An Origins story (Alternate Timeline with Thanks)
« on: January 18, 2016, 08:18:56 PM »

This is taken from my Alternate timeline with Thanks.  It is intended to highlight the journey of one of the characters in the timeline AFFS Rabid Fox squad leader Leftenant Christopher Grant.  Some of this story will already be in the timeline however I've decided to expand on his life and career to really flush out the character and those around him.

“They call us officers, troopers, fighters, warriors, assassins but at the end of the day we’re killers and murderers every single one of us.”

Taken from the Personal Notes of Leftenant Christopher Grant, Rabid Fox

MI6 Training Camp
Delaven, New Avalon Combat Region
Crucis March, Federated Suns
15th July 3090

Twenty-eight men and women lined up in their duty uniforms as the officer in charge Captain Gareth Harper walked the line of troops “name and rank” he called out as he spoke to each person in turn.

â€œChristopher Grant, Leftenant” he announced as the Captain stood in front of him.

â€œMr Grant, you’re wrong there” Captain Harper said looking at Grant “regardless of where you came from and what rank you held before today you are a Trooper in the Rabid Fox understood?”  These men and women had been selected from across the AFFS armed forces and proven they were capable of being in the MI6.

   â€œSir, yes, sir” Christopher replied

â€œWell done, Trooper Grant” Captain Harper said moving down the line.  “Today all of you will begin to learn skills that will take you beyond what you have previously been.  You will master each of these skills over the next three years and you will become serving members of the Rabid Fox completing operations across the Federated Suns.”  He said “first things first ladies and gentlemen to the deployment bay” he ordered.  They filed into the bay one by one to see four lines of seven Infiltrator III Heavy Battle Armour suits “these are yours” he said glancing at the troopers who saw the smiles growing on their faces at the sight in front of them.  “You will not use these suits on every mission you are deployed on but today you will begin learn how to operate them, how to repair them and how to beat them, and other suits in battle.”

Christopher Grant stepped up to his Infiltrator III and looked the suit in the faceplate it was like a large variant of the Infiltrator II with a bulked up jump pack to carry it the same distance as the lighter suit.  Christopher smiled looking at the suit “I don’t think it will take you out for a drink” a female voice said off to his side she was beautiful she had an athletic but not muscular build with dark red hair he guessed she was around his age of twenty-nine years.

   â€œNo mam” Christopher said respectfully

â€œI’m no mam remember what the Captain said we’re all just Troopers” she replied “McKenna Wilde formerly of the Fourth Crucis Lancers RCT” she said reaching out with her hand.

â€œChristopher Grant formerly of the First Federated Suns Armoured Cavalry” he said shaking her hand.

â€œIsn’t someone a show off?”  She asked smiling politely “the Armoured Cavalry are an elite command you could have done very well in the regular armour.”

â€œBut they aren’t the Rabid Fox” Christopher replied “they don’t get to play with the newest toys.”  He said going back to the Infiltrator III.

â€œA twenty year old piece of kit isn’t exactly new” McKenna said looking over her own suit the Infiltrator III had been in service since the early 3070s.

â€œStill better than the Cavalier” he said looking around his suit “although I’d have settled for a Mk II” he admitted.

â€œWhat classes of Mech are you cleared on?” She asked similarly looking over her own suit.

â€œMedium, Heavy and Assault” he said the only type of Mech he hadn’t piloted in his short career was a light design and he was happy to avoid the smallest BattleMech class.  “Your classifications?”  He asked since she was asking about him he would ask about her.

â€œI’ve played with all the toys at least once but I prefer a good solid medium.”

â€œSame here” Christopher admitted it was cliché but both of them were from the Federated Suns and both preferred the medium class just like on average it was across the nation.  Towards both of them techs approached and helped fit the Battle Armour for Christopher, McKenna and the other trainee troopers.  Later each of them were on the training fields getting to know their new suits and their new squad mates because each of them had begun training at the same time it was likely that they would serve with at least one other member of the training group so each observed their future squad mates intent on finding out the other’s strengths and weaknesses.  Many of the other troopers quickly learned that Christopher Grant read situations and people very quickly and made snap decisions decisively and more often than not correctly they also learned that he was interested in finding out every aspect of a mission before hand and did not like surprises thrown at him from his superiors during operations.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

“Our first mission really set the tone for our unit and for my relationship with McKenna.  We were all in the wrong place at the wrong time we knew it but were not willing to let go what we had.”

