Make friends with the lyran's and the republic Smiley Combine isn't looking for friends just targets
Build up are army as fast as can be done and stream line it so it can respond fast to attacks so as to appear not weak. Look for ways to improve the ecomony and try to lure companys to invest and build in nation since we aren't at war if we can at lest look strong enough to defend are selfs some companys might move here to get out of the firing line.

which do you believe would be better primarily for defense for the Protectorate? Heavy Aerospace assets or Heavy ground assets? I know both can be usefull the Aero primarily for the sake of limitting forces able to land on the ground and the Ground assets to defend not only vital locations but the planets of the protectorate on a whole.

I'd really say have more aerospace then ground force since most non major powers lack large amounts of aerospace craft but Ur still going to need a decent ground force for nothing else to defend the aerospace fighters on the ground from surprize attacks
For ground forces I'd go with hvy armor for defense with large inf garrsion forces and for response I'd go with striker and light horse reg's easyier to maintain in large numbers and fast at response .
For aerospace I'd find a meduim fighter and just buy alot of them Smiley
For heavier ground forces I'd recommand just hiring a Ex star league Heavy Assualt/Dragoon reg
O of some note theres a privateer unit thats based off one of the rims planets

May I suggest this equipment? I am an Outworlds Alliance fan so have some idea of costs and possible allowance of equipment to non Great House factions. It doesn’t get much poorer than the OA for equipment purchase.
Everything listed below was common equipment throughout the I.S. and normally or nominally used by the SLDF, ComStar, sometimes WoB. Most if not all is allowed (canon) in  the OA so it should not be an issue.

Base BattleMechs (Security Forces):

THE-N Thorn / 1,653,120 C-Bills
BMB-12D Bombardier / 5,636,511 C-Bills
CP-11-A Cyclops / 9,274,660 C-Bills

Field BattleMechs:

MON-66 Mongoose / 2,229,479 C-Bills
CHP-1N Champion / 5,741,600 C-Bills
BL6-KNT Black Knight / 7,136,938 C-Bills
ON2-M Orion / 7,735,000 C-Bills

Aerospace Fighters:

SPD-502 Spad / 1,538,183 C-Bills
IRN-SD1 Ironsides / 3,966,795 C-Bills

Aerospace and Ground Support:

RGU-133E Rogue / 2,303,680 C-Bills

Armor:

Chaparral / 2,195,500 C-Bills
Thor / 1,906,125 C-Bills
Magi / 3,585,867 C-Bills

Infantry Equipment:

TRO 2750 pg.154 thru pg. 160

Thank you both for the suggestions on forces and layout for units To&E. Another question, what do you all think the largest export from the Protectorate worlds would be? To me it would seem to make sence that it would be something like food stuff or perhaps some mineral that would be useful to other houses.

You might want to add textiles as from everything I have read no one in the Inner Sphere exports textiles; someone has to clothe the mass's.
Medical supplies, food stuffs as you stated, both as finished goods.
Much more or even all of that might be a strech for the Protectorate.

While I would imagine either the lyrans or the Hegemony would heavily export Textiles to varrious houses. I doubt it is one of those exports that would rank high on any houses list's. But it is a good idea of one to export.

I can see exporting raw material to the terran republic<- they got no cheap source  to get it from all the other realms have planets that haven't been mined out of resources to use
I can also see the rim producing cheap ammo later on doesn't take much to make missiles and ac ammo
also armor for tanks and stuff

That would make sence to me. Wouldnt take more than a couple months tops per factory to load up a couple merchant mules with munitions or other valuable war comodeties to ship to either the Republic, the lyrans or even the Davions, Cappelans and FWLer's.

Sorry, thought you were looking for something unusual to export. Thoughts were along the export of American textiles all over the world, very high in demand and price until clothing manufacturing was moved to China. Still brings in a decent price with the right label or logo on it but not what it used to.

Ok, raw ore's of any kind would be easy and cheap even if it has been cleaned or refined, but not finished. Terran’s, etc. would still have their factories even on a limited scale.

