Looking at masterarminas Project 3000 for the Taurians got me to expound on what is to come with the Marians who I am a bit partial too in the Periphery. Love to hear your thoughts on this foundational piece for the Hegemony.

Project Hercules

The Marian Hegemony had been maturing from Bandit Kingdom to legitimate Periphery nation since the dawn of the thirty-first century. Always seeking to arm itself with higher grade weaponry the Legions coveted BattleMech technology above all. While the Hegemony possessed many mineral-rich worlds it remained an industrial backwater with low educational standards. Manufacturing for several necessary high-tech components simply did not exist forcing them to import many items. Alphard Trading Corporation was the predominate business of the state with only two others (Marian Arms, Inc. and Hadrian Mechanized Industries) being involved in the arms industry.

The 3rd Marik Civil War would bring untold opportunity to the realm sparking Project Hercules. Caesar Sean O’Reilly, himself a Mechwarrior, commenced the nationwide effort in early 3053 which personally contributed to. Generously offering Marian assistance to various warring parties on all sides of that internecine conflict the arms sales skyrocketed which attracted foreign investment. This burgeoning market far removed from the Clan front seemed ripe for future expansion which certain shrewd patrons recognized. Profits from these transactions encouraged much needed growth in that area with new companies being created and further development nearly guaranteed.

Key to the entire Hercules endeavor was the luring of weapon designers, engineers, and scientists from all over the InnerSphere. This effort was led by the Marian Directorate of Security (MDS aka Ordo Vigilis) who especially targeted those displaced during the recent chaos of the Free Worlds League breakdown. The Senate agreeing to open Marian lands to interstellar refugees displaced by the Clans and other InnerSphere conflicts providing many with a new start. Marik refugees were the single greatest influx but significant amounts of Taurians fleeing their Protector’s paranoia as well as former Tamarians looking for a distant relocation were also present.

Citizenship could be earned for those attracted by these friendly outreach efforts and for those not lured by promises of wealth and security there were other methods. Abductions by Marian raiders who engaged in scientific raids, outright theft, and intellectual slavery furthered these goals by all possible means. Finally, the Caesar’s Romanization Edicts were introduced to improve Marian educational standards which were previously almost nonexistent. Mandating English literacy and proper Hegemony social studies there were also minimal science and mathematics lessons for all. Schooling would reveal those talented enough for higher education which is perhaps the most ambitious part of these reforms.

Sean intends to establish his own version of the New Avalon Institute of Science (NAIS) on Alphard he calls the Nova Roma Central Academy (NRCA). Planning is still underway on this crown jewel for this new Marian system of education which will include various regional facilities as well. For now, the Hegemony must rely on outsiders for this all to work but in the future the nation could eventually become self-sufficient. In the meantime, construction on the Hercules MechWorks continues with the Alphard Trading Corporation and Marian Arms partnering on the creation of this project.

Not enough history.  It's been a complaint since the Periphery 1st edition that a culture based on ancient Rome has no sense of history.  They should have leveraged Primitives, and even in your AU they should have done something.

Gotta go, more whining later.

I just changed Heracles (Greek Anglification) to Hercules on the post here to reflect a more proper Romanization of that mythic character.

Could you be a bit more specific in your whining Red Pins? I always liked the Marian Hegemony and its Roman basis is no more strange than the Draconis Combine or even the Rim Worlds (ancient greek basis).

Taking in war refugees and recruiting mercenaries to form your Legions what would they really care how you set up your bandit kingdom? Its evolution to legitimacy in the 3050s is actually pretty neat to me.

I did have a ICE 'Mech concept which could work here. It would make a certain degree of sense if the Marians did pioneer such backward engineering. After blowing off some serious dust on my forum files I found it, link below.

I'm not sure how many Taurians would be attracted to the Hegemony.  The Hegemony practices slavery- which would be repugnant to the Taurians who value freedom over everything else.  Also Sean O'Reilly has become more dictatorial then his predecessors.  Finally The Hegemony has been stepping up attacks against the Lothian League- a nation founded by Taurians after the RW and which has maintained a special relationship with the TC.  It was this attack that led Jeffrey to break off relations with the Hegemony.  I suspect Taurians fleeing Thomas would head to the OWA or MOC rather then the MH.