Wheeler building rooftop
Donner City, Benet III
Draconis March, Federated Suns
18th October 3093

The four Infiltrator III suits were stationed on top of a prominent building in Donner City of Benet III waiting for the order Trooper Christopher Grant waited silently beside him were Troopers McKenna Wild and Alex Hartung and they were commanded by Squad Leader Michelle Booth. Each of them had waited three hours so far and still there was no word of their objective so they waited in silence.  Then their radio came to life “Spooky to Sierra Squad, targets are confirmed in position.  High rise to east of your position, fourteenth floor, corner room on the left” the intelligence officer briefed the squad.

â€œWe have the target ready to fire” Michelle Booth replied

â€œFire when ready” the intelligence officer ordered

â€œOkay squad on my count…”  She said switching to the squad channel.

â€œSir, it’s a civilian structure, I see thermal images on the floors above and below target our weapons will over penetrate the targeted area.”  Christopher reported there would likely be several civilian deaths resulting in their attack.

â€œWe have our orders.  Ready to fire” she said

â€œSir, if we changed the angle of our attack we could limit the collateral damage…”  Christopher suggested thinking quickly about where they could move to but the intelligence officer broke in.

â€œSpooky to Sierra do you have a problem?”

â€œAffirmative one of our weapons needed a cold restart.  Five seconds until full reset” she replied it was a ‘white lie’ it wouldn’t hurt anyone.  She switched back over to the squad frequency “ten seconds then we empty on target people no screw ups” Michelle ordered referring to Christopher specifically she’d covered for him saying that the weapon had malfunctioned she couldn’t cover for him if he didn’t fire now.  His mind raced “FIVE” it was a civilian building their weapons would slice through it like a hot knife in butter.  “FOUR” there were civilians in the rooms beside their targets they wouldn’t know the weapons fire was coming and they wouldn’t stand a chance. “THREE” their intelligence asset didn’t care about the collateral damage. “TWO” if he didn’t fire his career in the Rabid Fox and probably in MI6 was over.

â€œONE” there wasn’t another option… he thought to himself moments later he and the other three troopers opened fire with their MagShots.  Their weapons tore through the targeted zone tearing through the windows, walls and doors of the civilian building cutting down their targets elsewhere in the nearby areas of the building heat signatures from others inside slowly winked out as more people were taken out.

â€œSierra targets eliminated escape and evade return to base” Spooky ordered the squad without a word the four troopers turned and leapt from the building using their jump jets leaping to another building they moved quickly lightening the jets again leaping to another building and away from their target.  Throughout the city below emergency service vehicles streamed towards the building they had targeted attempting to save some of those who had been caught up in the attack.

FSDS Jacob Hobbs, Leopard-class DropShip
DropPort, Benet III
Draconis March, Federated Suns
18th October 3093

Taking several steps inside the DropShip Christopher Grant approached and slammed into a green container inside the bay with his Battle Armour claw leaving a visible dent in its side.  Around the bay techs stepped back giving the trooper dressed in Infiltrator III Battle Armour plenty of room as several others moved into the bay.  No-one approached the painted black suit for several moments as the trooper activated his internal release switch the rear hatches of the suit released along the arms and legs of the suit before the back also opened allowing the trooper to step out of the suit.  Immediately Christopher crossed the bay leaving his suit heading deeper into the DropShip behind him the other troopers of his squad released as well and quickly followed finding Christopher in the ship’s compact rest area opening a bottle of scotch.

â€œA little early to be starting on that” McKenna Wilde said looking at Christopher pour a single glass but not drink any of it instead he stood staring at the glass.  Behind McKenna the other two members of Christopher’s squad hovered but she waved them by instead entering the rest area closing the door behind her.  McKenna crossed the room sitting on the couch opposite Christopher who remained routed to the spot beside his glass.  “What are you thinking?”  She asked but he didn’t answer her “answer me Chris.”

â€œI’m thinking that today was not why I signed up” he admitted glancing at her before looking back at the glass his hand rose circling the top of the glass.

â€œLeave the glass there and come over here” she said her eyes looking over him.

â€œYou think the Captain would want us on the same couch after the last time?”  He asked her despite the two of them being physically and emotionally involved during their training the two had been assigned to the same Rabid Fox squad.

â€œToday’s an exception to the rule, we all have bad days.”  She said as he crossed the room without the glass crashing into the couch.

