Just heard one of the two reactors having problems is now leaking 1,000 times the normal radiation into the area. The effects of this quake will be felt for generations now. So, so sad.

Just seen the reactor 1 building blowing up, things looking very bad there now, although they are saying the reactor is still intact.

It was a coolant explosion I believe, or something along those lines.

Shit, man... this is really bad. Anyone has info on the other reactor? And a whole settlement wiped out by the tsunami too.

Right now it's looking like two, possibly three reactors going nova. They're doing all they can, but it's really starting to look grim. Body count already over 800.

Lets hope the seawater can cool at least one enough. Afterwards it is done for.

And I heard of over 1000 dead, possible are over 10 k as to the flooded settlements.

And what happens afterwards? Now they are saving energy, but will they continue to use nuke power?

Guess we can only hope that the meltdowns stay limited in effect. Otherwise..

Well they have expanded the evacuation zone to 20km's, which means evacuating around 300,000 people and are pooring seawater into 3 reactors now, things are looking bad now.

Another explosion happened at another reactor unit in Fukushima I today.
And this reactor unit reportedly runs on mixed uranium and plutonium fuel...
And a third reactor unit has also developed cooling problems.

Very not good  :-[

Death toll is over 1200, with about three times that reported missing. What a mess.

Apparently one of the reactor's has it rods completely exposed due to lack of coolant. Also, a number of US Service Members have suffered some radiation exposure (something like 6, but that number could be higher.)

Sad, sad stuff.

Well its 3 reactors that have had blasts (no's 1/2/3) whilst no4 has had a fire, also acording to reports the fuel rods in 4 are in a cooling pool which is now boiling. With radiation levels being the equivilant of getting 8 years worth in 1 hours although this is now dropping.

You'd figure a country as sophisticated, that sits right on the ring of fire, is volcanically active and as down right anal when it comes to personal accountability as Japan would have built a reactor complex capable of withstanding incredibly powerful earthquakes and other seismic catastrophes?

I know 8.9 isn't something to scoff at, but I have to wonder...

They are supposed to be rules but rules are just that and once Mother Nature decided to do something, there is very little we can do.

I am definitely praying for both the survivors and the families of the victims in this tragedy.

It's also important to bear in mind the changes occurring elsewhere in the world due to the earthquake. Unrest in the NYC area of the Indian plant, the closure of some German plants, etc.

It'll be interesting to see how the world community reacts. Nuclear energy was kind of in the process of seeing a minor rebirth. That's probably all but gone now. Still, without viable (acceptable) alternatives it'll be either more coal, gas or oil. I'm sure that's a great idea...
