Title: Filling the Gaps (Clan OmniMechs)

Alright Blacknova and Master Arminas have gotten me going on the Clans for Clarion Call which is different from their stuff but the similarities get my attention. One of the things I was going to have the Clans do as a unified group at the direction of Ulric was a Program (name needed) to fill out their OmniMech chassis. Justification will come from the failure of Operation Revival in part do to poor logistics. This program will give the Clans the widest possible selection of war machines with which to complete the task. Hopefully it will optimize Clan battle capabilities and maximize their technological edge over the InnerSphere. The time period of course is 3052 just after the Truce of Tukayyid as in the story.

The three types of OmniMech for each chassis (20 through 100 tons) will larger be determined by engine as you will see.

Type 1. Zombie. Arguable the most familiar to everyone these machines will feature a standard fusion engine while maintaining reasonable speed. Advantages include a lower price tag and higher endurance. These Mechs take a licking and keep on ticking. An example would be a 100 ton Omni with a 300 engine with a decent amount pod space. The Blood Kite at 90 tons would be a good canon example.

Type 2. Speedster. The fastest OmniMech chassis are expensive but their maximum speed profile gives them a big advantage which many warriors prefer. While more vulnerable than their slower brethren these Mechs still carry reasonable amounts of pod space with better heat dissipation rates thanks to their massive engines which can carry more integral heat sinks. The terrifying Executioner (Gladiator) is an excellent canon example.

Type 3. Assailant. When offense is favored above all these apex predators with their massive amounts of pod space are the clear choice. Their extra light engines maintain reasonable speed while their huge arsenal decimates opponents. While they maybe vulnerable few foolish enough to challenge them will survive their assaults. The Dire Wolf (Daishi) with over half its mass devoted to pod space is a good example of this type.

So I’d like to get your input before I start putting together design challenges for the 21 spots that need filling. Thoughts?

Your other option is just to bring forward the development of the Omni's that came out in later TRO's.  It's what I am doing, smacks of laziness, but get the job done with art.

Way ahead of you Blacknova as this is 3052 and certain Mechs like the Nova Cat, Blood Asp, Crimson Langur, and Savage Coyote are yet to be fielded. However since they fill a specific unfilled niche their development will be sped up as part of the program.

Also it should be noted that there are certain design conflicts which have to be sorted out. Designs that fill the same niche under this program. Like the 65 ton bracket which is completely full especially when it comes to the Assailants (Priority Pod Space). The venerable Hellbringer (Loki) will be going up against the new Ebon Jaguar (Cauldron-Born). Both are 65 tons with 325XL (5/8) while the Loki has 28.5 tons to the Jaguar's 30 tons. Series of combat trails will determine the continued production but I'm not sure who that will be yet. Love to get your input!

Same thing for 50 ton Assailant between the Huntsman (Nobori-Nin) 50 tons, 250XL (5/8/5), 23.5 tons pod space and the Nova (Black Hawk) 50 tons, 250XL (5/8/5), 16 tons pod space.

At 45 tons you have 3 existing competitors for 2 spots. Ice Ferret (Fenris), 360XL (8/12), 9.5 tons pod space or Mongrel (Grendel), 315 XL (7/11/7), 13.5 tons pod space or Shadow Cat, 270XL (6/9/6), 17 tons pod space. One is your Speedster and another is your Assailant. While the other is replaced by a Zombie design not yet present.

40 tons is a log jam with 5 designs for 3 spots. The Battle Cobra is your clear Zombie at 40 tons with a 240 engine (6/9)   and 14 tons pod space. This leaves the Coyotl [40 tons, 280XL (7/11),    15.5 tons] to face off against the Pouncer [40 tons, 240XL (6/9/5), 15.5 tons pod space] for the Assailant but I suppose the Pouncer since it is in production would win unless the the Coyotl was bought back. For 40 ton speedster the Phantom [40 tons, 360XL (9/14), 6.5 tons] squares off against the Viper (Dragonfly) [40 tons, 320XL, (8/12/8), 8.5 tons].

Hmmmmmm.

