Nova Cat
Fielding 26 Clusters in 6 Galaxies, the Nova Cats are a powerful clan.  Featuring fewer Elementals than other Clan forces would, they have roughly a third greater Aerospace assets.  Each Cluster consists of 3 OmniMech trinarys, one Elemental binary, and two OmniFighter binarys.  In addition, each Cluster is led by a command Keshik consisting of one OmniMech binary, one Elemental binary, and one OmniFighter binary.  Total strength is 497 Stars and 33 WarShips.

Clan Smoke Jaguar
Easily the most aggressive and violent Clan, the Smoke Jaguars field a very powerful Toumen with 28 Clusters organized in 7 Galaxies.  Weak in Elemental and Aerospace assets, the Jaguars field the most OmniMechs of any Clan—and tend to prefer heavier models.  Each Cluster consists of four OmniMech trinarys, one Elemental binary, and one independent OmniFighter Star.  Each of the seven Galaxies is assigned a Command Keshik.  In addition to these seven, two more are assigned to the Khan and saKhan.  Each of these nine command units consists of 1 OmniMech Trinary, 1 Elemental Trinary, and 1 OmniFighter Binary.  Total force strength is 563 Stars and 21 WarShips.

Clan Snow Raven
One of the smallest Clans, the Ravens are the most powerful in terms of raw Naval strength.  Fielding 40 WarShips, the deterrence imposed by their Fleet often ends fights before they truly begin.  The main fighting arm of the Clan fields 21 Clusters in 5 Galaxies.  The Corvus Keshik is the command formation of the entire Clan, and uses the standard Clan organization (3 OmniMech trinarys, 1 Elemental trinary, 1 OmniFighter trinary) as do the Battle and Striker Clusters.  The Phalanx Clusters field five mixed trinarys, each consisting of one OmniMech star, one Elemental star, and one OmniFighter star.  Finally, the Raven Wing Clusters consist of five trinarys of OmniFighters.  Total force strength is 460 Stars and 40 WarShips.

Clan Star Adder
After gaining the remnants of Clan Burrock and spending the last decade rebuilding shattered forces, the Adders have emerged as a major player among the Clans.  Fielding 27 Clusters in 5 Galaxies, only the Smoke Jaguars can match the sheer numbers of OmniMechs deployed by this Clan.  Each Cluster consists of a Command Star of OmniMechs, three OmniMech trinarys, one Nova Binary, and one Aerospace Binary.  In addition, the five Galaxies are led by a command unit consisting of one OmniMech Binary and a Nova Binary.  Seen as upstarts by the Falcons and Jaguars, the Adders are known for their use of unconventional (for Clan) techniques that hearken back to the old SLDF training manuals.  Many Adders will act in most unClan-like behavior on the field of battle; if it means victory.  This is one of the few Clans that actively studies strategy and not just tactics.  Total force strength is 563 Stars and 28 WarShips.

Clan Steel Viper
Famous for their brutal training regime, the Vipers are widely acclaimed for producing some of the fiercest warriors of all the Clans.  At 26 Clusters in 5 Galaxies, they are also a fairly large Clan.  Each of their Clusters uses the traditional standard Clan formation (3 OmniMech trinarys, 1 Elemental trinary, 1 OmniFighter trinary), without any independent Cluster or Galaxy command formations.  Total force strength is 437 Stars with 15 WarShips.

Clan Wolf
Last, but certainly not least, we come to Clan Wolf.  One of the leaders of Clan society since Nicolas Kerensky pledged his Bloodname to the Clan, it has provided many of the great advances in Clan society and culture.  Capable of fielding 28 Clusters in 7 Galaxies, only the Falcons, Bears, Adders, and Jaguars can claim greater numbers of troops.  Each Cluster consists of 2 OmniMech Trinarys, 1 Nova Binary, 1 Elemental trinary, and 1 OmniFighter Binary.  In addition, each Galaxy has a command Keshik consisting of 1 OmniMech Binary (typically support units, such as Nagas), two mixed command stars (2 OmniMechs, 10 Elementals, and 2 OmniFighters each), and one mixed command star (4 OmniMechs and 2 OmniFighters).  Total force strength is 514 Stars and 19 WarShips.

Well, folks, that is it.  I hope you like what I’ve done—be sure to let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions.  See you next week.

Hall of the Khans
Strana Mechty
Kerensky Cluster

“Yes, Khan Scott?  You wish to add something to these proceedings?” Leo Showers, ilKhan of the Clans rather sourly asked as he was interrupted by the Goliath Scorpion Khan.

Khan Scott bowed towards the floor of the chamber to where Showers stood along with Elias Crichell, the senior Khan of the Jade Falcons.  “I would indeed, my ilKhan.  Over four weeks ago, we met in this very Hall and discussed and debated what our actions should be in response the captured Inner Sphere vessel that had found the Home Worlds.  At that time, we, sitting in closed session, voted to begin the return to the Inner Sphere; both to prevent any hostile forces there from invading us, and to fulfill the destiny that Nicolas Kerensky himself entrusted to our Founders, and to our Clans.”

“Most of us—Warden and Crusader alike—agreed that by finding their way to the worlds of the Kerensky Cluster, the time for debate has ended.  The time of our Return has come.  Not all,” she said, looking across the chamber at Khan Ulric Kerensky of the Wolves, “agreed.  In accordance with our laws, a Trial of Refusal was declared and fought.  Our brothers and sisters of the Ghost Bears upheld the vote of the Grand Council, though it cost them the lives of their Khan and saKhan to do so.”  She bowed towards the two newly elected Ghost Bear Khans, one of whom nodded politely at her in return.

“Yes, yes, yes, Khan Scott.  That is all true.  Are you speaking merely to recount the events of the past month or do you have a point to make?” Elias Crichell snarled from the floor.

“My point, Khan Crichell, my fellow Khans is this:  your plan is either that of a Warrior blinded by his own glory, or else a Traitor.  Which one do you prefer, my ilKhan?”

A roar of protest erupted across the chamber, though Ulric Kerensky just smiled broadly from his seat.

Leo Showers turned red, and then white as he forced himself to remain on the floor, instead of flying at the insolent Scorpion Khan to rend her to pieces as his Clan’s namesake would have done.  “You go far too far, Khan Scott,” he whispered.

“Perhaps, ilKhan Showers.  But it did serve to get your attention, did it not?  You offer the Clans to right to bid on our return; to determine by Trial who shall accompany the invasion force back to the Inner Sphere.  Who are you, ilKhan or no, to determine that this invasion shall not contain all of us?  By what right do you and Khan Crichell seek to hamstring those chosen to invade by restricting the force they might bring to bear?”

