The Society and each Clan
« on: February 04, 2016, 10:15:58 PM »

Like a cancer the Society has spread throughout Clan space for some two hundred plus years. Dedicated to the overthrow of the Warrior Caste and the establishment of Nicholas Kerensky’s true vision they have penetrated every single Clan. Now some Clans we know (Ghost Bear – familial bonds, Steel Viper – rigid scientist caste, & Smoke Jaguar – overbearing warriors, all three had little representation in the Society) [Coyote - perhaps the most pervasive, Jade Falcon – many Society references, Burrock – Dark Caste ties, all three indicate strong ties to the Society] but others not so much. Now I am concentrating on 3052 and I want to hear what you think. I have listed each Clan below. Tell me your thoughts.

Blood Spirit
Burrock
Cloud Cobra
Coyote
Diamond Shark
Fire Mandrill
Goliath Scorpion
Hell’s Horses
Ice Hellion
Jade Falcon
Nova Cat
Smoke Jaguar
Snow Raven
Star Adder
Steel Viper
Wolf

I think an argument can be made that the Society (mostly) were absent from Clan Goliath Scorpion.

"Having avoided most of the brutal fighting in the assaults on Circe and New Kent, Clan Goliath Scorpion was positioned as the second-largest Clan in the Homeworlds.  The Clan was one of the few successful ones to emerge from the Wars of Reaving, having Absorbed the remains of the Ice Hellions and established a forward position on the cusp of the Nueva Castile worlds."  (Wars of Reaving, pg. 157)

"Upon claiming their isorla, the Cobras discovered why the Scorpions had put up a spirited defense. Scorpion scientists had begun experimenting with the integration of Eridani Light Horse genes into the Clan’s legacies. While not using them as formal genetic partners, the Scorpions were testing the combinations of various sequences with Scorpion Bloodnames in an effort to infuse the bloodlines of the ancient Star League into the Clan’s own. What was worse was that the Scorpion’s leadership and most of the Clan Council were unaware of the testing."  (Wars of Reaving, pg. 158).

This passage shows that the Scorpion Scientists had very different goals and ambitions than those of the Society--and I would suggest that if the Scorpions had purged the ranks of the Scientist Caste in an effort to remove the Society, there would be little chance of this 'experiment' remaining undiscovered to the leadership.

"The Cobras found only half of the Scorpions’ touman present at Roche when they began their assault."  (Wars of Reaving, pg. 158).

Fifteen Scorpion Clusters (with an average strength of just over 41% of TO&E) survived to escape to conquer Nueva Castile and form the Escorpion Imperio.  The Star Adders had 37 existing Clusters following the Wars, while the Cloud Cobras had 15 surviving units (after fighting half the Scorpion Touman on Roche).

This means (to me, at least) that the Scorpions had at least thirty Clusters after the conclusion of the Wars of Reaving.  Possibly more, since the Scorpions provided nearly a full-strength Cluster of solahma Warriors as cadre for the newly formed Imperio Guards of Omega Galaxy (not included in the above tally of Clusters, since they are a post-Escorpion Imperio creation).

Expanding their Touman from 27 to 30 (at a minimum, and possibly as high as 36!!) Clusters during the extreme conflicts and 'no-holds-barred' attitudes of the Wars of Reaving suggests, to me, that Society infiltration was quite limited. No other Clan (not one) increased the size of the Touman during the Wars.  Except the Scorpions.

And then they lost it because of this 'blunder' by renegade Scientists pursuing something that the Society would have considered a waste of time.

That is my evaluation, Takiro.

Excellent masterarminas!

Your conclusions about Goliath Scorpion make sense to me cause on their face the Clan [MY OPINIONS] is resource poor, technologically inferior (if you look at their RAT only Blood Spirit seems to be worse off), and obsessed with Seeking so as you quite correctly point out they have different priorities. Plus aside from the general mention of Tokasha I can find no known Society bases in their territory. I'd estimate their infiltration by the Society was minimal at best with 5 to 10 percent of the Scientist Caste (closer to five percent) being affected.

More please!!

Okay, I've gotten a pretty good read on many of the Clans especially Goliath Scorpion thanks to masterarminas but a few stick in my mind as question marks.

Ice Hellion - Personality wise I always sense a rebellious attitude from this Clan but their rash actions could scare off? Scientists whose experiments to heighten the speed of combat forces would be a fine addition to the Society. This specialty of course runs into their tendency for ill timed actions which the Society is very much against. I can't find any major bases in their territory per say but by Clan standards their garrisons are pretty thin. The amount of worlds they have compared to their available forces seems out of whack. A lot of room for the Society to hide.

Hell’s Horses - Since the Society is out of the box thinkers would they embrace Vehicles like the Horses to augment their forces? Not the richest Clan certainly they do maximize their resources and personnel something the Society would want to do. The Horses also seem very approachable and cooperative especially when it comes to Coyote and Wolf.

Concerning the Mandrills, the Society, Bandit Caste, and Coyotes made short work of them during the War of Reavings. Kindraa Faraday-Tanaga was destroyed on Atreus by the Jaguar and a good chunk of Mattila-Carrol was destroyed on Marshall by the Bandit Caste. The Coyotes themselves slaughtered the remaining Mandrill Warriors on Shadow if I remember correctly.

Culturally, Mandrill Warriors were very close to their lower castes, with Warriors helping their lower castes when needed; lone exception being the Sainze.

Thanks James Tanaga!

To me the Kindraa add another layer of oversight the Society would not want to deal with. However the fractured nature of the Mandrills might make penetration by the Society all the more possible. As such there could be a varying degree of success but with limited resources such operations may have been deemed to have had little value. Attacks on the Kindraa as you point out may have been assisted by Society infiltration but I doubt there was much. Overall like the Goliath Scorpions I would say there was a Low amount of Society activity here.

Phelan's assertions made in The Clans Warriors of Kerensky backs your assertions as well. The bond between warrior and civilian is indeed strong except with Kindraa Sainze "who value individual honor and consequently have a poorer relationship with non-warrior members." It also says "the scientist caste lacks the pooling of resources that has allowed other Clans to make technological leaps" which confirms the added Kindraa oversight. The Freeborn DNA rumors (alleged used to prevent inbreeding of Trueborn lines) is another factor which the Clan and all Kindraa would jealously guard thus further preventing Society influence.
