Overview
The Nova Cat OmniMech has been embraced by the Clan Nova Cat front-line forces
as the Clans primary OmniMechs. There was however, a second design that was to be debuted
alongside the Nova Cat and support the Nova Cat that was forgotten as the Nova Cat Clan was
abjured from Clan Space. During Nova Cat’s Adjournment and the Combine/Ghost Bear War of
the mid-late 3060s the Nova Cats discovered a potential problem with the Nova Cat, its speed
although this was countered most of the time with the use of long range laser weaponry for running
battles the Nova Cat was caught at a disadvantage that against Clan opponents was deadly.
To compensate for this the Nova Cat’s first looked at upgrading the Nova Cat however
ever time they changed the design MechWarriors moaned that the design was compromised by
the changes. Instead of changing the Nova Cat they decided to revive the second design, pulling
the prototype out of mothball, the Nova Cats transferred the design to Avon and over the course of
three years the design evolved into what it is today, the Dragon Cat the clan’s newest and
possibly last home-grown OmniMech.
Capabilities
At the core of the Dragon Cat is a revolutionary chassis named after the design
although it acts like any other Endo Steel it is cheaper and easier to produce fitting the Nova Cats
needs finely. At the heart of the design is another newly designed piece of equipment the Avon
Mk VI 350 Extra-Light Fusion engine, the Avon design of fusion plant is cheap, reliable and easy to
produce given the Nova Cat’s limited resources and will power the future of Nova Cat OmniMechs
and BattleMechs. Protecting the OmniMech’s chassis and engine is Clan Diamond Shark’s newly
produced Forging AM15 Ferro Fibrous armour manufactured on Twycross the armour is tried and
tested and considering the Nova Cat/Diamond Sharks long relationship the use of foreign armour
was not seen as a problem by Nova Cat scientists.
With twenty-nine and a half tons of pod space the Nova Cats had a few options of how
to arm the OmniMech. Eventually finding a niche for the OmniMech they armed the Dragon Cat to
serve as a command Mech in the Clan Nova Cat Touman. To this end they decided to maximise
the Dragon Cat’s armour giving it battlefield longevity and in every configuration they gave the
OmniMech a left torso mounted targeting computer much like the older Warhawk Assault
OmniMech which would give the pilot more freedom to command warriors while still laying down
accurate weapons fire.
The Prime Configuration of the Dragon Cat gives another indication of how the Nova
Cats decided to arm this OmniMech. For its main direct fire armament the Dragon Cat Prime
carries a Large Pulse Laser and two Medium Pulse Lasers in the Left Arm and a pair of Heavy
Medium Lasers in the Left torso giving the Mech heavy and accurate firepower. On the opposite
side of the Mech a twelve-tube Advanced Tactical Missile (ATM) Launcher in the right arm with
three tons worth of rounds in Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE) protected ammo bin
round out the offensive armament. The adaptability of this weapons system allows the
MechWarrior to carry heavy close range ammunition for close-quarters brawls or long range
sniper ammunition for long range warfare or even a combination of the two types of ammo
allocated in full ton lots. In the right side torso there are three additional heat sinks adding to the
Mechs fourteen built-in Heat Sinks all are double strength. For additional defence the design
carries a central mounted Anti-Missile System with a ton of reloads in the right torso.
For the Alpha Configuration of the Dragon Cat the designers chose to go with a Gauss
Rifle in the Left arm supplied with two tons of ammo stored in that same arm, backing this
powerful weapon are three Heavy Medium Lasers in the Right arm all of which when linked to the
targeting computer are as accurate as any other laser in use by the Clans. Backing up the Gauss
Rifle and Lasers is a six-tube Short Range Missile (SRM) with Artemis IV Fire-Control-System
(FCS) in the Right torso with a ton of additional reloads. A Targeting Accusation Gear (TAG) laser
in the Left torso allows the MechWarrior to call in devastating artillery strikes and five torso
mounted jump jets allow the Mech to outmanoeuvre others in urban battles and allows the warrior
to cross hindering terrain quickly without the need to change course.
