Linebacker
The Linebacker was the brainchild of Khan Natasha Kerensky and saKhan Phelan Ward for what quite possibly was the heaviest theoretical OmniMech that could keep pace with the Wolves lighter elements (6/9 MP) is perhaps a consequence of their experiences in the InnerSphere. The Linebacker accomplishes this goal by achieving the same speed as the Adder, Kit Fox, and Mist Lynx all possess the identical movement rate. Thanks to its massive 390 XL power plant the OmniMech has very similar pod space to the venerable Crossbow which some critics see as a negative. Presumably with its heavy armor this ‘Mech can act as an anvil absorbing punishment that its lighter Star mates cannot.
Clan Wolf initially deployed sixteen (16) Linebackers (2 with the 328th Assault in Alpha Galaxy, 5 with the 7th Battle, 1 in the 16th Battle, 8 in the 11th Battle all in Gamma Galaxy) on Tukayyid. As it sites in the Linebacker Deployment (WCSB) most of the Linebackers (14 of 16) are in the service of Gamma Galaxy. Where reports indicated that the new Omni was ‘well-liked by the warriors of the Wolf Battle (Gamma) Galaxy.’ This formation’s three Clusters were generally composed of Heavy and Medium units well suited to the Linebacker. Often deployed in pairs with in a standard Clan Star during the Battle of Tukayyid the design appears to have performed well. Of the original sixteen (16) which took the field there were only six (6) causalities (4 WIA, 2 KIA) among its Mechwarriors.
Next, a Star of newly manufactured Linebackers took to the field as part of the 3rd Battle Cluster for the Trial of Restoration. Again, the design performed well suffering little damage while helping the Wolves to victory in the center and southern flanks of the battlefield. These successful debuts in stark contrast to the Ebon Jaguars three ineffective unveilings (Luthien, Tukayyid, and Restoration) as well as the Hellbringer and Crossbow signs of old age really gave the Linebacker the edge when it came to 65-ton OmniMechs. The Quicksilver Program with its three-tiered Monster Doctrine formalized the replacement and augmentation of Clan forces with the Linebacker as the 65-ton Werewolf (Speedster). While some critics openly derided the ilKhan’s endorsement of his own Clan’s concept for a production slot the Linebacker’s performance mollified those partisan remarks.
Of the four OmniMechs that debuted in the Wolf Clan Sourcebook only it and the Pouncer remain following the Quicksilver Trial. Their similar movement profile (6/9 MP) leads me to think that these designs will be used in close cooperation by the Wolves as well as other Clans. And speaking to the remarks addressing the Timber Wolf replacement I believe that these are a little overblown. In my view these Heavy OmniMechs excellent supplements for different forces as the Timber Wolf can work effectively with faster assault elements the Linebacker can with lighter ones. When we soon come to the Timber Wolf Upgrade I will fill you in on some events there but the three Wolf Assault Clusters in canon (328th, 341st, 352nd) will be retaining it as opposed to the Linebacker.
Other Clans were also quick to show interest in the Linebacker including Star Adder who was quick to team it with their new Hellfury. These two fast Heavy OmniMechs along with the Stormcrow compose Heavy Cavalry Stars which have seen action in both Toumans. The Adders and their new Wolf allies currently possess all three designs to field these large shock units. Ice Hellion displayed their own characteristic reckless abandon for the faster Linebacker which came at the cost of numerous Hellbringers which now has been neglected. Like Wolf and Star Adder they use it in conjunction with the Hellfury and Stormcrow but not in concentrated formations. Instead in serves with lighter designs like the Shadow Cat and Adder. Nova Cat was never a fan of the Hellbringer or the Crossbow and since the Ebon Jaguar was made by their archrival they too elected to try the Linebacker. It is used alongside Stormcrows, Shadow Cats, and Pouncers as a fast heavy in support of these mediums.