â€œThey were Federated Suns citizens” he said angrily “and we executed them.”  He said going through the events in his mind their contact had designated the targets, a specific room, on a certain floor in a civilian housing block and Christopher’s squad had engaged without hesitation peppering the target with their MagShot Gauss Rifles.  There was no chance anyone inside had survived the onslaught according to their source six citizens of Benet III all subversive to the Sandoval families rule of the March speaking and acting against the good of the Federated Suns.  “The order came through and we fired, one shot, two, three until the clip was empty.  Then we sneaked away without even facing them.”  He said angrily

â€œWe were trained to fight all enemies foreign and domestic we all knew that we’d have to face that one day.”  She said trying to rationalize it for herself.

â€œOn our first live fire op” he said trying to make sense of it.  As a team they had already on four missions but each of them had been simple intelligence gathering with not a single shot fired.  This time they had been told from the start that this would be a live-fire operation and they’d need their suits but they had expected to be hunting down a rogue DCMS unit or a pirate command.  Instead they had been commanded to set up in the centre of Benet III’s capital and wait for orders.  When the command had finally come down each of them had fired six rounds into the building before evading local authorities returning to their DropShip.  Even as they were sitting on this couch Christopher could feel the ship’s engines were powering up preparing to take them off the planet.  “I just didn’t think it would feel like this.”  He admitted “I thought we’d be up against hardened enemy targets, headhunting command units or finding out our enemies best hidden darkest secrets.  Instead we’re taking out our own citizens what the hell?”  He demanded sinking down into the chair.

â€œAll enemies foreign and domestic we just got the raw deal this time next time we’ll get a proper meaty target that’s the way of the Rabid Fox on covert mission and one overt one.  We won’t be stuck in the grey area for too long” she promised him putting her arm around his neck showing solidarity with him as the ship rumbled and began moving along the runway and into the atmosphere soon they would leave Benet III and not look back.  MI6 believed that having their units rotated through various tasks gave better overall coverage not having to rely on specific units to do certain tasks and others being unable.

â€œI just wish that this hadn’t been how we started out” he said looking at her their eyes meeting but quickly searching the others face and lips without another word the two were locked in a passionate, desperate, embrace sinking their feelings into each kiss.  Every moment they knew that they could get caught by their commander but neither of them broke off the kiss until they could feel the switch from natural to artificial gravity.  On the bar area the liquid in Christopher’s drink momentarily leapt from the glass hovering in mid air before falling back inside.  “On wards and upwards” he said rising from the chair McKenna’s hand snagging his as he moved towards the bar they broke apart after a moment with McKenna remaining seated.

â€œOn wards and upwards, we did this job now we do the next” she said confidently reciting the Rabid Fox philosophy of never being stuck up on a job, never stopping, just searching for their next target.

â€œWe’re the best and we know it” Christopher said quoting another senior officer as he poured the liquid from his glass it was not their job to question only to pull the trigger they had to accept and make peace with that or find another job.  "Soldiers, Killers, murderers choose your title it's all the same" Christopher thought coldly.

Nice story!

I'm glad you enjoyed it

Christopher Grant’s Apartment
Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
24th January 3098

There were many benefits from being in the Rabid Fox one of them was being paid enough to afford an apartment in Avalon City.  Entering his apartment Christopher thought something was wrong but didn’t know what moving into the main room he saw what was wrong, or right depending on how you looked at it, McKenna Wilde was sat down waiting for him slowly drinking what looked like a whiskey with ice.

â€œHi” he said greeting her he was surprised to see her but not unhappy “I would ask how you got in but I guess I’d be wasting my time” he half joked as she rose from the seat.

â€œThey trained us well” she said “which is why I’m here.  I’m not ready to give up on this life yet” she said running her hand along the side of his face “I can’t keep going through life lying to everyone I love and care about for this” she said stepping away from him “whatever the hell this is” she said raising her hands in frustration.  Turning back towards him she saw he was about to speak “no don’t say a word, if you do I might not do this, it will be a good change for us” she said leaning in kissing him on the lips “I’m done” she said quietly “I’ve requested a transfer to a post in the Star League Protectorate it’ll be a change of pace a new challenge.”  She said

   â€œI…” Christopher began

â€œI know” she said breaking in “but not this time.  I’ll see you again.”  She promised stepping away from him grabbing her jacket off the back of the chair she left the flat quickly closing the door behind her.  Christopher sat down on the chair her jacket had been laid over he could smell her scent lingering in the air it was something he’d miss the most and have to get used to not being in the air.

