Camelot-class Mobile Command/Support DropShip
« on: July 18, 2012, 06:41:53 PM »

I created this for they AU but it could potentially provide the new LCTs of the AFFS in canon with an artillery platform.  It also shows off the new cruise missile artillery.

Overview
Though the development of the Conquistador-class Command/Troop DropShip gave the Federated Suns a good base as central command for the ground troops there was still a gap in a support roll for grounded troops.  Galax Shipyards raised to the challenge as the Federated Boeing engineers produced a new vessel for the AFFS and the Camelot-class DropShip was born.  Unlike the Conquistador-class the Camelot is a spheroid design and fully capable of supporting most ground troops in offence or defence.

Capabilities
The Camelot has a relatively standard movement profile or 1.5G standard acceleration and 2.5G maximum, forty seven tons of improved Ferro aluminium armour gives the ship a decent overall protection though the nose is quite a bit lighter than the aft.  This isn’t where the ship excels however, the four cargo bays make the Camelot an invaluable asset.
The top bay, and pretty much the entire forward section of the ship, is made up of four massive Cruise Missile Artillery/120 Launchers with forty missiles in a magazine beside it.  Although incapable of being used in space, under normal circumstances, the missile launchers can provide long range support for any ground force literally leveling enemy troops and bases with massive amounts of high explosives.
The second cargo bay houses a MASH unit with ten emergency theatres, communication, command and control equipment that allow the DropShip to monitor and coordinate a large ground force and a field kitchen that feeds the crew and passengers of the DropShip.
Directly below this arrangement is the units external forces bay, first up is a bay that can either hold four BattleMechs, often engineering or command Mechs, or six heavy vehicles, like the Mechs either support or command vehicles.
With these units are twelve Battle Armour troopers each suit capable of being used for engineering purposes and finally barracks for four platoons of Combat Engineers for creating a fully extensive firebase around the massive DropShip.  All these ground troops are provided for with one hundred and seventy-nine steerage quarters.  Finally a standard cargo bay capable of carrying upwards of eight hundred-and-ninety-six tons of standard cargo, standard operating procedure would have this DropShip move with a major unit which would include cargo vessels so this is not seen as too much of a disadvantage.
The Camelot is armed like any good support ship, lightly and mostly to the rear for use when the craft is grounded.  In the nose four Cruise Missile/120 launchers make it near impossible for any further armament to be mounted there instead only three Laser Anti-Missile Systems are housed in the nose, they are mainly used to protect the cargo bay doors that cover the Cruise Missile Launchers.
In the forward sides there are two Rotary class-2 Autocannons, two of the largest still experimental Thunderbolt Long Range Missile Launchers and two Heavy PPCs these are mainly for close in defence in space, though the vessel should really never be left alone in space.  In the Rear sides are two heavier Rotary class-5 autocannons, four ancient standard medium class lasers taken from Federated Suns scrap yards from decommissioned BattleMechs and Vehicles, lastly four brand-new Snub-nosed PPCs perfect for close in defence against ground forces.
Finally in the vessel’s rear there are two further Heavy PPCs, four more medium lasers and four streak six-pack short range missile launcher for close in defence.

Battle History
The vessels debut came two years before in 3074 when the AFFS were testing the DropShip’s performance with a full load in the periphery.  A pirate force attempted to capture the under defended DropShip causing heavy damage to the engines disabling the craft, unfortunately the pirate craft also received heavy damage and found that they would have to burn their engines for two days before in range to board and take control of the prototype Camelot.
The crew of the Camelot had other ideas however they entered cargo bay one and powered all four of the ship’s Cruise Missile Launchers, using battle armoured troops to burn through the outer doors they took the opportunity to fire all four missiles in one volley.  Without guidance and given the long distance only one of the Missiles struck the side of the pirate however it was enough to convince the pirates the Camelot was armed with capital missiles and not to be trifled with, fleeing leaving the Camelot was recovered by AFFS who found the Cruise Missile Launchers frozen by the extreme cold in space unable to fire again.

Deployment
The Federated Suns have been churning out the Camelot in limited numbers since it was first built 3076 the first regiments to receive the DropShips have been the independent regiments such as the First Kathil Uhlans RCT and the First Federated Suns Armoured Calvary RCT.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.
