The Needs of One

One

After Capellan actions on Highspire and the rumoured use of nuclear weapons the First Federated Suns Lancers RCT was moved to Chesterton.  The trip had been uneventful until about an hour from the planet.

Now klaxons sounded throughout the  Union-class vessel as Prince Burton Davion made his way to the bridge.  Coming the other way he was surprised to see Countess Pamela Achernar "Pamela I'm on my way to the bridge what's going on?"

"My Prince" she started but Burton could see none of the joy usually associated with those words "the Captain ordered all MechWarriors to their Mechs"

"I'm heir to the throne my place is on the bridge where I can make a difference not in a tin can nowhere near land"

"Unless you can magic up a WarShip I don't think there is much you can do."  That was something he should have been able to do the unit was supposed to be under escort from the FSS Lucian Davion but the Avalon-class Cruiser had sprung a helium leak before the last jump and was stranded ten light years away.  The unit had continued as the move was a precaution with no real threat having been made against Chesterton.

"What's going on?" He asked again.

"A Congress-class Frigate appeared from behind Chesterton doesn't match the profile of any of our ships or any known ships of the Class.

"I should be on the bridge I can talk to them demand they stand down" he said trying to push passed her but Pamela reached out stopping him.

"That would defeat the purpose of the plan in ten minutes the Regiment's DropShips will accelerate while the Avalon One and her escorts change course.  We think the WarShip is after you they will think you are on the Avalon One or one of the Blockade Runners."

"Those ships can't return the firepower of a Congress-class Frigate or defend against ones attack."  He pointed out

"That isn't the plan my prince the plan is to get you in your tin can of a Mech" she said smirking considering what most MechWarriors thought of their mechs she found his reaction refreshing "to the atmosphere and to somewhere you can make a difference."

"Even if it costs us the RCT?" He asked coldly

"The needs of one outweigh the few" she said quietly "to coin a phrase."

"Slightly mixed up there" he said quietly but understood her meaning "come with me ride in the back it'll be a bumpy ride but I can get you down" he said grabbing her arm.  Pamela did not resist his grasp instead she leant in kissing him strongly on the lips.

"Our paths go different ways, My Prince" she whispered breaking off the embrace.  "You are destined to lead our nation I an destined to make sure you get there."

"I have brothers and sisters, my father is going nowhere soon" he said desperately searching for other options.

"It's not set in stone what is planned for today.  I'll see you again."  She promised him Burton slowly let her go turning back towards the Mechbay he heard Pamela speak into a comm. device "Delta Two intercepted and on way" she said there was a reply Burton couldn't make out before he heard her reply "yes, sir on my way."

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

What's the date?

It's going to be either 3088 or 3089 in my AU depending on how a couple of other ideas play out this story is pretty contained compared to the rest of the events that surround it I wanted to explore Victor's heirs development a bit

I think I may do one about Jessica Steiner too and her story

Two

As Prince Burton Davion reached the Mechbay he saw several techs swarming over his Templar fitting a high atmosphere descent rig.  The OmniMech had jump jets which could do the job but this system was more efficient and easier to control.  "Looks about ready Chief Tech?"  He asked the senior maintenance technician.

"Yes sir, we just have safety checks to do..."

"Hang them" Burton interrupted "trust your techs to do their jobs first time and move on we're on a clock"

"The Captain said to make certain you had the best chance..."

"This is still my company do your jobs right first time around and get this company ready.  Start on Mechs that lack jump jets give as many MechWarriors a chance."

"Aye, sire" the tech replied triumphantly "you hear that you lazy sods the Prince wants a company ready.  Sack the safety checks but double each other as you go."  He ordered the 'tech checks' took half the time as regulation safety checks but were just as effective and a mainstay of battlefield operations.

Burton nodded satisfied the techs had the company in order and moved to his Mech the senior tech took a step with him "Chief, I'm a big boy I can look after myself help your people."

