Overview
The original Davion Block I-class Destroyer was the bastard child of
First Prince Ellen Davion, following the Davion Civil War First Prince
Alexander Davion noticed the need for a new destroyer for his army which lead
to the Davion Block II. The Block II improved over the Davion Block I in
every way quickly taking the original vessel's place. Much of the original Block I’s
were bought by the Star League Defence Force which created the Whirlwind
class Destroyer, now seen in operation by the Clans.
All the remaining Block II’s left under House Davion control were
destroyed in the Succession Wars however secretly Hose Davion had held onto
three Block I vessels, all too badly damaged to be sold to the SLDF. These
vessels were stripped of their armaments and moved to a secret anchorage
known as Hadrian’s Command. There they remained until reactivation during
the Inner Sphere’s assaults against Clan Smoke Jaguar due to worries about
security of the Federated Suns.
Capabilities
Based on the hulls of the original Block I the Block III Davion
weighs as much as the Block I bring it in at just over half a million tons.
The vessel’s engines and main power plant were kept the same so the Davion
has a two gravities safe acceleration thrust it can maintain and a three
gravity maximum acceleration thrust for use in emergencies and combat. For
added flexibility a Lithium Fusion Battery was added allowing the WarShip to
double jump through systems. The WarShip’s armour was upgraded to Lamellor
Ferro-Carbide so the vessel has a hide almost twice as strong as the original
Block I and almost rivalling the Block II for less tonnage.
The Block I had no internal fighter support, however the Block III
upgrade has an entire wing of fighters plus two additional small craft, all
of the bays are capable of holding a small craft or fighter. The original
Block I also lacked any DropShip collars however the Block III has been given
two DropShip collars just like the Block II vessel. For internal defensive
duties the Davion Block III carries a single platoon of Battle Armoured
Marine troopers, although this is far less than many modern WarShips it does
give the vessel’s crew some peace of mind in close quarters battles with
enemy vessels and gives the Destroyer another weapon if it needs it.
Offensively the Davion Block III Destroyer’s weapons have been
influenced by three vessels, the Davion Block I, the Davion Block II and some
sketchy information on the Whirlwind-Destroyer fielded by the Clans. The
fore weapons on the Davion Block III are four NAC/25s exactly the same
weapons on the original Davion and the Whirlwind. In both the forward
quarters are one Light Naval Gauss Rifles and two Naval-Lasers class-45 this
is a combination of the original Davion‘s weapons and the Whirlwind. In each
broadside arc are four NAC/35s that can give any class of enemy WarShip a bad
day, this was a configuration on neither class however the Davion Block II
did have a pair of NAC/30s which could have been the inspiration for this
configuration. In each of the rear aft quarters are two Naval-Lasers
class-35s which is a direct downgrade of the originals Naval-Lasers
class-45s. Directly aft this vessel mounts four NAC/25 cannons just like the
both Davion Block I and Block II models and the Whirlwind upgrade.
For fighter defence the Davion Block III has a net of fourteen
brand-new class-5 Rotary Autocannons, six Large Lasers and four Large Pulse
Lasers. For point defence there are forty anti-missile systems, although their ammo is
limited, and six Streak six-tube Short Range Missile Launchers. Finally four of the new
Screen Launchers were added one fore, one each broadside and one directly aft. Deployed
correctly these screens obscure a WarShip from weapons fire.
The deployment of the RACs and the Screen Launchers on this frame
were used as prototypes for the deployment of these weapons on the Avalon
class Cruiser. Finally the Davion Block III has just under thirty-one thousand tons
cargo capacity compared to a seventy thousand-and-a-half ton cargo capacity
and just over seventy-two thousand ton capacity on the Davion Block I and the
Davion Block II models. Although the cargo capacity has been drastically reduced
it is still greater than many other modern WarShips.
Deployment
Initially there were three Davion Block I vessels were taken from
Mothball and all upgraded to the Block III specifications. House Davion has
begun to build three more such vessels at the expense of future Fox and
Hound-class Corvettes and Avalon-class Cruisers. If the current Davions
and the new Davions are a success then House Davion plan the Davion to be
the most popular vessel in their navy. So far no Davions have seen combat,
although there is a persistent rumour that they almost engaged Clan Nova Cat’s
fleet these rumours have never been confirmed nor has the location of the close
call.
In 3068 the FSS Alexander Davion, the first Davion Block III, finally had
its baptism of fire when it engaged an enemy in combat in the Chaos March.
In an assassination attempt against First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion the
FSS Alexander Davion destroyed two Zechetinu-class Corvettes formerly of the
Free Worlds League and assisted the Wolf’s Dragoon WarShips Nelson and Darius
in destroying two Essex Mk-1-class Destroyers and a single Naga II-class
Destroyer. Although the Alexander Davion was badly damaged, and would
require over a years refit, it lost both its DropShips and most of the
fighter screen, the destroyer came thought the battle intact proving the
worthiness of the design.
