Royal Units of the SLDF

SLDF Royal Formations, Pre-Coup

In the discussion on FM:  SLDF, Takiro had posed a question based on the fluff text at the start of the document:  apparently, there was a growing division or discontent between the regular SLDF and the Royals prior to the Amaris Coup.  He asked, what might happen if the SLDF had returned the Royals and reformed the HAF.  I have gone through and think (I hope, at least), that I have all known Royals listed.  It is an extensive list.  And that bugs me . . . the Royals were those units raised just from the Hegemony.  But the sheer number of them is staggering.  Showing here:

26 BattleMech Divisions, 6 Infantry Divisions, 9 Jump Infantry Divisions, and 29 Mechanized Infantry Divisions.  Seventy Divisions.  Plus 2 Artillery Regiments, 1 Battle Regiment, 15 CAAN Marine Regiments, 9 Dragoon Regiments, the French Demi-Brigade, 4 Heavy Assault Regiments, 1 Hover Armor Regiment, 7 Hussar Regiments, 2 Independent Aero Wings, 1 Jump Infantry Regiment, 8 Light Horse Regiments, and 4 Striker Regiments.  That is 55 independent Regiments.

The Royals were a bloody huge force, making up around 1-6th the entire SLDF, or around 16% of its total ground strength.  (If my numbers are right, that is.)

BattleMech Divisions: 119
Mechanized Infantry Divisions: 192
Jump Infantry Divisions: 73
Infantry Divisions: 49
Independent Mech Regiments: 232
Independent Infantry Regiments: 13
Independent Tank Regiments:  7
Independent Artillery Regiments:  5
Independent Aerospace Wings: 15
CAAN Regiments: 15

I can't see the SLDF letting such a large force go and reform the HAF.  However, I could see the malcontents and dispirited personnel partitioned off and elements of the Royals used to form a new HAF, perhaps around the size of the current militaries of the Great Houses.  Probably somewhere around 110-115 Regiments (the official strength of the AFFS and DCMS, respectively, in 2765).

Your thoughts?

On the Naval side, probably between 51 and 62 Capital Ships (51 being AFFS and 62 being LCAF) for the reformed Hegemony Navy.  But of what classes?  We know that the Hegemony favored a mix of battleships and cruisers, with lighter destroyers and corvettes for patrols, but what ships would the SLDF relinquish?

Or might they instead make the Hegemony bring Monsoons and Nagas out of the reserves?  Along with handing over a few Aegis, of course.

Back to the HAF II ground forces:  we would have to squeeze those Royals down from (approximately) 337 'Mech Regiments to around 110 or so (and I am probably low-balling that 337 number).  Call it two-thirds of the Royals being disbanded (well, actually retained by the SLDF, but likely under a different name).  Would the HAF II retain the same designations (Heavy Assault, Battle, Dragoon, Hussar, etc.) as the SLDF, or would they develop their own naming conventions?  If so, what?

Would they retain SLDF divisions or revert to the House standard of independent Regiments?

Cutting by 2/3rds would mean we are looking at 8 BattleMech Divisions (48 'Mech Regiments), 2 Infantry Divisions (6 'Mech Regiments), 3 Jump Infantry Divisions (9 'Mech Regiments), and 9 Mechanized Infantry Divisions (27 'Mech Regiments).  Or about 90 Regiments of BattleMechs.  That would leave 20 or so Independent Regiments (probably around 1 Battle, 5 CAAN, 4 Dragoon, 1 French Demi-Brigade, 1 Heavy Assault, 2 Hussar, 4 Light Horse, and 2 Striker; or somewhere thereabouts).

Giving the HAF approximately 110 'Mech Regiments, plus a LOT of Infantry of all stripes, and at least 66 Regiments of Armor (each Division has an Armor Brigade, remember?).

Anyway, just some rambling thoughts.

The new Hegemony Navy would probably be based around the organisation of the SLDF Second Fleet (which has the mission of defending the Hegemony). That's two line squadrons (total of perhaps 7 battleships, 10 cruisers, 7 frigates), a reconnaissence squadron (4 destroyers and 8 corvettes) and an escort squadron (6 frigates, 6 cruisers). Adding another reconnaissence squadron would bring numbers up to 60 warships, a respectable number, and quite a high tonnage for the numbers. A total of 7 battleships, 16 cruisers, 13 frigates, 8 destroyers and 16 corvettes.

For the Hegemony Army, I'd suggest five Corps - one for each province - with 22 Mech regiments in each, coming to 110 total. In the four outer provinces the four independent regiments would probably form a RCT.

I Corps - Hegemony Core
26th Royal BattleMech Division (The Graham Division)
226th Royal Mechanized Infantry Division (The Wild Ones from Yorii)
279th Royal Mechanized Infantry Division (The Chara Cossacks)

191st Royal Jump Infantry Division
22nd Royal Infantry Division
43rd Royal Light Horse Regiment (The Steeds of Nicholas)
187th Royal Striker Regiment
305th Royal Heavy Assault Regiment
101st Royal Hussar regiment

III Corps - Tyrfing Province
191st Royal BattleMech Division (The Zavijava Division)
47th Royal Mechanized Infantry Division
50th Royal Mechanized Infantry Division
50th Royal Infantry Division (The Flame Keepers of Greece)

My guess is that when the Camerons subsumed the HAF into the SLDF, the HAF's size was pegged to that of the SLDF, so as the SLDF expanded, so did the HAF, yet again showing just how cunning the early Cameron First Lords really were.