Still believe food and medicines would bring highest returns, but medicine may once again be a bit of a stretch for this area. It is hard to develop and most is expensive to manufacture. Not that producing weapons of war are cheap to develop or build but it takes a different type of manufacturing to be able to produce medicines, of course you could produce medical equipment which would be more in line with weapons of war and they bring in top dollar. With all the fighting in the IS I would think medical equipment would be in high demand by every House.
Well maybe not the Combine, but the rest would be interested.

Food medicine, and war materials seem to be the highest suggestions along with textiles for shipping to help bolster the Protectorate economy.

While i agree with Techwarrior that medicine would be a highly profitable one I also agree with you that it would be one that will be allot harder to produce than the other materials. Now obviously the biggest export partner would be the republic and probably the Lyrans at a close second. What about other periphery realms like say the Outworlds Alliance? Both nations are reletively close and both have a major threat in the form of the Dragon to deal with.

Would you attempt to sign shipping agreements with the Alliance? Joint protection agreements for Shipping lines, and possibly a full millitary treaty to better protect both nations from pirates and other threats? What about the other houses?

The Protectorate would probably focus on low tech items to export- Medicine seems like it might be a bit too advanced- they would also probably export a lot of raw materials-especially the exotic stuff - the rare earths, Germanium, Iridium, platinum- basically anything with an industrial use

At this point in time the OWA does not have a standing military-all they have are planetary militias- the AMC is not formed until the 2800s- so no help guarding shipments. As for materials- the OWA has almost no manufacturing so they would be interested in any and all finished goods the protectorate could provide- the problem is they probably don't have much of a way to pay for it unless you are interested in 2 chickens and a cow....

Cheap labor is a Rim World staple. Wink And since the Protectorate is a Terran possession and the New Republic needs resources in the form of raw materials for its vast industry that is probably their biggest "industry" per say. Mining exports. In return the Rim would receive finished goods from the Republic like textiles probably not too much high end tech though.

I would do one thing and that is make a small group of explorers and send them into space to look for additional hidden planets with factoriers that aramis had hidden away they might be small and outdated by star league standards but there still factories that the Rim Protectorate can either move back to the more settled part of the rim or offically colonize the planet and add it to there realms income .

Point of fact, I believe unless you want to fall into the trap that BT did to itself (in my opinion) someone has to figure out how the Periphery States have all the equipment they have without any money, manufacturing, fairy godfather or mother. No one will trade Mechs for chickens as far as I know.
I have asked this question numerous times and have not found a good answer.

Well first the Periphery States do have significant manufacturing capability in 2785.  They were rebuilt after the reunification war as per the canon material- the MOC for example rebuilt to such an extent that it managed to compete with the FWL's industries in the early 2600s and even cause the FWL economy to go into a recession as a result (see HBHM or HMSB for full details).  The Periphery states also had a lot of weapons manufacturers- the SL encouraged IS companies to open factories in the Periphery- one example is from TR3050U which mentions Paulina Weapons building the Cyrano in the TC (a factory which continued production well into the 2800s).  The periphery states also had their own industries - some of the secret factories set up to supply the divisions involved in the Periphery uprisings in 2765, factories that covertly operated after the reunification war (VMI in the TC) or companies founded after the uprisings but before the collapse of the SL (TTI in the TC).

Another source of materials was the survivors of the Periphery mech Divisions which fought in the uprisings. The Taurian Guard, Taurian Velites, Concordat Commandos, Canopian Fusiliers and Alliance Grenadiers all have histories which indicate that they were probably originally some of the Periphery Mech Divisions which fought in the uprisings and then became the basis for the militaries of the Periphery states after the fall of the SL.

Sure the SL did a lot of things to screw the periphery states- that is why they lost so many worlds despite the fact that they have managed to avoid the open and prolonged combat that ravaged the IS.  But the major periphery states (Especially the TC and MOC) are not in such poor shape that they can not support and industrialized society or equip their militaries.

I am not arguing just to argue or trying to upset anyone, I’m just on this quest to understand.
I probably should have joined the Taurian Concordat instead of the Outworlds Alliance.
All right back to the Magistracy of Canopus, looked and looked couldn’t find the reference I was looking for but found all this in short order.

2578: Taurian Concordat, The Rim Worlds Republic, and the Magistracy of Canopus resisting all efforts to be brought into the League by diplomatic means, war is declares between the Star League and the Periphery States.

