Raising the Bear (Alternate Timeline with Thanks AU Story)
« on: August 30, 2013, 06:08:15 AM »

Another side story from the timeline this time from a wish of David CGB to contribute.  A plan for something to happen and a series of events that followed it...  My thanks to David CGB for the contribution and the offer to help - I hope you enjoy it

This first bit is mine, I really wanted to play about with the Tomahawk OmniMech - the original one not the "II" - so here's a little play

Trial of Possession
Forest's End, Porozistu Mountains
Tukayyid, Rasalhague Dominion
11th November 3088

For all the Clan's had changed and lost in the years since their return to the Inner Sphere there was two things they generally held in high regard.  Honourable combat against an enemy in open combat which pitted each warrior against the next instead of which tactic, or which terrain.  The other was tradition, each Clan held close to its own routes and each Clan believed it was honouring the Founder of the Clans, Nicholas Kerensky in their own way.  Because of these facts when Clan Wolf declared a Trial of Possession over the city of Skupo on the world of Tukayyid the Rasalhague Dominion took the Wolf wish with respect and honour.  Tukayyid was a world disliked by most clansmen it was on this world that the Clan invasion had faltered to a stop for fifteen years the Clans were not allowed to cross the imaginary line drawn across the Inner Sphere by the world of Tukayyid.  Fifteen years that the Clans had themselves changed so much that few even considered a unified invasion to be a worthwhile endeavour.  The Rasalhague Dominion had inherited the world when they took possession of the remains of the Free Rasalhague Republic they defended it as honour demanded but had done little to the world, the Bears wanted little to do with the world.

With an unwanted possession the Clans generally did not battle for it instead they traded not wasting anything on it.  Tukayyid was different however, it's world had history that would forever bind the invaders and passing it like a pallet of goods ignoring that history was not the Clan thing to do.  Instead the Eighth Bear Cuirassiers commanded by Star Colonel Angela Bekker had been transferred to the world to meet with Clan Wolf's First Wolf Assault Cluster commanded by Star Colonel Cyrill Sradac.  As the defender Angela Bekker had chosen Forest's End at the edge of the Porozistu Mountains as the sight for the trial, it was only a few kilometres from the settlement of Skupo and it had historical significance for Clan Wolf, as it was the sight of the first battle between Clan Wolf and ComStar during the ill-fated Battle of Tukayyid which ended the Clan's invasion.

What Bekker did not consider the Wolves had been victorious at Forest's End, and in the battle following it, Angela Bekker herself a veteran of the Battle of Tukayyid believed that the Wolves return to Tukayyid would not repeat history.  After a bidding war between the Star Captains of her Cluster Bekker fielded two Binaries supporting her own command Star, against her forces stood a Clan Wolf force that numbered just two Binaries, she had an entire advantage over the Wolves.  "Clan Ghost Bear of the Rasalhague Dominion I Cyrill Sradac of Clan Wolf, Star Colonel commanding the First Wolf Assault Cluster declare our desire to possess the settlement of Skupo."  Sradac began traditionally as the attacker.

"Star Colonel Cyrill Sradac and the Wolves of the First Wolf Assault Cluster, I am Star Colonel Angela Bekker commander of the Eighth Bear Cuirassiers, we defend the Rasalhague Dominion from any aggressor, and we retain all our Clan's Possessions."

"A battle will decide what you Possess, Bear"

"It will Wolf" she replied, it was all ritualized, both officers knew there would be a battle for the last week they had known there would be a battle but history and tradition dedicated this ritual.

"You appear not to have taken all your Cubs to defend what you possess, Quiaff?"

"Aff, I brought plenty to crush your pups."  Angela taunted back, it was nice to spar with another Clansmen, even if he was a Wolf.