The Dragon Cat Beta Configuration is a lot like a Summoner (Thor) Prime without the
jump jets. With a class-10 LB-type Autocannon in the left arm, supported by a two ton ammo bin,
and a Extended-Range Large and Medium Laser in the right torso this Mech can strike targets at
medium to long range effectively and accurately. Over the right arm ends in a fifteen-tube
Long Range Missile (LRM-15) launcher the standard targeting computer module, for the
direct-fire weapons, is joined by an Artemis IV FCS for the LRM-15 rack improving missile accuracy
significantly. A central mounted Anti-Missile System, similar to the Prime model, cuts down enemy
missile efficiency. While a Light TAG, a less powerful version of the Alpha’s laser, allows the Mech
to call in friendly artillery support.
The Charlie Configuration is one of the hardest hitting and one of the most expensive.
In each arm there is a Heavy Large Laser and an Extended-Range Medium laser all linked to the
standard targeting computer which eliminates the Heavy Lasers inaccuracy and increases the
Extended-Range lasers accuracy. In each torso there an six-tube Advanced Tactical Missile
Launcher system with three tons of ammo in the right torso, alongside the left torso launcher there
is a Light TAG laser for calling in artillery support. Again like the Alpha Configuration the
designers decided to give the Mech five jump jets mounted in the torso section giving the warrior
options in more options in a tricky situation. Unfortunately with all the laser weaponary this variant
has a tendancy to heat up quickly.
The Delta Configuration is a nightmare. From enemies to the Techs assigned, to the
Mech, MechWarriors who outfit their Dragon Cat in the Delta Configuration are cursed. In each
arm there is an ATM-12 each of which is supplied with three tons of ammo giving the MechWarrior
an ample supply of munitions. Supporting these weapons there is two pairs of torso mounted
Heavy Medium Lasers all linked to the targeting computer. For defence the configuration carries
a central mounted AMS like the Prime and Beta Configurations, however, the design also carries
a myriad of electronics. A TAG laser alongside an Active Probe are mounted in the left torso and
an Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) suite is mounted in the Right torso. With so much
electronics and advanced weapons the Delta is the quintessential command/support Mech
unfortunately because of the expense of maintaining so much equipment only the most
experienced and well equipped units are able to field the Delta Configuration effectively.
Unlike most Clan OmniMechs the Dragon Cat Echo does not exemplify the ATM
technology instead, because the Dragon Cat uses ATM tech in many configurations, the Nova
Cats chose to make an example of the Extended-Range technology that the original Star League
scientists began and Nova Cat scientists perfected, during the Golden Age of the Clans. The
Dragon Cat Echo` is armed with an Extended-Range Particle Projection Cannon (PPC), two
Extended-Range Medium Lasers, two Extended-Range Small Lasers and a Double Heat Sink in
both arms giving the Mech a sweltering amount of firepower and no need to worry about
ammunition problems. A Light TAG gives the Mech basic support functions common on all
Dragon Cat Configurations while five additional Heat Sinks join the Targetting Computer in the
torsos of the Mech. The Dragon Cat Echo is however the perfect long range patrol/strike missions
Mech not needing to re-supply with ammo for any of its weapons.
With the ever increasing threat of Infantry and Battle Armour on the modern Battlefield
the Nova Cat scientists decided the Dragon Cat needed a configuration of weapons that could
eliminate large quantities of Infantry and Battle Armour but still have firepower to destroy Infantry
Support Vehicles and Light or Medium BattleMechs. The Foxtrot Configuration was the result of
their work and once debuted it was almost universally hated. Almost every MechWarrior that saw
the design dreaded even trying to fight a battle with a Mech that has virtually no major Anti-Mech
weapons and only short range weapons and enemy Infantry and Battle Armour hated the even
idea of facing a Mech that could kill large amounts of infantry and Battle Armour quickly and
efficiently which the Dragon Cat Foxtrot excels at.