My dear Master,
I know you dislike this title I gave you but how else should I call you? Mentor? Teacher? If you want my advice (and since I am writing this letter, I will give it to you anyway) both seems even more ridiculous at our ages. But since I have only a few hours left before my arrival on Strana Mechty and I want to be able to send you this document as soon as I arrive, I will get to the point and tell you about one of my discoveries during my trip to Clan Ice Hellion (by the way, they are as their reputation made us believe they would be and their Watch is a joke).
As you might remember, you ordered me to watch for signs of rearmament from the Clans and although I don’t see the whole picture yet, there are some little things going on that show that they are up to something. The question is what exactly?
I found out during my stay on Hector that some old designs are being retrofitted, which with the advantages provided by the OmniPod system is rather easy to do but was never really done by people so traditionally minded as the Clans, which revert tradition and what their forefathers did to a point that we will never understand. This is why the way the Linebacker was retrofitted is worthy of attention.
The man behind the project, if I might call him so, is a bondsman (for a definition, see file Rho-125/30500115) from Clan Goliath Scorpion (another minor Clan like Clan Ice Hellion) taken by Clan Ice Hellion during some of the Clan internal fights known as the Hellion’s Fury. I wasn’t able to get all the details but it seems that this former Warrior proposed to his bondholder to help a Clan Ice Hellion team with his experience to work on the upgrade of a ‘Mech and that if the results were not meeting the expectations of Clan Ice Hellion, he would serve forever without asking for anything. Still struggling to rebuild from the past actions of their Clan, the Khan and saKhan decided to give this proposal a chance.
Focusing on both the preferred tactics of both Clan Ice Hellion and Clan Goliath Scorpion, they all agreed that a fast heavy-weight ‘Mech would be needed (something if you remember my previous analysis of Clan Ice Hellion forces that is not that common among this rather light oriented Clan). This is why the 7th Attack Cluster attacked Wolf Clan Site #2 and launched a Trial of Possession for some prototypes of the Linebacker, the newest and fastest Heavy OmniMech of Clan Wolf, a profile that meet the bills (and for once it seems they managed to make a decent intel job). In spite of once again taking casualties, they managed to get what they had come for and headed towards Hector.
Hard-pressed by the time and unwilling to face the wrath of Clan Wolf without using their newly acquired prize, the team decided to skip the complete rework they had planned and to focus on reworking the Configurations to improve them while setting up the first production runs of their newest ‘Mech. And let me tell you that these new Configurations are where the influence of the bondsman really shows.
Prime - Since the original prime configuration already had issues in sustained firing of PPCs at long range, the Coyotes decided the LRM 5 didn't add significantly to its effectiveness and replaced the weapon with a second Streak SRM launcher which would be more useful for exploiting breached armour in short-range engagements.

A - Like Configuration Prime, Configuration A was optimised for a specific role: the fire-support one. Deciding to use LRM to weaken its opponent armour before unleashing the firepower of the two ER Large Lasers, the design team went for the best firepower/endurance ratio for the free weight they had and selected two LRM-10 with two tons of ammo. Obviously the 14 Double Heat Sinks don’t allow all the weapons to be fired together but careful selection should prevent anything dramatic to happen. Almost as a last thought, an ER Small Laser was also added.

B - Star Commander Saikiko is from the Kanter Bloodhouse, a minor Bloodhouse within Clan Ice Hellion with only seven of the sixteen extant Bloodrights still held by the Clan. She won her Bloodname prior to the Hellion's Fury campaign and temporarily rose to the Command of the 78th Hellion Lancer Beta Trinary and even defeated three mandrill warriors in the process. As the Clan begins to re-arm, she was given a new Linebacker to pilot. After several test rides in the simulators none of the standard configurations fit her aggressive style. Her main weapons are five ER medium lasers mated to a targeting computer. The LRM launcher is for use as she closes with her enemy, while the Streak launcher is used for added kick at closer ranges. This setup served her well as she has fought off several Trials for her rank.

C - The Coyotes found the Linebacker B somewhat baffling: the large number of heatsinks in the chassis was highly heat efficient so the use of a cool-running gauss rifle as an alternative to a PPC seemed unnecessary. As a more effective use of the ballistic mounting they fitted a Ultra AC/20 dismounting one laser to add extra ammunition.

E - For fire support purposes the Coyotes developed an entirely new configuration. The Linebacker E sports three LRM launchers with five tons of ammunition, for a total of two minutes of sustained fire. As something to fall back upon, a pair of extended medium range lasers in the left arm.

H - A new option for short range combat, the Coyotes adopted a SRM heavy H-configuration that is forced to engage practically point-blank but can deliver more than forty SRMs that home in on a target marked by the Narc beacons it carries. The configuration has had some utility as an area denial mode - once opposing forces are aware of it they will rarely wish to stray within 300m of it - although with the Linebacker's speed they may have little choice.

J - In Clan Star Adder the Meytani Bloodhouse is better known for the Elemental warriors that fill out touman. On rare occasions a sibko of Mechwarriors is produced to add variety to the bloodline. Misako is one of those Mechwarriors and shares her blood with the Banacek Bloodhouse. Earning her Bloodname after the Operation Revival trials, she has risen to command of Supernova Gamma of the Ninth Armored Cavalry Squadron. She has chosen to take a different approach with the arming of her new Linebacker by adding a full set of jump jets for greater tactical mobility. For weaponry she has chosen weapons that are better used in short or medium ranged engagements, A pair of Streak SRM4s are mounted in the torsos while medium lasers of the ER and pulse variety are mounted in the arms. A single ER small laser fills out the Omni's armory.