"We will be the judge of that, Angela Bekker"

   "To the Victor, Cyrill Sradac"

   "To the Victor" he repeated

"Seyla" they then both said in unison.  For several moments there was complete silence over the radio channels as each Clan warrior respected the agreement of the Trial.  After the silence however the air was filled with challenges and weapons fire as the two Clan forces engaged in ritual combat.  BattleMechs and Battle Armour fought for every inch of the battlefield as the two Clan forces fought following the Clan dueling rights of Zellbrigen, each warrior fighting against one other unit, either one other Mech or five Battle Armoured troopers.  The air was filled with fire as the two Clans fought however almost immediately Angela Bekker had noticed something strange in the Wolf force before the Trial she had seen the Wolves possessed a new Assault OmniMech, named the Tomahawk, she had not realized however all five would be deployed together or how devastating they would be.  Sitting in the cockpit of her Executioner Assault OmniMech she watched as the five one hundred ton OmniMechs battled straight through the Bear lines.

The Tomahawk was as massive as any Clan OmniMech ever build, designed by Clan Wolf as a successor to the aging Dire Wolf OmniMech the Tomahawk looked very similar to the older design tall with broad shoulders the Mech lacked the over shoulder missile rack of the Dire Wolf but it more than made up for it with its weapon arms.  While the Dire Wolf could have as many as five or six weapons mounted in each arm these Tomahawks seemed designed to carry fewer but bigger calibres of weapons.  The lead Mech struck a Wolf Mech first with a pair of Gauss Rifle slugs then followed it up with twinned large lasers which cored the lighter Bear Mech in a single salvo.  The next looked more like a traditional Dire Wolf with the missile rack over its shoulder but from the devastating arms Particle Cannons beheaded first one Mech then another with terrifying accuracy.  A third in the star showered Bear Mechs with advanced tactical missiles and large calibre pulse laser blasts whittling down Bear Armour.

Seeing these Mechs as her units biggest threat Angela accelerated her ninety-five ton machine into range of the enemy star declaring a challenge one of the rear Mechs, the others stepped clear allowing her to close.  Her OmniMech was fater than her enemy and she planned to use that to her advantage.  Using her own Mech's particle cannon at range she used the Executioners MASC system to supercharge the muscles in the Mech's legs rapidly closing the distance between the two Mechs she opened fire with her Assault class Ultra Autocannon and laser as she closed.  Seeing the massive weapon's slugs tear down the side of the Wolf Mech Angela was quite pleased with the results as she turned her Executioner's shifting its course far enough to make the shot tougher for her opponent.  The Wolf pilot retained his balance tracking her Mech with his Tomahawk's big arms twisting its turret-like torso to follow the Bear OmniMech.  First short range missiles peppered the Executioners legs and back which Angela easily shrugged off however then she saw the Tomahawk raise its arms, where she carried a single assault class Ultra Autocannon, this Tomahawk had two of the massive weapons.  The first weapon went wide tearing up some of Tukayyid's long battered landscape the second however tore through the Executioners leg and torso armour causing massive armour damage.

Angela engaged her Mech's jump jet system in an attempt to avoid the Tomahawk's follow up fire but further missile strikes struch her Mech as it flew through the air, as it landed pulse lasers lashed its arms and back.  Angela turned returning fire with her Executioner's particle cannon, despite it being one of the strongest weapons in the Clan's arsenal against the massive autocannons of her opponent it was a mere pop-gun this close.  Her shot blasted away Wolf armour but the massively armoured Tomahawk continued forward blasting her Mech this time with both autocannons, the Executioners armour breached nearly instantly, Angela Bekker did not wait for the results of the fire she knew already her fight was over.  Instead she pulled the ejection cords and her command chair flew from the dying Executioner over the still raging battle.

For Angela Bekker today had brought defeat, for the Ghost Bears of the Rasalhague Dominion the same result had swiftly followed the Eighth Bear Cuirassers troopers having nothing that could counter the Wolves new Assault OmniMech.  Although the Clans honoured and relished victory in combat, there was no dishonour in admitting you were defeated.  The Bears at nearly half their starting strength had requested Hegira, Honourable Withdrawal, from the Battle enough blood had been spilled over something the Bears cared little for, Cyrill Sradac had accepted nearly immediately happy the Bears had honoured his Wolves with combat.