As for how many ships were "Royal", I'd go with the same 16%, meaning the Royals had about 400 WarShips in my view.

All this was probably the Cameron's ultimate hdge fund.  If the SLDF collapsed and broke up along regional lines, the new HAF would be so strong that it could face down its opponents with little effort.

The Royals were a bloody huge force, making up around 1-6th the entire SLDF, or around 16% of its total ground strength.  (If my numbers are right, that is.)

This makes perfect sense to me as the Hegemony is 1-6th of the entire Star League, I know that is a pretty simplistic view as I believe every other house is larger (at least in planet numbers) but when the Camerons were doing their political manuevering to 'keep the SLDF balanced' they obviously were able to keep a parity to how many Royal Units got formed and how much had to come from each house. They would look like they were sacrificing on the part of the smaller Hegemony, putting up more than their fair share, when in fact they were jst looking to have a stronger regional force in the long run if needed (obviously that did not work out but that's a different story all together)

This is how I would organize the HAF.  At 114 (approx) BattleMech Regiments and 72 WarShips, it is slightly larger in both ground and navy than the other Great Houses, but not by much.

Drakensis and masterarminas have the right idea for sure! ;)

Love the 5 Corps breakdown! A single BattleMech Division at the heart of each along with 2 Mechanized Infantry Division making up the bulk of the corps, a Jump Infantry Division for mobile response, an Infantry Division for garrison duties, and 4 to 5 Independent Regiments rounding out the formations. Works out to about 22 regiments for each and 110 total which is right in the ball park.

I'm thinking that the SLDF which has 20 Armies could maintain its strength as 11 of them have 4 Corps. Strip 5 of them and you still have 20 Armies. I'll comment on Warships later. Running short on time.

Only thing I can say is I might pick different units. I have yet to review them in detail so I have no alternatives yet. Love to hear your reasons why you chose the ones you did drak and MA? Especially you Arminas, like the idea of a bigger marine force was going to do that already but why all the RCTs??

As for the reason why this was done how about the Arms Amendment of 2752 that doubled the size of House Militaries. Thinking that Kerensky as Regent could raise some eyebrows by bringing back the HAF to match the Houses.

Well, I prefer the Division names of these units, to tell you the truth!  Carver V is the SLDF Marine HQ . . . and it is in the Hegemony Core.  So, I decided two have eight independent regiments in I Corp (1st RCT and 1st Marine Expeditionary Force), as opposed to 4 in the remaining Corps.  Only reason I organized them into RCTs was to give the independent units a 'local HQ' closer than the Corps level.  That and it is probably a lot easier to move four Regiments in a hurry than to get an entire Division mobilized for deployment.  The RCTs are fast-reaction forces, in my opinion, able to respond quickly and keep a lid on things until the ponderous Divisions arrive.  Your own mileage may, of course, vary.

Of course, the four Marine Regiments in I Corp boost total 'Mech strength to 114 Regiments (well, not exactly, since each CAAN Marine Regiment is a combined arms formation of armor (i.e. Cavalry), aerospace, 'Mechs, wet naval, and infantry, but close) and my naval configuration is 10 more WarShips than the Lyrans, but close enough for government work.  Not overpowering, yet superior to any of the Great Houses.

EDIT:  Actually, would 1st Army (based in the Hegemony) actually need 3 full Corps anymore?  Since the HAF will be there anyway?

No, u wouldn't "need" 1st Army to garrison the Hegemony but its presence is symbolically important. The rest of the Houses have to accept a SLDF garrison why not the Hegemony?

So u have new RCTs made out of all the Independent Regiments? Not sure i like that but it is an idea. Like the MEF idea was just going to form a Marine Division myself but u got a Naval or Fleet Combat Team going on. Not bad. Maybe Stephen Cameron could head it up.

Now as for the Royal Navy how about 5 Squadrons instead of 6? Be nice to have one per Corps. What would the maximum number of warships be for that configuration?

Any other fluff to why Kerensky would do all this?

Other than placing divisions with names linked to a particular world in the Corps for that province, there was no particular pattern to which numbers Divisions went where, other than the 1 BM, 1 JI, 1 I and 2 MI ratio. I did concentrate CAAN regiments in I Corps as a strategic reserve, and set up possible RCTs for the other Corps, although they do tend to be a little heavier on average than most canon RCTs, so as to include the Royal Dragoon and Royal Heavy Assault regiments.

You had a couple of French units in the original SLDF

3rd French Infantry Regiment
2nd French Infantry Regiment
1st French Cavalry Regiment
2nd French Cavalry Regiment
1st French Regiment
13th Royal French Demi Brigade