Before Showers could answer, Scott swept her arm across the chamber.  “We are all Khans of the Clans of Nicolas Kerensky.  This destiny belongs to us all, not to a chosen few.  WE are the generation of the Return.  When we undertook Klondike and returned to the Pentagon, Nicolas did not allow us to bid for the right to assault Dagda or Eden, Arcadia or Babylon.  No.  He did his DUTY as ilKhan and assigned us our tasks.  ALL OF US.  By taking this action, ilKhan, you are condemning those twelve Clans who do not make your cut to mediocrity and stagnation.  You will deprive Warriors of the Clans the right to return which our Founder himself gave us a solemn duty to keep and uphold.”

A murmur went through the hall as the Khans considered her words.

“You are mistaken, Khan of the Scorpions, if you believe that your words will change our plans,” Showers growled.  “We bid for all manners of Trials—including Annihilations and Absorptions, which I may add, you risk for your disregard of our ways.”

“A threat, ilKhan?  You shall find I do not threaten easily, and your words do not sway me on this matter.  If you and Elias Crichell do this—bid for the right to invade, to take part in your Operation Revival—it is you, Leo Showers, that will be found guilty by this Council; guilty of genocide against an entire generation of Clan Warriors!”

“Are you mad, woman?” Showers shouted, as the voices of twenty-nine other Khans erupted in protest.

“My Khans, by forcing us to bid against one another—contrary to how the Founder himself conducted our actions in Klondike, which is the only other example of our united action in history, he condemns those warriors left behind—those Clans he deems unworthy—to languish in obscurity, while a handful of warriors, a mere fourth-part of our Clans garner unto themselves glory and add to their codex.  By denying us the right that the Founder gave to us, the duty to one day return, he acts against the very man who created us and our traditions.  By forcing us to bid, and to cut down our bids, he is throwing nine-tenths of our force to the side.”

“Yes, the people of the Inner Sphere are barbarians.  Yes, we are the Children of Kerensky, the Heirs of the Star League Defense Forces.  Yes, our technology is far, far advanced over those who squat on the planets from which we were driven into exile.  But this warrior, this ilKhan, seeks to deny you FOREVER that which the Founder declared to be self-evident; that one day the Clans, in all their might and majesty, would return and set those who remained behind to right.  My Khans,” she lowered her head and her voice.  “My Khans, this matter is too important to deny any true Clan the right to participate.  I would ask that we vote upon this matter; aff to force the ilKhan to lead as Nicolas Kerensky led almost two centuries ago, or neg to carry out his plan as written.”

She sat at her desk and closed her eyes.  For a long moment only silence filled the chamber, and then Khan N’Buta of the Adders stood.  “I second the motion, my ilKhan.  Let us vote, let us act as the Founder did, let the barbarians tremble at our approach.  Call the vote, Leo Showers, call the vote.”

Just a few brief words of what might have happened.  Why should just four Clans (of seventeen, not sixteen) get the right to return, and no one else does?  It would seem to me, that the other twelve (or thirteen) would object quite loudly to being excluded.  Why did not one Khan argue as I have Scott doing here?  Just some fodder for your thoughts.

I concur on your conclusion as we discussed Master Arminas and a fine chapter.

Kiss the Inner Sphere goodbye  :P
The inclusion of the Horses and the Scorpies alone changes things, the Horses combined arms experience and liberal interpretation of Zellbringen would cause a lot of trouble while the Goliath Scorpions did help train the Wolf Dragoons so have some realization of the IS style of combat.  Add to that the ability to bring thier full force to bear without the distinction between first and second line troops...Ouch.  The full might of the Clans would simply sweep away thier opposition initially and probably take Terra.
My counter to balance the Clans...If the Tech base is not heavily upgraded on the Sucessor States side; ie Star League tech and sizable WarShip fleets; the use of WMDs on a massive scale would seem to be the only answer.  Which would naturally invite reprisals.
Then again if we look at a real world model of how a supposedly conquered populace acts, well the Clans no matter how you sum it up cannot effectivly garrison any of the more heavily populated worlds.  Those savashri Spheroids don't just roll over and accept the new order like good meek Clan civvies.
  Any way thats my thoughts.

You could counter balance the Clans strength by stepping up ComStar's role or strengthening the IS alliance.

Impressive work master arminas. ;D

You have done a terrible thing though; introduced logic into an illogical system. I like it.  ;)

Inner Sphere: Face the Wrath of the Children of Kerensky.

Indeed.

Once again well written stuff master arminas. I'm impressed.

As for suggestions(or in this case questions Wink):
How many invasion corridors do you want to have?
Only the original four?
E.g. FedCom, FedCom/FRR, FRR/DC and DC?
Thus several Clans have to be assigned to a corridor which could have interesting results depending on which Clans are assigned to a common invasion corridor.
Or will each Clan have it's own corridor?
Then the number of invasion corridors has to be increased(or the size of the corridor dramatically decreased).
This begs the question: Which Successor and Periphery states will be affected? The same as in canon or different?
For example: Would the invasion corridors stretch from the Circinus Federation via the FRR to the Outworlds Alliance, thus spanning the "northern" half of the Inner Sphere?

Oh and before I forget, Garrison Clusters should be employed by the Clans after the invasion of the Inner Sphere.

And last but not least:
I for one hope you will continue with this story. Smiley

Ciao
Hessian

P.S.: I noticed some Cluster nicknames I am unfamiliar with. E.g. "The Immortals" for the Jaguar Grenadiers. Is this a canon nickname or one that you came up with master arminas?

master arminas Re: Revisting Revival: A Look at What it Could Have Been « Reply #10 on: April 21, 2009, 03:02:16 PM »

For some Clusters I could not find a 'canon' name.  The Blood Spirits apparently do not designate any Cluster with a name:  it gets its official designation and that is it.  For the others, if I did not have a name, I winged it.  The Jaguar Grenadiers, I nicknamed 'The Immortals' after the Persian Immortals, seen most recently in the movie 300.  The real-life Immortals were ruthless, deadly soldiers that frightened everyone.  So it seemed to fit the Jag Grenadiers.  LOL

I am thinking of each Clan beginning the invasion with one Galaxy, plus a second in reserve.  The corridors will be smaller, but there will be eight of them.  Two Clans will share one corridor, bidding upon the worlds of that corridor for each successive wave.  Unlike canon, the IlKhan will not assign Clans to the corridors:  it will be up each Clan to determine with whom it shares.  For example, given the closeness between Wolf and Scorpion, they will likely share a corridor.  The same with Adder and Cobra.  The Khans will have to chose who they dislike the least.

I can easily see the assigned forces increase by one or two more Galaxies, especially after veteran IS troops begin to appear.

What are your thoughts?

muttley Re: Revisting Revival: A Look at What it Could Have Been « Reply #11 on: April 21, 2009, 03:18:13 PM »

Maybe some of the Clans have particular grudges vs the Periphery Realms based on events during the War- ie the 11th Battle Cluster's forbearers the 11th Battle Regiment of the 146th Royal 'Mech Division were victims of a war crime by the Taurians on XX world and the Cluster requests permission to conquer the world to settle the debt.