For myself, I believe that speed (combined with the range of Clan weapons) kills.  Reasonable speed, that is.  Throughout history, real-life tank designers have been torn between three competing objectives:  a) speed, b) protection, and c) firepower.

With Clan OmniMechs is quite possible (for the first time in BattleTech) to obtain all three in a fast enough, protected enough design with enough firepower to deal with most threats. 

Which means when I design a Clan OmniMech, I am looking for the fastest speed which allows for maximum (or near-maximum) armor protection and a good payload of weaponry and equipment.  At least for front-line 'Mechs with Clan XL engines.  Standard engines are so very much less expensive that you can generally afford two or three standard engine designs for an XL design of the same weight.  Of course, the standard engine designs are slower, but can generally carry just as much armor and weapons as the faster XL designs.

That gives me two options . . . the highly expensive front-line OmniMech designed for the Clan's best Warriors and cheaper (but still hard-hitting!) slower second-line designs for the rest.

Both are 60-ton designs, although the Desert Tiger is faster (6/9/0 vs. 5/8/0) and has slightly more pod-space (23 tons vs. 21.5 tons).  Both have the same amount of internal structure and armor (10.5 tons ferro-fibrous), although the Obsidian Mantis is slightly more survivable because it lacks that XL engine.

The largest difference is in the price.  8,041,200 C-Bills vs. 17,961,200 C-Bills.  You can afford 2.23 Obsidian Mantis Primes for the price of a single Desert Tiger Prime.  223 OMPs for the same cost as 100 DTPs.

And the ONLY difference in payload between the two (and heat sinks, for that matter) is that the Obsidian Mantis lacks an AMS and its ammunition.  Otherwise, both carry identical firepower with the same heat dissipation capacity.

I've just posted the Primes of each, but the pattern is clear.  Do you pull out all the stops and spend twice the money on a single OmniMech, or do you make do with cheaper, slower OmniMechs that can you buy more of?  Or some mix of the two?

Those are the questions we should be asking.

I'll hold off on posting any actual designs until I see if there are any more criteria for the 21 possibilities mentioned.

Is there going to be a generalized category trying to balance all three factors though?

While firepower/speed/armour are the trinity of battlefield how do you want to address cost issues?

Again thanks for the design fitz but lets hold off on design submission while we talk things out.

Good questions drak. The goal of this project is to produce a choice for each Clan and each Mechwarrior which will fulfill the potential of the OmniMech. If you want survivability, quantity, ease of manufacture, and low price tag per each unit your choice will be the Zombie. Some Clans like Blood Spirit and Fire Mandrill might not have much of a choice and be forced into these machines by their poor resource situation. However, my research shows that the Steel Vipers did very well using these types of machines to fill out their touman. See the Battle Cobra and the Crossbow.

Some Clans like the Ice Hellion Clan will favor speed so much they will go with the expensive, quality, harder to manufacturer, but more vulnerable Speedster. Can they afford such a choice? The Wolf Clan under Natasha and Phelan have embraced this blitzkreig philosophy with designs like the Linebacker for example.

However there is also a third choice using your example of 60 tonners. The Mad Dog (Vulture) is the 60 ton Assailant with a 300XL (5/8) and 28 tons pod space (almost half your mass reserved for weapons) at a base cost of 13,032,000. Price falls in the mid range between your two examples shown but has that third major consideration firepower. The Smoke Jaguars, and to a lesser extent the Coyotes, are perhaps the best examples of this kill or be killed philosophy.

So to answer your questions there will be no generalized category to balance all three factors rather a warrior and his Clan will have every choice possible which is the true potential of the OmniMech. The objective is to give everyone a choice as well as a fall back position. Zombies can also be used as replacements for combat losses by Clans hurt by devastating losses. Hint hint Smoke Jaguars.

Cost issues will likely see the Zombie cost the least with the Speedster costing the most. Mid range cost will be the Assailants.

My point, Takiro, is that there really isn't three categories:  there are two.  High-end high-cost  faster units (with XL engines), and low-end low-cost slower units (with standard engines).