Training Ground, “DMI Station”
Hadrian’s Command, Crucis March
Federated Suns
19th June 3100

Various MI6 Intelligence and Rabid Fox teams were assembled in the briefing room on board DMI Station in the Hadrian’s Command system.  DMI Station was actually a large facility that had been built inside a massive asteroid in the system the insides had been nearly completely hollowed out and reinforced with WarShip grade reinforcements.  The station was one of the most restricted in the entire system with only the Federated Suns Intelligence Agencies and senior commanders allowed on board.  Today there was a large briefing and Leftenant Christopher Grant was one of the first to take his position in the hall.  As he sat there waiting Christopher was happy to see the two other active members of his squad were among the first to arrive Everett Jenson wouldn’t be joining them on this tour following a broken leg during training.  As other team members entered the room immediately a face in the crowd caught Christopher’s attention she’d dyed her hair a chocolate brown colour which suited her quite well but it was definitely her slowly she sunk into one of the front chairs.  Once the last members of the teams were sat down a senior officer stepped in “I’m Colonel Clarke Thomas” he said addressing the group “today we are briefing on a situation on out Periphery border.  Over the last few months the Pirate Cluster has become more active and Nathaniel Gordon, the man running the place, has turned their attention on the Federated Suns.”  He said as an image of the pirate lord appeared “we’re deploying en mass against the pirates in the Cluster we have a double objective against Nathaniel Gordon and against the pirate’s Brigand factory.  We’re going to take them both down in one swoop” he said there was a series of murmurs through the crowd “our intelligence assets on the ground are confirming that Gordon is on the ground.  If he is not in the cluster the strike is still a go we will take out the Brigand factory.”  He said making sure they all understood that this was not just a strike against a single man instead they were also after a physical target and that there were friendly assets on the ground.  “More detailed briefings will take place over the next few days we leave at the end of the week.  Finally before you all escape this boring room there are a couple of squad changes Shaun Peterson you’re joining Echo Team.  McKenna Wilde you’re joining Delta Team.”  He said Christopher leaned back in his chair ‘and there it was’ he thought quietly McKenna Wilde had just walked back into his life.

Soon after Christopher and his team were at one of the firing ranges zeroing their personal weapons when McKenna entered Christopher immediately spotted her and stepped closer “welcome back trooper” he greeted with a smile.

â€œI didn’t think you’d stay a trooper for too long Leftenant” she said throwing him an easy salute his recent ‘promotion’ had taken him back to the rank that he’d held previously in the regular army in the Rabid Fox officers that rose above the rank of Major rarely were involved in operations instead were relegated to off field positions such as the planning and coordination meaning promotions were rare among young capable officers.

â€œWell what can I say?”  He said “I hear you had some successes in your liaison work with the Star League Defence Force.”  He said not revealing much.

â€œIt was mostly intelligence gathering helping the SLDF route out criminal and paramilitary elements active on the worlds that used to belong in the Federated Suns as well as helping them in systems formerly held in the Draconis Combine and Capellan Confederation.”

â€œSo I heard particularly the O’Rourke family…” Christopher began suddenly McKenna’s facial expression completely changed from a bland friendly expression to a surprised and slightly angry one.  For someone who didn’t know McKenna they wouldn’t have seen the change but Christopher had known her for a long time and immediately spotted the change McKenna noticed him spot the change as well.

â€œHow did you hear about that?”  She asked coldly

â€œI know people too” he answered cryptically “sounded like good work well done.”  He said half turning “gentlemen” he called out to the other troopers who had maintained a polite distance until now “this is McKenna Wilde.  She used to be part of my squad before doing some liaison work in the Star League Protectorate” he said explaining what he knew of her but not revealing too much of the work.  “McKenna this is George Hewlett and Sylvester Keeler our other team members” he said introducing the other two members of the team.  “Whatever our orders are we stick together as a team and watch each other’s backs” he said briefing them as a team “if all goes to hell I want you to learn our alternate points like the back of your hand.”

â€œThey are just pirates” George Hewlett said dismissively

â€œPirates with BattleMechs” Sylvester Keeler reminded him

â€œRegardless this team will succeed where everyone else fails I’ve got confidence in all of you I know you can all do the job and that we can do this so let’s get to work.  No-one leaves the range until they put an entire clip in the centre zone” he said both George and Sylvester groaned but McKenna flashed a wicked smile of appreciation as she moved passed them and picked up a rifle aiming at one of the targets without another word she fired three rapid fire shots into the centre circle.  “Try to keep up boys” Christopher said moving over towards his own rifle the other two turned and joined Christopher and McKenna and as a team they began to fire into their targets.

For those who have read my timeline most of this is taken from there but I added a little introduction to the part.

“Mistakes were made in the Pirate’s Cluster, by us, by them, by me.”