If the Clans timed their movements, the Houses could be really confused with reports of unknown raiders hitting all sorts of places while the main invasion corridors are being steamrollered.  This would also dilute each Clans holdings- making many more opportunities for Clans to strike at each other as in the Kerensky Cluster worlds.

D-Day is now set for 17 FEB 3051 to allow units to move.

Assuming the unit move through uninhabited systems, what happens if IE expeditions, prospectors, and unknown colonies etc... start bumping into these units?

Like in the official timeline, taking them as bondsmen.

For the corridors apart from good strategical thinking (though shall not split your forces too far away from each other), I do not see why the Clans could not invade from different directions (though shall confuse your opponents).

What about ComStar? Would they be used by the Clans like in the official timeline or not?

Tactics?  Why mess up a good wargame with tactics?  Think of the chaos in the IS when clanners are popping up everywhere...

Let the nukes fly.  I would be interesting to see how the clans deal with WMD's used on a truly massive scale.  Imagine the anilihation of multiple Galaxies and thier attendant fleets by the FedCom who at least have the nuclear cappacity of the US.  Might actually give the IS a chance if the Houses don't back down.  (ie: No matter what the Clanners do everywhere they go they are met with atomics, gas, biowar.)  After all thier supply lines are way too long as it is and it takes a long time to set up new IS based ones when the tech base is so inferior.

WMDs are an option against the Clans, but at what cost to the Houses? To me it seems more a scorched earth strategy of the desperate rather than a logical course of action. I understand that there are thousands of worlds in the IS, but at some point the citizens are going to be angry that their planets won't be habitable for hundreds if not thousands of years. Just a thought...

Tactics?  Why mess up a good wargame with tactics?  Think of the chaos in the IS when clanners are popping up everywhere...

But chaos without a goal and a strategy is useless.

On the order of the this version of the Clan invasion it becomes a desperation scenario.  Also use of nukes in space against transports wont have much affect on the ground.  Even orbital fights might screw up non hardened communications but you'd have more to worry about from a warship making planetfall the hard way then you would radiation. The scale once you leave the atmosphere becomes one of the itsy bitsy Alamo vs the electromagnetic field of a PLANET (Looks around sheepishly).  The output of rads from a solar flare makes a CBT nuke look like a bic lighter.
Also lets not sell our House Lords short give me some Clan DNA samples and 21st century tech and I'd start targeting the genetic markers that make up the Clanners unique gene modifications.  They can just get sick...
Now lets look at the use of nukes on the surface first and formost nobody uses fission weapons (Atomics and hydrogen bombs), they are dirty nasty and cause you more harm than good.  Neutron and Fusion weapons have much less of an impact, Neutron weapons have a short half life, you can reuse the area in under a decade, while fusion bombs burn up every thing in thier detonation.  So while the whole scenario sucks life will go on.
My interest here whas what it does to the Clan psyche.  After the first use of such weapons en masse sure the Clans issue massive reprisals, most story line writers stop there.  What if it never ends, what if the IS wipes out whole Toumans pick big ones too, the Wolves, the Falcons, the Bears and it never ends.  Where do they go from there?
And then throw in the kicker; in the face of a massive "Alien" invasion the House Lords reform the Star League.  Gods above what a story.
And don't worry Muttley you'd have plenty of 'Mech action going on.

I just worked a little with your files and here is what I found

The Blood Spirit are the strongest when you look at the split of their forces among Elites, Veterans...
Then you have Ghost Bear, Ice Hellion, Hell's Horses, Steel Viper, Star Adder, Nova Cat.
Jade Falcon, Wolf, Goliath Scorpion   and Snow Raven    are 3rd.
Smoke Jaguar, Fire Mandrill and Coyote    are next.
Cloud Cobra and Diamond Shark are the last ones.

Now if you look at the numerical importance the ranking is not the same:
Ghost Bear
Jade Falcon
Wolf, Fire Mandrill and Smoke Jaguar
Coyote and Star Adder
Nova Cat and Steel Viper
Blood Spirt
Diamond Shark and Goliath Scorpion
Ice Hellion
Hell's Horses and Cloud Cobra
Snow Raven

I am not sure what to think about these figures as I would have thought that numerical advantage would be for those with lower quality (and also the other way around) but it is not the case.

Bringing it back from the dead.  I have reworked force strength slightly, and hope to have the new numbers up this week.  The Fire Mandrils are now a Dead Clan--I just can't get my head around the Kindraa and how to fit them into Revival, so they are gone.

I am picturing 5 Invasion Corridors, each slightly larger than their Canon equivilents.  Each Corridor will have three Clans (at an average strength of 4 Primary and 3 Reserve Galaxies per Corridor).

Alpha Corridor will be assigned to Jade Falcon.  This is a triangle extending from Hood IV to Arc Royal to Terra, back up to Borghese to Somerset.

Beta Corridor lies to the 'East'.  Somerset to Borghese to Terra to Al Hilah to The Edge.  Clan Wolf will be assigned to this corridor.

Delta Corridor is next.  The Edge to Al Hilah to Terra to Rubigen to Damien.  This the province of the Ghost Bears.

Gamma Corridor brings us to the Draconis Combine, with the Steel Vipers assigned as the primary Clan.  Damien to Rubigen to Terra to Dover to Vierentofta.

Finally, the Smoke Jaguars have Epsilon Corridor.  Virentofta to Dover to Terra to Philadelphia to Hartshill.

The question I have for you is this:  what Clans should be assigned to which Corridors?  Blood Spirit, Cloud Cobra, Coyote, Diamond Shark, Goliath Scorpion, Hell's Horses Ice Hellion, Nova Cat, Snow Raven, and Star Adder remain available.

What are your thoughts?

Wouldn't it be better to have the lesser clans acting flank guard in the exposed outer corridors? Two each in the core corridors and four in the outer corridors with the SR fleet acting as a general reserve for all Clans to call uppon.

Reserves needs either to be either mobile, specialised or good at holding territories.

Therefore you could split them in two categories: those who are kept in reserve because they might bring an added value when released and those used to free more troops for the front.

I will not split them as I am probably the least partial of all us on this topic.

Hello, again.

I have finished 11 of the 15 Clans that will be taking part in my vision of Revival.  Each Clan will be field an ‘Expeditionary Force’ of either 2 or 3 Galaxies.  Below are my revised OBs, along with a few notes on the ones that I have completed.  As always, let me know what you think!  Today, I give you the Blood Spirits, Cloud Cobras, and Coyotes.  More to follow.