"Thank you sir" the chief said taking a step towards the next Mech that even now techs were swarming over.

"And Chief?" The Tech turned towards him "make sure your people don't overstay on the sinking ship" he said the Chief glanced up then back at Burton who nodded.  The tech understood what Burton meant and how bad things could be stood and gave Burton a full salute in thanks for the Prince's warning.

Changing quickly into his coolant suit Burton climbed the ladder to the Templar's shoulder as he did sirens sounded warning of an immediate course change.  Burton braced as the Union felt like it had turned end over end in a tight turn.  One of the Techs slipped off the Marauder he was working on but the safety harness saved him from a messy end.

Staggering into the cockpit Burton squeezed down onto the command chair.  Immediately he began start up checks and switched on both his communication suite and sensor package as a Company Commander's Mech its systems were tuned to the DropShip's own giving Burton at least a glimpse of what was happening.

Outside in space Burton could see the Lancers had arranged themselves in two groups one contained the Mech and ground forces while the other contained the Regiments assault forces and the Avalon One, Burton's personal ship, he'd gotten lucky since up until the last jump he had been on that ship instead of this one at least her be could prepare for a fight.

As the potentially hostile Congress closed on the Lancers the DropShip groups began to cross and merge the idea was simple give the WarShip gunners too many targets for their guns to effectively engage.  Most AFFS DropShip Captains had trained against the Federated Suns' own Congress-class vessels which were better equipped to handle this kind of tactic.  At the same time the Avalon One and her escorts would try to punch through the enemy defences.  Hopefully gaining their attention making the WarShip and turn to chase them as the theory was they wanted to kill the Federated Suns heir.

As the two opposing forces met further alarms sounded and lights popped throughout the Mechbay as the DropShip made further course changes.  Burton felt the gravitational forces on his body as the DropShip accelerated, he did his best to blank out the pressure concentrating on the display.  An unlucky Gazelle type DropShip took a naval autocannon blast and disappeared from sensors just before the Avalon One and her escorts made a daring run at the Congress.

According to the Union's sensor feet to Burton's Templar the Avalon One came within one hundred and twenty metres as it and the two Blockade Runners tried to take some attention off the other ships.

Further course changes came as the Union continued to move evasively Burton briefly wondered if it was Pamela at the helm before the sensor image got his attention again.  The Avalon One's move had bated the Congress but perhaps too much as the Frigate turned its full broadside on the ship.  Although the sensor image showed none of the DropShip's death throws Burton could imagine laser, autocannons and missiles tearing the ship to pieces. As it disappeared from the screens Burton saw that the ship's sacrifice had bought them enough time to reach planetary orbit over Chesterton.  As the Union began to change course a Tech ran out and began to indicate to Burton it was time to move.

Bringing the Templar full online he stepped the eighty five ton OmniMech from its alcove the additional thrusters made the Mech feel far from right but after a few steps Burton could tell they were balanced perfectly as they Mech's gyro fed back to his neuralhelmet.  Stepping to the doors he saw the red light turn to amber bracing for atmospheric insertion Burton felt the friction against the DropShip as it entered the atmosphere the three thousand six hundred ton DropShip shook heavily for several minutes as it transited through the space/atmosphere barrier.

Then all of a sudden, like the eye of a storm, there was complete calm.  The bay doors opened showing Chesterton's atmosphere and the amber light turned to green.  Burton's training kicked in taking several steps forward he launched the Mech into the open air without hesitation knowing the next Mech would be waiting.  Like the paratroopers of ancient Terra they had to trust that their training and their equipment would see them through.

After a few moments of frantic free fall the descent pack kicked in and the Templar's descent became a far more orderly affair almost like an elevator within a large building.  With the rush of free fall over the Prince was happy to see that all twelve of his Mechs were clear of the DropShip and descending at an acceptable pace.  Above them the DopShip was clearing their glide trajectory.