Combat Drop
Pirate’s Haven, Pirate Cluster
Periphery
14th December 3101

The Buccaneer-class DropShip flew quickly through the atmosphere dropping supply packages as it came into land using a civilian ship to approach the surface was that they could slip in undetected.  There lack of BattleMech support on this mission was a concern for many of the troopers but the Mechs would not be able to get close enough to Gordon or to the factory to confirm their elimination without massive collateral damage.  Behind them the twenty-four Infiltrator III Heavy Battle Armoured troopers of the Rabid Fox inside the DropShip Christopher Grant stepped his suit to the door before launching into the air for several moments his suit fell like a stone before the suit’s para-foil deployed rapidly slowing the descent.

Drifting slowly down through the night’s sky Christopher could already see they were in trouble.  Not a single Rabid Fox had set foot on the planet’s surface yet he could see BattleMechs leaving the walled fortress claimed by Nathaniel Gordon someone had tipped them off.  Already at the far off distance he could see long range missile fire streaking into the air from the defenders.  “Hell” Christopher exclaimed seeing the pirates “Delta switch to Alternate Four, Alternate Four” he ordered seeing the first troopers land.

â€œConfirmed” McKenna Wilde replied first “what a mess”

â€œWe’re screwed boss” George Hewlett complained moments later

â€œAgreed, sir, the rest are going to primary points” Sylvester Keeler said as the first troopers began to come in to landings firing their magshot gauss rifles at the enemy “this was supposed to be a surprise strike, they were not supposed to know we were coming.”

â€œIn short we’re screwed” George commented again

â€œQuiet” Christopher snapped “someone tipped off the pirates we all said we needed BattleMech support for this operation and this just goes to prove that the boots on the ground were right.”  He said “make sure you’re heading for Alternate Four” he reminded his troopers each of them clicked once on the comm. system answering his question.

The troopers slowly came in for a landing far from their original landing point “the other teams know the drill they will fall back to alternates” McKenna pointed out.

â€œAgainst that firepower good luck to them” George said they could all hear the anger in his voice that each of them shared.

â€œWe need to move out” Christopher said glancing at his sensors setting a waypoint towards the other squads they needed to see how the others were doing.  A Stinger BattleMechs suddenly appeared crossing the sand “squad!” He called out all four troopers turned their gauss rifles at the Mech firing a salvo into the twenty ton Mech followed by a second salvo the several of the shots hit the Stinger’s head section stripping it of armour but the warrior still had time to get off a salvo of rockets which exploded all around them in the sand.  “Hit him again before he does lasting damage kill him!” Christopher ordered stepping his suit forward firing shot after shot into the incoming Stinger striking it on several locations staggering the Mech back laser and machine gun fire peppered the area but the warrior was fighting a losing battle and almost as quickly as the fight had started it was over and the pirate was dead.

â€œOne less to worry about” McKenna commented

â€œPlenty more left let’s move forward we need to get to the alternate and see if anyone else made it.”  Christopher said leading the squad forwards past the broken remains of the Stinger.  They moved forward restricting their travel to only when it was dark and they avoided using their jump packs meaning that a trip that should have taken a few hours took nearly a full twelve hours.  By the time they had arrived near where the other troopers had landed they found that the rest of the Rabid Fox squads had been overwhelmed, killed or captured, they'd taken down at least a company's worth of pirate Mechs and vehicles but already the pirate kings were claiming victory over the Federated Suns.

Road of Shame
Pirate’s Haven, Pirate Cluster
Periphery
17th December 3100

â€œThey tried to invade our world!” King Nathaniel Gordon said angrily it had hardly been an invasion twenty-four Battle Armour equipped troopers of the Federated Suns Rabid Fox Command.  Somehow the Federated Suns had located their haven in the cluster but the pirates had been ready.  Prepared for any type invasion on their soil as soon as the Rabid Foxes were discovered every pirate under Nathaniel Gordon’s command had moved.  Hopelessly outgunned at least twenty of the troopers had been killed or disabled and now the survivors were at the mercy of the pirates of the Cluster “we were ready for them!”  Gordon screamed as the gates opened the nine surviving men and women were herded by the pirates down a narrow path each had their hands bound and they were tied to the trooper in front of them all around the path were the baying crowd of the Pirate’s cluster.  This world had originally been designed as a hidden base for the pirates but over the years it had grown to form a small community who lived and died under pirate rule.  Now the people had their entertainment as the surviving Rabid Fox troopers were pushed down the street they were pelted by thrown food, thrown human waste and stones.  Several of the troopers were knocked to the ground hauling their companions down into the muck with them as they went but each time they stubbornly got back up continuing their march.  Nathaniel’s advisers had said he should keep a couple alive to interrogate but this was not the moment for such matters instead the troopers were led to a row of hanging ropes.  As they approached the troopers realized what was happening to them this was not a walk of humiliation but their execution several attempted to break their bonds and escape but each time they did a pirate stepped in and smashed them with the butt of their rifle knocking the trooper to the ground.  “Our Succession Lords need to understand that if they come to our world they pay the price.”  Gordon said as the nooses were wrapped around the necks of the captives.  “You should have never come to my world” Gordon said raising his arm once the last rope had been tied.  As one the nine captives were raised by their necks on the ropes and began to choke to death.

