Name this Fortification!
« on: May 30, 2010, 11:53:06 AM »

Hey folks I'm looking for a name of the MegaCastle built on Quentin as the TRAS HQ for the Draconis Front. Of course you guys know the other MegaCastle built on Hall as the TRAS HQ for the Marik Front is called Schrack as it is about anti-Marik as you can get. I was thinking something similar for the Kuritas but haven't been able to come up with anything. So what do you think?

Hmmm...What do you think of Yellow Bird? I can hardly think of anything else more anti-Kurita.

Nice but not military enough.

What about Siegfried? or St Georges? or any other dragon slayer?

I thought of Yellow Bird and it sounds good for an Operation but not a fort. Von Rohr just isn't right but would piss them off. I was going to go with Ascalon for St. George's sword but I have used that enough see Davion battleship among other things.

So Siegfried is my front runner right now. Any other mythical dragonslayers or their weapons we could use? How about American ships or bases of the Second World War that defeated the Japanese Empire? A significant loss would be good. Tempted to go with Wake Island but that doesn't sound right either.

Keep those suggestions coming!

Hmm, how about Sigmund instead of Siegfried. I like it for a more Rasalhague or Norse sounding name. Or Lydda the place were St. George defeated the dragon.

I'm not sure using WW2 names is the right way to go- there are some ship names that do sound good - Fort Ticonderoga (yes I know there is a real world fort Ticonderoga- there was also a WW2 carrier by that name).  None of the battle names are really that good- Midway is already a planet in the DC.  Guadalcanal, just doesn't work for me (although there is something to be said for using Fort Henderson after Henderson Field on the Canal).  You could use WW2 naval commanders - Nimitiz, Halsey and Spruance come to mind but would that really bother the DC?

A real poke in the eye would be Ozawa- since the Kuritans have had a running competition with them since WW2, but then again their is a world named Ozawa.

One possiblity is Watchtower- this was the code name for the Guadalcanal operation.  Coronet was the code name for the plan to invade Honshu/Tokyo.  Olympic was the code name for the invasion of Kyushu.

I really like watchtowe but I don't know that it would scare the DC.

How about Chindit after the British Army jungle fighters from the Burma campaign?

Some more good suggestions guys. Six I do not think Chindit would work even though it is appropriate.

Irose I love Ticonderoga on many levels but it still comes in behind Sigmund/Siegfried for me anyway.

For WW2 battle names I would agree that there isn't many great sounding choices even Henderson fails to impress me.

Hmm - Watchtower, Coronet, and Olympic sound good on the surface but would they sound good with MegaCastle ________ .

Now American commanders of the 2nd WW are an interesting thought. Nimitiz, Halsey and Spruance are good but what about McArthur? That might be the best option IMO.

What about famous Terran commanders who might have defeated the Combine during the Age of War? Coblitz and Farragut come to mind from fluff we have from TPTB. Are there others??

I have plans for Ozawa, lets leave it at that, and say no on this question.

Truth be told, as Terran/American centric as the Hegemony/Republic is, I actually like Fort Henderson or Fort Coblitz.

Otherwise it's too "other Great House" for my taste.

For Watchtower, I figured it would just be referred to as The Watchtower.

MacArthur was an ass... If you want a ground pounder I would go with Edson, Vandergrift or Basilone

Coblitz would work, not so sure about Farragut.

Leyte base - Since a Kurita made an ass of himself there.
Fort Sprague - The USN Admiral at Leyte bay.
Canary roost - Yellow bird theme.
Dog House - Same as above since the Canary got it's name from Canis - dog.
Corregidor - Fortress in WWII.
Khalkhin Gol (sounds fortressy) - After the incident with the Soviets in Manchuria. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles_of_Khalkhin_Gol
Gurthang - Since the snakes like Silmarillion why not the sword that slew Glaurung Morgoth's great dragon.
Fort Moresby - After Port Moresby, which the IJN and IJA failed to take despite numerous attempts.

More great suggestions and I'll toss in two more thinking Knightmarishly. How about Mckenna or Cameron after the first two Houses of Terra? Mckenna after the founder of the Hegemony would be good.

The Watchtower is a good name for an installation of some type Irose. I'm thinking a listening post or forward base perhaps even a space base of some type.

McArthur was an egomaniac no doubt but he was a powerful symbol of US victory over Japan. He was Chief Administrator following the war, concluded the peace on board the Missouri (another good name), and the Phillipines Campaigns of course.

The only problem with Coblitz is I'm just not that sure about his canon role. We've given him a little love here at BTSD but I'm just not that sure of his history. If he fought and defeated the Combine that is great but he could have been somewhere else.

Lot of good suggestions CJvR. Corregidor is a good name certainly but the US did lose initially.

Either of those would work.  But again both are names of warships....

He should have been relieved of command following the fall of the Philippines for way the campaign was mishandled.   And it can be argued that one of the major reason the US invaded the Philippines and liberated it from the Japanese was because of MacArthur's egomania and need to fulfill his "I shall return" promise.

No one really pays attention to the fact that the US eventually recaptured the Island- I can't see using it as a name for a new fortress.

Okay so my favorites so far are Sigmund, Ticonderoga, MacArthur, and Coblitz. I'm still open to new suggestions or we can start voting for a favorite.