I get what you and drak are saying but take a look at your example. The Mad Dog clone is an assailant not a speedster in my definitions. Why cause that 60 ton Mad Dog isn't as fast as it could be. Yes the cost is high for said clone but put a 360 xl on there and two things will happen.  Cost will increase and pod space will decrease. That's a Speedster.

Plus to make your point you reduced the 60 ton zombie to a 4/6. It should be a 5/8. Then you'll see pod space of a speedster.

Yeah, I did the same thing with the Desert Tiger/Obsidian Mantis, above.  Why?  Because any standard-engine 'Mech is GOING to be slower than an XL-engine 'Mech of the same tonnage and (approximate) pod-space. 

Desert Tiger/Obsidian Mantis:  6/9/x vs. 5/8/x; full armor; 23 tons pod-space vs. 21.5 tons pod-space.

Mad Dog Clone/Mighty Mouse:  5/8/x vs. 4/6/x; full armor; 31 tons pod-space vs. 29 tons pod-space.

If you try to get the same speed on a standard engine, it is just too lop-sided in favor of the XL designs . . . Mad Dog Clone (XL engine, 5/8/x) vs. Obsidian Mantis (standard engine 5/8/x) are the same tonnage and same speed, with the same protection (OM has slightly greater survivability thanks to the SFE), but there is a full 9.5 tons difference in pod-space (31 tons vs. 21.5 tons).

We hit on that a little earlier JP. I'm trying to incorporate everything that could have been in development in 3052. The Society's Mechs are an interesting thing I'll have to consider. As the storyline is being changed significantly in Clarion Call. I'll take a look at the Wulfen.

Master Arminas how about this basic design rule for this exercise. Speedster OmniMechs will test the design limits of their chassis movement (max MP for tonnage) while Assailants and Zombies are to be -1 MP from that base. So for example 100 ton Mech would be equipped with 400XL, a 300 XL and a 300 standard engine respectively.

Modify the Wulfen by Removing the Stealth armor and using a conventional 300XL Engine and it would fit right into 3052.

Took a hard look at your suggestion JP but unfortunately the need doesn't exist at the 30 ton chassis. The Arctic Cheetah (Hankyu) at 30 tons with a 240XL (8/12/6), and 9.5 tons pod space fills the Speedster role for now and the Kit Fox (Uller) at 30 tons    with a 180XL (6/9), and 16 tons pod space fills the Assailant. Just need a Zombie now. I'll keep the Wulfen as a future replacement for the Arctic Cheetah (Hankyu). Thanks!

1. What is overall name of our little project going to be?? (I've noted Ice's suggestion)

2. Names for the OmniMech types that match said project. (for example if we stick with Zombie would it be the Monster Program with the Vampire = Speedster and Werewolf = Assailant)

Okay lets talk Clan preferences before we wrap this discussion up. Like to hear your thoughts and opinions on what each Clan in 3052 likes to field of these 3 Omni types (6 Zombie Clans, 5 Speedster Clans, & 6 Assailant Clans). Give me the reasons for your opinion as well. Like existing Mech designs produced, engineered, or appearing in their touman. I've filled in all 17 with my feeling on how they stack up and remember this isn't a perfect fit folks as every Clan is going to have exceptions to the rules in its touman. Discuss!!

Blood Spirit - Zombie (starved for resources this Clan with its Blood Kite falls solidly here)
Burrock - Zombie (resources stretched despite some dirty dealings)
Cloud Cobra - Zombie (resource poor and developing the Stalking Spider)
Coyote - Assailant (looks like the Coyotes always prefer Pod Space on their designs rather than speed or protection)
Diamond Shark - Assailant (development of the Grendel and the presence of the Adder, Nova, & Mad Dog)
Fire Mandrill - Zombie (just from a resource point of view I've put them here)
Ghost Bear - Speedster (main designs like the Fire Moth, Viper, and Executioner put them in the Speed Demon philosophy)
Goliath Scorpion - Zombie (Second Line Mechs in Front Line service and Battle Cobra is favored Medium)
Hell's Horses - Speedster (speed trumps pod space here)
Ice Hellion - Speedster (duh on this one as this is the speed Clan)
Jade Falcon - Assailant (close call, excellent design mix between pod space and Speedsters)
Nova Cat - Assailant (looking over their designs like the Nova Cat I've concluded they like themselves Pod Space)
Smoke Jaguar - Assailant (kill or be killed makes sense they try to carry the most firepower)
Snow Raven - Assailant (just enough wealth to field Omnis focusing on Pod Space)
Steel Viper - Zombie (Crossbow and Battle Cobra both standard engines)
Star Adder - Speedster (the new Blood Asp tells me that this Clan likes the rapid assault provided by these fast machines)
Wolf -Speedster (under Natasha and Phelan getting rid of the Timber Wolf a speedster for a Linebacker more of Speedster)