A kilometre away the four remaining Rabid Fox troopers watched through their Magshot Gauss Rifle scopes.  The remaining squad leader watched as his comrades were lifted to their deaths “triple salvo and then we break to Alternate Post Zulu” he ordered there were three winks of status lights as the other troopers acknowledged his command.  “Fire” he finally said immediately the troopers fired three rapid salvos from their weapons each salvo was aimed intentionally the first was aimed at the first four troopers, the second at the third line of four while the fourth hit the last trooper, two of Nathaniel Gordon’s advisers and Gordon himself.  The Rabid Fox team had no chance of releasing their captives but nor would they leave them to die by hanging instead a quick death as the gauss shots tore through them.  The last salvo targeted on Gordon killed both of his advisers instantly but at the last moment the King moved slightly knocking the shot off instead of impacting with the man’s head the shot tore through his left elbow severing the arm completely as the kinetic force tore through his body.

Not waiting to see the results of their fire the remaining squad broke position immediately disappearing into the wastes of this planet.  They still had a mission to complete and they would do everything in their power to ensure it was completed by the time allotted to them.  In the pirate camp chaos ensued as the pirates scrambled to find the attackers, to check on their captives and to tend to their now wounded King.

Alternate Post Zulu
Pirate’s Haven, Pirate’s Cluster
Periphery
19th December 3100

After two days of hard travel the four remaining Rabid Fox troopers finally arrived at Alternate Point Zulu.  Approaching pair of connected shipping containers the squad leader Leftenant Christopher Grant pushed a small veil into the control panel the door slid open allowing the four Infiltrator III suits to enter.  As the entered lighting inside automatically activated Christopher Grant moved forward half way along the container docking his suit with one of the power points the other three suits docked with the remaining power points as they did the container doors closed behind them sealing the container fans inside quickly scrubbed the atmosphere clearing the way for the four troopers to breath unassisted.

â€œWell this is a FUBAR situation” Trooper McKenna Wilde said stepping out of her suit “El-Tee what the hell are we supposed to do now?”  She asked crossing the container stretching out on one of the bunks.

â€œWe can still complete the mission.”  Christopher said moving across to the bank of computer screens entering a code.

â€œWe can still complete the mission?  Who the hell are you trying to kid?”  Trooper George Hewlett said stepping over to his bunk “we came here with twenty-four men and women two elite teams of Rabid Fox troopers and we just killed our last allies on this rock.”  He said angrily

â€œOur mission was to flatten that Brigand factory” Christopher Grant said “we can still do that” he said looking at the other three “we survived the pirate ambush because we are the best the fact we were able to engage Gordon and evade without return and we are now in a facility that the pirates won’t be able to find unless they walk into it.”  He said the containers were lined with stealth materials and had a low power outage making them nearly completely undetectable.  There was enough food to last a squad for months and plenty of ammunition for their suits and for small arms.

â€œWe’re completely outnumbered and the CO is dead we’re screwed.”  George replied

â€œNot quite” Christopher said triumphantly as the computers booted up “gather around” he said calling the other three closer “anyone that made it to one of these facilities is given access to Plan Epsilon.”

   â€œPlan Epsilon?”  McKenna asked

â€œYes” Christopher said “the plan is to strike at the factory then we break off and rendezvous at Post Omega.”  He said highlighting a position on the map “from there we can hold out until our pick up arrives.”

â€œIf it arrives” George said “getting into the Cluster has never been easy.”  He said shrugging.