It wasn't over however higher above from orbit naval weapons fire lanced through the sky.  One blast smashed into the top of the Union crumpling its armour instantly turning the spheroid vessel into a ball of flame as its descent turned into an uncontrolled fall.

"No!" Burton called out but it was too late the ship was gone.  His thoughts went to Pamela Achernar, her beautiful face and bright future, but then he was brought back to reality as the Templar's sensors detected the Aerospace Fighters raising towards him and the rest of the Lancers, none with friendly IFF tags...

Three

As the fighters rose towards Burton's descending Templar and the other Lancers, the Prince looked at the aircraft, he didn't recognise the designs that looked alien to anything he'd ever seen.

Each had a small profile with twin stabilising fins and what looked like adjustable wings.  No aerospace fighter Burton knew of had adjustable wings these looked more like the conventional fighters carried by wet navy aircraft carriers.  The speed the fighters produced alone indicated they were aerospace craft the first particle canon blast fired from one of the smallest of the craft almost proved it.

The blast caught the Templar high on the torso but did little damage other than some burned armour plate.  Burton vectored the landing jets turning his Mech towards the rising craft bringing his LB-X autocannons in line with the targets checking that cluster ammo was selected he let off a burst in the direction of the fighters.  Dozens of autocannon cluster munitions smashed into the lead fighters Burton wasted no time firing another shot as the fighters tore through the dropping Lancer formation.  He was pleased to see the second blast tear open one of the strange fighters undersides causing it to spin away wildly out of control.

As Burton's Mech continued to fall he watched the sensor display as the fighters turned for another pass, three Lancer Mechs had been lost in the attack.  Burton tried to turn his Mech to face the enemy again but this time the thrusters were too slow.  He felt enemy weapons fire year into the rear of his Mech but was surprised to see no damage on the wireframe display.  Pinging it with his finger in a vain attempt to make it change Burton guessed it was a faulty screen.  Then the penny dropped, and so did the Templar, the Prince realised what had happened at nearly the same time as the first cut out occurred.  The insertion thrusters had been damaged not the Mech "you have got to be kidding!"  Burton shouted as the thrusters re-engaged just in time for an enemy fighter to tear past.  Taking a snapshot Burton was surprised to see a few LB-X pellets hit "I still bite you bastard" he cursed as the thruster pack cut again.  "To hell with...!" He shouted slamming the release.

All at one the thrusters exploded away from the Templar and the breaking parachute deployed cutting the Mechs falling speed dramatically for a few seconds which all Burton needed to engage his Mechs own thrusters on an extended burn "enough to get down" he whispered. At least for now the enemy fighters had disengaged the ground forces instead attacking what little remained of the Lancer aerospace fighters which had avoided the Congress and enemy DropShips.

Burton scanned the ground seeing nothing but woodland.  They were landing during the planets night cycle but his sensors would distinguish between enemies and trees, at least he hoped they would.  He suddenly realised none of the Lancer commanders had called in a rendezvous point.  As a company commander he had them all looking at the display he picked one far from any towns or sign of life "this is Delta Two, RVP-20 repeat Romeo-Victor-Two-Zero."  He communicated "the codeword of the day is Abraken.  Repeat Abraken" he said into the speaker each Mech had a code number that related to the codeword.  These were committed to memory by each warrior and trooper if not given when entering the Rendezvous Point a unit would be fired upon whether they looked friendly or not.

Cutting off the communications Burton braced as the Templar entered the tree canopy.  There was nothing here that could stop the falling eighty-five ton OmniMech but it was still never a nice feeling as tree branches tore and scratched at the Mech's paintwork.  The jump jets fired one final time bringing the Mech down to a relatively soft landing.

Cutting off the jump jets Burton immediately turned his Mech to the left away from the RVP moving three hundred metres he stopped and shut every active system off.  Waiting in silence he watched for any movement towards his landing point. Burton didn't know how much time passed sitting there but soon he realised he was safe from immediate threat and was in a position to pay his enemies back for the damage and pain they had already caused.