The Foxtrot Configuration is armed with two Light Machine Guns, a four-tube Streak
Short Range Missile Launcher (SRM-4) and a Heavy Medium Laser in each arm, the Light Machine
Guns and Streak Launchers are each fed by a ton each of ammo which is held in an ammo bin in the
CASE protected Right torso. The Mech’s main anti-Mech weapons are an Ultra-type class-5 Autocannon
in the right torso with two tons of ammo held in an ammo bin along side the autocannon in a CASE bin
the second weapon is a left torso Large Pulse Laser an accurate
weapon with decent punch. To support the weapons are a large bevy of equipment that can aid
the MechWarrior fighting in close quarters the standard Targeting Computer improves the
accuracy of weapons, an ECM Suite blocks enemy Command-Communication-and Control (C3)
nets and sensor systems, an Active Probe helps find enemy units and a Light TAG allows the
Foxtrot to call in artillery. All this gives the MechWarrior plenty of options in finding and fighting
infantry in close quarters.
Pilots of the design complain that the Mech cannot fight other Mechs effectively on the
battlefield and that they find it difficult to manoeuvre the Mech in an urban environment without
jump jets, a near necessary perquisite for an urban fighter. The fact that the first Dragon Cat to be
lost in combat, on Irece at the start of the Jihad, was a model outfitted in this configuration does
nothing to help settle the design in a Nova Cat Warrior’s minds.
With the introduction of yet more new weapons technology in the twilight of the Second
Star League and the beginning of the Word of Blake Jihad the Nova Cats saw a way to extend the
capabilities of the Dragon Cat. Salvaging an Anti-Personnel Gauss Rifle (AP Gauss Rifle) Pod
from a Ghost Bear Dominion OmniMech the Nova Cats quickly reverse-engineered the weapon
and incorporated it in their newest OmniMech. The other weapon technology the Nova Cats were
quick to gain this time through trade with the Diamond Sharks, the Hell’s Horses new Heavy
(Hyper) Assault Gauss Rifle (HAG) Rifle, this new rapid firing gauss rifle with superior range and
striking power than almost any other weapon employed by the Clans or Inner Sphere and has a
devastating impact on Vertical-Take-Off-and-Landing (VTOL) and aerospace units.
With these weapons the Nova Cats built the Dragon Cat Gamma Configuration which
uses a HAG-30, the large-sized HAG Rifle, in the left arm and is supported by three tons of ammo.
The HAG Rifle is supported by two Extended-Range Medium Lasers and two Heavy Medium
Lasers on the right arm giving the Mech superior a long range sniper weapon and close-in
medium range firepower. In the right torso four AP Gauss Rifles and a ton of ammo provides
close in anti-personnel/battle armour defence. Rounding out this configurations arsenal is the
standard targeting computer a Light TAG laser. Eagar to test out the new weapon systems several
warriors opted to use this configuration during the Jihad it received mixed reviews however the best
came from a pair of warriors serving near the Outworlds Alliance
borders, they commented that the HAG Rifle had awesome potential against aerospace fighters.
This comments and further testing proved these claims and this directly led to the Nova Cat
Gamma Configuration which has become the standard anti-aircraft Mech in the Nova Cat Touman.
In early 3077 Clan Nova Cat decided to use the Dragon Cat, as one of it’s most popular
front-line machines, as a test bed for brand-new technology developed by the Clans. Firstly they
turned to the Sea Fox Clan’s newest invention the class-5 Clan Rotary Autocannon, a direct copy
of the Federated Suns Rotary Autocannon with improved range to boot, mounted in the right arm
with two tons of ammo in a right torso ammo bin. Originally the design called for two Extended
-Range Large Pulse Lasers however this was cut down to one laser when the Nova Cats gained
two other new weapon systems, so the single ER Large Pulse Laser is mounted in the right arm
alongside an Improved Heavy Medium Laser. The new ‘Hotel’ configuration last weapon is yet
another new weapon the Clan Streak Long Range Missile Launcher, with fifteen tubes, this
weapon was an overgrowth of the Streak SRM based on LRM format. This weapon was mounted
in the right torso over the shoulder giving the weapon plenty of clearance and a decent launch
platform with two tons of ammo were mounted in the left torso, virtually a lifetime of ammo
considering the Streak technology. The Hotel configuration is unique amongst Dragon Cat
configurations as it does not mount a Targeting Computer - the weight of everything else making it
almost impossible for the Mech to mount any the Mech does however have a Watchdog CEWS system
giving it basic ECM and Active probe abilities.
