Overview
The Craven OmniMech had a more auspicious start than its name implies. Originally to be called the Blood Raven in homage its predecessor’s creator, it was intended to become the Raven Alliance’s premier medium omnimech. Renamed the Craven in the post-Combine war it now serves as a reminder not to take success for granted.
Capablities
Built to a similar profile to its predecessor, the Crimson Langur, the squat and bulky profile belies the speed the Craven can attain. Built around a 300 XL engine with a supercharger, the Craven can boast speeds of up to 128 kph, matching the speeds of ‘mechs 10 tons lighter. Meanwhile the ferro-lamellor armor is layered on in such densities that the Craven can boast a level of protection equaling many ‘mechs 10 or 15 tons heavier.
The primary weapons configuration of the Craven seems to be purpose-built for the newly reintroduced Stoop clusters to the Raven touman. Being known for direct orbital entry, this version boasts a variety of energy weapons as well as a pair of AP gauss rifles for anti-infantry work. A watchdog CEWS and six jump jets round out its equipment allowing it to function in scouting and EWAR roles as well.
More in line with typical clan dueling methods, the alfa and bravo versions boast a variety of weapons allowing for strong levels of fire at many ranges. The alfa adds additional mobility in the form of jump jets and has a tendency to run hot, while the bravo can regularly fire its entire suite of weapons without noticeable heat accumulation.
The charlie and delta configurations take their weapons suites from older designs with some slight changes. The charlie, at first glance, appears nearly identical to the primary configuration of the Crimson Langur, but holds a nasty surprise in the form of a third heavy medium laser and the inclusion of the ECM capabilities of the Watchdog CEWS. On the other hand, the delta hearkens back to the Nova, with a bevy of heavy lasers on each arm. A pair of mid-sized LRM racks give it a bit of longer range capability.
The last configuration appears to be biased towards an anti-infantry role, with pulse lasers, LRMs and AP gauss rifles, though seems to function nearly as well in an indirect fire support role.
Deployment
Thus far only seen in the Raven touman it has seen limited action against the Draconis Combine. In a trial proscribing heavily to the rules of zelbrigen over control of the Morthac system a star of these were deployed mostly in the primary and Charlie versions. The Combine troops were surprised to find such mobility and endurance on a ‘mech this size and though the battle was hard fought, the trial turned to the Raven’s favor.
Variants
There are mere rumors of a non-omni version of this ‘mech going by the its original designation of Blood Raven, which appears identical to the primary variant of the Craven but reports also seem to include a stealth system on par with the ancient Hegemony’s Null Signature System. Reports indicated that the Blood Raven is only being deployed by the Raven Clan Watch at this time.