AtV, GMotER

Clan Blood Spirit

The Spirits are quite interesting.  Like all of the Clans, they only allow their finest warriors to participate in Revival—unlike any other Clan, this means that every last member of the Toumen is of ELITE status.  Nine full Clusters of Elite Troops, divided among two Galaxies.  Between their sizable ground forces—45 OmniMechs; 75 Elementals, and 30 Heavy/Assault tracked and wheeled vehicles per Cluster—and their status of quality, the Spirits will prove themselves a vicious foe against the Inner Sphere.

However, their rigidity and arrogance—the latter rivaled only by the Jaguars—plus their lack of integral fighter support gives this Clan what may become a lethal weakness.  That, and their expectation that Revival will be a cake-walk, means that the Spirits will bring less supplies than any other Clan.  A mere 9 Merchant class JumpShips provide the barest minimum of supplies and equipment.  And those nine ships only carry one single cargo ship each.  The other docking collar is filled with a Titan-C DropShip, each with a binary of fighters from the naval reserve.  All four of the Clan WarShips are available for support however, giving the Spirits the numbers of fighters its needs to support its operations.

But the fighters are in a different chain of command than the ground forces—and historically, the two arms of the Spirit Toumen do not always manage to communicate well.  Cluster commanders cannot issue orders to the Navy, nor vice versa.  Only three individuals—the Khan, saKhan, and the Omega Galaxy Commander—have that authority.  Still, total force strength is a solid 160 stars, including the naval fighter reserve and marine elementals.

Clan Cloud Cobra

An interesting addition to Revival, the Cobras are notoriously weak on the ground, but are almost unmatched in the skies above.  A strong fighter arm provides the main offensive punch, giving this Clan the ability to conduct truly devastating attacks—but difficulties in holding captured terrain and responding to unusual situations.  Eight Clusters (in two Galaxies) provide the main striking force, augmented by the two Command Keshiks.  Smaller than a line Cluster, the Keshiks do give the Cobras a small reserve force, and an elite one at that.  Still, of the 8 Clusters, a mere 3 are elite, the remainder are of veteran quality.  And a definite weakness in ‘Mechs and Elementals may prove the downfall of this Clan—if, that is, the Inner Sphere can nullify the five dozen ASF each Cluster fields.

Six WarShips accompany the Cobra force, along with thirty cargo DropShips, giving them moderate supplies.  An additional 8 Invader class JumpShips will arrive six months after Revival kicks off—bearing new cargo ships and supplies.  The Cobras plan to maintain this schedule by sending the surplus vessels back to the Homeworlds, giving them a small—but significant steady stream of fresh supplies and replacement warriors.  With 156 Stars—including the naval forces—the Cobras feel that they have enough troops to allow them to compete with all but the largest of the Clans.

Clan Coyote

Long a powerhouse among the Clans of Kerensky, the Coyotes are widely regarded as a force in decline.  But that is not the opinion of the Warriors of Clan Coyote.  Committing 10 Clusters to Revival, the Coyote Toumen is a powerful statement that THEIR Clan can become the IlClan by taking Terra.  Two Galaxies (Alpha and Delta) each consist of four Clusters, plus a Galaxy Command Trinary, supported by two of the Command Keshiks—the Golden Keshik and the Silver Keshik.  In weight of ‘Mechs, the four Assault Clusters assigned to the Expeditionary Force can be matched only by the Clusters of the Smoke Jaguars.  If the ‘Yotes have any weakness, it is in their lack of lighter machines for recon work—though Coyote doctrine is to use ASF for that purpose.

Flexible and not bound to doctrine, the Coyotes may well prove themselves the equal of Wolf and Scorpion in actual battle against the Inner Sphere.  However, they will experience difficulties in the pursuit phase after winning the initial clash.    Four of the Coyote Clusters are considered elite, while the remaining six are all veteran.  Six WarShips support the Coyote Expeditionary Force, giving them a solid reserve against unanticipated threats.  A second major weakness is—like many Clans—the lack of a substantial supply system.  In the end, this may prove the Achilles heel, much as it did in canon.  Requiring six months to move supplies, equipment, munitions, and replacements from the Homeworlds to the Inner Sphere, many Clans—the Coyotes among them—will shortly begin to experience shortages, and have gaps arise in their Toumen from losses in battle.  However, with 169 Stars, it may take a while for such gaps to become readily apparent.

If they manage to overcome that, the Coyotes stand poised to annihilate any in their path, and resume their rightful station among the top tier of the Clans.

What I was thinking was this:  with 3 Clans per Corridor, there will be 2 with 2 Galaxies each, and 1 with 3.  Each of the two Galaxy Clans will have one 'active' and one 'reserve' Galaxy, while the big dogs will have two 'active' and one 'reserve' formation.  Between waves, the Clan can deactivate an active 'Galaxy' and place it in the reserve, replacing it with a formation that is rested and refitted.  The reserve units will serve to keep territory gained in line until non-combat PGCs arrive to take over, as well as a strategic reserve.

Of course, there is nothing keeping a single Clan from throwing all of their units into action--except that sense of Clan honor.  If others can accomplish the same with less, you would shame your entire Clan by adding still more force, right?

Once it turns ugly--from the Clan point of view, when the IS decides screw this and begins fighting guerilla style--then all bets are off.  Can the Clans maintain a reserve in the face of IS counter-attacks?  Or do they go all Smoke Jaguar on the conquered worlds?  Some points to consider.

Clan Diamond Shark

The Merchant Clan.  Derided by other Clans as ruled over by Merchant wanna-bes, the Sharks remain a powerful force in the Homeworlds.  For their part in Operation Revival, the Sharks broke with long-standing traditions:  limited to 8 Clusters, they choose to deploy two four-Cluster Galaxies, instead of their standard three-Cluster formations.  But this is one Clan that shall not want for supplies:  they have come to the Inner Sphere loaded for bear!  (Or in this case, bandits.)

With the overstrength Clusters of their Toumen, the Sharks are well able to keep pace with even the largest of Clans—and 5 Elite clusters gives them the means to do so in spades.  The remaining three are all veteran—still equal to most Inner Sphere elite formations.  With 10 WarShips, the Sharks have more vessels than any other Clan save the Ravens, but four of those ships are pure cargo transports—two Volga and two Carrack.  The leadership of the Sharks recognizes that no one will allow their Clan to win superiority over them, but they still intend for Revival to turn a profit.

When other Clans are slowed by their lack of supplies, the Sharks will be there—ready to supply them, for a price.  Not TOO much of a price, of course—that way lies annihilation, after all—but still more than the needy Clan would have spent had they PROPERLY considered the logistics of the matter.  Total force strength for the Sharks—including naval fighters and marine elementals—is a hefty 184 Stars, thanks mainly to the overstrength Clusters and the big Galaxy command elementals Sharks call Skates.

