Back to the Badlands
« on: May 19, 2013, 05:17:43 PM »

Hey guys, its been a while I know but I’m looking to get back into the swing of things with a Taurian story. Entitled Back to the Badlands it will spot light a Taurian attempt to liberate the Pirate’s Haven and restore said Star Cluster to the Concordat. Set in the Clarion Call universe (3052 era) the impetus for the tale is a mysterious benefactor from St. Ives who aids the ambitious Jackson Dunn in reclaiming the region. Along the way our heroes will have to deal with a paranoid Concordat Protector and Pirates, of course. So I’m looking for ideas, information, and all sorts of input on this endeavor. Here is what I got so far.

History of the Badlands (to be referenced in the story)
- This aptly named region of space has few inhabitable worlds
- Many planets are barren rocks irradiated by the tightly group stars of this cluster
- The Taurians may have become interested in this region on their spinward flank. Recognizing this unique stellar region was a potential base for either power the Concordat quickly funded efforts to explore the Cluster
- Idea of an unassailable bastion for the Taurians
- Was it a possible fall back position for the Concordat
- Too far from the Davion border to raid them?? Borders then compared to now
- Colonization of the Badlands occurred just before the Reunification War
- Four Taurian worlds within two jumps (Armington, Estuan, Verdigreis, Csomad) became Federated Suns possessions at the end of the Reunification War
- Lorkdal became the second planet colonized prior to the outbreak of the 1st SW
- When did the Badlands break away and why? Were they conquered by foreign pirates or did native Taurians committed to banditry secede?

Notes on the Cluster (based on real life parallels and known BT info)
- Stunning geographic formations
- Difficult conditions for life
- Water and agriculture must be imported
- Some mineral wealth that was never fully explored
- Native population include; American Indians (Lakota), Spanish & Argentinean, Canadian, and New Zealanders.
- Mostly low tech civilizations preyed upon by their pirate overlords
- Little industry, keep running by stolen parts and jury rigged equipped

Characters
- Lamar Bullock is a free trader from St. Ives with commercial interests in this region. Eliminating the Haven would boost his business out look. In reality he is a FedCom agent, codename Matador.
- Jackson Dunn, related to the founder of the Far Lookers, the so-called Marquis* of Dumassas which is the ancient lord of the area displaced by the pirates, advocates resettlement of lost Taurian worlds

Forces (These battalion sized ‘Mech formations except for the Asterion are assembled for this operation)
- Visionaries, called by the Marquis* these volunteers are militant Far Lookers
- Mavericks, aka the unbranded escaped Taurian slaves and adventurous loners
- Posse, vigilantes out for justice who look to make pirates pay
- Minotaurs, gladiatorial unit who seeks to establish a presence on Solaris
- Repentant, Periphery BattleMech Division legacy, who went rogue, now back
- Asterion, mercenary aerospace wing whose arrogance and skill is renowned

* I choose the title Marquis to pay homage to DS9 ;)

Let me know what you think gang!

for claridication, it's Maquis, not Marquis, and they were based on the French Resistance of WWII

I am aware of the spelling difference. I thought Marquis might be an appropriate French title for a border area. I was trying to come up with the leader of a Taurian Union which seems to be their interstellar governments subdivision but little information exists save for the map appearances. Suppose I could have gone with a lesser Protector (such as Guardian, Defender, etc.) To be honest I am not even sure what the Taurian titles of nobility are.

I was not aware of the significance of the Maquis as a WW2 resistance force in France. I'll have to find more info on that.

In French, Marquis is the title of the noble who has power over a "Marche" or a "Marquisat".