Within a few days of the battle the Wolves had taken full possession over the settlement of Skupo.  Officially it was a city however for decades people had left the world and now the settlement numbered less than ten thousand.  Clan Wolf however had no interest in the local population, declaring Skupo a possession of Clan Wolf they ordered all native and "Bear Immigrant" populations to leave their territory then they began to systematically level the city building by building.  What each Clan did within its own territory was an internal matter, the Bears who continued to possess the rest of Tukayyid watched the Wolves but events beyond the world would soon tear Bear attention from the Wolves demolition of a single city.  Long known for their long attention spans and slow reaction speeds the Trial had raised the Bear's attention to its enemies actions, but the events of the coming days and weeks would awaken the Bear fury and their desire for conquest.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

The ideas behind this one came from David CGB, I simply brought them in line with how the story had to go.

Hope you enjoy

Silverdale, Alshian
Alshian District, Rasalhague Dominion
1st March 3089

Without warning Clan Ghost Bear is rocked to its core as a series of suicide bombings occur in Silverdale the Clan's capitol city on Alshian, the bombings happen at nearly the same time locally throwing the entire city into chaos.  These bombings targeted to densely packed areas kill nearly three hundred people and injure hundreds more.  As a precaution against further attack and to stop further injuries from debris and shrapnel the local Constabulary forces order everyone to remain within their designated buildings.  This included those within the Unity Building at the heart of the city.  Built by Clan Ghost Bear as a place the Clan could meet with the local Rasalhague people and make decisions for the entire population the Unity Building was a symbol of the Rasalhague Dominion's efforts in successfully merging Clan and Inner Sphere cultures and populations.  A building that's very name was designed to inspire the people of the Rasalhague Dominion to better themselves for the future was designed and built to the highest of Clan standards, with everyone ordered to stay within their designated buildings the Unity Building literally locked down shutting itself off from the outside world as the computers running its environmental systems took over.

The design of the building and its symbolic nature made it the target of the second round of attacks, as the Ghost Bears tried to tend to those injured in the streets of Silverdale a bio-chemical agent was released into the Unity Building's air conditioning and environmental systems, before the computers could detect this agent and purge it a cyber attack was launched on the building confusing the basic computer minds forcing the entire building to remain under lock-down.  By the time the three hundred-and-sixty-two people within the building realized what was happening it was almost too late with many dying within the first few minutes.  By the time the Ghost Bear Constabulary breached the building's containment there were only twelve people alive, all in critical condition, within the building's server and control rooms the Ghost Bears found four terrorists each of whom had committed the act of Seppuku, ritual suicide, an act common within the neighbouring Draconis Combine.  Among the dead within the Unity Building was Khan Bjorn Jorgensson, leader of the Rasalhague Dominion, and almost his entire senior support staff.  Immediately the Ghost Bears called for a Clan Council and for all Bloodnamed warriors to return to Alshian.

Three days after the attacks the Clan Watch confirmed that all four terrorists found within the Unity Building were former members of the Second Sword of Light Regiment of the Draconis Combine Mustard Society.  Each had recently been declared as ronin from their unit for unspecified reasons.  Nearly a week after the attacks as Ghost Bear Bloodnamed warriors streamed onto Alshian the Watch confirmed that the chemical weapons were of a variety that was produced on Dieron during the Star League-era, although the Watch had no evidence to support any claim that they were produced there now.

Silverdale Spaceport, Alshian
Alshian District, Rasalhague Dominion
8th March 3089

Nearly a week after the initial attacks on Silverdale a second "attack" occurs a DropShip, carrying Loremaster Rodrigo Jorgensson, explodes in mid-air.  The Vanir type DropShip crashes out of control on approach towards the Silverdale Spaceport killing everyone on board and over one hundred ground staff.  Although these is no evidence to prove this attack was orchestrated by the Draconis Combine the Ghost Bears already angry at the first attack are furious at this newest incident.  As news began to spread, of the attacks on Alshian, to Ghost Bear units on the Draconis Combine border anger boiled within the Clan warriors ranks their enemy so close, without their Bloodnamed warriors to keep discipline in check individual units began to launch raids on the worlds of Kiesan, Najha, Chandler, Pilkhua and Numki.  These raids completely unexpected overwhelmed the Draconis Combine's Second District of Benjamin Regulars, the First Amphigean Light Assault Regiment and three mercenary units.

