I agree that attacking key worlds is probably the best strategy for the AFFS to do here and the chances of success are sufficient that it would probably be tried. Even if it wasn't a complete success, the Outback would be severely hurt but such attacks. (Also, to re-interate, the Albion Hussars are commands similar to LCTs: about 1 Mech battalion, 1 short regiment of armour and 1 infantry regiment).

To minimise risks, it would probably make sense for the AFFS to stage through the Capellan March and strike towards Panpour and Chirkof first, with a second thrust out from Kestrel/New Avalon. At that point there are reasonable odds that worlds will start turning their coats back to the Federated Suns or even that the Outback as a whole seeks a negotiated return.

Or of course, they might negotiate a semi-independent status before fighting even begins. There are several options here.

I'll probably see what I can work out of the Jihad first before looking at the post-Jihad in detail.

Good point.

Since most of his career is Jihad-related, I'll have to work that in, but Marsin is probably an important military leader in the Outback.

Instead it's temporary measures to hold the region together (albeit with an expanding idea of what constitutes the region) in the absence of coherent national government. By the middle of the Civil War Katherine is no longer exercising control over much of the Federated Suns, but Victor has not really imposed a coherent replacement government yet. And no one appears to be taking Yvonne seriously at all.

But they shouldn't act too soon or Katherine might decide they are against her and send some troops there.

By the middle of the Civil War, I don't know that Katherine had many troops free to send. The meatgrinders were in full swing by then, and reinforcements were pretty sparse.

I really like this. Given what the AFFS was able operate and achieve against the TC immediately following the Jihad, I don't see a problem with having a similar situation occur within the FS proper.

Even with the size of the Outback, the small overall number of strategically important worlds within its sphere means direct assaults will likely coral far more worlds back into the fold than invasion alone.

Depending on how you write your second act of secession, I can see the AFFS starving some of the more stubborn worlds into submission...

Well I have one better for you than the return of the Marsins. A quote from Handbook House Davion.

Quote
After the conclusion of the [Davion Civil] war, there was only one prince left in place—Prince Nuno Gutierrez on the Outer March capital of Filtvelt, who had remained completely out of the war—but the march noble and bureaucratic structures were still strongly in place.

Perhaps House Gutierrez could make its return here in your scenario. Now there isn't much said other than that about the whole episode but First Prince Alexander Davion did abolish the Outer March in 2541. So what happened to the Outer Princes? Captured? Exiled? Who knows but it is a story and a figure from the past you could use to unite the region. After 500 years though how much of a hold will the name have? Likely not much beyond a pure historical basis but hey it could be a start.

Another thing I'm going to be doing in Clarion Call is showing the effects of establishing a Periphery March in the Lyran State during the Federated Commonwealth era. Such a move could have, and in my story will, cause some in the Crucis March to call for a reestablishment of the Outworld March. This move could provide better representation in the national government while centralizing regional authority to facilitate a better life in the Outback. However the Davion State while giving lip service to such political maneuvering likely tabled it fearing a lose of control by New Avalon.

Two things for you to consider. Not to mention the Marsins of June, the old UHC, the Reins of Woodbine, etc, etc...

Can people hold a grudge for 500 years?  Ask the Taurian Concordat.  If they're still after territory that they lost in 2600, it's not much of a stretch for House Gutierrez to still be of some importance in the region, since they were deposed only ~40 years prior to the Reunification War.

True.

It's wide open. Depending on how you write the family history, who knows how the Gutierrez family intermingled with the rest of the Federated Suns over the course of 450+ years, or whether they survived in a position of prominence at all.

Speaking of the UHC. I'm actually a little surprised they remained as quiet and content with the Federated Suns as long as they have. I'm guessing New Avalon ensures old UHC worlds are well taken care of (and no surprise there, the UHC has Panpour counted among its numbers.)

Or sent elsewhere (which would allow them to survive up to now).
And after 500 years, they could have become a legend.

It was just a generic comment.