â€œHave some confidence they will come” Christopher said “we’ve done the impossible here people surviving that ambush and making it here.  We’ve got a little bit further to go then we’re heading home” he said confidently “now get some sleep.”  He finally ordered dismissing his three squadmates this was not home but it was somewhere safe and safe is what they needed right now.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Scout Mission
Pirate’s Haven, Pirate’s Cluster
Periphery
14th January 3101

The Pirate’s Haven that the Rabid Fox were now stranded on was a hell hole the atmosphere was toxic and subject to frequent radiation storms no human who wished to live a long life.  The Rabid Fox had scouted several targets without any luck so far.  “Sierra One to India team we’re in position.”  Christopher Grant said peering down his scope looking at the facility.  Because the Pirate’s Haven had a toxic atmosphere anyone not wearing armour had to wear full facial respirators allowing two members of the team to move through the settlement unmolested but where they were at the moment was heavily guarded and restricted to people the pirates knew by sight only the skill of McKenna Wilde and Sylvester Keeler had gotten them to where they were.

â€œIndia One we have good eyes observing now” McKenna replied she was sitting at the corner of the external stairwell of the building keeping watch while Syvester Keeler got the information they needed.

â€œSierra Two, India One, you have two incoming.”

â€œUnderstood, we’re almost done, is our exfill path clear?”  She asked keeping an eye out for guards meant she couldn’t keep an eye on everything.

â€œAffirmative you are clear” George Hewlett said from his observation point he could see their escape vehicle.

â€œGuards thirty paces and closing” Christopher said “twenty-five” he said watching them move closer.

â€œWe’re done Chris the data’s confirmed it’s here” McKenna reported

â€œShift your ass then” he replied

â€œKeep your eyes off my ass and and my surroundings please.”  She said both of them were already moving towards their exit vehicle but the guards were closer “shit we’re blown!”  McKenna called out ducking down turning firing her sub-machine gun.  “Sylvester shift it I’ll cover.”  She called out Sylvester was already moving down the steps as McKenna emptied the clip.

â€œBoth of you shift!”  Christopher barked “we’ll cover George let it rip!”  He ordered both of them fired their Magshots taking down two of the enemies.  Suddenly alarms throughout the facility sounded as the pirates were made aware of what was happening.  Both Sylvester and McKenna half jumped off the stairs running to their vehicle.

â€œWe’ve got eyes on you” George said as the vehicle began to move “Sierra One we’ve got a blue hover utility looks like Filtvelt manufacture.”

â€œGot you” Christopher replied as McKenna Wilde punched the accelerator moving the vehicle towards the bases gates moments later behind them were three other hover trucks firing at the Rabid Fox vehicle.  “Still got you” Christopher said snapping off a shot striking the front of one of the pirate vehicles “damnit missed the engine block” he cursed firing again this time hitting the mark knocking out the vehicle’s power plant.

   â€œNice shooting boss”

â€œThanks Chris” McKenna said seeing one of the vehicles splutter to a stop “we’re heading towards Point Gamma we’ll lead them away and circle around.”  She said above them the sky suddenly erupted with energy as lighting struck out striking the ground near them.

â€œSERIOUSLY!” Christopher shouted looking up “guys we need to get the out of this storm.  George what do you think?”  He asked George knew more about the planet’s weather than any of them.

â€œOur armour will protect us for eight to ten hours” he replied taking a shot at the second vehicle missing the target.  Christopher switched frequencies to a private one shared between him and George.

â€œHow long will McKenna and Sylvester last?”  He asked as the sky lit up with further electric discharges.

â€œAn hour at the most depending on how bad the storm gets our armour is designed to protect someone in the void of space human skin isn’t.”  George replied taking another shot this time striking one of the vehicles the bullet went straight through the vehicle’s door and into the pirate behind it killing them.  “She’ll be fine” he said they all knew that Christopher and McKenna were involved before it hadn’t been a problem since they had been in different teams now was different.

McKenna and Sylvester’s vehicle was moving quickly with Sylvester having emptied his weapon and in the process of empting McKenna’s.  Bullets from the pusuing vehicles were peppering their utility vehicle “this could be going better.”  McKenna said but there wasn’t a reply “Sylvester!”  She barked glancing over her shoulder her teammate was laying in the rear cab a growing puddle of blood below him.  “Sierra One I’ve lost India Two he’s KIA.”  She reported

â€œUnderstood” Christopher said glancing up as more cracks of lighting shot through the sky “abandon Gamma come right to us.”

â€œAre you crazy?  Your armour can only take so much and if we can’t take them we’ll be in a running battle again.  I don’t have my armour” McKenna said her voice slightly paniced as further pirate small arms fire tore into her vehicle.

â€œDo it, we’ll be ready George set up a surprise.”

â€œWe’ve only got limited supplies boss” George started.

â€œIf need be we’ll break into another cache we can’t do this job with just two of us.”