The Ghost Bear troops not held back by thoughts of honour or by the leadership of their bloodnamed warriors wiped out the defending Inner Sphere troops to the man slaughtering even surrendering troops and support staff.  On hearing of their units actions against the Combine the Ghost Bear Clan Council ordered all units to hold their positions until further notice, they do not however order the units who were on recently captured Draconis Combine worlds to fall back.

Carrying on with the Bears... more from the core timeline shortly

Silverdale, Alshian
Alshian District, Rasalhague Dominion
12th March 3089

Following further analysis of the attacks on Alshian by Clan Ghost Bear's Watch the Rasalhague Dominion confirms that the terrorists found within the Unity Building following the attack were agents of the Draconis Combine and that the bio-chemical agent was in fact manufactured on the world of Dieron.  Presented with this information the Ghost Bear Council and Rasalhague's Unity Council vote for war with the Draconis Combine.

By vote of the council Free Rasalhague Republic Prince and Ghost Bear saKhan Ragnar Magnesson is promoted to the position of Khan.  Ragnar captured during the initial Clan invasion had served both with Clan Wolf and with the Ghost Bears for many years in 3087 his bloodline had been added to the Ghost Bear genetic pool and the Magnesson Bloodhouse had been founded with Ragnar being its first and so far only member, Bear scientists had already began the Bloodhouses breeding program but it would be years before more were born to the house.  The New Khan refuses to name targets for the Invasion of the Draconis Combine however the world of Dieron features heavily on many's thoughts.

With the rise of Ragnar Magnesson the new Khan names Star Colonel Angela Bekker, commander of Eighth Bear Cuirassiers Cluster of Delta Galaxy the Blitzkrieg Galaxy, as his new saKhan.  Although she was recently defeated on Tukayyid fighting against Clan Wolf her dealing with the Wolves and dealing with defeat have endeared her to many, and the Clan Council see her potential supporting the Khan's choice.

Two days later Galaxy Commander David Bekker was named as the new Clan Loremaster.  David Bekker commander of the Ghost Bears newly risen Epsilon Galaxy, the Polar Bear Assault, was seen as a strange choice by many however his close friendship with Ragnar Magnesson was attributed to this appointment.  This twin appointments of David Bekker and Angela Bekker before him promotes the Bekker Bloodhouse to its highest position among the Bloodhouses for many decades.  With their leadership ready the Rasalhague Dominion prepare for their assaults on the Draconis Combine, unlike their initial attacks now fully supported by the Clan.

Omni-Paradise Hotel, Orestes
Orestes District, Rasalhague Dominion
20th March 3089

Just as Rasalhague Dominion units begin to move on the Draconis Combine worlds of Shirotori, Caldrea and Sulafat a massive explosion demolishes the Omni-Paradise Hotel on Orestes killing three hundred-and-seventy-eight civilians, four members of the Rasalhague Dominion's Unity Council and Selanna Jorgensson, head of the Jorgensson Bloodhouse.  A second attack twelve hours later rocks the world of Rasalhague killing six hundred civilians and thirty-eight warriors as a train is derailed near the centre of the capital city causing massive damage.  In both occasions the Watch determines that the explosives originated from the Draconis Combine but that Motstand, the Rasalhague Dominion's native revolutionary/terrorist organisation, had conducted the attacks.  Khan Ragnar Magnesson orders all Rasalhague Dominion forces to cease attacks on the Draconis Combine postponing their invasion for a second time as he charges the Ghost Bear Watch with tracking down and finally eliminating the Motstand organization.

Hayden Arms Estate, Orestes
Orestes District, Rasalhague Dominion
23rd March 3089

Following the terrorist bombings and the Khan's order the Watch aggressively pursued Motstand members using any and all means across the Rasalhague Dominion Watch Strike Teams hit believed Motstand hold-outs, some are empty however others are far more active.  Three days after the Orestes bombing Watch forces tracked Albert Gronvold-Minami down to the Hayden Arms Building Estate on Orestes.  Unveiling their new anti-insurgent Battle Armour, the Constable, the Watch troopers assaulted Albert Gronvold-Minami and his supporters with teams using the Constable's heavy Grenade Launchers to flush out defenders into the path of Rogue Bear Battle Armour suits using heavy machine guns.  Even though the Bears had a massive advantage in resources and firepower the fighting quickly spread over six blocks of the building estate as further Motstand supporters came out engaging the Bears from several angels.  After several hours of fighting two hundred-and-twelve civilian, eighty-four terrorist, and six Watch paramilitary police troopers deaths.

