The Mongoose

Roger Fawcett's stood alone on the bridge of his DropShip, the Mongoose. It was a fine craft - a custom Buccaneer design from the Federated Suns recently released with a number of improvements. The improved defense systems had been what attracted him to the new model. While the weapons still paled when compared against a military Assault Ship they were still impressive. Enough to handle any problem a merchant might be face.
Now, though, nearly everything was off-line. Engines, weapons, radar. The indicator for each system flashed a dull red. Even life support was operating at minimum capacity. About the only thing fully functional was the communications suite, set to constantly broadcast a distress signal. So far it hadn't mattered, though. Looking at the clock he noticed they only had two more days and hoped their luck changed before then.
A heavy sigh slipped from him, his breath white from the cold he hardly noticed any more. He ran his fingers over the control panel, feeling the heavy condensation that had settled there over the past week. It was lucky that the electronics were all carefully protected from such environmental hazards. If the water somehow got into the wires... well... the last thing they needed right then was some errant spark to cause an inferno. Few things were quite as bad as a fire in space.
With a light push he set himself adrift in the small bridge, aiming himself for another window on the other side of the room. His progress was slow, but then again there was no hurry. On the way he fished in his vest pocket with one hand, producing a half finished cigarette after few seconds. He placed between his lips and let it dangle there while he patted the rest of his pockets, eventually finding his lighter. A second later he lit up and took a long drag.
The harsh smoke was a nice change from the sterile air produced by the filters and he held it in for a few seconds before breathing it out from his nose. It helped to calm his nerves once more. Two days was a long time. Surely their signal would be heard by then. All they needed to do was wait until then. Simple.
By the time he reached the other window his cigarette was burned all the way down and he had regained his composure. He carefully snuffed the stub out on his boot before stuffing it into his pocket. Only then did he glance outside and notice the flames of another DropShip headed his way. A second later he heard a sharp beep indicating someone was trying to contact his ship.
With a strong kick he pushed his way back to the communication panel, opening the frequency while he pushed himself into the seat. "Hello? This is Captain Roger Fawcett of the Federated Suns Ship Mongoose. We've suffered a serious power failure and are in need of immediate assistance."
He waited for a response, watching the seconds tick by. It seemed to take forever and he found himself glancing back out the window at the engine plume to assure himself that the approaching DropShip was real. At last what he had been hoping for.
"Hai, we hear you captain," came the response at last. Roger couldn't help the sneer that formed on his lips when he heard the distinct accent of the Combine. "What is a Federated Sun ship doing inside Draconis Combine space?"
"I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about. My charts put the Combine another two jumps rimward," he said. "Seems I should be asking what a bunch of snakes are doing in the middle of the Federated Suns."
"Hai, I see the problem. Your charts are out of date, captain. These systems have just recently joined the glorious Combine which would make you the trespasser."
Rodger closed his eyes and sighed softly. "Whatever, are you going to render assistance or are you snakes as monstrous as everyone says?"
Again there was a pause before the response came. "A man begging for help would be wise to keep polite," the voice warned. "We will render assistance, but your ship and cargo are hereby claimed as spoils for the Combine."
"You can't-" he started to answer then bit his tongue. "Fine, but I demand that myself and my crew be sent back to the Federated Suns."
"We will take your *request* into consideration, captain. Until then kindly ready your ship to be boarded."
At that he immediately closed the communication link. Somehow he doubted that the snakes expected a response, but then again no further talking was necessary. For now he just needed to play along. Still he could hardly believe that at last his luck had turned for the better. It was just enough to bring a smile to his lips.
With a strong shove he pushed himself out of the chair and toward the back of the ship and nearly collided with his second in command. "Woah there captain. Was that a bite I heard you talking to?"
Rodger smiled broadly. "Sure was, Franz. Get our marines to their stations. We're going to have a little who's boarding who exchange."

Not really any plans to do so. It is kind of like the fictions that are ending up in the BT source books. Short little things that give a feel for the universe and setting without being very long.
