En Passant (Germany Battletech Novel)
« on: February 13, 2014, 07:40:49 AM »

Hey gang, I was trolling through the BattleTech Wiki site and stumbled on this interesting story. Set in 2600 it details a Shadow War between members of the new Star League. Despite several continuity errors like MIIO not being around at this time - founded during 1st Succession War - it is intriguing.

My question to you guys is should we include it with the Shattered Dawn universe? Reason I ask is the Draconis flagship the DCA Ryu is a Farragut class and the Davion field an Aerospace Carrier, FSS Enterprise,  supposedly a Kitty Hawk class. I'd change it to a New Syrtis class as the wiki suggests.

Has anyone read the novel? What do you think?

I thought according to TPTB the German language novels are non canon.  Personally I can't see the DC having a Farragut BB.  I largely like what the writers did with the DC fleet, my only real complaints are the small size and lack of homebuilt ships, not the basic capabilities or structure of the navy.

As to the story - personally I don't like what I see from the synopsis.  According to canon Alexander Davion was deteriorating for about 4 years before he finally died.  There's nothing in canon that implies his death was anything other than natural causes.  And some of the characters- McEvedy, Redburn?  What are these the only minor families in the Inner Sphere?

Yeah I'll grant you some the stuff sounds far fetched especially the assassinations of such high placed figures but history could have been rewritten. I didn't mind the famous family names running around even if some are minor lines. It is a neo feudal universe so you'll see a lot of the same surname over a period of time doing the same thing as their ancestors do in the future, mech warrior for example.

But there are a bunch of continuity issues to deal with. MIIO is huge deal to me. However the sale of a single Farragut to the Combine for use as a flagship doesn't bother me. I mean why not sell a few old BB like a Monsoon or a Dreadnought.  Might be unique cases for a Council Lord flagship but that is fine by me.

Your right about Alexander and the next book in this series goes further off the beaten path.