Ghost Bears are Speed Demons. The Dasher, Dragonfly and Gladiator are thier Primaries, with the Main four Heavies being spread pretty evenly, favoring the vulture to a degree.  With what little we know about the Burrocks they seemed to be pretty variable due to lack of Resources, but favored big Hits on fast platforms.

JP given the evidence I'd have to agree with you on the Ghost Bears. I figured they'd be a Assailant (Max Pod Space for their Omnis) but they look to favor Speed.

Burrock I would tend to believe that they'd be a Zombie heavy Clan because of their resources even though their designs were said to favor mediums. Speed could be a possibility however.

Jade Falcon is a tough call. Their new generation of Omnis coming out is split between the Fire Falcon & Black Lanner (Speedsters) and the Night Gyr & Turkina (Assailants). Looking back at their pre-Tukayyid RAT we got the Kit Fox and Hellbringer (Assailants) with the Summoner & Gargoyle (Speedsters) as favored machines. With such a mix it is tough to choose one philosophy for the Clan but I'm feeling that they'd prefer more pod space than speed. So I'm going to place them in the Assailant category.

Research on Diamond Shark also splits between the Speedsters (Warhawk & Gargoyle) who max out their assault chassis speed and the Assailants (Koshi, Adder, Nova, & Mad Dog) who favor pod space on their lighter frames. The Grendel (or Mongrel if you prefer) is their latest Omni production model which interestingly enough steps down speed from the Ice Ferret (Fenris) for more pod space. So I'm going to place the Sharks in the Assailant category.

Cloud Cobra according to the RATs fields a bunch of Adders but nothing else is prolific. Given their resource situation and the fact that the Battle Cobra and the Stalking Spider appears in their front line touman I'm inclined to go with Zombie with Assailants them filling out.

Snow Raven despite their poor resource situation has many beneficial factors helping them enhance their touman. Their ever present merchants (probably Diamond Sharks chief competitor) and warship contracting deals with various Clans. Looking over their RATs their most popular Omnis seem to include Fire Moth (Speedster), Kit Fox (Assailant), Mist Lynx (Assailant), Nova (Assailant), and the Mad Dog (Assailant). Their assault RAT is split pretty evenly and includes a Kingfisher (Zombie). I do get the sense that the Clan has the resources and fits squarely into the Assailant OmniMech philosophy.

Goliath Scorpion not only does their Clan RAT from FM Warden Clans have them fielding many second line Mechs in Front Line service but with the Battle Cobra as their most prolific medium Omni and the Kingfisher appearing in their Assault I can only draw one conclusion. The Scorpions may have the poorest RAT for the Warden Clans which places them firmly in the Zombie camp despite some excellent designs by Master Arminas. I would find it a real feat for them to field Speedsters such as you designed my friend. Just don't have the resources. That being said I like your designs and would still like to use some for this project.

Burrock has no RAT that I can find but their situation places them in the Zombie area in my view.

Hell's Horses I almost forgot. Looking down their RAT they have four favorite Omnis - Fire Moth (Speedster), Stormcrow (Assailant), Timber Wolf (Speedster), Warhawk (Speedster). Going beyond that and looking at the rest of their Clan make up I feel that Speedster is proper designation for their touman. It isn’t as close as Jade Falcons either. Speed trumps Pod Space here.