Albert Gronvold-Minami was killed trying to escape in a Baily Armoured Car as he attempted to breach the Ghost Bear cordon.  According to initial reports he survived the vehicle's destruction but was executed on the spot by Ghost Bear troopers.  Across the Rasalhague Dominion opinion polls were split on whether Minami should have been executed or put on trial.  Legal experts believed the Bears had been in the wrong that the Rasalhague Dominion legal system should have been allowed to deal with the terrorist, Khan Ragnar Magnesson meanwhile applauded their efforts and ordered the resumption of attacks on the Draconis Combine.

Rasalhague Dominion Offensive
Buckminster Prefecture, District of Benjamin
Draconis Combine
29th March 3089

With their own internal problems in check Clan Ghost Bear could turn its full attention on their external enemy, the Draconis Combine.  Rasalhague Dominion forces launched full assaults on the worlds of Trolloc Prime, Gram, Shimosuwa and Buckminster as it drove into the Draconis Combine far overtaking both the Wolves and Jade Falcons as they struck ever closer to Terra.  On the world of Buckminster, capital of the Buckminster Prefecture, the Ghost Bears find the Second Sword of Light Regiment.  With members of the regiment implicated in the attacks on Alshian the Ghost Bear's Polar Assault Galaxy led by newly promoted Loremaster David Bekker launch a full assault on the world supported by the WarShip Tseng, a Conqueror-class Battle-cruiser/Carrier, gaining air superiority quickly the Bears chase the Second Sword of Light across the world before finally destroying them near the planet's capital city.  Loremaster David Bekker orders the survivors interrogated by the Clan Watch before their execution.  With another group of targets secure the Bears secure their positions before the Khan confirms that Dieron is still the Clan's target and that the next wave will go ahead as planned.  Bekker and the Watch operatives discover that Motstand are in league with elements of the DCMS and together they had planned to cripple the Ghost Bears of the Rasalhague Dominion.

Draconis Combine Counter Attack
Alshian District, Rasalhague Dominion
16th April 3089

Unable to re-position in time to block the current Rasalhague Dominion drive towards Vega and Dieron DCMS units supported by several WarShips launched a counter offensive on the Rasalhague Dominion intended on catching the Ghost Bear's attention and distracting the invasion.  Several DCMS Regiments landed on the worlds of Tinaca, Marawi, Sheliak and Keasong, all in close proximity to the Rasalhague Dominion's capitol world Alshian.  With these worlds so far from the front lines the DCMS units found only Garrison Clusters and front-line units stripped of much of their equipment.  Fighting using Clan traditions of Zellbrigen the Combine regiments are able to secure Marawi, Sheliak and Keasong from the defenders in quick succession.  Due to their use of Zellbrigen the DCMS units won much respect from the Ghost Bears of the Rasalhague Dominion who saw the Draconis Combine troops as more honourable than the renegade Motstand forces of their own worlds.

At almost the same time as the Draconis Combine invasion of Tinaca the Watch were highly active on the world tracking down the last remnants of Motstand.  Ordered by Loremaster David Bekker to track down and eliminate Motstand by any means the Watch force had brought not only the Constable and Rogue Bear units from previous battles but also an entire Trinary of Ursus PR BattleMechs.  The Watch forces ignored news of the Draconis Combine invasion instead they continued to close on Motstand.  Giving the rebels one final chance to stand down and face the Rasalhague's legal system which the Motstand members refused instead declaring they had hostages and that the bears would have to fight through them to get to the Motstand members.  The rebels use of human shields infuriated the Ghost Bears, already with authorization to use any means to eliminate the rebels the Watch commanders ordered an all out frontal assault.