2588: Mitchell Calderon dies, Marantha Calderon named Protector of the Taurian Homeworlds, Magistracy of Canopus is conquered, Melissa Humphreys appointed Military Governor of the Magistracy of Canopus

http://www.classicbattletech.com/index.php?action=text&page=Periphery_Timeline

2597: Reunification War completed, the Periphery States surrender, becoming territories ruled by the Star League.

Believe this is 3040:
The Magistracy Armed Forces suffers from the loss of many key industrial centers in the last two centuries. In particular, the ability to produce BattleMechs and 'Mech replacement parts is virtually nonexistent in the Magistracy. At present, only two BattleMech production facilities remain intact in Canopian space. Located on Canopus IV and Duncanshire, these two centers have a very low annual output (less than 60 machines per year), and produce mostly Locusts, Wasps and Stingers. The only medium-sized BattleMechs produced within the Magistracy are Shadow Hawks, but usually no more than ten per year. Production for armor, AeroSpace Fighters, and motorized vehicles run roughly 30 each per year.

http://iron-brigade.org/btech/html/page.php?fichier=moc.htm

Two questions;
1.   Read that the Magistracy of Canopus fought a war with the Capellan Confederation and lost badly, retaining only about a half dozen planets. Is this correct?
2.   If quote from 3040 is canon or close to canon, I for one would be thrilled after fighting a major war to have that kind of resources. So is it canon or not?

This is from 3025. Periphery 1e to be precise. It is not 100% accurate- the loss of industrial centers is correct- it refers to the from the early 2800s to present when many industrial centers were destroyed- prior to that the MOC did have an industrial capability- probably just enough to survive on but very little excess capability so as facilities were destroyed they quickly ran into shortages.

The battlemech production is probably correct at a total of 60 machines max per year, mostly wasps, stingers and locusts.  The armor production is also some what reasonable at 30 machines per year (I would say 10 Manticores and 20 pikes per year).  The aerospace production is just plain wrong- the MOC only has about 100 aero fighters- production is probably more like 1-2 per year.

Quote

1.   Read that the Magistracy of Canopus fought a war with the Capellan Confederation and lost badly, retaining only about a half dozen planets. Is this correct?

No. The MOC fought the CC during the andurien succession, but they did not lose any planets to the CC.  The MOC has 35 worlds in 3025, down from a high of 65 in 2750.

Quote
2.   If quote from 3040 is canon or close to canon, I for one would be thrilled after fighting a major war to have that kind of resources. So is it canon or not?

See above for my comments on the quote.  The MOC did retain all of this production capability after the war with the CC.

The problem with the Periphery is that too many people only read the line about the Periphery being backwards and poor. The truth is that the periphery is not easily catagorized- unfortunately this was more true in the earlier source material (lately the entire periphery has been portrayed as poor and backwards)- which resulted in a far richer and more interesting periphery as you had everything from poor backwards farmers to societies as advanced as the SL, and everything in between.  Which is something we are trying to retain here.

well actualy if i had a good production base but limited food stuff and I was trying to avoid war with my neighbors I would trade Mechs, armor and fighter to a neighboring state for food like cattle and chickens. A mech can kill a hundred men while a herd of cattle can feed a thousand if taken care of properly.

I agree on the foodstuff idea of trade, it is just that in the BT Universe those that have food and no Mechs generally die or end up loosing their food to those that do have Mechs. Possibly Davion space works a little differently in the spirit of Free Trade, but from what I have seen of the rest of the BT Universe you only have what you can protect. At least in the long run. That includes the Clans for all their vaunted ideals.

Man sure are a lot of questions regarding the Protectorate from you Rainbow 6. If we are talking end of 2785 not much. Details can be found in FM Terran Republic 2785. I don't want to get into future development yet.

These transfers are hard to read.  Can you have a mod edit out extra copies of userbars & signatures?

Quick and dirty copy right now Mutt. I actually have to go do something right now. Would appreciate it if you could copy the rest and I could come back and clean them up.  ;)

There are only three more left to do from the old board. You'll see them as unlocked.

I hear ya, it is a little sloppy here for now but I'll be back to clean it up. Transfer is complete however.

Isn't this the Third Transfer?

I think Tak has plans to bring in the WoB much sooner than in canon...