Clan Ghost Bear

The largest and one of the most powerful of the Clans, Ghost Bear is quite conservative—especially for a Clan allied with the Crusaders.  Other Clans may well be more traditional and honor-bound, but the Bears, conservative thought and action guide their path.  If two paths to the same goal exist, the Bears will not try something new, favoring instead a plan that has worked before.  In many ways, this has kept them from making the mistakes other Clans have made throughout the years, but it has also kept them from leaping ahead.

But the Bear philosophy is not about leaping—it is about making a decision and carrying it out, fully, thoughtfully, and without remorse.  When the Bears do act, they move like lightning, but until then they consider all options, seeking to gain the upper hand by selecting the proper course of action.  With 12 Clusters divided among 3 Galaxies, plus the two Command Keshiks, the Bears have one of—if not THE—largest forces among the Expedition.  Chosen partly because of their innate conservatism, and partly because of their place among the top tier of the Clans, the Bears intend to have the force they require to meet all challenges—and still maintain their holdings in the Homeworlds.  Seven clusters are rated as Elite, while the remaining five are all veteran.

On the ground, few others can make headway against a Bear defense, what with the heavy proportion of OmniMechs and Elementals—and on the offensive, the many fast moving elemental carriers in service provide the Bear armored infantry with unprecedented mobility.  Yet, the Bears lack an extensive air arm; while the fighters and pilots they possess are very good, their numbers are still low compared to more conventional Clans.  The total Bear force strength is very powerful, with a total of 212 Stars, backed up by 6 WarShips.

Clan Goliath Scorpion

An enigma among the Clans, many dismiss the Scorpions as drug-users and hedonists.  But they are also deadly warriors—within and without a ‘Mech.  This is a Clan that can be ignored or mocked only at your own peril.  With 8 Clusters divided among 2 Galaxies, the Scorpions field one of the smallest forces of Revival.  But of those 8 Clusters, a full 7 are considered as Elite, the last one as merely veteran.  When combined with the Scorpion preference for targeting computers, any engagement against these Warriors will send chills up the spine of any foe—Clan or Inner Sphere.

Unique among the Clans is the mixed nature of all the forces of a Cluster.  Individual Trinary formations feature a mixture of ‘Mech, ‘Fighter, and Elementals, tailored to cope with specific situations.  This allows Scorpion Cluster commanders to respond quickly and with the proper force to virtually any situation that may arise.  It also requires Star Colonels and Galaxy Commanders to have a wide range of skills so that they can handle their units in proper fashion.  One must remember, it was Scorpions who trained Wolf’s Dragoons on tactics and advised them upon the makeup of their regiments.

When facing the Inner Sphere, one can picture a Wolf’s Dragoons, 8 Regiments strong, with Clan technology when fighting the Scorpions.  Of course this is mellowed by the extreme regard with which they hold zellbringen, but still it is worthy of note.  6 WarShips provide support for the Toumen, along with 43 dedicated cargo DropShips.  Unlike many Clans, the Scorps tend to select one Omni configuration and not continually change it.  Since most Warriors favor direct fire weapons tied into targeting computers, few Star Colonels carry much in the way of alternate ‘Mech configuration pods.

At just 140 Stars, the Scorpions are tiny, but every bit as lethal as their namesake.  Venom after all, does not care how big either the target or the inflictor are, after all.

Got to love my Diamond Sharks!

To comment on the revised invasion plans you could go three ways. Before I get to the groupings a few notes. Wolf, Ghost Bear, Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Star Adder I assume will be the Primary or "lead" Clans based on overall strength which should be a major factor in determining these elevated positions. Also remember the flanks were the most prized corridors for their opposition (FedCom and Draconis Combine) and difficult strategic positioning while the inner corridors were considered less prestigious assignments.

One, Combat Every Clan would have to participate in trails and based on the results would be assigned the Corridor. This is what the Invading Clans did in canon history (although to be fair it did include Bidding) and could be repeated here with the following difference. After you established your Primary Clans your runners up would be assigned their Corridors as they prefer. Trails of Refusal could then be held to resolve disputes.

Two, Diplomacy. Another Clan like way of resolving the groupings could be resolved by these negotiations which could result in more "desired" pairings. Instead of getting stuck with Hell's Horses I'm thinking Ghost Bear may want Snow Raven so perhaps a deal could be reached allowing a Primary Clan to chose its partners.

Three, History. If possible the Clans could recreate their original pairings from Operation Klondike giving this mission special rememberance to their founders.

I do not think option 2 is really plausible (for Clanners that is).
Option 1 is the traditional one but I do like the third one.

At that time, the Blood Spirit were trying to link everyone within the Clans.

And the Jade Falcon/Wolf feud began there when Kerensky decided to join Clan Wolf, while the Warriors of Clan Jade Falcon thought they had fought better.

Well doesn't look like the historical angle will work. Eden lays claim to three of the major Clans alone. Dagda and Circe force would have only two Clans.

What about mixing both methods?
First historical and then you select some "minor" Clans and get them into a Trial to determine who will move to another corridor.

That would still originally assigned the Jags, Falcs, and Wolfs to the same corridor, Ice.  THAT would be a recipe for disaster.

Or the best way to have them perform better than anyone (to show which Clan is the best).
Obviously, you would need a real strong leader to keep them focused and prevent them from launching uncoordinated attacks.

Hell's Horses

The Horses are unique among the Clans.  While the Spirits DO field vehicles, they do so only because it was what Nicolas Kerensky instructed--not because of tactical or strategic concerns or because they particularly like vehicles.  The Horse's, on the other hand, consider modern vehicles to be an integral part of their Toumen.  Like the Sharks, they tend to have more troops per cluster than other Clans, but their Clusters are completely integrated formations.  This makes them extremely flexible and powerful units, well able to smash through Fed-Com, Rasalhague, or Draconis defenders in the drive upon Terra.  Because the other Clans do not use such units themselves, the Horse's may well find themselves with an advantage against unsuspecting foes.  Plus the fact that Horse Clusters are bloody HUGE:  35 OmniMechs; 30 OmniVehicles; 150 Elementals; and 20 OmniFighters each.  Add in the two Galaxy Command formations, and the two Command Keshiks, and the Horse's have committed a very powerful and responsive force to the campaign.

The only weak part of the Horse toumen is their aerospace.  A mere 4 WarShips accompany their forces--which cannot make up for the lack of fighters at the Cluster level.  This could be their Achille's Heel.  Of the eight Clusters this Clan has committed to Revival, 7 are rated as Elite, while 1 is Veteran.  Total force strength--including Naval OmniFighters and Marine Elementals--is 186 stars.

Ice Hellion

One of the most aggressive of the Clans, the Ice Hellions favor fast-moving, lighter forces that rely on 'swarm' tactics as well as precise shooting to win the day.  When faced with a choice between attack and defense, the Hellions will more often than not choose to attack--but at a place and time the defender has likely not considered.  Getting there the 'firstest with the mostest' is an ancient saying from Old Terra, but the Hellions have taken to heart this motto.

