Tigershark, just because I say I don't believe, does not mean I have a theology.  It really is sad that those of a religious bent must believe that others must believe in order to feel comfortable with the universe.  I don't believe in ghosts, or fairys, or of the dark shadows of the bush, I don't believe people ascend, descend or reincarnate, I don't believe in allah, yaweh, god, jesus, buddah, thor, apollo or any of the other host of deities that folk have managed to conjure up over the years.

I JUST DON'T BELIEVE.  I would deeply appreciate it if you would quit saying otherwise, for I know myself.

My world is founded on rational evidence, on the care of my fellow humans, whatever they believe or don't, on the basis that we must all be treated the same and that no group's social or religious doctrine is better than any others and that a truly secular and atheist viewpoint is the safest course to stability and fair treatment for all.  I base my actions to others on being kind to all, unless you harm me and then all bets are off, not on a preconceived theology that dictate that if someone is not like me or does not do as I do they must be excluded.

We just are.  If that scares others so much that they need a myth with continuity issues that make BT look organized to help them get by day to day, then so be it, I truly feel sorry for them.

Oh and one more thing, science is not a belief system, science is evidence based, religion is faith based as it has no evidence to support it.  If you look up the scientific method you can gain a better understanding of the difference between the two.  Science needs evidence, evidence that can be repeatedly tested in order to be proven true.  Faith just needs you to believe in the tooth fairy.

You're not seeing it? I'm surprised.

Your world is founded on rational evidence as you put it. Unless you have a few PhDs in physics, mathematics and cosmology, you're taking the word of a scientist. You "believe" in what they're telling you with the same amount of faith as any churchgoer or people who "believe in the tooth fairy." You're awfully dismissive of others' beliefs when I doubt you're even well-educated in string theory, loop quantum gravity, black hole cosmology, etc.

Further, what "facts" do you believe as far as the cosmological model for the universe? There are several theories which have been presented, none of which are proven. You can only "believe" in one or the other, based on evidence. I'd call that as much a religion as any, wouldn't you?

FYI - here's a nice quote from Stephen Hawking: "I believe the universe is governed by the laws of science," he said. "The laws may have been decreed by God, but God does not intervene to break the laws." You should probably e-mail Hawking and inform him of your "tooth fairy" theories.

Instead of using my time on this thread and writing it all out myself.

Go here http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/RationalWiki_Atheism_FAQ_for_the_Newly_Deconverted#Is_atheism_a_religion.3F

It should help.

Obamacare a bust...

There are a few things that bother me about government programs such as Obamacare (A.K.A. Affordable Care Act) and what it ultimately leads to:

1. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Obamacare was Constitutional because having the Federal Government requires you, merely for existing, to buy a product or service like health insurance, was somehow considered a tax. What do you think would the general reaction of the court and media be if the Government required you to buy a gun for self defense?

2. The Obamacare website had 400 million dollars spent on it and it didn’t even come close to working. Did everyone or even anyone actually responsible for this disaster get fired? If the government can’t even do stuff like setup the health care website right even with the vast resources at their disposal, what makes you think they will fare better with things like national health care? In addition, Obamacare completely sidesteps the issue of addressing the issue of high medical costs.

3. The politicians lied when they said Obamacare would be cheaper and you could keep you own health insurance. Obamacare is less about making sure that you pay your own bills and more about making sure that you pay someone else’s bills. If the Federal Government is to get you to pay other peoples’ bills, you have to pay more and obtain coverage that you may not want or need. If a random number of people were asked if it was all right to be forced by the government to pay other peoples’ bills, I suspect I know what the vast majority would say :)

4. Obamacare is the worst kind of government program being a hybrid of a large government program and a huge unfunded mandate on the individual; in the future both of these parts will likely get larger and probably encroach more directly on our freedoms. Big government is the death of the middle class. In general, the “poor” get most of the benefits of government programs while paying the least into them while the “rich” get the least benefits of government programs while paying the most into them; the middle class normally can’t afford the massive amount of government programs and receive the least benefit from them, usually forcing them into being poor. I prefer a country with a low, middle and upper class as opposed to just a lower and upper class.

Whether you agree with some, all or none of my post, please leave the straw man arguments at the door…

Tuesday we have our benefits meeting. This is where I will find out how much my insurance is going to go up. I expect it to at least double, if not triple. I already live paycheck to paycheck. Any increase is going to cut into my already small discretionary budget.

Year-to-year, you're likely to see a 10-20% increase in a policy premium. Given that most plans are now unqualified for tax purposes, they will be offering an ACA "equivalent." Same money, much less in benefits and you pay more at the doctor's office for the same services.

Well I got the bad news and good news on my work-backed health insurance.

Premiums went up by 70% and max out of pocket went up by $1500.

Good news is the deductible went down by $500 and that 70% equals just to a $12.67 every pay period. Opted in for dental as may need work done on my teeth.