You could be right there Irose. It seems like Thomas Calderon was on friendly terms there with the Marians so dissidents might not flee there worrying the Caeser would just return any Taurian wanted by Thomas for treason or whatever else he accused them of.

Taurians were attractive to me and I am sure the Marians for their high learning and schooling which would be helpful to their ends here.

Good point though so i think I'll drop that move unless they are kidnapped.

What do you think about ICE Mechs here??

I really like this idea for the Auxiliary Mech as I have dubbed it which plays into both the old Ice Project and Hercules. Plus some more ICE Mechs on the way.  What do you think?

Auxiliary BattleMechs
The Marian Legions were quick to recognize the potential of low-tech (aka as primitive or ICE) BattleMechs as a potential force multiplier for its other forces. Working in conjunction with their more sophisticated cousins and other conventional forces they could give the appearance of much larger formations. They were also effective in support of line troops during engagements serving as valuable force multipliers for the Hegemony. Another benefit was the revelation of talented Mechwarriors from a much deeper pool of candidates. Exceptional low-tech operators could be upgraded to the Marians’ limited fusion powered BattleMechs. Conversely those who failed the Caesar could be demoted to such forces as punishment quite possibly earning a way back to a more prestigious assignment. Easy to produce and rapidly manufactured these ‘Mech Auxiliaries promised to enhance the Hegemony operations in the near future.
Protector Thomas Calderon of the Taurian Concordat hearing of their development and intrigued at the possibility of quickly enlarging his garrison forces against a FedCom invasion quickly arranged a deal with Caesar Sean O’Reilly to obtain these Auxiliary Mechs for his military. Agreeing that Alphard Trading Corporation would manufacture these simple war machines for the Concordat on Perdition each nation furthered their development designing several different ‘Primitives’ based on their modern equivalents. The Taurian Defense Force (TDF) was less enthusiastic about these low-tech units and promptly relegated them to garrison duty. This ‘defensive mindset’ was somewhat troubling to Marian observers who the Taurians routinely refer to as ‘cold hearted bastards’.
More recently Jeffrey Marik has built on the original FWLM concept to arm volunteer Mechwarriors with these machines in his struggle to liberate the Free Worlds League. Thus far these Liberation Battalions have performed well in combat against their opposition fighting with unmatched ferocity. Their success has surprised many InnerSphere analysts who continue to malign these ‘Periphery Mechs’ as trash unworthy of a true Mechwarrior. While it is true that causalities for these lesser volunteer forces run much higher than their more sophisticated colleagues their positive effect on the battlefields of the 3rd Marik Civil War cannot be denied. Kali Yama Weapons Industries Incorporated of Kendall has become the third manufacturing site for these auxiliaries thanks to a licensing agreement with Alphard.

...Mea Culpa.   ;D

The ICE units sound interesting - after all, we know they will eventually do them in canon, even though I can't remember the name.  My point is; this is a culture that has not forgotten the past, to the point of arming the Caesar's bodyguards with swords.  Why didn't they remember Primitive Battlemechs?  Why did they have to wait for the Jihad to see somebody else do something with them?  It just annoys me.  Really, really, annoys me.  They can't be this blind, looking at the way New Hessen managed to leverage two manufacturing facilities for Primitives.

I do have a suggestion, though.  The Rim Worlds Republic made it to Circinus, but it was part of the Erdvynn Province of the RWR.  We know Amaris was smart enough to hide outposts and manufacturing facilities like Kwangjong-ni - why not allow some los-tech prospector find something??

It is true that Amaris had many training camps and secret facilities in the Periphery to arm the 50 Periphery BattleMech Divisions he kept the SLDF busy with. Finding such a cache is possible I think two big finds maybe too many for the Marians. Although there is a nation under a guy who found one big discovery so maybe there is that drive to do so again.

This makes me think about an idea I have had for some times now.
I will try to post some of my thoughts after I finished my work on the Blackjack.