As the numbers of Dragon Cats increased the Nova Cats chose to add a Hotel
configuration. Armed with four fifteen-tube LRM-15 launchers, two ER Medium Lasers an ER Small Laser
and five Jump Jets the Mech is designed to find a nest and bombard an enemy position with mass LRM
fire.
Deployment
Because of the Dragon Cats use of advanced technology and the expense of building
another OmniMech the Nova Cats built only one production line, under the Avon polar tundra at
the Nova Cat’s most secret and secure base. Turning out one every four months the Nova Cats
built only twenty-four through the entire Jihad however everywhere the Dragon Cat was deployed
it served the Nova Cat Clan valiantly with only two falling to enemy fire. The first one to the Blakist
assault on Irece during the early stage of the Jihad and the second during the initial assaults
against Terra when the Blakists were throwing everything they could at Stone‘s army. The other
twenty-two Mechs served with every Nova Cat Galaxy, and with Nova Cat warriors serving Devlin
Stone’s Army, with high honours often deployed with Nova Cat OmniMechs as the designers had
originally envisioned the design although now the rolls were reserved the Dragon Cat
commanding Nova Cats. In Delta Galaxy which saw some of the heaviest fighting against the
Blakists it was not uncommon for a Dragon Cat, two Nova Cats and two lighter Mechs, such as the
Ocelot and Pack Hunter, to be seen serving together with the Nova Cats providing long range
sniper fire the Dragon Cat could support the lighter Mechs and get stuck into the Word of Blake
forces.
Since the first Deployment the Nova Cats made it clear that the Dragon Cat was not for
export, during the Jihad the Diamond Sharks tried to trade for the design three times and every
time the Nova Cats rebuked the attempt. Twice the Diamond Sharks fought Trials of Possession
for the design and twice the Nova Cats defeated the Merchant-Clan souring the special
relationship the clans held slightly but maintaining the Nova Cat stranglehold on the design. The
Draconis Combine attempted to buy the design, they attempted to fight for the design and
eventually they attempted to steal the design every time the Nova Cats resisted including an
embarrassing defeat of ISF Forces by the Nova Cat‘s Watch Trinary which was led by a
MechWarrior piloting a Dragon Cat OmniMech, Star Colonel Canin Rosse, the Draconis Combine
got the message and left the Nova Cats with the design.
When the Nova Cat Touman was forced back into their enclaves by the Ghost Bears
during the Second Ghost Bear/Draconis Combine war the Nova Cats cut the production of the
Dragon Cat back down to Jihad levels with only one production line, producing only one ever six
months.
By the time of the Republic of the Sphere the Nova Cats still hold a near monopoly on
the design with only two lost outside combat, both of these losses were lost when the Nova Cat’s
Delta Galaxy joined the Republic after the Jihad. In a strange twist of fate the two OmniMechs are
now piloted by Nova Cat warriors, who have since joined the Spirit Cat faction following the
Blackout, although neither has joined the Nova Cat forces entering the Republic as the Spirit Cats
continue to wonder the Republic of the Sphere.
Non-Canon What if Timeline:
In What If Timeline the Dragon Cat project was completed following the Nova Cats
capture of a small Draconis Combine research colony in the Periphery. Because it was scientists
from the nation of the Dragon the Nova Cats chose the name for their newest OmniMech. The first
Dragon Cat is tested on Tortuga in late 3062 by Star Colonel Canin Rosse. Soon the design
became the primary heavy OmniMech of the Nova Cat Touman.
Notable Warriors
Star Colonel Canin Rosse, Watch Trinary.
One of the first Nova Cats to pilot the Dragon Cat when he was on Avon just before the
formation of the Watch Trinary for rest and refit following a successful operation against Black
Dragon forces. Canin Rosse a former Timber Wolf pilot took to the Dragon Cat very well enjoying
the mix of weapons and the hard hitting power of the design as well as the integral use of a
targeting computer and ATMs as well as a heavy emphasis on the use of electronics as well as
weapons in every one of the OmniMech’s various configurations.
