In 3057, Clans Jade Falcon and Wolf underwent what became known as the Refusal War. This conflict escalated to a de facto Trial of Absorption that resulted in the death of former ilKhan Ulric Kerensky and Khan Natasha Kerensky, as well as the formation of the Clan Wolf-in-Exile under the command of saKhan Phelan Ward. Primarily fought in the Inner Sphere, there were also conflicts between Wolf and Falcon forces left behind in the Clan Homeworlds.
On Roche, the Falcons made an attempt to seize the Wolf enclave. Ferocious resistance by the defenders, however, forced the Falcon commander to cut through territory belonging to Clan Goliath Scorpion in an attempt to dislodge the defending Wolves from their position. While the Scorpions remained neutral in the conflict, such an uninvited incursion into their enclave simply had to be answered.
Although only a minor skirmish in the grand scheme of the Refusal War, the Falcon forces were stopped in their advance and forced to leave Scorpion soil. Had Elias Critchell remained alive in the wake of the conflict, it is likely that he would have taken action against the Scorpion temerity . . . but newly elevated Khan Martha Pryde was of a different disposition. Desiring no additional conflict until the Falcons rebuilt their forces, she offered an apology to the Scorpions for the "overreach" of the local Falcon commander in violating their borders and the matter was settled.
The Scorpions claimed isorla from the skirmish, including a few salvaged OmniMechs and one Warrior taken as abtakha. Warrior Mordecai (of Blood House Binetti) had been forced to eject from his 'Mech and, badly wounded, he was claimed by the Scorpions as a prize from the battle.
The former Falcon quickly recovered and regained his status as an abtakha Warrior within the Scorpion Touman. There, he rapidly rose in rank and influence, attaining the rank of Star Captain by 3060. In that year, a Blood Name became open in the Jade Falcons--of Blood House Binetti. Star Captain Mordecai petitioned to the Khan to return to Ironhold to take part in the Trial of Bloodright. That request was granted.
The Falcons, however, were not pleased when he arrived in Scorpion uniform and announced his intention to enter the Trials. Many believed that Mordecai would die on Ironhold.
They were wrong.
Combining all that he had learned from Falcon sibkos and instructors as well as the teachings of the Scorpion, Mordecai won his Bloodname on Ironhold and returned to Roche.
In recognition of his feat, Khan Ariel Suvorov awarded Mordecai Binetti the rank of Star Colonel and offered him the opportunity to raise a new Cluster to add to the Scorpion Touman.
Decanted a Falcon, trained as a Falcon, raised and bred and blooded as a Falcon, Mordecai Binetti did so. But he did so in a way that increased the flexibility of his Clan. Star Colonel Binetti presented the Khan, saKhan, and Master of Instruction with a proposal to raise a Cluster in the Falcon fashion . . . one equipped entirely with jump jets for maximum flexibility and tactical maneuvering on the battle field.
Always a staunchly traditional Clan, the Scorpions frowned upon the use of jump jets save when absolutely necessary. None of their new OmniMechs (the so-called Scorpion series) mounted jets as fixed equipment. Khan Suvorov questioned whether the Clan could devote resources to such designs, but Star Colonel Binetti had already laid out plans.
A stockpile of older BattleMechs lay unused in Scorpion caches; BattleMechs that Clan Jade Falcon desperately needed as it sought to rebuild their forces and secure their Inner Sphere holdings. Trading such equipment--no longer required by the Scorpion Touman--for the right to produce and/or acquire two jump capable designs (the 50-ton Black Harrier and the 70-ton Jade Falcon (also known as the Summoner II)) could be easily done. The third design was already in use by Clan Diamond Shark, and furthermore it was one based on the Scorpion designed Sand Devil. In the 3040s, The Sharks sought to field a new jump capable OmniMech and came to an agreement with the Scorpions to use the Sand Devil as the basis. This 50-ton design became known as the Sable Raptor (designated as the Grendel by Inner Sphere forces) and would provide a capable scout element to the new Cluster.
While Suvorov was still leery, saKhan Nelson Elam and Master of Instruction Nikolai Djerassi managed to convince her to form the unit. Despite tradition and despite the general distaste for jump jet equipped units in the Scorpion Touman, there had always been Warriors who outfitted their OmniMechs to include such. And the two leaders of the Scorpions acknowledged that such a unit, trained and skilled in the use of jump jets as fixed equipment, could prove a valuable asset.
Grudgingly, the Khan agreed. OmniMechs were acquired and calls issued throughout the Scorpion Touman for volunteers.
And so was born the 30th Scorpion Lancer Cluster.
Star Colonel Mordecai Binetti named the unit Invictus in Honor of the Scorpion Way and the Warriors of the Clans of Kerensky that would forever remain Unconquered. Bloodied, yes. Tasting the ash of defeat, yes. But never broken. Never to be conquered. Never to surrender.
Such an illustrious name attracted some of the best of the Clan . . . and they trained well and hard in how best to use jump jets to their advantage in all tactical situations. By the time of the Scorpion Exodus, the 30th Lancers was one of the most tactically flexible units within the Scorpion Touman, able to fight and win in all terrains, all weather conditions, and against the odds more often than not.
Truly the Warriors of the 30th Lancers had become Invictus. And through them the entire Scorpion Touman was inspired to follow.