No problem, Takiro.  A while back, I had an idea for second-line/garrison OmniMechs . . . all with standard engines, ala the Battle Cobra and Crossbow of Clan Steel Viper.  The squeeze on pod-space makes them ideal for Clan Goliath Scorpion (which prefers energy and, alas in this case, ballistic weapons with a targeting computer).  I'll post them a bit later . . . I have five designs:  a 30-tonner moving at 8/12/x, a 40-tonner moving at 7/11/x, a 45-ton tonner moving at 6/9/x, a 60-tonner moving at 5/8/x, and an 80-tonner moving at 4/6/x.

Fits your Zombie category, I do believe and provides for low-cost OmniMechs.  I selected those tonnages because those are the ones that give me the best combination of pod-space and armor protection.  Still, the 30-ton 8/12/x design barely manages to fit 5.5 tons of pod-space . . . and there ain't a whole lot you can do with that!

I should start posting the various design contests next week so I look forward to your entries. I was just surprised how poor the Goliath Scorpion and (more so) Blood Spirit RAT were. Stark differences from the other Clans.

That being said I'd love to get your input on future Scorpion and Clan developments as well for this setting. Love to use some of your ideas.  ;)

Another question: How are the Savage Coyote and Blood Asp (Black Mamba) in this when they are configured with weapons that are not allowed in this contest? All of the Savage Coyes feature the ATM launcher andthree of the five Blood Asp's original five configurations feature the Heavy Laser.

There's only one way to go faster than the Masakari and that is by adding MASC which would take three tons/crits away from a design. Then again you' building a speed demon and there have to beacrificesto achieve that goal.

The Masakari is over sinked and by unofficial rule every design has to incorporate a targeting computer.  I added MASc and exceeded the Masakari's pod space.

Aerospace Expansion
   As the initial Trails raged for OmniMech production in Clan space the Snow Ravens and the Cloud Cobras forwarded a motion to the Grand Council. Their joint proposal formally expanded the Quicksilver Program to include the Clan aerospace industry. Touching on the merits of such an expansion both their Khans cited “the barbarians of the InnerSphere” and their near equal performance during the aerospace engagements of Operation Revival. With examples like Tyra Miraborg they accused the ilKhan and his Wolves as being too shortsighted and failing to explicitly include OmniFighters as part of his renewed armament project.
   Of course the Ice Hellion under the direction of Khan Asa Taney, himself an aerospace pilot, played right into their scheme further scolding the Wolves. The Goliath Scorpions merely pointed out the tactical advantages of such an endeavor while Star Adder agreed on the military necessity of maintaining aerospace superiority. Burrock too recognized the importance of a strengthened fighter force. Diamond Shark proudly cited Karen Nagasawa and with eyes on future profits backed this venture. Nova Cat and their aerospace Khan, Severn Leroux, foresaw the potential benefits as well. Lastly Ghost Bear spoke and backed its allies no doubt realizing its asteroid mining would fuel such expansion.
   Despite a majority of Clans (9) coming out in support of the suggestion the Wolves angrily reacted to any dispersions made by these “Home Clans” and harshly denied any plot against further fighter development. The Coyotes immediately backed their long time allies especially because of the Cloud Cobras’ involvement. Steel Viper was much cooler in their opposition merely stating its satisfaction with their current organization and equipment. No doubt they were motivated by the Snow Ravens planned aerospace expansion and wished to block their rival’s ambitions. However, even among these three (3) opposing Clans there was a tacit acknowledgement of the value of such an idea.
   While a clear majority was formed in the Council early on five Clans were caught in the middle so to speak. The Jade Falcons and Smoke Jaguars desperately wanted to retaliate against the ilKhan and vote yes but they immediately recognized the political ploy and were wary of future industrial commitments. Blood Spirit thought aerospace expansion was a good idea but had spent so much on ‘Mech development they initially hesitated. Fire Mandrill, always divided, had some enthusiastic aerospace Kindraa but were drowned out by larger more conservative Kindraa. Finally Hell’s Horses had reservations about backing their rivals plan but admitted it had merit.
   To discourage any future refusal the Ravens and Cobras actively campaigned for further support. Fiscal backing from the Diamond Sharks and the Nova Cats to the Blood Spirits sealed their support. With its allies in many Fire Mandrill Kindraa they were next to fall in line although some remained unconvinced. Assuring the Crusaders that development of a single OmniFighter for every available weight class (17) would limit the extent of this project in comparison to the OmniMech Program (51) got them on board. Only the Hell’s Horses remained loyal to their Clan allies and refused to be swayed. The final vote in the Grand Council would be 25 for and 9 against.
   The ilKhan admitted the idea had merit and declined a Trail of Refusal (of course grievances followed) on the grounds that it would squander resources. In truth with nearly 3 to 1 advantage in any such trail such a battle would have been difficult at best. With the likely arena to be aerospace and the best Clan forces serving as champions such an effort becomes even more daunting. However it must be said that there was never any evidence that the ilKhan would not eventually extend the program to the aerospace industry. Thus this ploy by the Ravens and the Cobras only ensured such a move but did so by building on the ill will garnered by the initial Quicksilver Trails.