Strangely, for such rabid Crusaders, the Hellions have also evolved a rather loose interpretation of Zell.  Due to their lighter individual units, Hellions consider it quite proper for two or even three of their Warriors (or points) to deal with a single enemy unit--if, that is, they enemy unit outmasses them.  This should come as a horrid surprise to Inner Sphere forces.  Combined with the speed and agility of their 'Mechs, this pack tactic will provide the Hellions with many victories.

The single weakness of this Clan lies in the lack of a substantial infantry contingent.  They are very weak in Elemental Battle Armor and may not be able to replace casulaties in a timely fashion--especially at the end of a year-long supply chain.  6 WarShips equals the Naval Contributions of most other Clans, but the Hellions are the only Clan--other than the Ravens--to bring a McKenna class battleship on Revival.  The Cage's Pride serves as the Flagship of their Expeditionary Force, as well as a heavy reserve that few other Clans can match.  Of the 9 Clusters committed to Revival by Ice Hellion, 8 are rated as Elite, while the last is Veteran.  At just 155 Stars, they are considered weak by other Clans, but the Hellions see themselves as 'lean and mean'.

Jade Falcon

One of the strongest and most traditional of the Clans--at least according to them--is Clan Jade Falcon.  Fielding 12 Clusters divided among three Galaxies, they strongly hew to the vision of Kerensky as interpreted by the Falcon Khans.  Each Cluster fields 45 OmniMechs, 75 Elementals, and 30 OmniFighters, giving the Falcons a solid balanced force.  Tough and tenacious, they fight with honor--upholding Zell long past when other Clans would break it.  Force leaders among this Clan very seldom break their bid--doing so is a violation of Falcon Honor.  This is a proud Clan of Warriors that may well prove among the best the Clans have to offer.

Their only flaw may be the arrogance with which they hold the Inner Sphere--and their ability to continually under-estimate them in the defense of their homes.  Of course, with 9 WarShips, 10 Elite Clusters, and 2 Veteran Clusters, it might not matter much in the long run.  221 Stars comprise the Falcon Expeditionary Force--rivaling the Bears for sheer numbers; of course, 35 of those Stars belong to the Navy.

If I remember well, they withdraw after a few shots to bid for the destruction of their opponent.
Would they do the same?

OK.  Here is the final numbers on the Clans themselves, including the Expeditionary Forces.  I think I will go with three 'Invasion Zones' each with four Corridors and one Reserve Clan.

For my own universe, I have redone the Clans to fit better within my concepts.  My own views of how the Clans should be in large parts matches those of Deathshadow (in his remarkable post that examines how Clans should be played).

First, some background.  I picture the Clans as much closer to parity in strength than in canon.  With such an aggressive society, having half (OR LESS!) the warriors of an opponent is just begging for Absorption.  And yet, with the continous nature of Clan warfare and their views on life and death, I don't see them having dozens of galaxies each.

Because of this, I have redone each of the Clans that exist in my timeline.  The work I have done is posted below--please feel free to comment on it.  For the most part, history is as written in canon, with a few notable exceptions.

Clan Burrock's association with the Bandit Caste was discovered in 3041--and their Absorption was given a green light by the Council of Khans in that year.  Star Adder won the bidding, but both the Spirits and the Fire Mandrils intervened.

In the end, the Burrocks were absorbed, but the casualties on both sides prevented the Adders from capitalizing on their victory.  The Spirits were also hurt, but were able to quickly recover.  The Mandrills, however, already fragmented splintered still further.

Realizing that several Clans were preparing to act against their allies, the Spirits launched a series of Trials against individual Kindraa--absorbing whole Trinarys and claiming blood-rights wholesale.

When debate for the Absorption of the Mandrills arose in 3047, the Spirits acted quickly and managed to win the bidding by defeating a Jaguar Combat Cluster in a narrow victory on Strana Mechny--earning the Spirits the enimity of that Clan.

The actual absorption took little time and managed to bring the Spirits back up to a strength level consistent with the majority of the Clans--though still below the levels they had fielded before the Burrock absorption.

The lead-up to revival happens as in canon--but this time around, the Big Four are not allowed to conduct the Invasion alone.  All fifteen surviving Clans demand a place in the Operation--and win a Trial of Refusal against IlKhan Showers in the matter.

Each Clan is permitted to field either two or three Galaxies--which some (Star Adders) still maintain is too few and others (Smoke Jaguars) declare too much.

Technology is more advanced than in canon, with ATMs, Heavy Lasers, Artemis V, HAGs, AP Gauss, and micro-lasers available in 3050.

I will include two attachements to this post.  The first is titled Clan OBs and lists the full strength of each Clan (with the exception of PGCs).  I make no distinction between front-line and second-line troops--and in my universe second-line 'Mechs do not exist.  PGCs do NOT contain any 'Mech forces or Elementals or Aerospace assests--they are conventional infantry and vehicles only.

The second attachement is titled Operation Revival and details the expeditionary force of each participating Clan.  I have not yet chosen the corridors of attack, but I am thinking of three Invasion 'Zones', each with four Corridors and a Reserve Clan.  Zone Alpha will hit along the FWL/LC border, Zone Beta will be per canon, and Zone Gamma will be the FS/DC border.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

Blood Spirit
One of the most strigent of Clans, the Warriors of Blood Spirit regard themselves as the only ones who hold to what Kerensky intended in the beginning.  Fiercely isolationist, they have suffered decline and defeat in recent years, but the addition of the Mandril blood-lines and isorla to their toumen may have given them a new lease on life.

Fielding 31 Clusters--13 of those rated as Clan elites--in 6 Galaxies, the Spirits are weak only in their lack of integrated aerospace assets.  Hewing to the original intention of Nicolas Kerensky, they are the only Clan other than Hell's Horses to retain armored vehicles in their offensive toumen--though they still regard vehicle crews as beneath 'real' Warriors.

The addition of the Fire Mandril Fleet has provided the Spirits with a much needed boost in their own Navy.  Now capable of fielding 11 WarShips, all Spirit ASF are assigned to the Naval Command and attached as needed to the various Galaxies.

During Operation Revival, the Spirits will contribute two Galaxies of five Clusters each, plus the Blood Guards Keshik and six WarShips, for a total of 193 stars and 3,055 warriors; exclusive of those assigned to WarShip and naval crews.

Cloud Cobra
The Cobras field the smallest number of 'Mechs of any of the Clans, but the largest number of aerospace fighters (among their active non-naval toumen, at least).  Designed for quick, devastating offensive actions, the Cobras can suffer serious problems on the defensive--especially if weather prevents the use of their ASF arm.  However, they are the only Clan with recent experience at integrating other cultures into Clan society, so they may well succeed where others fail.

