NBT-Classic
« on: February 17, 2011, 11:56:37 PM »

Howdy, hoping I'm posting in the correct area here.

Perhaps some of you guys know about us, but if not... I am a player in a long running BT metagame server that has used at, varying points: Mech 2/3/4 and Megamek.  The server, http://www.netbattletech.com/nbtclassic3/, is just getting started up on a new Megamek cycle, but artistic talent is lacking.  There are several creative projects that haven't progressed as far as we'd like, namely: an introductory starmap picture, faction logos, and a new NBT-Classic banner.

I happened to stumble upon your website and was impressed by what I've seen.  I am not sure what NBT as a community can offer in return as our most our taleneted contributors normally dabble in code; for example significantly expanding upon the Mech 4 engine for our Hardcore league.  But I was intrigued by your idea and figured it be worthwhile to see what could be done.

On a personal level, I wouldn't mind recieving help creating a decent looking Niops Assocation logo because I have no zero art skills.

Our current is an MS Paint job, and I was impressed by your work for the Kapteyn Universe.  NBT would like an introductory 3075 general starmap with a broad outline of the major factions; like what you see in most sourcebooks.  Our actual starmap is a very good, html integrated program that tracks with our server but the access page could do with something snazzier.

If you'd like to help us out please let me know and I'll speak with an NBT-C admin about seeing how they can try and offer their services to folks here who might want it.

That's what I'm talking about!

I'll see what I can do about your Niops Logo.

I can do something quite easily.  PM or email me with exactly what you are looking for in the map, what is to be displayed etc. and I'll get a mock up together.

I want to caution not to get excited Knightmare.  NBT is an old league full of gonards who move slowly.  I do not want to promise anything that can't be delievered.

I have spoken with an admin and he's interested, if hesistant, about the potential for cooperation here.  He is a Jihad lover whose compiled detailed mech/vehicle and aerospace tables for 3039, 3067 and 3075; the latter forms the build tables for our current league.  Possibly this could help out players who visit this website down the road.  I'm gonna speak with more admins and some of the playerbase.  If nothing else maybe direct some foot traffic to your website for the ficition that already exists.

As for the map, we are looking for a 3075 image based on the Blake Documents map.  Here is a picture of our current map:

It works and it ain't half bad.  But the map is Paint based and I'm betting a more powerrful graphics program can create a shaper image.  Just to be clear, any new submission would require admin approval.  So if the admins are okay with the knock up it can then be finalized.

As for a Logo, if you really wanted to work on something Knightmare, NBT would be THRILLED if we got an updated logo and I would prefer that you work on that rather than Niops.  Same deal as with the map, a sketch might be good before a completed image.

For my part, I am a graduate student who enjoys, and has to, write alot.  I could create supplimental ficition for interested people provided someone else handled grammer.

A reference for those interested:

Niops VII, Assembly Chamber, 3075

A short, thin man, dressed in an antiquated, but well cut, black three piece suit, stood on a raised platform in a semi-circular depression before several ascending, packed rows.  His angular features and narrow lips pleaded with the crowded room as his nasal voice, amplified by the building acoustics, carried a sophisticated air.

“Citizens, Niops is besieged not only from barbarism but by foreign sophists who incite the hoi polloi into a rabid frenzy.  These blind and agitated residents cannot understand the irreparable harm befalling our polis. Therefore, it falls to us to resolve the crisis.

Some argue the Association should listen to the polloi’s demands for political rights and healthcare.  But even if we plunge into socialism, our foes are akrasia, who do not understand reason, and spies following foreign masters.

Myopia necessitates servitude and passion requires nomos.  We should not break from this bedrock tradition of our state.  We should reassert the iron rod of discipline over burgeoning populations which have outgrown control.  Yet to reestablish society our autarky is insufficient.  Taking from those who seek our destruction is a necessary, and morally acceptable, step.

Suffering will result, but history teaches a stork caught in the company of thieves will not be shown mercy.  Like the farmer we must accept suffering in order to defeat corrupted empires built on the bodies of their conquered.

Dark days lay ahead, the serenity of isolation banished.  But do not fear, for I vow Niops will emerge stronger from this crucible as we continue our sacred mission to study the material universe.”

The map is the easy part, but look to Knightmare for awsome logos and images.

Basically, for the map, I use Geographic Information Software and can easily make the map up using the information I have, along with the Blake Documents.

Depending on how much detail you want, we can show internal borders and capitals without to many problems.  I'll look at something over the next week and send something across for you to comment on with just the basic outlines of the states and colours, with a key.

If you have any other requirements, let me know.  Once Knightmare starts releasing the Age of Chaos detail maps, you will really see what we can do.

I understand completely Ceorl. I wasn't trying to come off as overzealous. It's just nice to see this forum showcasing some "proof of concept" - if you catch my drift.

While the AoC booklet isn't finished yet I'll post one of the regional map PDFs so you can get a better idea of what Blacknova is capable of producing with the Mapping Software.

As far as writing supplemental fiction is concerned - take a look around. There are plenty of open AUs in development at the moment (mine included) that would love to have your work added to the existing text. Don't worry about participating for the sake of participating, or over extending yourself. It won't stop anyone here from helping out!

Lastly, shoot me a PM with an e-mail address I can use to send over logo sketches, questions, ideas, etc. I'll see what I can come up with.  :D
