Overview
This OmniMech is the first design to be developed by the Stone Rhino Clan, it is also histories first Omni-QuadMech. The Stone Rhino is built to resemble a Stone Rhino making it tall and long instead of wide like most Quads. An initial prototype based on a sixty-five ton frame was considered however it failed to live up to expectations and was discontinued.
Capabilities
The Stone Rhino’s biggest asset is its speed for a heavy Mech it is exceptionally swift, able to reach a top safe running speed of in excess of ninety kilometres per hour. This type of performance is only gained through the use of a massive 360 extra-light fusion engine, this engine is bulky and it takes up almost a third of the Mech’s total weight. To lighten the Stone Rhino’s load and make space for more weapons both Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous Armour were used, unfortunately although this allows the Mech to used almost a third of its weight on weapons and equipment it severely limit’s where weapons and equipment may be stored.
The Primary Configuration most commonly seen features a pair of Extended-Range Large Lasers one on a long mount on the head and another on the torso, these mounts almost look like horns on a Rhino however they are not usable as ramming weapons. Backing up these are a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers, a flamer and a Streak Short Range Missile Rack. Finally a third Medium Pulse Laser covers the rear.
The second most common configuration, the “Alpha†features an ER Large Laser in the same place as the Prime however a bulkier ER PPC is in the centre torso. The longer than normal mounts similar to the primes are in evidence here also living up to the Rhino name. Two ER Medium Lasers and a five-tube Long Range Missile Rack round out the forward firing weapons while a targeting computer supports these, finally a flamer covers the rear.
The Bravo, or “Betaâ€, configuration features a flamer in the head, a medium pulse laser and two five-tube Long Range missile launchers. The Beta’s surprise package to a fight is the massive 20-rated Ultra Autocannon that takes up the majority of the torso. Fed with plenty ammo this weapon is deadly to any type of Mech.
The Constellation, or Charlie, configuration is the jumper of the pack with six Jump Jets allowing it to leap 180 metres in a single bound. The ER Large Laser and ER PPC seen on the Alpha feature in the same positions on this configuration while a bevy of Small Pulse Lasers, covering front and back, and a flamer round out the weapons.
The Delta configuration is quite uncommon mainly due to the availability of the Mech’s main gun a so-called ProtoMech AC/8, almost as effective as an AC/10 and with half again as much ammo, this new weapons looks like it will be effective however currently only elite units have received it. An ER Large Laser, a Large Pulse Laser and a Medium Pulse Laser all back up this weapon while an ECM Suite helps hide the Stone Rhino and its Star Mates from enemy sensors.
The final Epsilon, or Echo, configuration features a forward mounted vertical launch Advanced Tactical Missile Launcher on one side of the torso. While the “rhino horn†ER Large Lasers seen on other configurations feature on this Mech also. A Medium Pulse Laser and a Flamer cover the rear.
Deployment
The iInitial produced sixty-five ton design was deployed with elite units and only a couple of these Mechs have survived. All clusters of the Stone Rhino Clan have received several of these Mechs to foster unity within the new Clan. The SLDF army was able to salvage one before the Stone Rhinos withdrawal from Huntress. All the other Clans have shown an interest in the design not because of its combat potential but because it is the first successful Quad-Omni design. Clan Nova Cat is the only Clan to be able to secure a Stone Rhino, they did so by trading away their near-abandoned firebase on Dagda, as that Clan slowly abandons Clan Space entirely. Clan Nova Cat have begun producing a limited quantity of these Mechs in their newly formed Nova Cat’s Den in the former Tortuga Dominions in the Periphery near the Federated Suns.
Also following the SLDF encounter with this Mech the original Clan Mech the Inner Sphere designated Stone Rhino was renamed Behemoth matching its Clan name.