Able to field 30 Clusters in 6 Galaxies, the Cobras also have fifteen WarShips assigned to their naval forces.  Each Cluster contains seven stars of 'Mechs, two of Elementals, and six of ASF.

For their contribution to Revival, the Cobras decided to field two Galaxies of five Clusters each, plus the two Command Keshiks (at a strength of six stars each) and six WarShips for a total strength of 187 stars and 2,025 Warriors.

Coyote
The inventors of the OmniMech and the ATM launcher, the Coyotes are often characterized as Scientist-Warriors.  As a Clan, they have declined over the years, dropping from their status as a top-tier force to merely second-tier.  However, they are still a force with which to be reckoned.

Coyote galaxies tend consist of heavy and medium units, with one Assault Cluster and one light Striker Cluster rounding them out.  Each Cluster has an independent 'Mech command star, at the expense of a star of ASF.

The total Coyote toumen consists of 7 Galaxies with 35 Clusters, plus the three command keshiks--each of six stars.  Thirteen WarShips provide naval support for the Clan.

For Operation Revival, the Coyotes will field two Galaxies of five Clusters each, plus all three command keshiks and six WarShips.  This will allow the Coyotes to field 195 stars for a total of 2,050 Warriors.

Diamond Shark
As the merchant clan, the Sharks have acquired a reputation as consumate barginers and dealers in technology.  But that reputation hides the truth of the matter--for the Sharks remain Clan Warriors at heart.  Using their own unique Cluster organization, each Shark Cluster has 18 stars instead of the normal 15, making each overstrength compared to other Clans.  Each of their nine (9!) galaxies might consist of just three Clusters, but also fields a command formation known as a Skate.  Fielding six stars, this configuration gives Shark Galaxy Commanders a very flexible and potent force on the field.

Nine Galaxies contain a total of 27 Clusters, while 17 WarShips provide both combat and logistical support.  That logistical support may well make the difference between victory and defeat for the merchant Clan in the end, as the Sharks are bringing a far larger number of supply DropShips and JumpShips than any other Clan.

During Operation Revival, the Sharks will field 3 Galaxies of 3 Clusters each--a full seven of which are Elite--along with 11 WarShips, more than any other Clan except Snow Raven.  Total field strength is 207 stars with 2,340 Warriors.

Ghost Bear
The Bears are one of the strongest Clans in existence, fielding 8 Galaxies with 40 Clusters.  Each Bear Cluster has more Elementals than most other Clans field, and on the defensive no one is better than this Clan.  Utilizing swift, light 'Mechs to deploy their elemental forces, they also excel at lightning fast blitzkreigs deploying the armored infantry directly atop their opponents.  With 17 WarShips, the Bears Fleet is more than capable of supporting their operations both in the HomeWorlds and during Revival.

For their part in Operation Revival, the Ghost Bears will deploy three Galaxies of five Clusters each, with a Keshik assigned to each Galaxy.  A fourth Keshik serves as the Khans personal command, while six WarShips guard the skies above.  257 stars and 2,995 Warriors comprise the fighting arm of the Bear toumen in the Inner Sphere.

Goliath Scorpion
An oddity among the Clans, the Scorpions are often derided as senseless drug-users and hedonists by other Clans.  But this ignores their battlefield prowess, which is considerable.  Featuring combined arms down to the trinary level, Scorpion Clusters are extremely flexible formations capable of dealing with any threat--offensive or defensive in nature.

Holding themselves to a very high standard of honor, the Scorpions will almost always conduct their actions in accordance will zell.  However, one must remember that this Clan trained the Wolf's Dragoons--and they have the original SLDF training manuals.  One should expect the unexpected when facing them.

Featuring 6 Galaxies with 30 Clusters and 17 WarShips, the Scorpions are one of the smaller Clans.  However, for Operation Revival, they will contribute 2 Galaxies of 5 Clusters each and 6 WarShips, for a total of 176 stars and 2,138 Warriors.

Hell's Horses
The only Clan other than the Spirits to use combat vehicles in their fighting toumen is the Horse's.  Unlike the Spirits--who do so only because Kerensky decreed it--the Horse's believe that a well-designed, modern fighting vehicle will enhance their combat effectiveness.  That such a vehicle will be a 'force multiplier' for the Clan.

Organized in 7 Galaxies of 4 Clusters each--plus two Command Keshik Clusters--, each Horse's Cluster is overstrength, with a combined arms approach featuring 'Mechs, vehicles, Elementals, and ASF.  Many of their stars are in fact Novas, and the Horse's have adopted the ranks of Nova Commander and Nova Captain as official designations among their forces.  While the ten WarShips of Hell's Fleet seems weak, it includes four ships of at least battlecruiser strength.

For their part in the invasion of the Inner Sphere and the reestablishment of the Star League, Hell's Horses will contribute two Galaxies of four Clusters each--with a four-star Galaxy command unit as well, the two Command Keshiks, and six WarShips.  Total strength is 205 stars and 3,745 Warriors.

Ice Hellion
An interesting Clan, the Hellions are famed for their aggression--especially since they favor lighter, faster 'Mech designs.  Weak in infantry support, their units blend powerful 'Mech and ASF contingents designed to function in tandom.  Since they favor lighter designs, the Hellions have evolved a twist to zell--against heavier opponents, they have decided it is honorable for two or more Hellions to engage it simultaneously.  This should prove very difficult for the Inner Sphere to deal with.

At 6 Galaxies and 30 Clusters, the Hellions are a small Clan--but very, very aggressive in nature.  Their 13 WarShips provide adequete support as well.

In Revival, the Hellions will field two Galaxies of 5 Clusters each, two Command Keshiks (at three-stars each), and six WarShips; for a total of 178 stars and 1,760 Warriors.  Other than the Snow Ravens, the Hellions are the only Clan to deploy a McKenna class battleship into the Inner Sphere.

Jade Falcon
The strongest of the Clans of Kerensky, the Falcons are one of the proudest.  As aggressive as the Hellions, as conscious of honor as the Scorpions, and in some ways more conservative than the Bears, they seek to become the IlClan by cutting a path to Terra itself.

Eight Galaxies, with 41 Clusters and 23 WarShips comprise the Falcon toumen.  Each Cluster is arranged in the manner Kerensky mandated--updated for the times.  Three trinary of 'Mechs, one of Elementals, and one of ASF give Falcon Clusters a balanced force structure more than capable of engaging and defeating a Regimental Combat Team.

One of the few Clans that earned the right to deploy three Galaxies, the Falcon Expeditionary Force consists of 15 Clusters divided among those three, plus the Turkina Keshik and six WarShips.  Total strength is 271 Stars and 2,860 Warriors.