Sable Raptor
The Sable Raptor to is a 50-ton OmniMech designed and fielded by Clan Diamond in 3047. Based upon the Sand Devil OmniMech of Clan Goliath Scorpion, the Sable Raptor features fixed jump jets. While the Sharks were initially looking at a entirely new design built on a 45-ton chassis, several Shark Scientists proposed instead adapting the Sand Devil for the new Shark OmniMech. The two designs shared the same available pod-space, but by using the Sand Devil as a basis for starting the design, years could be shaved from the process. Furthermore, the design would feature heavier and more robust armor protection and internal structure. The Shark Khans agreed and reached an agreement with Clan Goliath Scorpion to acquire the design as the basis for their new Sable Raptor.
(NOTE: This design replaces the Mongrel OmniMech in my alternate universe--MA)
50 tons in overall mass, the Sable Raptor moves at a walking speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour, with a running speed of 118.8 kph. Seven jump jets allow for a maximum jump distance of 210 meters. Pod-space is an ample 13.5 tons with 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating providing for near maximum protection on a 50-ton frame. The configurations listed below are those used by Clan Goliath Scorpion; the Sharks have other configurations that they (and most other Clans) use.

The Prime-1 and Prime-2 feature the same weaponry and heat sinks. Each carries an Extended Range PPC in the right arm, backed up an ER Medium Laser in the left arm and an ER Small Laser in the center torso. All weapons are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. Thirteen double-strength Heat Sinks provide ample (if not full) cooling ability. The Prime-1 carries a head-mounted Active Probe, while the Prime-2 instead features an ECM Suite.

Configuration B is a dedicated close-range in-fighter with a sting at long range. The main gun is an ER Large Laser in the right arm, supported by seven ER Small Lasers in close (2 left arm, 1 right arm, 1 each right torso, center torso, left torso, and head). All weapons are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso, while 14 double-strength Heat Sinks are installed. Not quite enough to remain heat neutral on a jumping Alpha Strike, this is sufficient to allow a running Alpha Strike without generating any excess overheat.

Configuration G is based on the B Configuration, but forgoes any attempt at long-range engagement. Weaponry consists of two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm) and seven ER Small Lasers (three each right torso and left torso, one center torso), all tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. A head-mounted ECM Suite protects the OmniMech and its star-mates, while fifteen DHS eliminates nearly all excess overheat production, even on a jumping Alpha Strike.

Finally, the Sable Raptor H is designed for anti-personnel and urban operations. The design features a head-mounted Active Probe, an ECM Suite in the center torso, and a left torso mounted Anti-Missile System with a ton of ammunition (24 bursts). Weaponry consists of two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm), four Anti-Personnel Gauss Rifles (two each right torso and left torso) fed by two tons of ammunition, and two Flamers (right arm and left arm). The APGs and ERMLs are tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. A dozen DHS provides ample cooling, although a full jumping Alpha Strike with all weapons will generate some excess overheat.

Black Harrier
A Clan Jade Falcon design, the 50-ton Black Harrier is seen in limited numbers in the Clan Goliath Scorpion Touman. The configurations differ from those commonly seen in the Jade Falcon Occupation Zone, primarily due to the Scorpion insistence of a Targeting Computer in every configuration and dislike of missile weaponry.
Using a 300XL extra-light fusion engine, the Black Harrier is able to walk at speeds of 64.8 kilometers per hour and run at 97.2 kph, while six fixed jump jets allow for a maximum jump distance of 180 meters. 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating provide near maximum available for the chassis and ten double strength heat sinks are fitted as standard. This leaves 20.5 tons of available pod-space for weaponry and equipment.