Nearly three hundred civilians and one hundred Motstand members were cut down as the Ghost Bears were in-discriminant with their fire targeting all that did not wear a Ghost Bear uniform.  Although these actions sent ripples throughout the Rasalhague Dominion they also sent a clear message that the Rasalhague Dominion's government and their Ghost Bear military were in control of all their worlds.  Within the Motstand casualties was Cilla Amdahl the last surviving member of the Motstand leadership, for now at least the movement was dead and buried.  Turning their attention to the Draconis Combine's First Night Stalkers Regiment the Watch forces declared a second Trial of Possession against the DCMS unit.  With the regiment's best warriors still engaged in the first Trial of Possession the Watch forces fought the less experienced members of the Night Stalkers and won.  With the Night Stalkers victorious against the Garrison Cluster and the Watch unit were victorious in their own Trial.  The Night Stalkers commander Tai-sa William Corban chose to retreat from the world with the units honour intact instead of declaring a third trial.  The Watch's victory against Motstand and then against the DCMS impressed many within the Ghost Bears and the wider Rasalhague Dominion.

Third Wave, Rasalhague Dominion Offensive
Vega Prefecture, District of Benjamin
Draconis Combine
22nd April 3089

Following the orders of the Khan Rasalhague Dominion forces launch an attack on the Draconis Combine worlds of Tsukude, Alnasi and Vega, capital of the Vega Prefecture.  both Tsukude and Alnasi fall without issue to the Rasalhague Dominion forces however Vega is another matter.  Defended by Three District of Benjamin Regulars Regiments, two Genyosha Regiments and three WarShips the world is a far tougher nut to crack than any other previously encountered by the Rasalhague Dominion.  Arriving personally aboard the WarShip Ursla Major, a Nightlord-class Battleship, Khan Ragnar Magnesson finds his troops ready for another long battle but he also sees that his people are tired of the conflict too.  As he is pondering how to resolve the situation and how to attack the world the Combine defenders are reinforced by the arrival of the WarShip DCS Battle of Luthien, a Kyushu-class Frigate, carrying elements of the Third Genyosha Regiment and Warlord of Pesht Minoru Kurita.

Instead of ordering an all out attack on the world of Vega Khan Ragnar Magnesson chooses to speak with Warlord Minoru Kurita.  Instead of ordering a full offensive on the world which would likely destroy both armies the two leaders come to a compromise.  Loremaster David Bekker and his Polar Bear Assault Galaxy will fight against Warlord Minoru Kurita's Third Genyosha Regiment supported by elements of the other units on the world.  Should the Rasalhague Dominion win they gain control of the entire Vega Prefecture and end hostilities.  Should the defenders prevail the Rasahague Dominion will retreat to the Buckminster Prefecture and end hostilities.  On Vega in a near six hour battle the Draconis Combine defenders are victorious over the Polar Bears and the Rasalhague Dominion retreats back to the newly captured worlds formerly known as the Draconis Combine's Buckminster Prefecture.

Loremaster David Bekker offers his Khan his resignation following the defeat on Vega however the Khan refuses instead he names David Bekker and the Polar Bear Assault Galaxy as the defenders of the newly occupied territories.  Khan Ragnar Magnesson goes on to say that further Polar Bear units will be raised in the future with David Bekker's unit training them.  In the Draconis Combine things are not as peaceful however as many within the Draconis Combine and within the ranks of the DCMS begin to look at the Warlord of Pesht, Minoru Kurita, as their leader instead of Vincent Kurita.  Many argue that the Ghost Bear attacks were pre-planned and that the units despite having no real leadership knew exactly where and how to hit.  Many within the Combine who have lost loved ones in the fighting or are now cut off from those now in newly occupied Clan space believe that Vincent Kurita and the ISF have failed them while Warlord Minoru Kurita made the best of a bad situation.  Publicly Minoru Kurita refuses to speak out against his nephew however at the same time he refuses to discount "the obvious" planning and preparation that went into the attacks made by the Bears.  He also speaks out against the SLDF "did not lift a finger while the Clan menace preyed on 'his' nation's borders, his nation supported the Star League because it was designed to unite the Inner Sphere's defences."  These thoughts strike cords within the Lyran Commonwealth who have also felt the destruction caused by the Clans when allowed to run wild, the SLDF refuses to comment outside Star League Council and Official Channels furthering the divide.

And so ends the Ghost Bear side story - all of this will be in the main-timeline thread shortly but this way it all gets told as one story without the other events getting in the way.  My thanks to David_CGB for the ideas the spurred where this went.