Nova Cat
Relying upon spiritual visions to guide them, the Cats are one of the more exotic Clans of Kerensky.  Despite this nature, they are one of the stronger of Kerensky's Clans, with 7 Galaxies and 36 Clusters.  33 WarShips give the Cats a naval strength second only to the Ravens--but the majority of the Cat Fleet consists of freighters and transports, not true fighting WarShips.  Fielding slightly fewer 'Mechs than most other Clans, each Cat Cluster has an equal number of 'Mechs and ASF, with a full trinary of Elementals for support.

On their return to the Inner Sphere, the Cats will deploy two Galaxies of five Clusters each, plus their Command Keshik Cluster and six WarShips.  Total strength is 186 stars and 2,015 Warriors.

Smoke Jaguar
Perhaps the most vicious of the Clans is the Jaguars.  Brutal in their dealings with their own civilan castes, this does not bode well for the inhabitants of their invasion corridor.  Favoring heavy and assault 'Mechs, the Jaguars disregard sublety for pure force in the attack.

Able warriors, they have prevailed in remaining among the strongest Clans despite their lack of strategic foresight.  Eight galaxies, of five clusters each, and 21 WarShips proves their might.

Earning the right to deploy three galaxies, the Jaguars will field 15 Clusters, two Keshiks (both of trinary strength), and six WarShips.  Total force strength is 255 Stars and 2,920 Warriors.

Snow Raven
With the largest naval Fleet among the Clans, the Ravens are relatively weak on the ground, but mighty in the air and in space.  They field six Galaxies, 31 Clusters, and 40 WarShips.  Each Raven Cluster contains an ASF Binary, a 'Mech trinary, a 'Mech command star, and three mixed trinary--each with a star of 'Mechs, a star of Elementals, and a Star of ASF.

For Revival, the Ravens deploy 2 Galaxies of 5 Clusters each, plus the Command Keshik Cluster and 11 WarShips.  Total strength is 201 stars and 2,375 Warriors.

Star Adder
A Clan on the rise is the Adders.  Of all the Clans, the Adders are perhaps the most pragmatic, seeing Kerensky as a great man, but still just a man.  They--along with the Wolves--see real warfare as far more than a series of trials, and will be ready and willing to break with the Clan honor against honorless foes.

Exceptionally weak in Elemental infantry, each Adder Cluster contains more 'Mechs than the Clusters of any other Clan.  Each Cluster contains four Trinary of 'Mechs, but just one Binary of Elementals and a second of ASF.  Still, with 7 Galaxies, 37 Clusters, and 28 WarShips, the Adders are proving themselves as rising stars among the Clans.

Dedicating two Galaxies of 5 Clusters each, two Command Keshik Clusters, and six WarShips to Revival, the Adders will field 223 Stars and 1,970 Warriors.

Steel Vipers
Long acknowledged as possessing the strictest training regime of any Clan, the Vipers have always produced quality warriors.  And yet, they have not been able to break into the top tier of Clans.  Currently, the Vipers are frustrated with the rise of the Adders, and seek to shove them back down and rise to take their place.

The Viper toumen consists of 7 Galaxies with 36 Clusters and 15 WarShips.  Like the Falcons, the Vipers hold to the traditional Clan formation of 45 'Mechs, 75 Elementals, and 30 ASF per Cluster.

In Operation Revival, the Vipers will commit two Galaxies of 5 Cluster each, the Command Keshik Cluster, and 6 WarShips.  Total force strength is 181 Stars and 1,930 Warriors.

Wolf
The Clan that Nicolas Kerensky joined is still to this day one of the leaders of the remainder.  Many Clans--and Khans--look to the Wolves for their guidance.  Impressed with the Scorpion methods for training the Wolf's Dragoons recon force, the Wolves have recently reformed their toumen along Scorpion lines, seeing the possibilities inherent in that flexibility.  This Clan will prove very difficult for the Inner Sphere to counter.

At full strength, the Wolf toumen consists of eight Galaxies and 40 Clusters, along with 19 WarShips.  Losses during the trials of refusal to stop revival resulted in some vacancies, but several sibkos were tested ahead of schedule, and once again the Wolves are at full strength.  Experienced warriors were transferred to the Galaxies assigned to Revival, while the green formations were left behind to protect Wolf holdings in the Homeworlds.

The Clan of Kerensky will deploy 15 Clusters in 3 Galaxies for Operation Revival, along with 6 WarShips.  Total strength is 255 stars and 3,042 Warriors.

I like this idea of units being frontline or paramilitary, as i have been looking at fitting the Clans into the KU and wondering how to do it effecitivly.  I would likely take a different path, but the designation of front and second line would be just that, a designation, with the game mechanics dictating the composition of units.  However, it is a good idea I had never considered.

A thought on WMDs: if this happens and the Clans go dishonorable all the way, think of what might happen: they turn on hapless JumpShips. Precious for the Inner Sphere, taking or destroying those one by one, the IS will turn dark in a rather short time. Some Clans have up to 3 Fredasas which are perfect for just that. Now, it could be a race between destroying Units with Nukes and losing your own economic basis, besides upsetting your own people by destroying many planets.

The Realms would be quite harmstrung when they lose worlds due to low supply and stuff. Only worlds that can sustain themselves would be good, but even then, seeing their overlords helpless..

Question is if the IS can destroy enough Warships to make them unfeasible for the Clans. I doubt that once the first nukes have flown.

Marlin makes a good point. Not too mention the fact that when the Clans do invade, they have the better part of a decade to do so from a position of safety. While they themselves are well versed in the layout and disposition of the Inner Sphere, the Great Houses haven't a bloody clue where the homeworlds - or the Clans' soft points - are.

This leaves a technologically sophisticated and utterly ruthless enemy the capacity to attack at will, without fear of reprisal to their supply or industrial centers. The only thing really working in the Inner Sphere's favor is the two year travel time from the Clan home worlds to the Inner Sphere. That really is the Clans' singular logistics-related Achilles heel.

If it turns out to All out war, though, the need for steady supply will become apparent to the Clans. And then there are Worlds closer to the IS. Even in Canon there were Stations along the Invasion route. Now, go to the Hansa or those Colony or Stations or find some other Planets and build a supply system there. Even some factories could be installed without much fear of IS aggression, of course with adequate protection. And then go after their Economic lifeblood, that can be done with far fewer forces (aka Warships and some Jumpers). Remember some Bug-Eyes to spy on their economic capacity and after some years the IS is ripe for the picking. Or so. ;)

The Clans have rebuilt and have no qualms about Orbital Destruction anymore, ugh.

I see nukes getting tossed around like mad and the IS expanding Js/WarShip construction earlier and harder than ever.  The F-C will create huge new facilities over Kathil, Delavan, Alarion, New Syrtis etc. away from easy attack, as will the DC near the FS border.  Desperate needs for ships will see FWL ship production soar as places like Ionus come online.

I think in the end that the Clans would be swarmed under by too many nuke and a buzzing IS industrial base.

This is really a major problem.