Jade Falcon
Another design fielded by Clan Jade Falcon, the Jade Falcon OmniMech (also known as the Summoner II) is a heavy-weight unit greatly prized among the Clans of Kerensky. 70-tons in overall mass, the Jade Falcon is nonetheless able to walk at speeds of 54.0 kilometers per hour, run at 86.4 kph, and has been fitted with five fixed jump jets that allow for a maximum jump distance of 150 meters.
Fourteen double-strength heat sinks have been banked within the engine core, leaving ample space in the chassis for the 24.5 tons of available pod-space for weapons and equipment. With eleven full tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating, this OmniMech is also quite robust on the battlefield.
This combination of armor, speed, mobility, cooling, and weaponry is viewed within Clan Jade Falcon (and other Clans of Kerensky) as a nearly perfect example of what a Clan OmniMech should be.
The configurations shown below are those used by Clan Goliath Scorpion and are not in common use among the other Clans (although exceptions exist).

Configuration B also features two sub-configurations. Each is armed with an ER PPC (right arm) and three ER Small Lasers (center torso, right torso, and left torso), as well as a head-mounted ECM Suite. The B-1 Configuration includes an LB-10X Autocannon in the left arm with two tons of ammunition. Configuration B-2 replaces that weapon with an Ultra AC-10 Autocannon, also with two tons of ammunition. All weapons systems are tied into a four-ton Targeting Computer placed in the right torso. Only the fourteen base DHS are included, but on the Jade Falcon B-1 this results in a unit that is heat neutral on a jumping Alpha Strike. The B-2 Configuration does run slightly hotter, especially when the Ultra AC-10 is set to dual fire mode.

How Goliath Scorpion of you. I really like this one MA for a few reasons. One, the Refusal War and the Homeworlds is an under or never mentioned subject that I myself have done some writing on. Wolf in particular most have had more units there which never get any attention and your Jade Falcon attack across Goliath Scorpion territory is a nice angle too. There are historical paralells there as well as Falcon hubris and Invaders just not caring about Homeworld implications which all fit well. Taking abtakha and creating a unit then from this incident is of course how we all know of the Scorpions in the first place given their initial mention in the Wolf Clan Sourcebook. So doing the reverse for the Falcons is a nice touch.
Playing up that angle may I suggest that the Cluster is a dumping ground for Crusaders in the Clan? It would make sense given the Scorpions did indeed have some but were largely Warden (I believe their saKhan is mentioned to be a former Crusader in FM Warden Clans). Also adding a mention of Nathaculor ["the strike of the unswervable sword" Their battle philosophy of dueling, even in large engagements, dictates a series of devastating direct attacks. In keeping with Nicholas Kerensky's goal of minimal loss of life and property in combat, the Clans' initial objective in each attack was to identify and cripple or destroy the defender's command, communication, and control positions. Failing that, they simply took on the largest concentration of enemy forces, using the rationale that, "if we can't cut off the enemy's head, we cut off his arms instead] to their Falcon learned and practiced tactics would be a good addition. From that two things can also be mentioned, warriors drawn to this unit are accomplished duelists (a Goliath Scorpion trait already) and skilled with a blade (see their knife dancing and Jade Falcon history which combine nicely). Don't be afraid to also say these guys are a tad bit arrogant. ;)
I did have one other thought which currently escapes me but this is well done. If I think of it later I will post again. Looking forward to the Jade Falcon as well!

I had the same thought as to making this a Crusader-leaning Cluster (hence the "Reliable" rating on loyalty, rather than "Fanatical"). And with a former Falcon leading them, you can bet they will be more than wee bit arrogant! Probably big on physical discipline as well . . . more so anyway than other Scorpion Clusters.
I wanted to have the Scorpions possess a unit that relied on jump jets and this was what I came up with. One that specializes in fights on difficult terrain or in constricted quarters--such as urban areas. Places where jump jets are vital to seizing the advantage and pressing it home.
Sure, you can always mount JJs on OmniMechs . . . if your quartermaster has enough jump jets, that is! After all, if you only have them from time-to-time and seldom use them, how can you learn enough to use them effectively?
Or so I've always asked myself.
Anyway, thanks for you thoughts on the matter. Love to see anyone else's ideas as well.

Why not go further and settle the use of Jump Jets with a duel where Binetti is broken but manages to come back once more and win (doing that two times in a row really make someone deserve the Invictus title)?
