This came to me when I was surfing on TVtropes. Since in the 3000s, there is no
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnitedSpaceOfAmerica, I wondered what it would take to make such a nation possible (read: I was stuck inside during a snowstorm and got really,
really,
really bored). I also wondered just how wanked I could make such a nation.
So if you think I'm going overboard, that's the point. Furthermore, if I appear to be ripping off another work of fiction, you're probably right.
That being said, here's the first part.
Humble Beginnings:
Not the Star League,
Thank You Very Much.
The Terran Alliance, for all its advancements and accomplishments, had many, many faults. The biggest one, in retrospect, was not being farsighted in the consequences of their haphazard colonization program on the future astropolitical situation. By surrounding themselves with the ‘displaced’ of Terra, they left no output for settling loyal colonies. It was only the fact that those powers were largely underdeveloped, more concerned with survival, and more interested in fighting each other rather than the Alliance which abandoned them, was what let the Terran Alliance survive into the Terran Hegemony. Before the Age of War began, James McKenna knew that if the vast stellar empires which surrounded the Hegemony banded together in an alliance, they could threaten the Hegemony with utter devastation. To prevent this horrible occurrence, he authorized a project to build a fallback position deep in the Periphery safe from attack by the Houses of the Inner Sphere.
In 2317, a handpicked group of ships, disguised as traders, jumped into the deep periphery to find suitable worlds to settle. Time passed as planets were found and either eliminated or considered for colonization. By a stroke of luck, they found three garden worlds almost seven hundred light-years past the area of space which would later become the Outworlds Alliance. The trio of worlds were called Sanctuary, Harvest, and Reach. Their proximity to the Galactic core gave them large amounts of precious metals needed for heavy industries.
In 2320, the first three colonization ships began the first of many trips into the unknown. They recharged in uninhabited systems to maintain secrecy as they moved into the abyss. The Endeavour, Marshall, Challenger reached their destination on March 15, 2323.