â€œWe’ll be lucky to do it with three” George muttered Christopher was almost ready to snap at him but noticed the other trooper had already moved Christopher sighted the enemy vehicles taking another shot his shot going wide.  As McKenna turned her vehicle towards them Christopher took another shot this time taking down one of the pirates.  “Ok we’re up approach Bravo McKenna you understand me?”

â€œYeah I’ve got it” she replied ducking as more bullets tore through her vehicle.  The Rabid Fox trained how to approach a position of allies or enemies in various different ways a single code word indicated to a trooper how to approach any situation.  Christopher remained higher than George taking the occasional shot at the chasing pirates taking out one of chasing vehicle’s drivers as McKenna continued to close on them George remained bunkered down waiting for the hover van to pass-by.  Above in the sky the storm’s intensity was continuously increasing Christopher glanced upwards at the energy being used.

â€œMind on the game boss” George said in their private channel reading Christopher’s mind.

â€œFifteen count” Christopher said George nodded counting himself in the deliberate Rabid Fox way at thirteen McKenna’s hover vehicle flew over the planned point two seconds later George detonated his planted explosives destroying the remaining vehicle.  “Good count” Christopher said “we’ve got eight raiders still coming on foot.  McKenna is your vehicle still mobile?”

â€œAffirmative but I don’t know for how long.”

â€œIt’s fine head back to base” Christopher said gunning down one of the still pursuing pirates “George we need to go no jumping in this weather move quickly.”

â€œAlready moving” he said running back up the hill he heard bullets fly past him and ping against the rear of his armour.  Passing Christopher he turned and immediately fired allowing Christopher to retreat for the twenty minutes they retreated like this fortunately for the Rabid Fox the pirate raider’s Mechs were off planet today allowing them to escape.  In the future Christopher guessed the raider’s Mechs would be present as well and now with Sylvester’s passing things would be more difficult.

Rabid Fox Base
Pirate’s Haven, Pirate’s Cluster
Periphery
27th February 3101

The external doors of the Rabid Fox container opened allowing the Infiltrator III Battle Armour suit to enter.  Slowly it maneuvered into its bay and was quickly followed by a second after a few moments the external door closed and the toxic air was vented allowing the internal door to open and for the two troopers to enter the container.  “Want to hear the big new news from pirate town?”  George Hewlett asked Christopher Grant as he saw their commander sitting at the screens.

â€œAn AFFS WarShip armada has entered the system and we’re away to be saved by the Davion Brigade of Guards?”  Christopher asked sarcastically knowing it wasn’t even close to the truth.

â€œAlmost better than that” McKenna Wilde said triumphantly

â€œHow can it be better?”  Christopher asked now interested

â€œNathaniel Gordon is dead” George said triumphantly “one of our shots did a bit more damage than take off his arm the bastard’s dead the pirates are in chaos!”  He said crashing down onto one of the chairs.

â€œWe saw two pirate Mechs fighting each other on the outskirts of the base of operations chaos is an understatement” McKenna confirmed.

â€œThen it’s time to up our timetable” Christopher said “once your suits are recharged we are going into their facility.  You two will strike at the Brigand factory I will go after Gordon’s records and see if we can get some information about the people lost to these pirates on Malagrotta.”

â€œI thought we were going to just go after the factory?  The three of us can’t evacuate thousands of civilians.”  McKenna pointed out

â€œNo but we can find information on them” Christopher said “maybe give the next team a chance of helping some of these people.”

â€œThe armour’s going to take a couple of days until we’ve cleaned out the sand, check functionality and powered it back-up” George said glancing back at the four Battle Armour suit’s Sylvester Keeler’s still sitting silently alongside their own.

â€œWe can use that time to study the plans we have and work out how we’re getting to Post Omega” Christopher said.

â€œSomething we wouldn’t need to do if the powers that be had put the comm. grear in all the pods.”  George complained for about the thousandth time.

â€œThose Black Boxes cost a fortune” McKenna said

â€œAnd so does training us but they didn’t skimp on that” George pointed out the money that had been spent on the Rabid Fox training, their Battle Armour suits, the base facilities and their transport here dwarfed that of the cost of the Black Boxes made available to certain supply points but not all of them.

â€œThe bean counters have got to draw a line somewhere” Christopher said looking over at the complaining trooper “when we get back to New Avalon you can lodge your complaint.  Now get some sleep both of you we’re going to have a couple of busy days.”  He said George nodded while McKenna climbed into her own bunk and was soon asleep leaving Christopher to look over the records.