Canin piloted the Dragon Cat throughout the Jihad following the Watch Trinary being
attached to Alpha and Delta Galaxies as a sort of go between force when the Nova Cats
assigned the majority of their Touman to join Devlin Stone’s army against the Word of Blake
forces. Canin and his Dragon Cat, and the entire Watch Trinary, served on forty-three worlds
including: Wasat, New Home, Mars and many others. His Mech was also seen on several
occasions fighting alongside Devlin Stone’s Lament, Elite Guard although there are no reports
suggesting Nova Cats were assigned to the same worlds for liberation. When questioned Canin
refused to comment on his or the Watch Trinaries deployments.
At the End of the Jihad and the formation of the Republic of the Sphere Canin piloted
the Dragon Cat for several years as part of Stone’s Lament before retiring to have a family with
one of his officers Star Captain Jennifer Nova Cat, a former member of the Watch Trinary. The
Dragon Cat was placed in a Brian Cache hidden in the Republic of the Sphere following Delta
Galaxies decision to join the Republic and their equipment being turned over to Republic
authorities. Canin’s own Dragon Cat was not turned over instead Canin secreted it on the world
where he eventually settled with Jennifer, Dieudonne, there Canin turned to teaching the young of
the Nova Cat Clan living within the Republic. During the Dark Age-era Canin saw promise in one
of his cadets Trueborn Lee Nova Cat, of the Rosse Bloodline. When the Blackout happened and
old factions began to rise once more Canin turned over the location of his OmniMech to someone
who could do some good with it, Lee Nova Cat.
EDIT: In What If time line Canin is commander of the Watch Cluster and in command of the entire
Tortuga Prime system. Canin serves as the first test pilot of the Mech in 3062 and when he is
offered the opportunity to travel into Federated Suns territory the Dragon Cat travels with him.
When Canin becomes saKhan the Mech gained new wide ranging popularity in the Nova Cats
and then when he became Khan every Clan and many Inner Sphere factions want the Dragon Cat,
still the Nova Cats refuse to trade for the design.
Star Commander Lee Nova Cat, Spirit Cat Shiva Keshik
Born within the borders of the Republic of the Sphere, Lee Nova Cat was born at the
Nova Cat enclave of Dieudonne deep within the Republic’s Prefecture VII in the Rosse
Bloodname Iron Wombs. He was told how to fight as a MechWarrior by the legendary Star
Colonel Canin Rosse (Retired) during his youth. Although Lee was not assigned a Mech straight
out of training Lee did win the rank of Star Commander in his first Trial of Position. Canin Rosse
saw promise in him, possibly in a vision the Nova Cats believe in, and turned over the location of
his old Dragon Cat just as the Blackout began.
Lee retrieved the OmniMech and returned just in time to help the Nova Cat/Republic
Militia turn back an assault from the Stewart-Marik Commonwealth. Following the securing of
Dieudonne from outside interference Lee took his Mech and several other interested parties off
Dieudonne in search of the Spirit Cats, a faction of expatriate Nova Cats who had lived within the
Republic and were now taking to arms in defence of themselves and their culture, travelling as far
as Ozawa in search of them. Lee was saddened to hear the faction’s leader former-Senator Kev
Rosse had been assassinated and the faction itself had been absorbed almost completely by
Clan Nova Cat.
With non-Nova Cats within his forces and never being fully part of the Nova Cat Clan
Lee was unwilling to fully join his parent Clan with other Spirit Cats. Instead he lead his forces
throughout the former-Republic space lending a hand to anyone willing to take their help following
the withdrawal of all Republic forces to the newly redrawn Fortress Republic border lines. In the
last few years Lee, his Dragon Cat, and the warriors assembled around them have gained a
reputation as being some of the most upstanding warriors in the entire this new Age of
Destruction. Some have even been talking about Lee taking his Canin’s Bloodname following
the passing of Canin Rosse, shortly after his informing Lee of the location of the Dragon Cat,
however as no-one is entirely sure where the Star Commander is situated. He is yet to accept
command from the Nova Cat Khan, this movement has proven difficult to support.
Upon hearing of the joint Spirit Cat/Sea Fox assault on the world of Marik in the former
-Free Worlds League Lee and his forces began the long trek towards Marik. It is unknown what is
driving Lee to find the Spirit Cats however there appears to be a drive in the young Nova Cat
warrior. He has been known to pilot the Dragon Cat X-Ray Configuration in more than one occasion
using some of the most advanced Clan grade weapons.
