People from the Rim Worlds Republic
« on: February 18, 2010, 03:40:44 PM »

I was just wondering what would be the dominant ethnic group in the Rim Worlds Republic?

A good question Ice. Many have speculated some Central Asian ethnicity ruled the Rim because of some VIPs including Amaris. This theory would almost create a New People of the Steppe that inhabited the Republic. Turkic peoples like the Mongols who have been historically nomadic would certainly make for an interesting BattleTech nation. However, that is only part of the story.

The vast expansion of the Republic under the Star League when it went from 70 worlds to over 240 most have seen substantial immigration. My theory has always been that a majority of this influx was from the Terran Hegemony whose people could share dual citizenship in both realms as House Amaris did. Since Terra is a multicultural hub you could suppose that every ethnicity was present out on the Rim. However you could also argue that the New People of the Steppe were reinforced by another infux of their brethren.

Of course the Scots (Somerset and reference of the Tartan Brigade) present in every BattleTech nation are here as well. ::) ;D

Rowe (the original founder of the RWR) may have been greek- he was from the planet Alexadria.

As Takiro pointed out there were Scots in the RWR.

Also many Scandanavians who, fleeing the DC's occupation of the Principality of Rasalhague founded worlds that eventually became part of the RWR (P1e. p. 17)

I's also agree there was probably a lot of central Asian influence and TH.

The one thing that was emphasized in canon sources is that the RWR was very ethnically diverse. That was beared out in the map that was posted in HB: MPS; those names were from just about every Terran culture imaginable, and far more hodgepodge than found even in other interstellar states.

And I doubt Hector Rowe was Greek. Alexandria was arguably named after the posh suburb in northern Virginia state, since the culture described in the sourcebooks seems to indicate influences distinctly Anglo over Hellenic. The Central Asian thing was mostly a show put on by Amaris to intimidate enemies rather than an indication of ethnicity. If anything the Usurper was a mix of British and Slavic blood rather than Mongol and Turkic, very much in line with his deceptive character.

I actually bothered to look up the surname Amaris over the past few days. Not only is it a real (if rare) name, it has an unexpected origin: Southern Europe. There are/were people with the last name Amaris from both Spain and Southern Italy. Some of them immigrated to the Americas, and there are Amarises currently living in both the United States and Colombia, and possibly other places as well.

If you ever happen to run into any of these people, please don't hold it against them.  :D