Is there an official naming convention for Clan OmniFighters?

One of the things I am trying to determine is which Clan will be the primary producer of the Vandal and Avar. Of course the party line is various but looking at the fluff on both has given me clues. The Avar I would guess is a Snow Raven design as it mentions them in the fluff along with Blood Spirit who they have trade with. Plus them being the Naval Clan and it makes a whole bunch of sense.

The Vandal also made by various Clans was first made in 2941 and is a bit more mysterious. Components mentioned are from Tokasha and Gatekeeper while the Clan pilots are from Hell's Horses and Fire Mandrill. Could it have been the Hell's Horses before their ejection from Tokasha? Or is it Jade Falcon with holdings on both Gatekeeper and Tokasha?

Again being the Primary Manufacturer does not mean other Clans will not be able to produce said designs in my setting. Rather it will establish a central factory to maximize production for the war effort. This larger site will be able to manufacture more equipment then most smaller Clan operations which I would consider secondary cites. Resources and supplies are a big part too as all Clan material is subject to said war production. Of course outside supply entitles that Clan a piece of the pie so to speak either in production or merchant credit.  I will cover this develop in a future Clarion Call chapter that will deal with Operation Restoration and its consequences. Yes there will be opposition led by the Crusaders (Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar).

The Clan Omnifighters are named nomadic tribes with a warrior bent. Mst, if not all, are tirbes from central or eastern Asia. I did the research about ten years ago for a personal project, though the designs are lost to history.

I can only find give weight classes (25-, 55-, 65-, 85- and 95-tons) available for this aerospace competiton

As Challenge 27 rages on I wanted to discuss the final two aerospace contests. During the aerospace portion of the Quicksilver Trails I have seen many awesome concepts. I believe there are two concepts remaining with two remaining Clans. Coyote and Nova Cat. I wanted to run these concepts by you and make sure they meshed.

Coyote
 â€“ Medium fighter designed for close air support with super heavy armor (see the 55 ton Pashtun or the 65 ton Timur by drakensis) was originally Hell’s Horses but Coyote could fit. Both Clans are relatively close allies and could work together plus the Yotes always struck me as a ground focused Clan.

Nova Cat
 â€“ An inexpensive Medium fighter that while slow moving has the armor and armament of a heavy fighter (see the 65 ton Maori by masterarminas) with great range (fuel) and endurance (energy weapons). While originally a Diamond Shark & Goliath Scorpion I think the Cats could fit be a good fit especially with their energy weapon proficiency.

Or is there some additional Unknown Concepts you would like to suggest for these Clans?

Since you already have a preference for previously submitted designs I suggest choosing from among those. If we are to compete against those designs we will be pigeon-holed like we were with the Ice Hellion challenge. I know that I'm at my imagination's end when it comes to the Aerospace contest when it comes to names and fluff (as can be witnessed by my half-assed writings for the Ice Hellion challenge).

I guess I could do that but unlike the Fire Mandrill entries there is really no suitable entries for any of the other three contests. I also figured with a wider array of tonnages to chose from there might be a better choice to make.

Yes, the Upgrades we are doing now were existing designs that in most cases won a place and hence didn't need a new design.
