The abjuration of the Ice Hellions was the result of several issues.
Firstly, the growing frustration of Khan Stephen Tyler and many of the warrior caste with their place as ‘dezgra hired guns.’
Secondly the dispute over ownership of Hesperus II. The world was taken by Ice Hellion troops, but this had been done as part of the negotiations to bring the Skye region over to the Star League. The world was to have been handed over to the Federation of Skye once secured, but this never happened.
Thirdly the five year ban on further offensive operations imposed by ilKhan Kerensky, which many warriors felt was a direct slight against them.
And fourthly the contempt many Ice Hellion warriors had for a grand council that included freeborn representatives.
The matter came to a head in early January of 3055, when the forces of Skye won a trial of grievance against them. Khan Tyler refused to acknowledge their victory and withdrew his Clan from the grand council.
Horrified, saKhan Danielle Lienet challenged her Khan and killed him in personal combat. She then turned herself over to the guards of Unity Keshik. Unfortunately the damage had been done. A majority of the Grand Council voted for abjuration. The Hell’s Horses bid for the right to remove the Hellions from Hesperus II, winning handily. A small flotilla of civilian jumpships managed to escape, but Alpha and Beta galaxies on Hesperus were soundly defeated by the Horses onslaught. None were spared.
Meanwhile the Free Rasalhague Republic was debating what to do with the Hellions within their borders. Delta Galaxy and a large number of the civilian castes were living in enclaves on a handful of Rasalhague worlds.
The Rasalhague solution was to offer the Hellions two options. Either become citizens of the Republic, renouncing their identity as Ice Hellions, or vacate the FRR with no attempts made to stop them.
A small percentage, mostly civilians, took the offer to be Rasalhague citizens, but most packed themselves into their ships and disappeared into the periphery.
In the Homeworlds, the news came as a complete shock. The Ice Hellion garrisons were caught off guard and had to perform fighting withdrawals. Only the Burrocks and Cloud Cobras neglected to participate in the attacks, even going so far as to assist in some of their withdrawals,
which netted them a handful of enclaves.
Diamond Shark and Snow Raven naval forces attempted to pursue the retreating Hellions, but the Hellion fleet scattered. Only a handful were successfully tracked and eliminated. The fate of the rest remains unknown, but they are likely languishing in the deep periphery.
*Note: This occurred in January/February of 3055 as detailed in ‘Politics and War.’ But fear not Hellion fans, their role in things is from done.
